Chapter 34: Arriving at the Hospital

Callie pulled into the Taylor Merks Hospital's parking lot within twenty minutes. She parked in a space near the entrance before turning off the engine. She grabbed her purse to lay it in her lap. Phoebe looked at the top of the hospital. She raised her eyebrows. Podcast peered over her shoulder after taking off his seatbelt and leaning forward.

"Talk about a big hospital," Phoebe said in amazement.

"Yep. The rooftop is a great place for falcons to perch," Callie added with a smile.

"You don't want to be a bird flying around when a falcon dive-bombs and grabs you with its talons," Podcast said and chuckled.

Callie placed her hand on the back of her neck. "It is a well-known fact that falcons can fly at two hundred miles per hour."

Phoebe exhaled. "That is faster than most vehicles are. Falcons just…"

As Phoebe continued talking, the Uber driver pulled into the lot and parked in a space three rows down from the van. Dino and Mina unbuckled their seatbelts and grabbed their backpacks from the floor. He looked over his shoulder at them, his brow furrowing.

"Thank you for bringing us here," Dino said and pulled a five-dollar bill from his pocket. He handed it to the driver. "Here's your tip."

"Thank you," the driver said, a smile crossing his lips. "Have a good day."

"You too. Be careful. There are many crazy drivers on the road," Mina pointed out honestly.

"I know," the driver agreed. "Enjoy your time here."

Dino and Mina exited the car. They placed their backpacks over their shoulders as the driver drove away. They spotted the van and narrowed their eyes at it. He ran his tongue all over the inside of his mouth.

"I bet that van belongs to one of Callie's friends. She used it to come here with Phoebe," Dino suggested while pointing his finger at the van.

"We won't know until they come out of it," Mina commented, her arms crossing. "They can't stay in there forever. They have to come out at some point.

"You're right. We need to find a place to hide and watch them carefully," Dino pointed out and cleared his throat.

Mina looked around, her tongue clicking. She spotted a tree in on the right side of the lot. She laughed in delight and tapped her boyfriend's shoulder. She pointed her finger at it.

"That tree is perfect for us to hide behind. Its trunk is very large," Mina said, clapping multiple times.

"You are right," Dino said, his voice showing excitement. "You are a genius, Mina."

She held up her hands. "Aren't I always?"

He nodded in agreement. "Yep. We better hide before they see us."

Dino and Mina rushed behind the tree. They took their backpacks off their backs to lay them on the ground. They unzipped them, reaching into them and puling out their long-range cameras. They placed their backs against the tree. They peered around it. Phoebe drew a circle with her finger in midair.

"That's why falcons will always be the coolest raptors," Phoebe said with pride.

"That's nice, Pheebs," Callie said and made a funny noise. "Now, let's get this ultrasound done."

"Yeah," Podcast. "Let's go on the double."

Callie and Phoebe unbuckled their seatbelts. Callie got out, a contented sigh leaving her mouth as she put her purse over her shoulder. Podcast helped Phoebe out carefully. They came around to Callie and proceeded to head for the entrance. Dino and Mina came out a little more and pointed their cameras at them. They snapped two pictures each. They formed big smirks on their faces.

"They have no idea we just took some pictures of them," Dino said and snickered under his breath.

"You said it. They are totally clueless!" Mina said delightfully.

"Yeah," Dino agreed while nodding rapidly. He became still when the trio stopped in their tracks. "Uh-oh. We better get back behind the tree."

She cringed. "I agree."

He motioned with his head toward the back of tree. "Let's go."

Dino and Mina rushed back behind the tree. Callie, Phoebe, and Podcast looked over their shoulders. They could feel their hearts speeding up a bit. Their breathing got a little heavier.

"Is it just me, or could someone be watching us?" Phoebe wondered and swallowed hard.

"I don't know. If so, then I bet it is Dino and Mina," Callie said, her teeth clenching quite a bit.

"We better get inside before we see them," Podcast said, his hands curling into fists. "I don't think I will be able to stop myself from going over and screaming at them if I do."

"Me too," Phoebe said, looking at her mother.

"Okay. Let's go," Callie said, waving her hand toward herself.

The trio looked ahead and resumed heading for the entrance. Dino and Mina came out from behind the tree slowly. They pointed their cameras at them once they were all the way out. They took three pictures each. They adjusted their lenses before taking two more. They observed them heading inside.

"Whoo! That was fun," Dino whispered excitedly.

"It sure was," Mina said, nodding in a rapid manner. "Nearly getting caught makes my adrenaline go up quite a bit."

"The same goes for me with mine," Dino agreed.

"So, when do you think they will be out of the hospital?" Mina wondered, her eyes filled with much curiosity.

"I have no idea. One thing is clear. We cannot let them know we are spying on them," Dino said, seriousness showing in his voice.

"You are so right," Mina commented.

He ran his tongue all over the inside of his mouth. "Let's explore the grounds a little before we go inside and attempt to spy on them again."

She smirked. "Yeah."

Dino and Mina began walking across the lot after putting their cameras in their backpacks and zipping them closed. They hung their backpacks over their shoulders.

Callie, Podcast, and Phoebe walked into the mostly empty waiting room. They sighed in relief at seeing that. The room was large and had chairs set against all the walls. Next to the majority of them were end tables with magazines. Five chairs were across from Edward and Alice. Both sets had chairs set against them. The walls were painted blue. The trio approached the receptionist, who looked up.

"May I help you?" the receptionist asked.

"My name is Callie Spengler. This is my daughter, Phoebe Spengler. She is here to see Olivia Juleson for an ultrasound appointment. It's at nine-thirty," Callie responded with a smile.

"You look a bit young to be having a baby, young lady," the receptionist snapped as she looked at Phoebe. She turned to Podcast. "That must be your boyfriend. I bet he's not even the father."

"Watch your mouth, lady. I am the father of her child," Podcast snapped while pointing his finger at her.

"I brought her here to see her obstetrician. You need to back the hell off," Callie added.

"Okay," the receptionist said and held up her hands. She grabbed a pen and notepad with an exhale. "Could I see your health insurance card?"

"Yes," Callie said with a nod. She reached into her purse to pull out her wallet. She opened it to grab a rectangular-shaped white plastic card saying Lillis Health Insurance.' Its phone number was 332-445-0890. She handed it to her. "This is the health insurance company my and Gary's health care plan is under. It says co-pay isn't required."

"All right," the receptionist said while looking it over. She wrote down the information before handing it back to Phoebe's mother. She observed her putting it back in her wallet and in her purse. She typed in Phoebe's full name. She raised her eyebrows at what came up on the screen. "It says here you had an ultrasound done last month."

"That's right," Phoebe replied and rubbed her chin.

"It may take a while before Dr. Juleson comes to see you," the receptionist pointed out.

"That's fine," Callie commented.

"We can wait," Podcast added and cleared his throat.

"You are having a girl," the receptionist said and smirked. "I am glad you are. Boys are such trouble."

Phoebe curled her hands into fists as an angry expression formed on her face. She took deep breaths, trying to stay calm.

"You better watch your tone, lady. Not all boys are bad. Not all girls are good. You probably treated every guy you dated like trash," Phoebe said fiercely.

"I did that with some of my boyfriends. So what?" the receptionist responded and held out her hands. "They deserved it."

"They probably didn't. You will never be able to keep a man with that attitude," Callie warned sternly.

Phoebe snickered. "You better pop that pimple on your forehead."

Phoebe smirked. "It looks about ready to burst."

Callie, Phoebe, and Podcast walked away as the receptionist hissed while rubbing the pimple. They went over to chairs located next to the door leading into the hallway to seat themselves. Callie laid her purse on the floor. She crossed her left leg over her right. Phoebe looked toward the receptionist.

"Talk about a really rude woman," Phoebe whispered irritatingly.

"Don't worry, honey. We won't have to deal with her after this," Callie responded in much relief. "I am sure she got dumped recently.

Podcast propped his head up with his elbow on the arm. "I think you're right."

"I have a feeling she will marry and divorce several times," Phoebe said honestly. "That is if any man wants her."

"Love is blind. That's for sure," Podcast said and gazed at his girlfriend.

"Yep, yep, yep," Phoebe said with a giggle.

"Sure thing, Ducky," Podcast said while twirling a strand of hair around his finger.

Phoebe tried to hold back a giggle, but she couldn't help herself. "Just don't pull my hair out."

"I won't," Podcast whispered lovingly. He planted a kiss to her forehead. He pulled back to look at her. "I'm glad to be here with you."

"I'm glad you're here with me," Phoebe said.

Callie waved her hand. "Hey, what am I, chopped liver?"

"Don't worry, Mom," Phoebe responded and turned to her. "I didn't forget you."

"Good," Callie said and formed a big smirk on her face. "If you did, I would have done this!"

Callie gave Phoebe a noogie. She laughed at her swatting her fist aside and got a pinch to the nose from her. She pointed her finger in her face. She moved it in all directions. Phoebe mimicked her movements with her head. She pretended to get dizzy and leaned her head back. She brought it forward with a laugh.

"I can't believe this is my final ultrasound. It feels like only yesterday when I had my first one," Phoebe said, her voice showing amazement.

"I know, right?" Callie asked with raised eyebrows. "Gabrielle was so tiny when we first saw her. Now, she is just about ready to come into the world.

"We were happily preparing for her arrival until that bastard and his bitchy girlfriend showed up," Phoebe grumbled and rolled her eyes. She grabbed a handful of hair. "Who do Dino and Mina think they are? They had no right to be rude to us at Hobbie's Place."

"People like that couple are destined for loneliness," Callie said bluntly.

"Who's to say Mina won't cheat on Dino?" Podcast wondered, a smile crossing his lips.

"It'd be the perfect karma for him cheating on me with all those women. I will feel no sympathy for him if that happens," Callie commented, wiggling her eyebrows.

"He had the gall to blame you for his unfaithfulness. He claimed your unwillingness to have sex with you led to it," Phoebe said, scoffing angrily. "He made the decision to cheat. You had nothing to do with it."

"Phoebe is right. Nobody pointed a gun at him and told him to cheat on you or else," Podcast added.

"That is true," Callie agreed with a slow nod. "I can't help but wonder if he has cheated on Mina."

"That is a thought. Some people cheat once and never do it again. Some people cheat over and over again," Phoebe pointed out truthfully.

"One thing is clear. Dino has never been a good guy. It took me a while to see that. Fool me once. Shame on you. Fool me twice. Shame on me," Callie explained.

"Yep," Phoebe responded and patted her mother's back. She started talking about switching Gabrielle's cradle for a crib when she turned four months old.
