The streets of New York City were a whirlwind of motion, a relentless symphony of honking taxis, chattering pedestrians, and street performers vying for attention. For Finn Hudson, it was equal parts exhilarating and overwhelming. The small-town boy from Lima, Ohio, had landed in a place that felt like a different universe.
Finn adjusted the strap of his backpack as he stepped onto the NYCU campus, the towering buildings casting long shadows over the sprawling lawns. It was the start of his first year at New York City University, and while he felt a mix of nervousness and excitement about the experience, one thought consumed him more than anything else: Rachel Berry.
She was supposed to be here, too.
It had been months since their emotional breakup in the McKinley High auditorium, and though Finn had reluctantly agreed to let her go, he hadn't been able to shake the hope that their paths would cross again. Rachel had always dreamed of New York—Broadway, the bright lights, the big city. NYADA had been her goal, and as far as Finn knew, she had gotten in.
But she was nowhere to be found.
Finn's first semester was a blur of adjusting to dorm life, attending classes, and navigating the city's chaotic public transportation. He spent his days bouncing between lectures, studying in the campus library, and trying to find his footing in a city that seemed intent on swallowing him whole.
At first, Finn found himself scanning every crowded hallway, every bustling café, every student event, hoping for a glimpse of Rachel's familiar face. He would linger in the arts building, where he figured she'd be rehearsing or attending voice lessons. He'd even gone so far as to check the bulletin boards for her name on audition announcements.
But Rachel Berry was nowhere to be seen.
"Dude, you've got to chill," Puck said one evening as they sat in Finn's dorm room. Puck had come to visit, eager to check out New York and crash on Finn's couch for a few days.
"I'm not freaking out," Finn replied, though his restless tapping on the desk said otherwise.
Puck smirked, leaning back in his chair. "You've been here for months, and you're still obsessing over Rachel. Maybe she's just busy, you know? Or maybe she doesn't want to see you."
Finn frowned, the words hitting harder than he wanted to admit. "She wouldn't avoid me. That's not who she is."
"Then why haven't you run into her yet?" Puck asked, shrugging. "This city's big, but it's not that big."
Finn didn't have an answer. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling.
The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months. By the end of the first semester, Finn had stopped actively searching, though the hope still lingered in the back of his mind. He threw himself into his studies and tried to make friends, joining the college's intramural basketball team and attending campus events.
He discovered a love for media studies and began exploring the idea of becoming a sports broadcaster—a career that felt both exciting and achievable. It wasn't the life he had envisioned when he first came to New York, but it was starting to feel like it could be his.
One cold January morning, Finn found himself sitting in a small coffee shop near campus, sipping a steaming cup of hot chocolate as he flipped through his notes for an upcoming exam. The shop was quiet, a welcome break from the usual chaos of the city.
As the door jingled open, Finn glanced up out of habit, his heart skipping a beat as he caught sight of a brunette with long, dark hair stepping inside.
For a moment, he thought it was Rachel. The girl had her back to him, her posture and movements so familiar it made his chest ache.
But when she turned, Finn's hope deflated. It wasn't her.
He let out a sigh, shaking his head at himself. "Get it together, Hudson," he muttered under his breath.
The barista called his name, signaling that his sandwich was ready. Finn stood, grabbing his things and heading to the counter. As he reached for the plate, his eyes caught a flyer tacked to the bulletin board beside the counter.
NYADA Winter Showcase: January 15th, 7 PM
Finn's stomach flipped.
It was a long shot, but maybe—just maybe—Rachel would be there.
The night of the showcase, Finn found himself sitting in the audience of the NYADA theater, his heart pounding with anticipation. He scanned the program, searching for Rachel's name among the list of performers.
It wasn't there.
Disappointment settled over him, but he stayed for the performance, hoping she might still be in the audience.
As the night went on, Finn clapped along with the crowd, appreciating the talent on display but feeling a deep sense of emptiness. By the time the showcase ended, he was no closer to finding Rachel than he had been months ago.
By the end of his first year at NYCU, Finn had come to terms with the reality that Rachel wasn't in New York—or if she was, she didn't want to be found. He told himself it was time to let go, to focus on building his own life and stop clinging to a dream that wasn't meant to be.
But even as he tried to move on, a small part of him couldn't help but wonder where she was and why she had stayed away.
As Finn packed up his dorm room and prepared to head back to Lima for the summer, he made a silent promise to himself: no matter where life took him, he wouldn't give up on the hope that their paths would cross again.
For now, though, he had to let go.
