Finn sat on the porch of the house Rachel had called home for the last few years, his thoughts swirling with more questions than answers. The conversation with Kurt earlier had shed some light on his past with Rachel, but there were still so many pieces that didn't quite fit. It was like looking at a puzzle where half of the pieces were missing—like he had returned to Lima only to find that everything he thought he knew had changed.
He shifted uncomfortably in the chair, trying to sort through the tangled mess in his head.
One thing that kept nagging him was Kurt's sudden familiarity with Serena, something that hadn't made sense until now. Kurt had been a fixture in Rachel's life after high school, but how had Finn not known that his brother was still so involved? Why hadn't Kurt ever mentioned Serena, or the fact that Rachel had been raising a child on her own all this time? It seemed odd that Finn had to hear it from Rachel, and not his own brother.
The more he thought about it, the more it didn't sit right with him. How had Kurt kept this secret from him for so long? Were they all that disconnected? It was strange, considering how close they used to be. Sure, Kurt had stayed in Lima, while Finn had moved to New York, but still… there had to be some kind of communication. Had Kurt just been keeping his distance out of respect for Rachel? Or had there been something more?
And then there was the bigger question: why hadn't Finn known about Serena sooner? Wasn't he supposed to be Rachel's person? Her best friend? Her confidant? It was hard to wrap his mind around how he could've been so out of the loop. It stung in ways he hadn't expected.
Finn rubbed his temples, trying to focus on the bigger picture. It was clear that Rachel hadn't wanted to hide her daughter from him; she had let him meet Serena, after all. But he couldn't ignore the fact that there was so much of her life that he had missed—and not just since coming back to Lima.
"What happened to us, Rachel?" he muttered under his breath, not expecting an answer.
His mind flashed to the past—back to high school, to the moments when everything seemed so simple, so certain. He remembered their dreams, their plans for the future. He had wanted to be part of that future, had wanted to follow her to New York, to make a life together in the big city. But it hadn't turned out that way.
Finn thought back to that night—the night she had broken up with him before they left for New York. It felt like a lifetime ago, but the pain of it still lingered. She had said she couldn't hold him back, that he had to find his own path, just as she had to find hers. At the time, he had understood.
But now? Now he wasn't so sure. Was it really about her dreams, or was it something more? Had she truly let him go for the right reasons? Or had she simply felt like she was choosing between him and the life she thought she needed?
The question of why Finn had gone to New York in the first place lingered in his mind. It wasn't like it had been his dream to live there. He had wanted to support Rachel, to be there for her as she pursued her Broadway career. It had always been about her dreams, and maybe that was part of why it hadn't worked. He had sacrificed too much of himself.
But as much as he had resented the way things had ended, Finn couldn't help but feel a little jealous of Rachel, even now. She had come back to Lima, yes, but she had done it on her own terms. She had a life, a family, a purpose.
And what about her dreams? Did she still want to return to New York, to pick up where they left off? He didn't want to believe that a child should change everything—Rachel was still Rachel, and she still had that fire inside her, that same ambition. The only difference now was that she had a daughter to think about.
Finn's thoughts drifted back to Rachel, sitting inside with Serena. He couldn't help but wonder about the bigger picture—about what was going on behind the scenes. He hadn't asked about her dads yet, but it was starting to feel like there was a deeper reason why Rachel had moved back to Lima. He couldn't shake the feeling that there were things Rachel hadn't shared, things that might explain her decision to leave New York, to leave her dreams behind.
Where were her dads? Surely they played a role in her decision to come back to Lima, to raise Serena in a familiar environment. Had they been involved in her life, or were they the reason she had stayed away for so long?
It felt like there were so many unanswered questions about Rachel's past, about the choices she had made, and about how those choices had shaped the person she had become. He wanted to know more, but he didn't want to push her too hard.
Taking a deep breath, Finn stood up and walked back into the house. Rachel was sitting on the couch, Serena snuggled up against her, both of them absorbed in a quiet moment. He watched them for a moment, his heart swelling with a strange mixture of awe and confusion.
"Hey," he said softly, stepping into the room.
Rachel looked up, her eyes meeting his. She smiled, and for a moment, everything felt right again.
"Hey," she replied, her voice warm.
Finn sat down beside her, glancing at Serena. "She's really something, huh?"
Rachel smiled even wider. "Yeah, she is. She's everything."
Finn nodded. "I'm glad I met her. I'm glad I'm back here… with both of you."
Rachel's expression softened, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face. "There's a lot we need to talk about, Finn," she said, her voice quiet but serious.
"I know," he replied. "And I'm ready. I think we both have a lot of catching up to do."
But as Finn sat there, looking at the two of them, he couldn't shake the feeling that there were still things Rachel wasn't telling him. He wasn't sure what those things were, but he knew one thing for sure—he wasn't going to let her face them alone.
