The defences had been set.

After hearing of the destruction caused by the monster that had emerged from the ocean just a couple of weeks prior, the Argentinian government had dispatched a small group of infantrymen, mostly young soldiers, the only free soldiers left with all the veterans dealing with rodan in the north east. On top of this were some tanks, only sent to satisfy Monarch who were calling for greater action to be taken.

The public had begun to refer to this beast and the Smog MOnster because it left the small fishing village that it first arose near engulfed in a thick acrid smog.

In truth, this so-called "smog monster" seemed like a small issue. It was less than half the size of even the smaller Titans and the exhausted nation was hoping that this malformed trilobite was just the small issue it seemed to be.

The young soldiers watched as the dark form of the smog monster dragged itself towards their defence lines. A chalk marker had been drawn in the grass not far in front of the monster as an indicator of when the giant abomination would be in range.

"Are we meant to be scared of that thing," one soldier whispered to his friend, "it looks like a wad of phlegm."

The commander of the group (I don't know military ranks well so just roll with it) held his arm up, his hand clenched in a fist and a pair of binoculars held firmly against his head. He watched sternly as the creature dragged itself over the white like with its tent peg like forelimbs.

"FIRE!" he yelled, pointing at the creature.

All at once, the tanks shot their explosive rounds and the infantrymen opened fire with their mounted guns. The air filled with a constant deafening crackle of bullet fire. The beast was instantly enveloped in a cloud of smoke from the explosive rounds.

The creature bellowed a deep grating roar and began to drag itself at a faster rate. Once the smoke cleared, the creature was visibly injured. Chunks of its flesh had been blasted away, exposing pulsating organs and oozing a deep blue blood.

"FIRE AT WILL!"

Once the guns started blasting again, The Smog Monster was only 50 metres or so away from the defensive line but slowing down, the injuries taking their toll.

Suddenly, the creature roared again and a plume of smoke expanded from hte it. The thick peasoup-fog like cloud expanded and was wafted towards the defensive line.

The smoke washed over the military like a veil of death. As soon as the cloud reached them every soldier collapsed onto the floor retching and coughing. Their eyes watered and noses ran as the acrid air burnt every inch of them. Their skin began to itch and burn, along with blood being coughed up constantly from their mutilated lungs.

The Smog Monster growled and began to drag itself towards the defences, lusting for revenge. Once it reached the fortified ridge it immediately clambered on top of one of the tanks and smashed its forelimb into the roof.

KLUNK

The hardened point clanged against the metal, creating a sizable dent in the top of the creature bashed the top of the tank again, creating a tiny puncture too small to fit the tip of it's appendage in.

The monster ferociously clawed at the hole, tearing it open bigger and bigger until it was big enough for the creature to reach its arm into the shell of the vehicle and mangle the insides, tearing up seats, electronics and drivers.

The creature then flipped the tank over and moved on to destroy the rest of the platoon, still trailing a thick blue blood.

After the massacre was through and corpses lay strewn and corroding in the cold soil the creature turned to the building behind the defensive lines.

A huge concrete building stood, billowing smoke through huge smokestacks and positioned on top of a hill that was poetically barren of life. It was a power plant, a coal one, and not adherent to Environmental codes.

The monster limped its way towards the monochrome building, its heart visibly pulsing through an open wound. It lugged itself up the hill and clambered up onto the roof of the building.

The Smog Monster then reached out with its muscular forelimbs and, with one firm swipe brought a smokestack crumbling down. Thick sooty fog emanated from the stump of the concrete pillar. The tired creature scrambled over the disintegrating roof and positioned itself over the column of smoke and once began to feed, sucking in the toxic and acrid smoke right from the source.
