The Lima Bean had changed slightly over the years. The walls were painted a fresh shade of blue, and the chairs were new, but the comforting smell of coffee and the familiar buzz of conversation remained the same. Finn and Kurt sat in a corner booth, steaming cups of their favorite brews between them.
Finn stirred his coffee absentmindedly, his mind still on the last few days. Rachel's revelations, Serena's boundless energy, and the sheer weight of the years they'd missed—everything was swirling in his head like a storm he couldn't quite calm.
"So," Kurt began, his perfectly arched brow lifting as he leaned back in his seat. "You and Rachel. That's why you're so... distracted."
Finn blinked, startled out of his thoughts. "What do you mean?"
Kurt gave him a knowing look. "Please. You've been staring into your coffee like it's a crystal ball. Let me guess: she's turned your world upside down. Again."
Finn chuckled sheepishly. "You're not wrong. It's just… a lot, you know? I came back to Lima thinking everything would be simple, and now…" He trailed off, shaking his head.
"Now, Rachel has a daughter," Kurt finished for him, his voice softening. "I know. She told me years ago. Serena's adorable, by the way."
Finn looked at him, surprised. "You've met her?"
"Of course. I'm Uncle Kurt," he said with a proud smile. "Rachel and I may have had our ups and downs, but we've stayed close. She's done an incredible job raising that little girl."
Finn nodded, his chest tightening slightly. "She really has. I mean, seeing her with Serena… it's like she's a whole new person."
Kurt sipped his coffee, studying Finn over the rim of his cup. "She's still Rachel, though. Determined, passionate, occasionally infuriating. And she still has that way of pulling people into her orbit—like a tiny brunette planet."
Finn laughed despite himself. "Yeah, that sounds about right."
Kurt set his cup down, tilting his head thoughtfully. "But you're not just thinking about Serena, are you? You're thinking about Rachel. About what you had."
Finn hesitated, then nodded. "I guess I am. Being around her again… it brings back a lot of memories. Good ones, mostly. But also the way it ended."
Kurt's expression softened. "You mean when she broke up with you before New York?"
Finn winced, the memory hitting him like a sudden gust of wind. "Yeah. That."
"You two were so young," Kurt said gently. "And Rachel… well, she was always chasing something bigger. She thought she was doing the right thing, letting you go so she could pursue her dreams."
"I know," Finn said, his voice low. "And part of me understood, even back then. She had so much ahead of her, and I didn't want to hold her back. But it still hurt, you know? It felt like… like I wasn't enough."
Kurt reached across the table, placing a hand on Finn's. "You were always enough, Finn. Rachel just didn't know how to balance her dreams with her heart back then. It doesn't mean she didn't love you."
Finn sighed, leaning back in his seat. "Do you think she still feels anything? I mean, after all this time?"
Kurt's eyes twinkled with a hint of mischief. "Oh, she feels something. Trust me, I know Rachel better than most. She wouldn't have let you meet Serena if she didn't trust you. And she wouldn't be spending time with you now if you didn't still mean something to her."
Finn looked down at his coffee, his thoughts swirling again. "I don't know if I'm ready for this, Kurt. It's not just Rachel anymore. It's Serena. If I mess this up…"
"You won't," Kurt said firmly. "I know you, Finn. You have a big heart, and you care more than you give yourself credit for. If anyone can figure this out, it's you."
Finn gave him a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, man."
Kurt smirked, leaning back with an air of satisfaction. "That's what I'm here for. Just promise me one thing?"
"Sure. What's that?"
"Don't let fear hold you back," Kurt said seriously. "Rachel's taken some big risks in her life, and maybe it's your turn to take one too."
Finn nodded, his resolve solidifying. Maybe Kurt was right. Maybe it was time to stop letting the past dictate his future.
As they finished their coffee, Finn felt a flicker of hope, a small but growing certainty that the story between him and Rachel wasn't over yet.
