First Glimpses – 4th Month of Pregnancy

Kate stood at her kitchen counter, staring blankly at the mug in her hands. Her tea was cold now, untouched for over an hour as she tried to mentally prepare for her prenatal appointment. The weight of the unknown pressed heavily on her, and despite her best efforts, her nerves were getting the better of her.

Castle, perched on the barstool at her counter, had been watching her pace in silence for several minutes. He finally cleared his throat, breaking the tension. "You know, this reminds me of our case with the steampunk time-travel guy," he said, leaning forward. "You remember? The one who acted like he was from the Victorian era but got shot with a 200-year-old bullet?"

Kate paused mid-step, her brows furrowing as she looked over at him. "Yeah, I remember. What's your point?"

Castle grinned. "That case was weird, Beckett. Like, completely out of left field. But you—cool, calm, badass Beckett—you handled it like it was just another Tuesday. You took something totally unpredictable and made it manageable. This?" He gestured vaguely toward her stomach. "This is another weird, unpredictable thing, but you'll handle it just the same."

Kate crossed her arms, leaning against the counter. "You're seriously comparing a murder investigation involving a 200-year-old gun to my pregnancy?"

"A little," he admitted, shrugging. "Because both are new territory, and both are kind of terrifying. But you've got this, Beckett. And I've got your back, just like always."

Kate huffed, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly despite herself. "Thanks, Castle."

He smiled, his tone lightening. "So, how about I come with you to your appointment? Moral support. I promise to behave... mostly."

Kate hesitated. The idea was strangely comforting. "You'd really want to sit through an OB appointment?"

"For you? Absolutely," he said, grinning. "Plus, I'm curious to see if baby Beckett is as badass as their mom."

She rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a small laugh. "Fine. You can come."

At the clinic, Kate filled out the usual forms while Castle sat beside her, his knee bouncing with restless energy. When she reached the line for "Emergency Contact," she froze for a moment before glancing at him.

"Castle," she said quietly, "would you mind if I put your name down here?"

His face softened, and he nodded immediately. "Of course. You can always count on me."

Her chest tightened, and she offered a small, grateful smile before finishing the form.

Moments later, the nurse called her name, and Castle followed her to the exam room.

As they waited for the doctor, Castle looked around the room, his usual curiosity taking over. "So, is there a test I need to pass to be the baby's godfather?"

Kate smirked, shaking her head. "I don't think there's a test. You're probably a shoo-in."

"Good," he said, leaning back in his chair with a satisfied grin. "Because I've got years of embarrassing childhood stories to tell, and Alexis is tired of hearing them."

Before Kate could respond, the door opened, and Dr. Patel entered. Her warm smile put Kate somewhat at ease.

"Good morning, Detective Beckett," she greeted. "And you must be Mr. Castle?"

Castle stood, offering his hand. "Guilty as charged."

Dr. Patel chuckled before taking a seat. "Alright, let's start with your bloodwork results. I'm happy to report that everything came back perfectly normal. No genetic concerns or abnormalities."

Kate let out a shaky breath, the tension in her shoulders easing. "Thank you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sensing her relief, Castle reached out and took her hand without a second thought. She didn't pull away, her grip tightening around his as she blinked back tears of gratitude.

"And now," Dr. Patel continued, "let's look at the baby. We should be able to determine the gender today if you're interested."

Kate's eyes widened, and she turned to Castle, her voice trembling. "Do you want to know?"

Castle grinned. "I don't know if I can stand not knowing, but it's up to you."

Kate smiled and turned back to Dr. Patel, "Yes, we want to know the gender."

As the doctor began the ultrasound, the grainy image appeared on the screen, and the sound of the baby's heartbeat filled the room. Kate's breath hitched, her free hand flying to her mouth as tears spilled down her cheeks.

"There's your baby," Dr. Patel said, smiling. "Strong and healthy. And... it's a boy."

"A boy?" Kate whispered, her voice breaking with emotion.

Castle's face lit up, his grin wide and unrestrained. "A boy," he echoed, his tone filled with wonder.

Kate turned to him, her tears flowing freely as she laughed softly. "Castle, it's a boy."

Unable to contain his joy, Castle leaned over and kissed her temple. "He's going to be amazing, Kate. Just like his mom."

Kate's heart swelled at his words, and before she could overthink it, she turned her head and kissed him. It was soft and fleeting but full of gratitude and something deeper she couldn't quite name yet.

When they pulled back, Castle's eyes searched hers, his voice barely above a whisper. "Kate..."

"Thank you," she said, cutting him off gently. "For being here. For everything."

"Always," he replied, his voice steady and meaningful.

As they left the clinic, Castle stopped her just outside the door. "So, Beckett," he said, his tone teasing but serious expression, "how about we celebrate? Let me take you on a real date."

Kate blinked, startled by the suggestion. "A date?" She hesitated, a small frown creasing her brow. "Castle, you don't have to do that. I mean, I'm... I'm a little—"

"Pregnant?" he finished for her, his grin softening into something sincere. "I know. And I still want to. Unless you're saying, you don't want to go."

"It's not that," she said quickly, brushing a stray hair behind her ear. "It's just... you could date anyone you wanted. You don't need to deal with a crazy pregnant woman and everything that comes with that."

Castle stepped closer, his voice gentle but firm. "Kate, if you think for one second that this is about 'dealing' with something, you don't know me as well as I thought. I want to take you out because you're... you. Amazing, brilliant, badass you. Pregnant or not, you're still the person I can't stop thinking about."

Her lips parted, and for a moment, she just stared at him, her heart pounding. "You're ridiculous," she finally muttered, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"Maybe," he agreed, his grin returning. "But I'm your kind of ridiculous."

Kate shook her head, but the warmth in her chest was undeniable. "Okay, Castle. One date."

He beamed, and she couldn't help but laugh as he said, "I'll make it one to remember."

As they walked to the car, Kate glanced over at him, a soft smile lingering on her lips. For the first time in a long while, the future didn't seem daunting.
