After the shock of seeing Goma's pinkie toe being pulled and stretched to an incredible height, Fujina instantly texted Sora, apologized to Inko and Izuku, and picked up Goma to go to their car. Thankfully, Fujina got Inko's phone number so they could communicate again.
When Goma was put in the car at the back, Fujina started the car and drove over to their home.
Goma, a little confused, sat there silently...he didn't know how he stretched his pinkie toe like that, and seeing his mom react to that, it made him feel a little...bad? He didn't mean to scare his mom...
"...Momma?" Goma asked her.
"Y-Yes, G-Goma-Honey?" Fujina said, a little startled, trying to keep her eyes on the road. She almost sounded...confused as well?
"...I...didn't do anything bad, did I?" he asked his mother.
"N-No! No, Honey, you didn't. It's just...It's just a...well, what you did was a shock is all," she explained.
"A shock?" Goma sat there, lowering his head as he thought about that saying, "..." he looked up at his mother, "I didn't electrocute you, did I?"
Fujina was silent for a second, until she chuckled, albeit in a nervous way, "N-No, no, dear. I'm just...surprised is what I meant."
"Oh...you mean, when I stretched my pinkie toe, you were surprised?" he asked her.
"Y-Yes. I was...v-very surprised."
"..." Goma looked at his bare foot, his shoe also being in the car. He remembered the pinkie toe stretching...he felt...a little surprised as well...
"...I think I was too, Momma," Goma told her.
She glanced at the rearview mirror to look at the boy in the back seat, seeing his face express some curiosity.
Still driving, Fujina was silent...until she asked him, "Goma...did you know you can do that?"
Goma shook his head, "No. I didn't know I even could."
"..." Fujina kept looking at the road ahead, the pull of worry tugging inside of her. "...Goma. Did you happen to know what doctor you went to to find out if you had a Quirk or not?"
"Huh? Um..." Goma thought about it, putting a hand on his chin as he had a thinking face on, "Hmm...I don't know his name, but he looked a little bit like Chopper."
"Chopper?" Fujina repeated, a little confused.
Chopper...that was the little animal doctor that Goma mentioned in his story. He was part of that crew of pirate characters...Chopper was a...reindeer-person from what I heard?
Goma still sat there thinking about what transpired back then. "...I think that Chopper doctor was checking to see if I had a Quirk...yeah, I think he was. He said I wouldn't have one, but...I guess he was wrong?"
Fujina kept driving, her mind being filled with curious thoughts on what was happening with Goma...
"...We need to see your father first. We'll wait for him and your brother to come back home when we reach there. In the meantime, don't worry, Goma, you're not in trouble. This has been just a very big bombshell that's dropped onto us."
Goma looked up at his mother and blinked, "Uh, okay...does that mean a big surprise?"
She couldn't help but smile at her son, "Yes, something like that."
"Oh. Okay..." he lowered his head just a bit to think some more...he lifted it back up and asked his mother, "You and Daddy, as well as Big Bro won't...act all differently now that I got a Quirk, will you?"
"What?" Fujina had to glance back at Goma for a second, "No, Sweetheart! A Quirk is...well, a Quirk is basically something that's a part of you! You've just been told that you were Quirkless your whole life, and...it's just a shock that you have one now! But that's never going to change how we treat you! You're our sweet little Goma, and you always will be!"
"...Okay..." Goma just sat there, still a little confused.
"Don't worry, Goma, we'll figure this all out. We just need an appointment from this doctor you went to who said that you were Quirkless."
Goma didn't reply as he sat there looking at his naked foot...
To be perfectly honest, Goma was a little confused, maybe even...scared a bit? How would he be treated now that he has a Quirk? His mother said that he and his father and big brother would always treat him the same, but what about other people? Some of these people back at his father's Hero Agency treated him nicely when they realized he was Quirkless. Would that change? What about kids his age? Would they treat him differently now they had a Quirk...do people act differently now that they have a Quirk?
His thoughts went back to that Izuku kid when he said that he didn't have a Quirk...yet he was picked on by that jerk kid Bakugou...like he was picked on by those kids back at his old preschool...
Now that he has a Quirk...will he act like a different person?
...
...No. I won't act like a jerk. I'll still act like me. If anything, I made a friend...
However, another thought came into his mind.
...But will he want to hang out with me after I said I was Quirkless, but now I have one?
...Then another thought, a scary one, came up to him.
Will...Izuku think I'm a jerk like that Bakugou kid?
...Goma knows what he has to do to keep his friendship with Izuku.
Yeah...I'll keep being me...the Quirkless Goma.
Both mother and son were silent as they drove all the way back...
Back at the Toyomitsu Home
6:00 PM
Sora and Taishiro came in at the nick of time. After quickly taking their shoes off and tossing them in the genkan, they both rushed inside their home, going over to their living room area to see Goma sitting on the couch, eating a plain hamburger (with ketchup) that was in his hands.
Goma looked in his father and brother's direction, swallowing his food as he smiled, "Hey Dad! Hey Big Bro!"
"Goma!" they both exclaimed.
Sora came up to him first, kneeling in front of his younger son and putting his hands on his shoulders as he looked at him in worry, "Goma! Son, we got the text from your mother! I-Is it really true!?"
"Huh? True?" Goma blinked, "Oh, you mean about the Quirk thing? Yeah, it's true," he nodded.
"Whoa! For real, Little Bro!?" Taishiro came up to his brother in a stunned state.
"Mm-hmm! Watch!" Goma then looped the inside of his mouth and pulled the side of his mouth to stretch it, making it really elongated, probably around a foot long.
The two men's eyes widened in absolute shock, their mouths dropped in surprise.
"...Dad..." Taishiro said after a three-second pause, "I...I think Goma has a Quirk now."
"Y-...Yes, I...I think I can safely say that with great assurance, Taishiro," Sora said, in awe at how his youngest son is pulling his mouth like that.
"Yah!" Goma let go of his mouth and it quickly retracted and snapped back into its shape, "I think my Quirk is like yours, right Dad?"
"...I...I, w-well, your Quir-"
"Sora!" said Fujina, who came into the living room.
"Fujina!" Sora stood up and went to his wife, "Honey, you said you saw him use his Quirk?"
"Well, yes, but he was just stretching his pinkie toe. That's how I found out," she informed them.
"Stretching his pinkie toe?" Taishiro raised his eyebrow at that.
"Well, we were at the park, and there was this woman who was looking for her son. Me and Goma were looking for the woman's son, and Goma-" Fujina glanced at Goma, who looked at his mother in confusion. She smiled at him and told his father, "Let me tell you something, Dear; your son basically found the boy all by himself and came back to us! I don't know how he did it, but he maneuvered the park and came back to us with the boy intact!"
"Wha-really?" Sora's eyes widened in surprise. He looked at Goma and asked him, "Is this true, Goma?"
Goma nodded with a smile, "Yeah! I found the boy, and his name is Izuku! He said he was Quirkless, and I told him he can be a Hero if he wants to, cause he really wants to be one!"
"Oh, well...that's a really nice thing you said to him, Goma," Taishiro said to his little brother with a smile.
"Um...yes, Goma, that was a very Heroic thing you did. I'm proud of you," Sora told him, really meaning what he said. However, he was still reeling over the Quirk thing, "Uh, but...how did you get your Quirk?"
"Oh! Well, when I asked Izuku what he had that made him Quirkless, he said he had an extra joint in his pinkie toe! So I took off my shoe to see if I had that, which...um, I don't think I did. But then, I started to stretch my toe! Which I guess it means I don't have an extra joint, and that I have a Quirk all along!" Goma told his account with a grin.
"Oh..." Sora looked at his youngest son in astonishment, "But...Goma, you didn't have a Quirk before. You have an appendix, which...means you shouldn't have one...I mean, I would think so, right?" he asked, directing his attention to his son and wife.
"Well...maybe it came in late?" Taishiro wondered.
"I don't know...usually the signs are more telling if one is Quirkless, even though the condition is rare," said Fujina, "If he had an appendix, then his body would react normally as a Quirkless individual would."
"But, he has a Quirk now," Sora stated.
"Yes, but..." Fujina looked stumped.
"Look, either way, I think we should take it into account that Goma has a Quirk now," Taishiro let it come to their attention, "I don't think it matters how he got it, this is a very special moment for him!"
Sora and Fujina turned to their youngest boy, while Goma was looking at the two of them with blinking puzzled eyes. Smiling at his youngest son, Sora couldn't help but feel even more proud of him than he already was. "You're right, Taishiro...we should treat this as a very important moment in Goma's life."
Goma looked at his father, a little confused, until he frowned, "You and Big Bro won't treat me differently now that I got a Quirk, will you?"
Taishiro and Sora looked surprised by that question.
"What? No, little guy, we won't treat you any differently," Taishiro assured his little brother. "What makes you say that?"
Goma looked at his brother and father curiously, almost as if he was studying them. "...It's just that when I was Quirkless, I was treated...normally, I guess."
Sora gazed at his younger son with a soft look, and understood what he meant, "Goma...you'll still be our little guy that we know and love. Just because you have a Quirk doesn't mean it changes who you are. You're who you are. With or without a Quirk."
The little boy looked at his father, silent as he heard him talk.
Placing a hand on top of Goma's head in a loving gesture, Sora just smiled and said, "We'll always see you as the great young man that you are, Goma. We'll always love you when you're Quirkless, and we'll always love you the same now that you have a Quirk," he paused for a moment, "I know that...some people can be mean when it comes to Quirkless people, but honestly, they don't know anything. You are a human being, and should be treated like one. But you'll also be treated as mine and your mother's son, and Taishiro's little brother. We're a family, Goma...families are not supposed to hate each other. We love you, Goma."
"..." Goma glanced down at his lap and the burger he had on his lap, "...I guess I just didn't want that Izuku kid to think I lied about being Quirkless...I just didn't want to turn into a jerk and be mean to him if I had a Quirk."
Sora just smiled softly at his son, "Goma...that's what makes you you."
Goma looked up at his father, puzzled.
"You're thinking about your new friend and thinking about his feelings...that's who you are, Goma. You're a caring person, you want to be friends with Izuku, and you know what's right." Sora patted his head with soft affection and let go of Goma's head, "You will never be a jerk to anyone. You're you. My son and Taishiro's younger brother, Goma Toyomitsu.
"...But...will he still be my friend even though I said I was Quirkless when I'm not?" Goma asked.
Fujina cuts in, "Goma. You said something to Izuku that I think really helped him today."
"Huh?" Goma looked at his mother, "What did I say?"
Smiling at his naivety, Fujina told him, "You told him he can be a Hero without a Quirk."
"...Oh. Well, yeah, but that's because I honestly think he can."
"Well, maybe Izuku didn't think he could because..." Fujina frowned at the thought, "He's been told that he couldn't throughout his life, probably."
"Huh? Really?" Goma thought about that, "...Whoever told Izuku that is stupid."
"Hey now, Goma, Izuku probably had someone close to them who said that to him," Taishiro spoke out.
"Really?" Goma blinked, "But who would say that to Izuku?"
It can't be that jerk Bakugou...
"Well...I don't really know," Fujina said, but her expression said otherwise, "But what's important is that you lifted up Izuku's spirits. You gave him hope, Goma. And I don't think Izuku is the type of child that thinks you were lying. He seems like a very nice boy."
"..." Goma looked down at his lap again in silence.
Fujina placed a hand on Goma's shoulder and told him, "Goma-Dear, no worries. I have his mother's number, so you can talk to him if you want?"
Looking up at his mother, Goma sat there, a hopeful look on his face, "...Yeah. I would like to talk to him."
Smiling at his answer, Fujina nodded, "Then I'll call Inko and let her get Izuku to talk to you."
She got up and went to get her phone.
Taishiro and Sora just gave him smiles, the former telling his little brother, "I'm really proud of you, Little Bro. I think you really will make great Hero potential."
"That's right," Sora nodded, "I think you would make an outstanding Hero, like your big brother."
"Aww, Dad, come on. You're the better Hero. I'm just a sidekick," Taishiro rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment.
"Well, I'm just proud of both of my boys either way," Sora said with a smile to each of his sons.
Goma couldn't help but...smile as well. He thought being a Hero was alright, but if making people happy is what being a Hero is about, as well as doing things for other people like looking for their kids, then he can get by with that. In fact, it made his dad, mom, and brother happy, and he loved to see them happy...
...Maybe he should think about this Hero profession. It kind of sounds interesting. Maybe fun, even!
I'm still a Pirate though...maybe I can be a Hero Pirate? Or...a Pirate Hero?
"Goma?" Fujina's voice came through as she entered the living room, "I got Inko on the phone. You can talk to Izuku once she gives him the phone."
"Oh," Goma snapped out of his thoughts, "Uh, okay."
Fujina gave her phone to Goma, and he put it up to his ear, "Hello?" he said on the phone's receiver.
"Hello?" the voice of Inko emerged from the phone, "Oh, hello little Goma! How are you, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Oh, I'm doing okay! Say, is Izuku there right now? I want to talk to him."
"Oh yes, of course! But, uh..." her voice got quiet all of a sudden, "It seems you just got your Quirk! From what your mother told me, she said that you thought you were Quirkless! Well, I...I just wanted to congratulate you on that, and...I can only just hope...oh, I'm sorry, I'll get Izuku in a moment! I just, well, I just want to say...that I really do appreciate what you said to my boy. About him being a...a Hero without a Quirk."
"Oh it's no problem! I really believe he can!" Goma said with a smile.
"...Y-Yes...th-thank you...thank you so much young man," Inko's voice sounded...wavy...like she was about to cry...
Goma blinked and asked, "Uh, Izuku's Mom? Are you okay?"
Fujina, Sora, and Taishiro also blinked and looked at each other in worry.
"Y-Yes! Yes, I'm alright! H-Here, Izuku is, uh...oh! Um, Izuku is right here! Thank you again!"
Goma could hear another little voice saying "Mom? Are you okay?", and that's when he heard Inko's voice saying that it was Goma on the phone. After a second, Izuku answered the phone, "Hello? Goma?"
Now Goma felt a little nervous, trying to find the right words, "Uh...hey, Izuku."
"Oh! Goma! Hey, you left pretty fast! I wanted to know what you did back there! That was really cool!"
"Huh?" Goma uttered in surprise, "You mean...you're not mad?"
"Huh? Mad? No way! I love Quirks! I want to know all about them! Yours looked really cool! What was it? Is it like your dad's? Is it a mutation Quirk or is it an emitter? Or is it a transformation Quirk?! Does it have to do with rubber, since your dad is Rubber Band? You got to tell me!"
"Uh...I mean, I don't know too much about it yet. I just got it."
"Whoa, really!? Yours came in late!?"
"I...guess so."
"Wow...then I can have a Quirk too if that's the case!"
"Huh? Are Quirks really a big deal?"
"What!? It's what everyone has! They can use it to help people! Quirks are what make you who you are!"
Raising a brow, Goma said, "But just cause you're Quirkless, doesn't mean you are not who you are."
"...Huh?"
"Yeah! You're a cool kid, even without a Quirk! And you also spoke out against that jerk who was bullying you!"
Sora and Fujina blinked at that information, while Taishiro looked a little irritable, knowing that kids are making fun of this Izuku because of his Quirklessness.
"U-Uh...well, he...a-are you alone right now?"
"Huh? Um, well, my mom, dad, and brother are staring at me."
"WHAT!? G-Go somewhere that's private! Like your room or something!"
"Uuuh..." Goma looked at his family and told them, "Sorry, I need to talk alone, I guess." He picked up his burger and gave it to Fujina, "Mom, could you put this in the oven? I'll be back, I need to talk to Izuku in private."
"Um...sure, Sweetheart," Fujina took the burger from Goma.
"Uh, we can give you some room, Little Bro, if you want?" Taishiro asked him.
"Um, yeah, you don't have to go to your room. We'll just leave, right?" Sora turned to his wife and oldest son.
"R-Right," Fujina nodded.
"Yeah," Taishiro also nodded.
They then got up and left the room, leaving Goma alone on the couch.
"Uh...okay, I'm alone now." Goma told Izuku on the phone.
"Um...okay then...I'm alone in my room, too. Uh...okay, look...the kid that was...um, causing trouble is...m-my friend, Kacchan."
"Huh?" Goma blinked at the bombshell. "Your friend? How is he..."
Huh? I...feel like there are people nearby...
Goma looked around the area, and when he saw someone shifting through a frame in the entryway(who looked a little bit like Taishiro), he said to Izuku on the phone. "Hold on, uh, I'm...going somewhere else to talk."
"Huh? Uh, okay..."
"Yeah," Goma got off the couch and rushed over to his room. Once he went into his room, he closed the door behind him and said to Izuku, "Okay, as I was saying, how is he your friend if he hurts you?"
"W-Well...he doesn't...mean it?"
"Doesn't mean it?" Goma frowned, "If he punched you, I think he would mean it."
"I-I mean, well..."
"And why did you call him Kacchan? He doesn't deserve a chan at the end, he's a big dumb meanie."
"Hey, Kacchan maybe...a little mean at times, but he really wants to be a Hero."
"...I still don't see it."
"Goma, Kacchan really wants to be a Hero! And...we promised..."
"Promised?" Raising an eyebrow, Goma asked him, "When did you promise that jerk? What was it about?"
"Well...back when we were really little. Maybe when we were three-years-old? Either way, we wanted to be Heroes when we grow up, and we promised that we can do it when...we have our Quirks..."
"...Oh. And you don't have a Quirk?"
"...Yeah..."
"..." Goma's frown deepened, "Wait, so he, like, called off the promise you guys made? All because you don't have a Quirk?"
"...Yeah, I...I guess in a way..."
For some reason (well, he knows exactly why, but it feels stronger than usual), he felt absolutely...infuriated over what he just heard.
"...Whoa. What an absolute turd."
"Huh!? No, I mean, he-"
"Listen, Izuku! He is not your friend! Friends don't make promises and back out on them! They either keep the promise or they try to make a new promise! He didn't respect your promise back then, so he is not a friend!"
"B-But...h-he's...the only friend I have."
"Izuku, you dummy, I'm your friend!"
"...Wh-Wha?"
"Yeah! I want to be your friend, Izuku! I feel like you need a real friend, not that Bakugou jerk!"
"...You...You really want to be my friend?"
"Of course I do! You're cool, and I heard how you stood up to that doofus Bakugou!"
"But...I...I don't have a Quirk."
"So what? You can be tough without a Quirk. Remember what I said, you can be a Hero without one!"
"I...I-I-I mean..."
"Izuku."
"...Yes?"
"Do you believe what I said?"
"...I..."
...It was silent for a moment on the other line...
"...I did."
Goma nodded in determination, "Then you can."
"...I...I..."
"Izuku! Say these words! I can be a Hero!"
"...I can...be a Hero."
"Yeah! Because my friend, Goma, told me I could! Say that as well!"
"...Be-...Because my...my friend...Goma, told me I could!"
"That's right! Never forget that, okay!?"
"...I...I won't..."
Goma grinned, "Good! Just keep thinking that, and you'll be a Hero in no time!"
"...C-...Can I ask you a question, Goma?"
"Hm? Yeah, sure, what is it?"
"...Are you...Do you really think I can be a Hero? I mean, you said you just now have a Quirk, and...well...the chances of me being a Hero without-"
"Izuku."
"...Y-Yes?"
"...Repeat after me: I can be a Hero! Because my friend, Goma, told me I could! Say that five times!"
"...I...I can be a Hero...Because my friend, Goma...told me I could..."
"Again!"
"I...I can be a Hero...Because my friend, Goma told me I could!"
"Again!"
"I...I can be a Hero! Because...Because my friend, Goma, told me I could!"
"Again!"
"I can be a Hero! Because my friend, Goma, told me I could!"
"One more time!"
"I CAN BE A HERO! BECAUSE MY FRIEND, GOMA, TOLD ME I COULD!"
"Yeah! That's the spirit!" Goma cheered.
"YEAH! I CAN!"
"Yeah! You CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"YOU CAN!"
"I CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
"WE CAN!"
WE CAN!
After being checked on by their parents after their hollering match of 'we cans', both boys talked some more, and talked about their favorite shows, games, and other boy stuff their age.
When it was time to hang up (Fujina was patient, but she really wanted her phone back), Goma asked Izuku if they could hang out sometime. Izuku liked that, and planned a get-together at Izuku's apartment on Saturday, since this was a Thursday. After checking with Izuku's mom, and Goma's parents, they agreed to the day.
The day went by, and Goma was happy to make a friend in Izuku. Sora and Fujina couldn't help but feel happy for their son, as well as Taishiro feeling happy for his little brother, on getting a Quirk and a new friend.
When Goma went to be tucked in bed by Fujina and Sora(Taishiro gave him a big hug and told him goodnight), the latter said to his son with a smile, "We're really proud of you today, Goma."
"Indeed we are," Fujina nodded with a soft smile as well.
"Thanks," Goma said with a grin. "And you know...maybe I want to be a Hero when I grow up."
Sora's eyes widened, as well as Fujina's.
"You do?" Sora asked him in surprise.
"Yeah! That way, I can help people, and be with my new friend, Izuku! We promised each other that we can be Heroes!"
"Oh...you did, did you?" Fujina asked with a blink, looking at her husband, while Sora looked at his wife with the same expression.
"Well..." Sora turned his attention to his son, "If you want to be a Hero, then...I think we can fully support that? Uh, right, Honey?" he asked Fujina.
Fujina smiled, "Yes. I think we can," she turned her attention to Goma, "And I think you would make a wonderful Hero, Goma-Dear."
"Shishishi! Thanks!" Goma said to them with a big grin.
Sora smiled down at his son. "Yeah...you certainly would be a great Hero when you grow up, son."
Now smiling big, Goma replied, "Thanks, Dad!" he yawned, "Hooo...okay, I'm tired. Night, Mom, night, Dad."
Chuckling at Goma, Sora ruffled Goma's hair while Fujina kissed him on the forehead.
"Goodnight, Goma," Sora said with a warm smile.
"Goodnight, Sweetheart," Fujina also smiled warmly at her son.
They then exited his room, closing the door and letting the nightlight be on.
Goma slept the night away...
I like that Izuku kid. He's a good guy.
Shishishi! And friends are always the best!
Hmm...maybe I can teach him how to fight. That would be cool!
Also...I like this kid. He doesn't abandon a friend…kind of like me! Shishishi!
I think I chose the right person.
Hope he can use my Gum Gum Fruit really well!
Until then, ...*yaaawn*...I'm a little sleepy too...
Night night, little Goma kid...
