Summary:
KITT is familiar with Christmas, for he has celebrated several with his now best friend Michael and everyone at FLAG, but is at a loss for what gift to buy for April Curtis, his new technician.
"Michael, May I ask you a question?" asked KITT as the pair drove toward Seattle, Washington - a routine check of an empty warehouse. The owner, a supporter of FLAG, wanted to use it as a storage facility for Christmas parade floats and ascertain that there were no squatters.
Michael looks at the voice modulator with its segmented lines on the Trans AM dashboard. "Sure, Buddy. Although you already asked one," he said, amused.
"I fail to see why you're amused, Michael. I'm serious!" KITT huffed.
"You're always serious, KITT," Michael said dryly. "Ok, Pal. What did you want to ask?"
"I'm having difficulty deciding what to get April for Christmas. With Bonnie, it was easy. She always liked the books I gave her. I already sent her a gift. It's a mystery-adventure book I sent by courier to MIT, but April is another matter. What should I get her?" the computer asked, uncertain. The left monitor on the dashboard has photos of jewelry, cologne, flowers, and chocolates.
Michael laughs at the photos. "I think you confused Valentine's Day gifts with Christmas," he smirked before patting the dashboard.
The monitor is now off.
"Really, Michael." KITT responds, annoyed. "Please. I need help."
"Ok, ok, sorry, Pal. Let's put our heads together and figure out what she likes."
KITT does not bother correcting Michael that he doesn't have a 'head.' They've been partners and best friends for over three years. The computer is familiar with Michael's unique English and colloquialism. "It won't be easy. I already compiled a list of what she doesn't like." He displays the list on the right monitor. It keeps scrolling downward until five seconds later, it stops.
"WOW!" April hates many things," Michael remarked as he checked the list. "Hey! Since when she doesn't like my sense of humor?"
"Michael, you're getting off track. I asked you for help with a Christmas gift for her." KITT reminded his very human driver.
"Well, there's one way of finding out, KITT. Observe closely," Michael suggested. "You already done a lot of observation to come up with the list. Concentrate on the small things like what she eats or does when she's not working, things like that."
"You mean spy on her?" KITT asked, shocked.
"Think of it this way. It'll be similar to what you do with me, but you won't keep your scanners peeled when she's asleep at night." He lightly taps the comlink with his right index finger. "Which I appreciate when I'm sleeping in a motel. Plot me the shortest route to the warehouse," he ordered, returning his attention to the assignment.
The assignment is completed hours later without a hitch. They watched the local Santa Claus parade and toured Seattle at night to see the Christmas lights before returning home.
The weeks pass by.
KITT watches April closely as she repairs his chassis, adds upgrades, and orders the nearest mechanic to give him a thorough car wash. He keeps his scanner running when she types her reports on the lab's computer, observes her mannerisms when talking with Michael, Devon, and other humans, and finally converses with her about topics other than work.
KITT believes he has the perfect gift for April and tells Michael two days before Christmas. "My gift is friendship, Michael. April and I are friends."
Michael smiles warmly. "Perfect, Buddy."
