Sabaku no Kitsune: Chapter 58
Land of Fire; outside the root base: With Naruto and the others
Naruto and his group appeared in a puff of smoke and the first things that he saw was a forest and all the ninja he was with crouched down taking cover. Naruto and his group fell to a knee and stayed in silence for a few minutes.
The entire force of Anbu and jonin stayed perfectly quiet as they listened for any foreign noises; Naruto looked around trying to gauge where everyone was and when he did he spotted Jiraya, Gaara, Kakashi, Obito and Bee.
Jiraya seeing Naruto waved him over and Naruto quietly ran over and took cover with Jiraya and the others; Naruto came to a stop and Naruto whispered "hey guys, what's up?" Naruto whispered and Jiraya smiled.
"Nothing much kid, just waiting to see if a patrol is going to scout the area" Jiraya whispered and he listened around "so far we haven't seen anything; we should move to the outer perimeter and scout them out". Naruto and the others nodded and Jiraya continued "Naruto, Kakashi, and Obito with me; also find Sasuke, Anko and Hinata, we'll need them" he said and Naruto nodded.
"Ok, give me a few seconds" Naruto said as he walked off and began looking around the large group of ninja trying to find the others.
10 minutes later; Root base outer perimeter
Naruto, Jiraya, Kakashi, Obito, Sasuke, Anko and Hinata all were taking cover in a heavily forested area just outside the perimeter of the root base. Kakashi, Obito, Sasuke and Hinata were all using their ocular jutsu to scan the area and the base defenses.
They were currently looking at the back entrance of the compound which was comprised of large metal door that opened outwards and a tall chain linked fence with barb wire on top surrounding it. The perimeter of the fence was about 50 yards in circumference with the door and had nearly 30 root ninja guarding it.
"Looks heavily defended" Naruto said in a whisper "I bet you its because of Temari escaping".
"Most definitely" Jiraya said as he looked through his binoculars "What do you guys see?".
Kakashi, Obito and Sasuke all looked at him and Kakashi spoke up "another ten ninja hiding behind genjutsu, bringing the total amount of hostiles to forty".
Hinata then spoke up as she scanned with her byakugan "I can also see through the main door that there is a group of a dozen guards on the inside" she said before turning off her byakugan.
Jiraya hearing this put away his binoculars and sighed "this might be difficult, but doable" he said before looking at Anko "Anko, you're the infiltration and assassination expert here; what do you recommend?"
Anko tapped her chin for a few seconds before nodding "we attack the inside first and then the outside" Anko said and everyone looked at her "Obito will bring me, Kakashi, Naruto, Kurumi and Sakura inside and we'll take out the guards". "Once we take them out and hopefully they don't trip the alarm Naruto will send you a toad and you can attack from the outside" Anko said "but we still want the element of surprise; so have Kurenai put up a genjutsu and then go in Guy, Lee, Sasuke and Hinata in to either kill or incapacitate them".
Jiraya hearing this nodded and spoke "alright, I'll stay here with Hinata and Sasuke and keep watch; start when ever you're ready, but be quick about it" Jiraya said "it's already thirty minutes after dawn; I want to attack when they are still asleep".
"Alright pervy sage" Naruto said as he got to a knee "wish us luck"; Naruto walked off with Obito, Anko and Kakashi leaving Jiraya alone with Sasuke and Hinata.
"Itachi is in there" Sasuke said in a whisper "I finally get to put my past to rest once and for all".
Hinata looked at Sasuke and felt a little nervous; she had not talked to him much even during the academy days and she was a little uncomfortable around him; Hinata swallowed hard and spoke.
"W-what are you going to do after?" Hinata said nervously "when he's dead?"
Sasuke looked at her and spoke "I'm going to go home and live in peace" Sasuke said simply before looking back.
Hinata hearing this was surprised at his response, she half expected his response to be more dark; Hinata smiled and looked back at the compound "I'm thinking about moving to Suna; I rather not live in Konoha after all they've put me through" she said.
"I feel the same way" Sasuke said; Jiraya looked at the quick conversation in surprise.
'An Uchiha and a Hyuga having a pleasant conversation?' Jiraya thought in surprise 'never though I'd live to see the day that would happen'.
30 minutes later; Inside the Root base: With Naruto, Obito, Kakashi, Kurumi, Anko and Sakura
Inside the root base on the other side of the large metal door a vortex appeared on the ceiling of the building; Naruto, Obito, Kurumi, Kakashi, Anko and Sakura all appeared from the vortex and used the wall walking jutsu to stand on the ceiling.
Staying completely quiet they all looked down and saw twelve root chunin standing in pairs in various locations; Anko got their attention and she made hand gestures and began pointing out where their targets were going to be.
Everyone nodded and stealthily moved along the ceiling until they were above their targets; when everyone was in place Anko did a count down with her hand 'five…four…three…two…one… go' she thought and all at once they attacked.
Naruto took out 2 kunai and charged them with wind chakra before throwing them at his targets below; the kunai flew down silently and hit both of the chunin in the crown of their skulls, going through, exiting the underside of their mouths before sticking in the concrete floor.
Kakashi jumped down with a kunai in each hand and landed on top of his 2 targets landing with all his body weight; he then thrusted his kunai into the base of their skulls killing them.
Kurumi jumped down from the ceiling taking out her sword and activating her sharingan; she landed behind her two target who turned around and she attacked. Kurumi sent a single slash hitting the first chunin in the mouth sending the top of his head flying; the sword continued and the tip hit the other ninja in the throat severing his arteries and his wind pipe.
Sakura leapt down as well and landed in front of her target and threw 2 simultaneous punches at the chunin aiming for their noses; her chakra powered punches slammed into their noses caving in their faces and sending bone fragments into their brains.
Obito kamui'd behind his 2 target and grabbed the first one around the neck and with one swift motion broke his neck, severing his brain stem and killing him. The second ninja was about to shout but Obito darted forward and punched him in the throat crushing his wind pipe.
Anko shot 2 her snakes from her sleeve down towards her 2 targets and both snakes opened their mouths and sank their fangs into their necks; both of the ninja jumped away before stumbling to the ground. Both began to convulse violently and after a few seconds they stopped moving as they died.
Anko and Naruto jumped down from the ceiling and the entire group formed up "easy peasy" Anko said with a smile before looking at Naruto "Ok blondie, let the perv know he's good".
"Right" Naruto said as he bit his thumb before going through hand signs and slamming his hand onto the ground; a small toad appeared and Naruto spoke "tell pervy sage he's good to go".
"Right boss" the toad said before puffing into smoke.
Outside the base: With Jiraya, Sasuke, Guy, Lee, Hinata and Kurenai
Jiraya was waiting with Sasuke, Guy, Lee, Hinata and Kurenai in the trees outside the base; Jiraya was anxiously waiting for the signal from Naruto in order to go out there and take out the guards.
Suddenly a toad popped behind them and the toad spoke "Naruto says you're good to go" the toad said before vanishing.
"Alright then" Jiraya said with a nod before looking at Kurenai "excuse me my beautiful Kurenai; can you put up a large genjutsu to mask us?"
Kurenai hearing this rolled her eyes and spoke "yes lord Jiraya" Kurenai said before going through hand signs 'damn pervert, can't stop drooling over women; even on a mission'. Kurenai finished her hand signs and spoke "alright give it a few seconds to take effect" Kurenai said.
……
One of the root chunin on the other side of the fence guarding the entrance was standing next to one of his comrades when he felt a strange feeling washing over him 'huh… what was that?' he thought.
Suddenly a tree shot out of the ground and wrapped itself around himself making him unable to move; as the tried to break free he felt a pang in his chest and he coughed out blood. He looked down and saw a branch sticking out of his chest.
Sasuke was rushing in along with Jiraya and the others as he reloaded his crossbow; Sasuke shot the first chunin who was frozen in place by Kurenai's genjutsu killing him with a shot to the heart.
Jiraya and the others jumped over the fence and landed in the area occupied by the enemy and began to quickly take out the guards.
Guy and Lee began to run as fast as they could without their usual boisterous attitudes and began to attack; both Guy and Lee began to throw punches at the enemy hitting them in the head. Their attacks were no-lethal as the root ninja began to fall to the ground unconscious one after another as they moves as fast as they could.
Hinata was doing something similar as she was using her gentle fist taijutsu to hit her targets in the stomach to disrupt their chakra network and knock them out. Hinata ran up to another chunin and was about to hit him when suddenly he came back to his senses; the chunin took out a kunai and slashed at Hinata.
Hinata seeing this ducked under the kunai and countered by hitting him in the elbow making his arm go numb and drop the kunai; Hinata followed up by sending another strike to his stomach shutting down his chakra system and sending him to the ground.
Kurenai ran up and took out a dozen shuriken and threw them at six of the genjutsu bound ninja; she hit each of them twice, once in the neck and once in the forehead killing them.
Jiraya attacked several of the ninja either kicking or punching them in the head; after a few minutes all the enemy ninja were taken out.
"Alright then" Jiraya said as he made a motion towards the woods across from the fence; this was the signal for everyone in hiding to come out and make their way to the entrance. A few seconds later the door opened revealing Naruto and his group on the other side.
"Ok, what's next pervy sage?" Naruto asked and Jiraya looked at him and spoke.
"Next, we enter and begin to take out all our enemies" Jiraya said as he pointed at Naruto "Naruto, you and Gaara go and find Shikamaru and take him out".
"Alright" Naruto said with a nod before looking at Gaara "looks like we're working together".
"We will accomplish that objective" Gaara said before narrowing his eyes "he must pay for taking Temari"; Naruto got a dark look on his face and he nodded.
"Trust me; he won't make it out of here alive" Naruto said.
Jiraya hearing this nodded before looking over to Anko "Anko, take Guy, Lee, Kurenai and Hinata and go kill Orochimaru" Jiraya said and Anko nodded.
"I thought you'd never ask" Anko said with a smile.
Lee looked over to Hinata and spoke "you ready Hinata?" Lee asked and Hinata nodded.
"Yes, I am" Hinata said with confidence.
"With the power of youth we'll accomplish this mission" Guy said with a smile.
Jiraya looked over to Kakashi and spoke "Kakashi, you take Obito, Kurumi and Sasuke and take out Itachi" Jiraya said "I hate to say it, but he's out biggest threat".
"Can do" Kakashi said with an eye smile.
"We'll get it done" Obito said.
"He's going to pay for what he did to me" Kurumi said before looking at her scarred shoulder where he stabbed her "damn bastard; my arm has never been the same".
Jiraya looked then looked to Bee and Yugito "you two will be with me; we'll take on Danzo ourselves" he said and both of the Kumo jinchuriki.
"Lets do it" Bee said while adjusting his shades.
"Sounds like a plan" Yugito said.
Jiraya turned to Katsu, Sakura and Karin and spoke "As for you three ladies, you're going to take out Asuka and Shikamaru's second in command Kama" Jiraya said and 3 girls nodded "Don't underestimate either of them; according to the reports Asuka was the person who killed Shizune".
Sakura got an angry look on her face, she and Shizune were close due to being apprentices to Tsunade; to Sakura it was as personal as it could get.
"She won't slip away again" Sakura said with a scowl "for Shizune".
"I'm with you Sakura" Karin said a she adjusted her glasses "we should've killed her all those years ago in that inn".
"Man, a lot of negative energy from you guys; this Asuka must be a real piece of work" Katsu said "but hey, she's an enemy; well get rid of her".
"You all have your orders; now move out" Jiraya said.
Naruto, Jiraya, Gaara and the others all began to rush into the base as their assault finally began.
With Sakura, Karin and Katsu
Sakura, Karin and Katsu were all running down a hallway on the first level of the root base; all around them there was the various anbu and jonin from the alliance going around and taking out the various enemies that tried to stop them.
This level like Temari had mentioned was repurposed into a hospital for the wounded; the doctors, nurses, orderlies and guards who were tending to the patients were caught off guard and were killed by the anbu. The anbu even killed several wounded ninja who were trying to fight them off despite their injuries.
Sakura felt a little uncomfortable with this as she was a medic and a doctor and fighting in a hospital felt wrong; however she squashed those feeling down as she and her squad looked for their two targets, Asuka and Kama.
As they turned down another hallway suddenly an alarm began to sound "looks like our cover is blown" Karin said as she used her 'minds eye' to scope out the area. "Damn this is such a clutter, there's too many people here" Karin said as she tried to sort out the thousands of chakra signatures running around.
As they ran down the hall 3 root ninja appeared in their path and spotted them "there they are" one of them shouted as he and his comrades took out some kunai and charged at the group.
"Allow me ladies" Katsu said as she began to go through hand sign "Ice Style: Ice Sparrows"; Katsu created a dozen ice sparrows and launched them at the group of root ninja. They raised up their kunai and began to block them.
2 of the root ninja were hit by the ice sparrows and were killed but the leader was able to defend himself and charge at the group; Sakura seeing this balled up her fist and when he was close he sent a slash towards her.
"Take this bitch" he shouted as he slashed at her; Sakura seeing this ducked under the kunai and threw a punch.
"Out of my damn way" Sakura shouted as she drove her fist into his gut and sent him flying down the hall into a concrete wall; the ninja crashed into the wall and it spiderwebbed from the impact.
"Damn that was one hell of a hit" Katsu said praising Sakura's strength and Sakura gave her a thumbs up.
As this was going on Karin was still scanning around trying to find Asuka's or Kama's chakra signature; a moment later she then got a hit and spoke up "I think I found them" Karin said and Sakura and Katsu looked at her. "They're both on this level follow me" Karin said as she got to the front of the formation.
"Lead the way Karin" Sakura said as she and Katsu followed her.
First Level: With Asuka and Kama
"Damn it, what the hell is going on?" Asuka shouted as she and Kama were running down large hallway in a separate wing of the first level with a dozen root anbu following them.
"From the sound of it, it sounds like an attack" Kama said as she ran beside Asuka "but how is this possible; this location is a secret and everyone has a secrecy seal?"
"I don't know" Asuka said "but we have to get in there and fend them off until Itachi and Shikamaru can-"; Asuka paused and stopped dead in her tracks making the others confused until she saw what she was looking at.
A large flock of ice sparrows was coming towards Asuka and her group and Asuka immediately went through hand signs "Fire Style: Fireball jutsu; Asuka launched a massive fireball down the hall towards the sparrows, hitting and destroying them and both jutsu's canceled each other out.
However this wasn't the end to the ordeal, because as soon as this happened ice began to rush across the ground, walls and ceiling heading towards Asuka and her group. The ice shot past them and continued down the hall; when the ice reached the entrance that Asuka and her group took to enter the hallway it formed into a thick wall effectively blocking their only avenue of escape.
"Crap, we're boxed in" Kama shouted as she and her group looked forward; coming down the hall was Sakura, Katsu and Karin rushing towards them.
Katsu used her ice style in order to block off the area where Asuka and Kama just came from; Katsu made another hand sign and a wall of ice formed behind her and her group sealing the other end of the hall way.
"All right you two, both ends are sealed" Katsu said to Sakura and Karin "they aren't going anywhere anytime soon".
"Good job Katsu" Sakura said as she Karin and Katsu stopped and looked at Asuka and her group "Hello again, remember me?"
"Wait a minute, I recognize you; you were with Tsunade during the escape" Asuka said before looking around and pointing at Karin "and you're that red head who was with Naruto". "So does that mean he's here?" Asuka asked and Karin nodded.
"Yeah, he is; too bad you won't be seeing him though" Karin said as she summoned out her chakra chains "because you're going to die right here, right now".
"Couldn't have said it better myself" Katsu said as she created her ice claws "I'll take on their anbu; you guys handle those two".
"Right" Sakura said as she clenched her fists and glared at Asuka "this is for all the people you killed Asuka; you're screwed".
Asuka hearing this scowled and brought out her twin hook swords "Kama, handle the red head" Asuka ordered "the pink haired one is mine".
"Very well" Kama said as she took out her short sword "lets get rid of these vermin shall we?"
On the third level: With Kakashi, Obito, Kurumi and Sasuke
"Go, go, go; get up to the first level" a root ninja shouted as he and dozens of others all scrambled to get to the first level to fight off the assault that was taking place.
In a dark hallway a black vortex appeared and Kakashi, Obito, Kurumi and Sasuke all got out of it and landed all of them taking cover in the shadows.
"Damn this place is going nuts" Obito said as shouts and foot steps echoed through the hallways "are we sure Itachi is on this level?"
"If what Temari said was accurate Itachi should be here" Kakashi said to Obito "then again her memory is hazy considering her state of mind at the time". "Either way it's our best lead, and we need to ensure that he doesn't join the others in repelling the attack" Kakashi said "so lets go and find him".
"Alright Kakashi sensei; lead the way" Kurumi said.
"Lets end this" Sasuke said.
Kakashi and his group put on henge's and through the halls of the third level trying to look for the area Itachi supposedly held his command at; disguised as root ninja they ran by other root ninja who were too distracted by the ongoing attack to pay them much attention.
'Alright, so Temari said Itachi's quarters was in area five zero five' Kakashi thought 'all we have to do is find it and then take him out'; as Kakashi and his group navigated their way through the halls the enemy presence continued to rise.
Some root ninja were in full combat gear but most were not; some were wearing sleepwear, some only had some pants and their pouches on and some even were rushing into battle in only their underpants and carrying a sword.
'We really did catch these people by surprise' Kurumi thought as she looked around 'this is fucking madness'; after running through the chaotic halls for a few minutes Obito spotted what they were looking for.
"Look, five zero five" Obito said and everyone looked at the large white numbers on the wall near a set of double doors.
"Alright everyone; get ready" Kakashi said as he and his group reached the door; everyone paused and got ready to enter the room, their hearts pounding and their breaths shaking 'Kami give me strength' Kakashi thought.
Kakashi put his hand on the door and pushed it open and everyone rushed in; upon entering the room they were shocked by several things.
The room appeared to be a large wooden dojo that reminded Sasuke and Obito of the one in the old Uchiha compound; the entire area was illuminated by oil lanterns and the whole place looked out of place in the cold concrete environment that made up the rest of the compound.
But was most shocking was the fact that Itachi sat in the middle of the wooden room with his eyes closed; Itachi was in full anbu gear including a sword, sitting there completely calm and focused. Itachi then opened his eyes and looked up at the four intruders "Hello Kakashi, Obito, Kurumi" he said calmly before turning his head over to Sasuke "and hello little brother; long time no see".
Sasuke was perplexed by this and he spoke "you seem pretty nonchalant considering I've been dead for several years" he said and Itachi stared dully at him.
"Foolish little brother; I knew you were alive" Itachi said shocking everyone as he got to his feet "it's a rule inside the Anbu; if there is no body, then there was no kill". "I went through dozens of reports and there was never a mention of a dead body of your description" Itachi said "I had a feeling you were hiding somewhere". Itachi looked over to Kakashi "You were the one who taught me that rule Kakashi; how can you forget your own lesson?" Itachi said.
"Well the fact I found a severed arm and a blood trail to a river gave me a strong indication Sasuke probably died" Kakashi said "but this isn't about Sasuke; this is about you".
"I know; why do you think I'm waiting here" Itachi said as he got to his feet "I sensed your presence when you all arrived on this level; I figured you were coming for me, so why would I run?"
"Ok you arrogant prick, this is gettin' annoying" Kurumi said as she brought out her sword and activated her sharingan "I'm not here to talk, I'm here to kick your ass".
"Atta girl Kurumi" Obito said as he took out a kunai and got into a stance "I won't let you get away this time Itachi".
Kakashi raised his forehead protector and revealed his sharingan "you're going to pay for what you did Itachi" Kakashi said "the Uchiha clan, Yugao, working with Danzo; you're reign of terror is at an end".
Sasuke activated his sharingan and threw off his cloak and grabbed his crossbow "I've waited a long time for this" Sasuke said "and believe me when I say this; tonight will be the first time in a long time I sleep in peace".
Itachi looked at them dully and spoke "words… nothing but hollow words" Itachi said as he took out his sword and got into a kenjutsu stance "I'll let my blade do my taking for me". Itachi activated his sharingan and glared at the group in front of him "let us begin shall we?" Itachi said before rushing forward.
"Get him" Kurumi shouted as she and her group all ran forward to clash blades.
