They were sitting together in the living room, Serena tucked into bed for the night, the soft glow of the lamp casting shadows across the room. Finn had been asking more questions about Rachel's time in New York, trying to piece together the story of how everything had unfolded.
"Rachel, I know you've been through a lot," Finn said, his voice soft, "but I feel like there's still a part of your story you haven't told me. I mean, I get that Matt left and that he wasn't ready to be a dad, but... is that it? What happened?"
Rachel took a deep breath, her mind flashing back to that cold, rainy night when she had discovered the truth. Matt had been gone for months by the time she finally found out what had really happened. And it was the kind of betrayal that had broken her, all over again.
Finn watched her closely, waiting for her to speak.
"I don't know how to say this," Rachel began, her voice thick with emotion. She looked down at her hands, trying to gather the courage to say the words that had haunted her for so long. "Matt didn't just leave me because he was scared, Finn. That wasn't the whole story. There was someone else."
Finn's brow furrowed in confusion. "Someone else? You mean...?"
"Mrs. Allen," Rachel said quietly, almost as if saying the words out loud made it real. "Our musical theater professor. Matt and I were together when we were in college, and he... he was cheating on me with her. He had been seeing her for months before he left."
Finn sat back in his chair, his mouth opening and closing as if he didn't know what to say. He seemed to be processing the information, the shock on his face mirrored in the way Rachel's heart clenched.
"He was sleeping with her while we were together?" Finn finally managed, his voice tinged with disbelief.
Rachel nodded, feeling the sting of those memories all over again. "Yeah. I didn't find out until after he left. I thought he just panicked, that he didn't want to be a dad, but then I found messages. He had been texting her the entire time we were together. And when he left me, it wasn't because of the pregnancy... it was because he was already with her. He just disappeared."
Finn's expression shifted from shock to anger, his jaw tightening. "He did that to you? After everything? And then just ghosted you like you didn't matter?"
Rachel's eyes filled with tears as she nodded again. "I couldn't understand why he would do that, Finn. I couldn't understand why he would just leave me like that, and then... and then I found out it was because he was with her. And I didn't know how to make sense of it. It wasn't just the abandonment, it was the betrayal. It felt like everything we had was a lie."
Finn's fists clenched at his sides, his eyes full of hurt for Rachel. "I'm so sorry, Rach. No one deserves that. You didn't deserve that. You've been through so much."
Rachel shook her head, wiping away a tear that had escaped down her cheek. "I tried to be strong, Finn. I tried to keep going. But I couldn't do it alone. I couldn't keep pretending like everything was okay. So, I dropped out of school. I left New York. And I came home, to Lima, because I didn't know where else to go."
Finn reached out, his hand gently touching hers, grounding her. His touch was warm, comforting, and she felt a sense of relief just from having him there. "You don't have to apologize for that. You made the right choice. You're home now, and you've got people who love you, who will always be here for you. You're not alone anymore."
Rachel gave a small, sad smile. "I know. And I'm so grateful for that, Finn. But it doesn't change the fact that I thought I knew Matt. I thought he was the person I was supposed to build a future with. But he wasn't who I thought he was. He was someone completely different. And I don't know if I'll ever forgive him for that."
"You don't have to forgive him," Finn said firmly, his voice full of conviction. "You don't owe him anything. You've been strong through everything, and you don't have to carry the weight of his mistakes anymore. You deserve better than that."
Rachel looked at Finn, his words sinking deep into her heart. For the first time in years, she felt like maybe she could let go of the past. Maybe she could move forward, not just for herself, but for Serena, too. She had to be strong for her daughter. She couldn't keep holding onto the pain Matt had caused her.
"I don't know what the future holds, Finn," Rachel said, her voice soft. "But I know that I don't want to keep looking back. I want to focus on building something real. For Serena. For me. And if I can find a way to have that with you, then... then maybe that's enough."
Finn's expression softened, and for the first time in a long while, he gave her a smile that was full of hope. "We'll figure it out, Rachel. Together."
