Chapter 5

I Dream of Cows

"Here's my phone number," Julie sighed, tapping her foot, as she waited for the adults to finish doing all the technical work, like exchanging numbers and everything, "I'll be in a meeting for about an hour, but if Julie starts acting up, call me, ASAP, and I'll come get her."

"Julie will be an angel for me," Heidi smiled to Carlos, as they exchanged numbers, "She'll be too busy with farm work to be bad."

Julie looked over to Heidi, who winked at her, stuffing her hands in her overall pockets. Julie smiled and then turned to her father, "Papi, come on, hurry up, the morning's going by without us helping the cows!"

"Be a good girl," Julie nodded her head as her Papi ruffled her hair, "I'll see you later, if you're not too attached to the cows."

"I make no promises," Julie swore, sticking her tongue out before racing off the porch and over to Heidi's waiting golf cart, "Let's go Heidi!"

"Coming!" Heidi made her way over to the golf and sat on the driver's side, turning the cart on, "Let's go, Fleur and her Papa are waiting, with breakfast."

It was a fast trip from her home to Heidi's home and goodness, Julie loved Heidi's house. It was larger than her and Papi's house and made of brick, with a front veranda that had beige furniture and trees surrounding it. Pasture land went as far as Julie could see, with brown cows happily grazing and being tended to. The bar was just like the house, but smaller and there were several other buildings near it.

"This is such a huge place! Wow," Julie said as Heidi pulled up to the driveway to the big house, "Do you live by yourself here?"

"Yes, but sometimes, Fleur stays over," Heidi said, turning off the cart and sliding out of it, "Come on, I think it's French toast for breakfast."

Julie did love French toast for breakfast, so she quite happily followed Heidi into her house, which looked like everything in there was expensive. Heidi placed a hand on Julie's back and led her past a doorway and into a huge kitchen. She saw Fleur at the kitchen table, coloring in her book and when she turned her head to where someone was hustling at the stove she startled.

The blond hair at the stove was a giant! He was way taller than her Papi! He looked like a lumber jack man with his red plaid shirt, and his dark blue jeans to the boots he wore. He had a frilly, white apron on and when the blond haired man turned to look at them, his bright green eyes sparkled with amusement and he said, in a deep voice, "Well hello there, I'm Diesel, who might you be?"

"I'm Julie Manoso, I'm gonna be Fleur's friend!" Julie said, making Fleur look up from her work.

"JULIE!" Fleur exclaimed, sliding out of her chair and over to Julie, hugging, "I'm so happy you're here!"

"Manoso?" The man's eyes seemed to shine with joy, "Well...now that's a surprise," The man put down the bowl in his hands and walked over to Julie and placed a hand on her head, "Small world, you're just like him, aren't you."

"No way, I'm cooler than Papi!" Julie looked up at the man who laughed out loud and looked down at her.

"Yeah, you are, but, you have something that he has too, he just denies it, is all," Diesel waved off Julie, "Say, how about you and Fleur go sit and I'll finish the French Toast."

Julie looked at the man and then let Fleur lead her to the large, wooden kitchen table. She looked at the man and then helped Fleur finish coloring the picture. The man felt different too, like there was something buzzing under his skin. It wasn't scary, it was almost nice and pleasant, like how Heidi felt. He smelt like Christmas, like sugar cookies, snow, evergreen and all things winter. He looked like a kindly man, almost like a young Santa Claus.

Julie looked over to Fleur, who was busy with her thing. She too hummed with something, just like everyone in the house. Did….Julie buzz too? Did her Papi buzz too? Was she just imagining things?

"French Toast!" Diesel exclaimed, setting plates down in front of Julie and Fleur laden with french toast, bacon and fruit, "Enjoy-" Diesel turned suddenly and held out a napkin, right in front of Heidi's face, "And you, here is your meal, now go check on your cows."

Julie smiled as Heidi huffed and walked over to backdoor and left. The trio ate, chatting and giggling and before long, Diesel was shooing them into the mudroom to put on their mud boots. Julie looked down at her new boots and saw they were dark green color, her favorite color, and slipped them on before running out the back door, with Fleur.

"Come on, it's time to go massage the cows," Fleur said, grabbing Julie's hand, "I like massaging the cows!

"Why do we have to massage the cows?" Julie asked, as Fleur led her to the barn, "Sounds silly."

"We massage them to make them happy, silly," Fleur said, with a smile on her face, opening the side door to the barn, "I love massaging them, they're like big puppies!"

Fleur led Julie into the barn and Julie had to stop and stare in awe. The inside of the barn was so large that it looked even bigger than the outside. Julie didn't even smell cow poop! It was so calm and lovely inside and warm. There was a huge lake too, and by the lake were a herd of cows, huge black cows, like the cow that walked up to their front yard. They looked to be in states of relaxed, with people rubbing at them, brushing them and taking care of their needs.

"Auntie Heidi!" Fleur exclaimed, running over to where the woman sat, rubbing Sakura's ear, as the cow's head was in her lap, "Here's Julie, we have to teach her how to massage the cows!"

Heidi smiled to Julie and motioned for the child to come over, "Come on over, Sakura is the most affectionate cow in the barn," Julie got down on her knees, in silky soft grass and let Heidi take her hand, "She loves children."

Sakura turned her head and let out a 'Moo,' before licking Julie's hand. Julie smiled and ran a hand over the cow's ears, watching as Fleur began to knead Sakura's rump, said cow making noises of bliss. Julie crinkled her brow and asked Heidi, "Heidi, why do we have to massage the cows?"

"Because," Heidi said, scratching the underside of Sakura's chin, "A well relaxed and massage cow, is a very happy cow and better meat," Julie watched as Sakura looked up at Heidi, "Except for Sakura, you silly goose, you'll be here for the rest of your life."

Julie moved her hands to Sakura's rump, who looked at her with anticipation. She began to knead the cow's rump enjoying the noises Sakura made as she was massage. The cow leaned into her waiting hands, eyes closing as she enjoyed all the attention. Julie looked up to Heidi and smiled, "She's so cute, but I wish you raised camels instead."

"Camels?" Heidi asked, as she nuzzled Sakura, "Why camels?"

Julie shifted on her bottom, "Because they're so hardcore! They eat cactus, do you know any other animal that eats cactus, with all their sharp needles?!"

"I don't really know any other animals like that," Heidi turned to Fleur, "Do you?"

"Nope, but I like cows the best!" Fleur said as she began to speak French to Sakura making Julie squint.

"Can you speak French?" Heidi asked Julie, who shook her head firmly, "Oh, well, My sister and I and Diesel can speak it."

"My Papi and I speak Spanish, so it almost is the same," Julie said as she continued to pet Sakura, "Can you teach me how to speak French?"

"Can we teach her, Auntie Heidi?" Fleur asked, turning to Heidi, "Then we can tell secrets to one another!"

"I don't see why not," Heidi said, pushing Sakura off her lap, "But first, we have to do deliveries, come on Julie, we always have lunch on delivery days at the Silly Shack."

Julie sat between Heidi and Fleur, in Heidi's delivery van, eating cookies from the last delivery. They were quite delicious but the prospect of a milkshake and a burger had Julie more excited. Julie was halfway out her seat, with Fleur right behind her, as both the side door and passenger door opened at once.

Diesel slipped his head into the side and he grabbed the last of the deliveries saying, "Sorry kiddos, we're all out of burgers!"

"Not the burgers!" Fleur shouted as she began to climb on top of Julie's back, "Papa, we sell burgers, how do we run out of the burgers?!"

"We had a big catering order," Diesel said as he hefted almost 300 pounds of ground Wagyu beef on his shoulder, "They took all our meat!"

"Oh no, are we not going to have lunch?!" Julie asked as she let Fleur cling to her back, "We're just going to have to eat ice cream for lunch!"

"Oh! Ice cream for lunch?!" Fleur's grin widened as the group walked into the restaurant, "I want milkshakes for lunch!"

"As if, your mother would kill me," Diesel grinned and walked away from the group, into the back kitchen, "Your mom ordered Chinese for lunch, it's waiting for us."

"Shrimp and noodles!" Fleur jumped off Julie's back and raced over to the table, where Brittany sat going through carry out containers, "Maman got my favorite!"

"Of course I did," Brittany said, turning to Julie, "It's great to see you again, Julie, how are you enjoying your day?"

Wow, Julie thought as she sat at the table with Fleur, Ms. Brittany and Heidi were twins. They looked just alike, beside their hair styles. They even had the same humming as well. Though it might be confusing for some people to tell them apart, Julie could by how they smelled. Brittany smelled like sweet cream, ice cream and cake and all things summer, while Heidi smelled like fruits, almost tropical like and summer as well. The air in the shop was humming with their strangeness but Julie enjoyed it.

"Help yourself, Julie," Brittany said as Diesel joined them for lunch, "We have nearly everything from the Chinese shop, they have a wonderful Peking duck."

"Papi and I always eat Chinese on Saturday, except he tries to get us to eat healthy," Julie made a face, "He's always tells me, when I eat my cereal that 'it'll kill me,' but all Papi eats is bark!"

"You know," Diesel said, leaning forward, putting his chopsticks down, "I used to work with your Papi from time to time, back before I retired. He's an okay guy, We'll have to invite him to the house for a cook out, would be nice for him to meet the Missus and spawn."

"Is that the man who's allergic to you?" Julie giggled at the question Brittany asked, "Oh, Diesel, why would you make him suffer?"

"We're BFFs, that's why," Diesel winked to Fleur and Julie, who both giggled, "I'll tone it down, if I have to."

Julie enjoyed the rest of lunch with Fleur and the adults, teaching Fleur how to use chopsticks and asking Diesel all about her Papi. Lunch was a fun affair and it ended with delicious red velvet cake and ice cream. When the last of her cake was licked off her spoon, Julie let out a yawn, rubbing her full belly and leaning against Fleur, who sleepily nuzzled against Julie. She listened to soft chatter from the adults and before she knew it her eyes were closing and she was sleeping peacefully, the hum inside the shop cocooning in a soft blanket.

She had dreams of Fleur and her petting the cows and running through the fields before hopping on Sakura and flying into the sky. She remembered telling dream Fleur that riding on a camel would be even more fun and the younger child had blinked and said to Julie, 'Okay!' before Sakura had transformed into a large camel and flew up to the sun, before they fell into soft clouds that began to slowly carry them in the sky.

Julie swore one of the clouds sounded like Heidi, the one that was holding her, "She had a long day...and a hearty lunch."

Julie felt herself being placed on a firmer cloud, that sounded like her Papi, "She wasn't any trouble, was she?"

"Not at all, in fact she was a good…" Julie let out a sigh and then fell into a deep sleep.

When she woke, she found herself in her bedroom, with the afternoon sky shining in her room. Julie let out a yawn and stretched like a cat, before rolling out her bed and shuffling out of her room, climbing down the stairs and finding her Papi lounging on the couch, reading a book. He didn't look up from said book as he said, "How'd you sleep, Julie?"

"I slept good, I had a dream Fleur and I were flying in the sky on Sakura but then I said flying on a camel would be more fun and so we rode on a camel and fell onto clouds, and they were so soft that I fell asleep and woke up in my room, like magic!" Julie hung on the back of the couch, looking at her Papi.

"Like magic," Carlos gave Julie a smile and then closed his book, "Heidi said you had fun."

"I did! Can I go again, tomorrow, everyday, in fact can I live there!?" Julie asked as Carlos covered his mouth, "I wanna spend all summer at the farm!"

"What about being a Ranger?" Julie crinkled her brow at that question, but then shook her head, "You don't want to be one now?"

"No! I do! But, can Fleur join us in becoming Rangers? I think she would be a great Ranger, she can speak French! They're going to teach me French!" Julie flipped on the couch and fell on Carlos's lap, "I'm having a blast and I didn't even set anything on fire!"

"We can all rest easy knowing Julie induced fires are a thing in the past…" Julie's Papi said, making Julie yowl out, "PAPI!"
