CHAPTER 2

Renee cared for all the children like they were her own, and though she cherished each one, there was always a quiet ache deep in her heart—a yearning she could never quite put into words.

She had never thought it would be possible for her to bear a child of her own. The magic that flowed through her veins was old, wild, and untamed, but it was not the kind that nurtured life. For years, she had resigned herself to the idea that motherhood was a dream she would never experience.

But tonight, the night of the solstice, everything had changed.

Her heart swelled with a quiet wonder as she felt the magic stir within her, a force unlike any she had ever known as she push to bring her child into the world.

A soft, ethereal cry broke the stillness of the night.

Renee gasped, her breath catching in her throat. She looked quickly down at the hands of the maid who was helping her, her eyes wide with astonishment, her chest trembling with a fierce, inexplicable joy. There in the clearing, where she met Alice a few moons ago, the moonlight kissed the earth, and the small bundle lay nestled in a blanket of soft moss, wrapped in a glowing cocoon of magic. It pulsed with a warmth and light that felt like the heartbeat of the world itself.

Her heart soared as she stepped forward, her hands trembling as she reached for the child. The moment her fingers touched the bundle, the magic swirled around her like a warm breeze, enveloping her in its glow. The child's cry softened, and the tiny form in her arms shifted slightly, revealing the face of a perfect little one. Renee gazed down at the child—her child—her eyes brimming with unspeakable emotion. The infant's skin shimmered faintly with a soft, ethereal glow, and its tiny fingers curled instinctively around her thumb. Her eyes, wide and filled with wonder, sparkled like twin stars in the night sky. A child born of powerful magic, but one who was undeniably hers.

"I never thought I would have this," she whispered, her voice trembling with awe. "Never thought I would hold you in my arms my beautiful *Izabella."

The wind whispered through the trees, as if the forest itself was rejoicing with her. The stars above seemed to shine a little brighter, and even the flowers seemed to bloom in the child's presence. This little one was special she could feel the raw force of her magic. Renee smiled down at her precious one, her heart swelling with a fierce, protective love. The ache she had felt for so long was gone, replaced by a joy that was pure and boundless, filling her completely.

A few years passed, and Izabella grew up following Rennee everywhere she went. She loved helping her mother with the Christmas presents, and she took great pride and joy in seeing the happy faces of those who discovered the gifts she hid in their stockings.

She was as kind as her mother and wanted to do even more for the children. One of her wishes was to bring back Christmas for all. She longed to see the joy, kindness, and merriment that her mother had told her about in stories, but she didn't know how to accomplish that goal. Mortals seemed to have forgotten it and the true meaning behind it.
But while Izabella resembled Rennee in many ways, she also had a bit of a temper—something her mother did not possess.

So, on one Christmas's Eve she was delivering a present she made when she stopped mid-flight, her face turning a dangerous shade of red that Renee only witnessed when she was a baby and wasn't n feed quick enough to soothe her. Her brown hair turned silver white and the magic sizzle and crackled in the air around her as she flutters towards the offending table.

"Look mother!" She stomped over the table where was a display of dry flowers, fruits and branches of hawthorn trees, foxglove flowers, and groundsel. Izabella couldn't believe her eyes, her favorite plants all ripped from the nature, just laying there for the amusement of a mere mortal boy.

In the commotion they haven't realize about the boy siting dumbstruck in his tiny cot until he made a started sound making Izabella spun around and flutter toward him. Her delicate features were flushed with emotion, her tiny fists clenched at her sides as she glared at a human boy, no older than eight, who stood before her, still groggy from sleep.

"You did it!" she shrieked, her voice high-pitched with outrage. "You've ruined everything!"

The boy, still rubbing his eyes, blinked in confusion. "What are you talking about? Are you another dream?"

"My flowers! My trees! The ones you cut down!" Izabella's wings buzzed angrily, sending sparks flying from the tips. She darted around the boy in a blur of motion, her words sharp and cutting. "Those were my favorites. They were sacred to us, and you destroyed them for no reason at all!"

The boy looked around his room, noticing the scattered items he has in his worktable. He bit his lip, a mix of guilt and curiosity creeping into him. "I didn't mean to… I thought they were just... ordinary plants. I was making toys for my friends; you know for Christmas…."

Izabella let out a dramatic huff, her eyes turning to the sky as she lifted her hands toward the heavens. "Of course, you didn't. Rose is right! Humans never think before they act. Always so careless!" She completely ignores the good deed the boy was trying to do, so her mother deemed it was time to interfere.

"Calm down dearest one. I know young Edward, here means no harm. "

The Fairy Queen's eyes softened with concern for her daughter's temper, but before she could say anything, the boy suddenly lurched forward, startling both fairies. He had been watching the exchange with wide eyes, and in an impulsive move, he lunged at the Renee, scooping her up in a jar that had been lying on the ground near his cot that he usually uses to avoid going to the outhouse during the night.

Renee was trapped inside, her wings struggling to free themselves from the constricting walls of the glass. "Release me!" the Fairy Queen commanded; her voice full of authority. But the boy only stared, his mouth agape in awe.

"I knew it!" he muttered under his breath. "Fairies… they really do exist… I'm not crazy, wait until I show you to papa"

Izabella gasped in horror, her wings beating furiously as she flew directly in front of him. Her eyes flashed with a mixture of fury and desperation. "Let her go!" she demanded, her voice trembling with emotion. "You can't just take her! She's, my mother! She is a Queen!"

The boy stared at her, dumbstruck. He had expected magic and wonder, but not this—this tiny, angry creature floating before him, so beautiful, so delicate. Her eyes burned with fierce protectiveness, and her features, though small, were like nothing he had ever seen while he was awake only in his dreams. The way her silver brown hair caught the light, the way her silver wings flickered with every movement—it was like staring at a vision from a dream he already had.

"I... I didn't mean to…" he stammered, the jar shaking slightly in his hands. The beauty of the fairy girl overwhelmed him, and for the first time, he realized that perhaps he had gone too far, he only wanted his papa to be proud of him and be happy again.

"Let her go," the girl repeated, her voice softening, though her gaze remained firm. "If you don't, I swear I'll make you regret it." The steel in her command made Edward stop his train of thoughts. His breath caught in his throat. His fingers trembled, not from fear, but from the intoxicating presence of the tiny, fierce creature before him. "I... I'm sorry," he whispered, finally realizing the magnitude of his mistake.

As if to test his sincerity, Izabella flitted closer, her wings brushing the air like a soft breeze. The boy, still entranced by her beauty, slowly remove his hand from the mouth of the jar, his hands trembling as he released the Fairy Queen.

Renee emerged with a graceful flourish, her wings stretching wide, unfurling like a butterfly's. She landed beside her daughter, her expression a mixture of relief and stern wisdom.

"You've learned a valuable lesson, young Edward," Renee said, her voice calm but filled with gentle power. "Respect nature. Respect all that is living, for you are not the only creatures who call this world home."

The boy, still in awe of both the fairy mother and daughter, nodded sheepishly. "I will. I promise. I'll only collect what I need to make my toys."

Izabella glared at him one last time, but her expression softened when she saw the sincerity in his eyes. "See that you don't, or I'll not give you more presents," she muttered, but before she can catch herself, she flew directly at Edward's wrist and bite him, "Don't you ever touch another fairy or so help me" her mother pry her from the stunned boy and made her follow her, their wings sparkling in the fading light.

The boy stood still for a long while, watching them disappear into the forest behind his house. His heart raced—not just from fear, but from wonder. He had discovered something magical today, something he would never forget for all the eternity something that would be forever his.

Izabella: A variant of Isabella that means "God's promise" and since in this story she is a gift given to Renee from a Goddess I found the variation more suitable.
