Chapter 10
Rukia sat on her bed, the dim light of her desk lamp casting a soft glow over the journal she had taken from the cave. She sighed heavily, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face as her eyes scanned the words.
After breakfast, the dorm had grown eerily quiet. Everyone had said their goodbyes, stepping through their portals to visit their dimensions. Even Ichigo had left, though not before telling her, in his usual brusque yet warm way, to call him if she needed anything. She had considered going to the library to continue her research but ultimately decided against it, opting instead to delve into the journal's mysteries from the comfort of her room.
The entries fascinated her. They spoke of ancient sea creatures—some benevolent, others terrifying. Her mind drifted as she imagined these beings gliding through deep, uncharted waters. She was so lost in thought that the sudden knock on the front door made her jump. Heart pounding, she set the journal aside and took a deep breath before heading to the door.
When she opened it, she was greeted by a surprising sight—her sister, Hisana, flanked by her two roommates, Yui and Nozomi. They all wore their combat outfits, which struck Rukia as odd.
Yui's ensemble shimmered with elegance, a white and golden dress that ended just above her knees, radiating an angelic glow. Nozomi's outfit, in contrast, was sleek and functional—a pair of blue leggings and a tight, wave-patterned shirt that seemed to ripple as she moved. Hisana's dress had changed since Rukia last saw it. This version was shorter, just brushing her knees, and its vibrant blues, purples, and blacks seemed to shift like the night sky. Their hair was down, flowing freely, giving them an almost ethereal appearance.
Hisana grinned and enveloped Rukia in a tight hug. "Hey, Sis! Where are your roommates? And where's Ichigo?"
Rukia returned the hug, smiling as she pulled back. "Visiting their dimensions," she explained.
Hisana nodded, her expression thoughtful. She turned to Yui and Nozomi with a playful smile. "So, are you busy?"
Rukia hesitated before shaking her head. "Not really."
Hisana clapped her hands together. "Perfect! We're going to this realm called... umm... Yui, what's it called again?"
"The Bazaar Dimension!" Yui chimed in, her enthusiasm evident. "I need to get a dress for Friday."
Rukia blinked, confused. "Friday? Next weekend?"
Nozomi nodded, crossing her arms. "Yeah, after exams. Instead of going to other realms, the school throws a big party to celebrate. It's a tradition. Yui here wants the most extravagant dress she can find, as usual."
Yui scoffed, placing a hand on her hip. "Excuse me for having standards. Besides, you must join us. I'll pay for your dress, Rukia."
"And I can help too," Nozomi added with a grin.
Rukia's heart warmed. She was touched by their generosity but even more by how easily her sister had made such close friends. "Thanks, guys. But, um... why are you all in combat outfits?"
Hisana shrugged with a playful smirk. "Because they're cute."
Unable to argue, Rukia chuckled and headed back to her room to change. She swapped her usual combat attire for a pair of blue jeans and a purple shirt featuring her favorite bunny character, Chappie. Grabbing her bag with her keys and wallet, she rejoined the group, who were waiting with expectant smiles.
"Ready?" Hisana asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Rukia nodded, and with a snap of Yui's fingers, she conjured a light portal. Its edges shimmered like gold, rippling like sunlight on water. Holding hands, the group stepped through together.
The moment Rukia emerged from the portal, her breath caught. The Bazaar Dimension was breathtaking—a stark contrast to the Nexus dimension. The streets were paved with gleaming stones that sparkled under a sky painted in hues of soft lavender and amber. Ornate storefronts lined the streets, their windows displaying elegant clothing, shimmering jewels, and artifacts that seemed to hum with power. The air carried the enticing aroma of spiced pastries and exotic flowers, mingling with the faint hum of distant music.
"Whoa..." Rukia whispered, feeling simultaneously enchanted and intimidated by the opulence around her.
Yui, unfazed, led the way, her steps confident. "This place is amazing, right? Come on, we have a lot to see!"
As they weaved through the crowd, Rukia couldn't help but notice the gazes they drew—especially from a group of men lounging near a fountain.
"Woo, my goodness! Twins and two other fine girls," one of them called out, his voice dripping with mockery.
Rukia instinctively tensed, inching closer to her sister. Hisana squeezed her hand reassuringly, her expression calm but firm as they continued walking.
"Hey! We're talking to you!" another man shouted, his tone more aggressive.
Rukia's heart raced as the men began to follow. Their jeers grew louder, and she crouched slightly, gripping Hisana's hand tightly. Just as they reached a boutique called Women's Happiness, Hisana stopped abruptly and turned to face the men.
"No, we're good," she said, her tone deceptively sweet. "But you guys seem a little hot. Maybe you should cool down."
Before the men could respond, Hisana raised her hand. A burst of icy wind surged forward, freezing two of them into statues. The remaining three roared in anger and charged, but Nozomi and Yui stepped up, their expressions fierce.
Nozomi flicked her hand, and one man dropped to his knees, clutching his head as though fighting against invisible chains. Yui moved her hands gracefully, summoning a gust of wind so cold that it sent the other two men flying backward.
Rukia watched in awe, her envy flickering as she wished she could join them. Just as one of the men retaliated with a fiery blast, Hisana shielded her, pulling her close.
The heat never came. When Rukia opened her eyes, three figures stood between them and the attackers. She recognized Byakuya instantly, his elegant form exuding quiet power. Beside him were two others—a man with light purple hair and a scarred face with a mask on, and another with messy brown hair and calm gray eyes.
The attackers scattered, their confidence extinguished. The men turned to the group, each assessing the girls carefully. The scarred man stepped forward first, bowing slightly.
"Hello, I'm Hanza Nukui," he introduced himself with a calm yet commanding presence.
The brown-haired man offered a kind smile. "And I'm Shu Kannogi. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Byakuya remained silent but offered a slight nod, his gaze lingering on Rukia, who felt both reassured and overwhelmed.
Hisana pouted. "We were fine. We had it."
Yui nodded, crossing her arms. "Yeah, we didn't need help. My Harvest Shield would've protected us."
Nozomi sighed dramatically. "Well, I think I had everything under control. I just need to practice controlling more than one person with my Blood Technique."
Hanza snorted, arms folded. "Nozomi, a thank you would be nice."
Nozomi rolled her eyes but smirked. "Fine. Thanks, Hanza, my strong, handsome guardian."
Hanza grinned under his mask. "No problem, my little water flower."
Nearby, Yui threw her arms around Shu, showering him with gratitude. Shu gave a bright smile and bowed, his expression warm and earnest. Hisana, meanwhile, gave a sly grin and bumped playfully into Byakuya.
"Thanks, Bya," she teased.
Rukia watched her sister and friends interact with their guardians. It was night and day compared to how she and her roommates interacted with theirs. The camaraderie between the group made her feel a pang of discomfort—an unfamiliar sensation of being on the outside looking in.
The group moved happily into the boutique, Yui practically dragging Shu behind her toward the racks of colorful dresses. Nozomi and Hanza wandered to a section filled with trendy party outfits, exchanging banter along the way. Rukia found herself trailing behind, her gaze lingering on Hisana and Byakuya. Their closeness felt almost suffocating, and for the first time, Rukia felt out of place around her sister. She tried to shake the feeling, but it clung to her like an unwelcome shadow. She found herself missing Ichigo.
Noticing her sister's distant expression, Hisana grabbed Rukia's hand and smiled warmly. "So, how's everything been? How are your friends? And why on earth would Ichigo leave you behind?"
Rukia blinked, momentarily caught off guard. She explained that her friends were busy studying for exams and that Ichigo had returned to his dimension to check on... things. The others had seen it as the perfect opportunity to visit their own realms as well.
Hisana gave her a skeptical look but eventually nodded. "Guess what! I'm going to visit the Ice Realm. Byakuya, what's it called again?"
Byakuya, who had been silently following them, answered smoothly, his voice calm and precise. "You mentioned wanting to visit a realm frequented by Ice Women. I suggested the Frostveil Dominion."
"Right, Frostveil Dominion!" Hisana exclaimed. "I'm not telling Auntie about this, though. She's been so mysterious about our parents and who we are. Would you like to come? I'm going next weekend, on Saturday."
Rukia hesitated. Part of her wanted to say yes—to bond with her sister and learn more about their shared heritage. But another part of her feared being a third wheel, especially with the way Hisana and Byakuya interacted. She yearned to ask if there was something between them but held her tongue.
As they wandered the boutique, Hisana's eyes lit up when she spotted a short, off-the-shoulder black dress that practically screamed her name. She grabbed it excitedly, holding it up for Rukia to see.
"What do you think?" Hisana asked, her tone hopeful.
"It's beautiful," Rukia admitted, but her eyes widened when she saw the price tag. "Hisana, that's... really expensive."
Hisana sighed, shoulders slumping. "Yeah, you're right. I'll just put it back."
Rukia frowned, watching her sister reluctantly place the dress back on the rack. But before she could let go, Byakuya stepped forward and stopped her.
"If you want the dress, Hisana, you can have it," he said matter-of-factly.
Hisana squealed in delight and hugged him tightly. Rukia watched as a faint blush crept across Byakuya's face, though he said nothing. The sight only deepened her discomfort.
"Hey, sis," Rukia said suddenly, forcing a smile. "I'm not feeling well. Do you think your friends could make a portal so I can go back?"
Hisana's playful demeanor vanished in an instant. She hurried to her sister's side, her expression full of concern. "What's wrong? Do you need me to make you some of Auntie's famous gazpacho? Her cold soup is the best."
Rukia shook her head and hugged her sister. "Don't worry about me, Sis."
Hisana sighed, then snapped her fingers. A swirling portal of blue and purple light appeared before them. Rukia stared at it in awe—she hadn't known her sister could summon portals. She waved at Byakuya and gave Hisana one last hug before stepping through.
The portal deposited her in front of her dorm. Rukia stood there for a moment, the quiet day settling around her like a heavy blanket. She sighed, not wanting to return to her dorm room. Instead, she decided to snag a quick bite to eat before heading to the library. As she walked into the nearly empty building, the faint musty scent of old books greeted her. The stillness was comforting yet eerie. She wandered through the aisles, idly brushing her fingers over spines of ancient tomes, hoping to stumble upon something interesting.
As she turned a corner, a familiar chill ran up her spine. A warm smile spread across her face when she saw Hanataro floating toward her, his usual cheerful demeanor lighting up the room.
"Hi, Rukia! How have you been?"
Rukia smiled back. "I'm good. How are you?"
Hanataro spun in mid-air, his ethereal form glowing faintly. "Bored, as always. No one ever comes here, so I don't have much to do. Have you read the books I gave you?"
Rukia hesitated, scratching the back of her neck. "A little... but not really." She decided to change the subject quickly. "Hey, can I ask you something?"
"Of course! Ask away."
"Do all creatures come to this school?"
Hanataro nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, yes! Karakura College has been open to all creatures—good and evil—for centuries, even before the war. Students from every dimension have come here to learn. It's why the library is so vast. Starting at sixteen was the enrollment age back then, and it's remained the same."
Rukia's curiosity grew. "So… Can we look up students from before?"
Hanataro's translucent form shimmered with excitement. "We can! But to access student records, I'll need a little more information. Do you know their full names, faces, or voices?"
"I only know their first names. I'd recognize their voices, though," Rukia admitted.
Hanataro's eyes gleamed mischievously as he floated higher. "Close enough! Come with me."
Before she could respond, Hanataro reached out, his cold hand brushing hers. Instantly, a strange sensation washed over her, making her skin tingle. She looked down in shock, realizing her body had become semi-transparent.
"W-what's happening?" Rukia stammered, watching as Hanataro pulled her deeper into the library.
"Don't worry," he reassured her. "I'm taking you to the librarian room—a restricted area where I store records of every student who's ever walked these halls. Only I and the professors can access it, but I'm making an exception for you."
Rukia followed, her awe growing as they passed through walls of bookshelves, her body phasing effortlessly through solid objects. Finally, they entered a massive, dimly lit chamber. The air hummed with magic as books floated in mid-air, their spines rearranging themselves with a life of their own.
"Welcome to the librarian room," Hanataro announced proudly. "This is where I keep the records. Now, tell me the names."
Rukia glanced around, marveling at the infinite shelves stretching beyond sight. "Loly, Menloly, and Luppi," she said hesitantly.
Hanataro nodded, raising his hands. The room sprang to life as books began flipping open, their pages glowing with energy. A shimmering projection of figures appeared, their voices overlapping in chaotic chatter.
"Speak!" Hanataro commanded, his voice echoing through the chamber.
Rukia listened carefully, her ears straining to pick out the familiar tones. One by one, she pointed at the voices she recognized. Hanataro waved his hand, and the projections shifted to show the three figures in detail.
"These are the ones you're looking for," Hanataro said. "Loly, Menloly, and Luppi Duskveil. They're mischievous sprites—siblings, in fact. During their time here, they caused nothing but trouble. Loly and Menloly were so chaotic they refused to have individual guardians. Luppi had to act as their shared guardian instead."
Hanataro pointed to the first projection. "Loly Duskveil is the eldest. She's the one with the black pigtails."
Rukia examined the image: Loly's pigtails cascaded down her back, her pink eyes sharp with mischief. Her slender figure leaned impatiently toward the camera, her scowl evident.
"Menloly Duskveil is the youngest. Her short blonde hair is unmistakable."
Rukia noted the shy yet defiant tilt of Menloly's head in her image. She seemed the least intimidating of the three, but there was a glint of rebellion in her lilac eyes.
"Finally, Luppi Duskveil, the middle sibling," Hanataro continued. "He's the one with unevenly cut black hair and lavender eyes. He has a knack for acting like a ringleader."
Rukia scrutinized Luppi's picture. Despite his elegant features, his menacing grin hinted at his chaotic nature. In the image, he was taunting the camera, his words frozen mid-sentence: "Hurry up before I start wrinkling!"
Rukia felt a chill as she studied the projections. They didn't look dangerous, but their aura of mischief was palpable.
"They caused so much trouble here," Hanataro added.
Rukia asked for pictures of the siblings, her curiosity burning brighter than ever. Hanataro nodded, his translucent form glowing faintly as he conjured three shimmering images. The projections hovered before her, each as vivid as if they were alive.
"These should do," he said, handing her physical copies of the images.
Rukia tucked them away carefully. Hanataro tilted his head, his ghostly features filled with curiosity.
"So, why did you need to know about them?"
Rukia hesitated before letting out a soft sigh. "Hanataro… can I trust you?"
His wide eyes filled with sincerity, and he gave her a firm nod. "Absolutely."
Taking a deep breath, Rukia began recounting everything she and her roommates had discovered. She described the siblings sneaking into the dorms the night Hanataro had put her in a trance, their motives still unclear. She told him about Bazz-B as well and how he was searching the rooms for the War Against Evil book. Hanataro listened intently, his spectral form flickering slightly as he concentrated.
When she finished, he waved his hand, and a new image materialized. Rukia's eyes widened as she saw a sharp-featured boy with a fierce scowl. His spiky red hair framed his face, and his piercing gaze seemed to burn even in the picture.
"This is him," Hanataro said. "Bazz-B—real name Bazzard Black. He's a Flame Wyvern and guardian to Bambietta. A first-year student, just turned seventeen. He's known for causing trouble, but I'd advise caution, Rukia. As an Ice Woman, you're his natural opposite. He may have his own agenda, and it's best you keep your distance."
Rukia studied the image, her expression unreadable. "So… you can look up anyone and tell what they are?"
Hanataro's glow dimmed slightly, as if sensing where she was headed. He shook his head firmly. "Rukia, respect your roommates' and guardians' privacy. I'm showing you this because it's important, but they'll share their truths when they're ready. Trust them."
Though disappointed, Rukia nodded in understanding. "Thank you, Hanataro."
He offered a small, kind smile. "If you ever want to know more about your parents… I can point you in the right direction."
Rukia froze, her breath catching. "You—you know about them?"
Hanataro's form shimmered softly as he nodded. "Go to the Frost Realm and seek out the Glacierheart Expanse. Look for the name Fuyumi Sode no—your mother. As for your father, visit the main realm of the Fae and search for Takeru Kurokawa."
Rukia's eyes widened, tears welling as her emotions overwhelmed her. Her parents' names… names she had never heard before. Her aunt had never spoken of them or shown her and Hisana any pictures. The realization hit her like a wave, and she bit her lip to stop herself from sobbing.
"Thank you…" she whispered, her voice trembling.
She longed to hug him, even though he was a ghost. Sensing her emotions, Hanataro gently reached out and grasped her hand, pulling her into a spectral embrace. Though his form was faint, the gesture was warm, comforting. Rukia closed her eyes, savoring the moment as she hugged him back.
When their conversation ended, Hanataro ushered her toward the exit. "Exams are tomorrow," he reminded her. "You should rest. If you need anything else, you know where to find me."
Rukia smiled, wiping her tears. "Thank you, Hanataro. For everything."
Rukia thanked Hanataro again as he sent her off, reminding her to prepare for tomorrow's exams. As she stepped out of the library, the cool night air greeted her. To her surprise, Ichigo was leaning casually against a nearby column, his hands tucked into his pockets and a faint smirk on his face.
"Took you long enough," he said, straightening as she approached.
Rukia gave him a small smile. "What are you doing here? I thought you were still in your dimension."
Ichigo shrugged. "We finished up early. Renji got what we needed."
"And what exactly were you doing?" Rukia asked, curious but wary.
Ichigo hesitated for a beat, his expression unreadable. "Let's just say we were digging into some stuff from the Dragon Kingdom. Nothing you'd be interested in."
Rukia narrowed her eyes, unconvinced. "You make it sound like I wouldn't understand."
"It's not that," Ichigo said quickly, his smirk softening into something more thoughtful. "It's just... complicated."
Rukia bit back her frustration. Ichigo had always been guarded, but his reluctance to share anything about his dimension—or himself—was beginning to grate on her. Still, she let it go, deciding to focus on the present.
"So, did you miss me?" Ichigo asked, his tone light and teasing.
Rukia felt her cheeks flush, but she kept her composure. "It was boring without you constantly being around," she retorted with a small smirk of her own.
Ichigo chuckled, his laughter cutting through the stillness of the night. "Fair enough." He glanced at the nearby path. "C'mon, I'll walk you back."
The two fell into step, the quiet between them surprisingly comfortable. Rukia occasionally stole glances at Ichigo, wondering what secrets he was keeping and why he always seemed so hesitant to let her in.
When they reached the dorm, Ichigo stopped at the entrance, his hands back in his pockets. "Good luck with your exams tomorrow," he said with an easy smile.
"You too," Rukia replied, her voice softer than usual.
Ichigo lingered for a moment, as if he wanted to say more, but then he turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows.
Inside, the apartment was silent. Rukia peeked into her roommates' rooms and found them fast asleep. Smiling to herself, she decided to take a long, cold shower to unwind. As she let the water wash over her, her thoughts wandered back to Hanataro's revelations—and the weight of hearing her parents' names for the first time.
Wrapped in a blanket of exhaustion and anticipation for the day ahead, Rukia climbed into bed. Her last thoughts before sleep claimed her were of the Frost Realm, the Glacierheart Expanse, and knowing about her mother and who she was.
