Pokemon: A Rocket Adventure

Chapter 4: Grass and Lightning

Viridian City - Pokemon Centre

Sarah jolted awake as her metal music alarm went off. She grabbed the pokemon possessed phone from the night stand and turned off the alarm as quickly as she possibly could. Thankfully she had woken up and turned it off before the song could really kick in and the noise could wake her pokemon or anyone in the adjacent rooms.

"I swear I turned that off!" She whispered to herself in irritation.

The Rotom on the back of the phone snickered quietly to itself but due to how quiet the dorm room had become, Sarah heard it.

"Oh you little…!" She turned her phone around so she could see the Rotom's face. It looked at her and gave her an uneasy smile. She sighed and shook her head in annoyance. There was no point being angry with it, Rotoms were known to be mischievous pokemon. "Please, don't turn it back on again and keep it off. Please." She pleaded with it and disabled the alarm. The Rotom decided not to try its luck and left it off.

With a sigh that turned into a yawn, Sarah got out of bed and as quietly as she could, made her way to the ensuite bathroom to begin getting ready for the day. About half an hour later she emerged from the bathroom feeling clean and refreshed. She smiled while she pulled her hair back into its ponytail and looked at her sleeping pokemon. Lex had drifted closer to Snivy during the night and Snivy had rolled over, facing the Pikachu and now both of them were in like a cute hug. Not wanting to disturb them she quietly gathered her clothes and got dressed in the bathroom.

Lex shifted in his sleep and his nose rubbed against Snivy's flared collar. He wiggled his nose but ultimately he ended up sneezing which woke them both up. As he woke up he found he was next to a grass type pokemon and it left him confused for a moment until his brain woke up and he then remembered the previous day's events. He then realised just how close he was and then squeaked before quickly moving away with an embarrassed blush colouring his cheeks. Snivy tilted its head in confusion as well but more in regards to the Pikachu's behaviour.

As Sarah exited the bathroom again, now fully dressed, she smiled as she saw that her two pokemon were now awake.

"Good morning you two," She greeted them which caused them to turn and face her. "I hope you slept well,"

"Pika,"

"Sni,"

She smiled and gave each of them a pet on the head. Lex let out a soft whine as the petting made him realise his hair was a mess and by licking his paws he began straightening his hair out. Sarah chuckled softly while Snivy watched him curiously. It took him a few minutes but he managed to get his bed head straightened out and his long bangs back into shape.

"Ok you two," Sarah began once Lex had finished grooming himself. "I think today we'll do some training before we head out. I want to see what you can do Snivy and later I want to see how well you two can work together and to finish we'll see how well you fare against each other in a friendly battle,"

Snivy seemed ready for it but Lex looked a little unsure. He had nothing against training with Snivy but now that it's part of the team, he didn't feel right fighting his team mate.

"But first, we'll have breakfast in the canteen," Sarah smiled as she picked up her backpack and headed for the door with her pokemon following behind her.

The canteen looked like what you would expect from a large dinner, with lots of tables and chairs all around and a large self service line to one side. After loading a tray with her breakfast that consisted of cereal, two slices of toast with strawberry jam, and a cup of coffee and, she then put her breakfast on an unoccupied table. She then got two bowls of nutritional pokemon food from the pokefood dispenser provided by the PokeCentre for her two Pokemon as well.

While Sarah and her pokemon ate. She opened up her Pokedex and selected the Snivy that was registered to her and began to look at its stats. It was then that she noticed what gender her Snivy is.

"Huh, so you're a girl," she stated as she looked down at the female Snivy. The pokemon in question blinked before she nodded. Sarah stared at her Snivy for a short moment in thought before a thought then came to mind when her eyes flicked over to Lex. "Oh hey, now that you're part of my team, would you like a name?"

Snivy stopped eating as she contemplated the question. She tilted her head in thought, wondering if she wanted a name or not.

"Hey, uh, what do you think? Should I have a name?" She asked as she looked over to her team mate.

Lex looked up at her and tilted his head slightly. "Um, it's up to you really. I chose my own name…" he rubbed his chin thoughtfully with a red paw. "...but, having a name makes me feel closer to Sarah, like I'm actually her pokemon,"

Snivy took in his words and thought on it for a moment longer. Sarah meanwhile waited patiently as her pokemon talked. Finally with a smile the Snivy looked up at her new trainer and nodded eagerly. Sarah smiled back happily. "Alright, give me a minute to think of something. I'd like you to have a something memorable,".

While her pokemon ate their breakfast, Sarah used her phone to surf the internet for inspiration. While looking at articles that talked about the various snake pokemon of the world, she stumbled upon a link that took her to an ancient history page. This article spoke of a time before pokemon and was about old world myths and legends. She found an article talking about an old Olympian monster woman. It spoke of a legendary monster that had the body of a giant snake, the torso and head of a beautiful woman and hair made of snakes. She then smiled as she read the name.

"Hey Snivy, what do you think?" She asked as she held her phone down to her pokemon so they could see.

Snivy tilted her head as she looked at the picture then at the name. She repeated the name a few times before looking back at the picture of the large snake human hybrid thing. She noted how pretty the human face looked and she pictured herself as a large Serperior and smiled.

"Sni snivy!" She declared with a smile.

"You like it?"

"Sni," she replied with a nod.

Sarah smiled as she put her phone away and opened her Pokedex. She selected her Snivy and toggled the option to give her a nickname.

"Welcome to the team, Medusa!" She declared as she finalised the input.

The Snivy, now named Medusa, smiled with pride.

After breakfast the three of them stepped out onto the training field. The training field consisted of a regular battle arena that dominated the middle area and several smaller sections around it for various training methods. The battle arena was already in use by a pair of trainers with pokemon engaged in a battle so Sarah lead her team to a corner training area.

"Ok, we can't use the battle ground just yet, so…" she looked at the fencing around the perimeter of training field and nodded as she found several targets fixed to the fence in the corner. "...Medusa, let's see what you can do,"

The newly named Medusa nodded and smiled. She was already starting to enjoy having a name.

Sarah had read up what moves her Snivy currently knew and wanted to see how she performed with them. Seeing that her Snivy was ready, Sarah pointed at the targets on the fence. "Ok, use Vine Whip and hit those targets!"

Two green vines emerged from inside the flared collar on her neck and shot forward at a fast pace. The bulbous ends of both vines struck the target in the middle yellow band with a crack.

"Good, now the others!"

"Sni!" She cried as she shot out her vines again. They cracked against the other target in the same general area and the moment the vines retracted, she shot them back out against the last target.

"Alright, good. You have decent accuracy on a single target. Now, I want you to hit two separate targets at once,"

Medusa nodded. She looked at the targets to make sure she knew where they were and then shot out her vines again. One vine struck a target on the outer edge while the other missed and cracked against the fence.

"Not bad. You have fairly good coordination. We can work on multi-target accuracy later. Ok Lex, your turn,"

Lex nodded as he stepped up. He let out a cry and his electricity arced off him after a few moments of charging and hit the target. He repeated it for the others and then finished off by trying to hit two targets at the same time. As his energy built inside him, he held out his arms and held up his open paws, facing a target each. With another cry he released his power, he was engulfed in his electrical aura and blue lightning seemed to arc from around his open paws. Both arcs struck the intended targets.

"Well done. Hmm, see if you can hit all three with a continuous stream, Lex,"

Lex nodded and took a moment to think on how to do it before he stood sideways and held one paw out. He aimed his paw at the first target as he concentrated his power. When he was again surrounded by his electrical aura he released his energy into another lightning arc that followed the direction his paw was pointing. When his blue electricity hit the target he moved his outstretched arm along the line of targets and his lightning moved to follow.

"Awesome, you can use your paws to direct your ranged attacks. We definitely will have to work on that when we get around to helping you with your energy gathering."

Lex smiled at the praise and nodded.

For the rest of the morning Sarah helped train her two pokemon with target practice. Both were very accurate at hitting the targets but it was yet to be seen how well Medusa and Lex would do on a moving target. Medusa also had good control with one of her other moves, Razor Leaf. As Sarah watched her Snivy fling a bunch of razor sharp leaves at the targets, she began to wonder if they could be used in defense. Maybe the cluster of leaves could be used to block incoming attacks or maybe obscure the opponent's view.

After lunch they had a bit of a rest, while watching other trainers and their pokemon battle. The battle arena eventually became vacant so Sarah took the opportunity for her pokemon to spar together.

"Ok you two, try to treat this like a regular battle,"

Medusa nodded but Lex still looked a little uncertain.

"Lex go in for a Tackle, Medusa retaliate with Vine Whip!"

Lex hesitated for a moment before he jumped forward onto his forepaws and began to charge at the Snivy. Medusa leant forward as she fired out her vines at the charging Pikachu. Lex jumped to the side, avoiding the initial strike but as he continued his charge he was caught off guard as a vine came back and swept his legs out from under him. He cried out in surprise as the vine tripped him up and he fell onto his belly.

"Be mindful of your surroundings Lex," Sarah warned.

The Pikachu picked himself back up and slowly walked back over to his position to start again. He still looked unsure and it became noticeable to both Sarah and Medusa.

"Is everything ok Lex?"

"Don't worry about hurting me Lex. We're pokemon, this what we do and being on a team like this will help us both grow,"

"Are you sure?"

"Of course! Why are you so timid about this?"

"We're teammates now, I don't want to hurt you, but if you're sure I'll do my best,"

"Alright then. Let's make Sarah proud."

After their little conversation, Lex turned to Sarah and nodded to her and then got back down into a battle stance. He looked a lot more confident this time.

"Alright, again, Lex use Tackle and Medusa defend with Vine Whip!"

Lex broke into a sprint, moving faster this time around. Medusa was surprised by his speed now that he wasn't hesitating and knew she'd miss so this time she made her vines cross in front of her and dug the ends into the ground. Lex was too fast and too close to avoid the barrier made by her vines and crashed into them. Medusa cringed from the shock of pain that ran through her vines upon his impact and after he bounced off them, she retracted her vines and gave them a slight shake.

"Nicely done you two. That was some good speed in your Tackle, Lex, and that was a nice way to use your vines to form a guard Medusa, keep it up. Ok, let's try that again!"

Lex had landed on his paws after he bounced off of Medusa's vines and upon hearing his trainer, he ran back a bit to give himself room and went in for another Tackle. He pushed himself as he ran and managed to sprint faster as he closed the gap between himself and Medusa. Again she was caught off guard by his speed and only just managed to cross her vines in front of herself to block him.

"Was that…?" Sarah blinked as she watched her Pikachu charge in for another Tackle and seemed to run a bit faster. But just as he was about to hit Medusa's vines, she saw a brief flare of white energy around him. Lex then collided with Snivy's vines and bounced back again. "Medusa, are you ok?"

Medusa nodded as she pulled her vines out of the ground and gave them a slight shake before she retracted them. Her vines were starting to get sore after taking two Tackle attacks.

"Ok, keep blocking him or try to dodge him for the moment, Medusa. I think he's on the verge of something," she then turned her attention to her Pikachu. "Lex, I want you to keep up your Tackles. Pour everything you have into them!"

The Pikachu nodded in confirmation as he moved back to give himself some more room then charged in again. As he ran, he could feel a build up of energy that felt like it was stuck. As he pushed himself to go faster, he felt little bits of this energy bleed out. He focused on this trapped energy he could feel and tried to will it to come out. After a few more Tackles that Medusa either dodged or blocked, Lex finally felt the dam break and as he charged in for another Tackle, he shot forward at a blistering pace. He moved so fast that Medusa had no time to react and Lex landed a direct hit into her chest and sent her flying backwards while he bounced back.

"He did it!" Sarah cheered as she watched her partner successfully pull off a new move.

Lex saw that Medusa was laying on the floor after he landed his attack and the worry about hurting his team mate/friend came flooding back. He was about to rush over and check to see if she was alright but she sat up and didn't look that worse for wear.

"A-are you ok?" He called out to her worriedly.

Medusa massaged her chest for a moment before she looked up at him and smiled. "Ow, yeah, that was a good hit!"

Lex sighed in relief that his new friend was ok.

"Lex!" Sarah called to get his attention. When her Pikachu looked over to her, she smiled warmly. "Well done Lex! You just did Quick Attack! Now remember that feeling. I want you to do it a few more times!" Sarah then turned to Medusa. "Think you can dodge or defend while he uses Quick Attack against you?"

Medusa nodded. She was no stranger to Quick Attack but now that she was expecting it, she thought she would at least be able to form some sort of defence.

"Ok, Lex, use Quick Attack! Medusa, block or dodge it!"

For the next ten minutes Lex repeated his Quick Attack with varying degrees of success but by the end of it he knew how to perform it upon command. Sarah was happy with his progress and confident in him to be able to use it now whenever. Medusa managed to form a good defence against the blistering fast tackles as she managed to block or dodge about half of them. Thankfully she wasn't badly hurt from the Quick Attacks she failed to avoid and a little spray of Potion helped relieve what pain she did feel.

After a short snack break to recover some energy, they continued their training. This time Sarah wanted to see if Medusa could use her Razor Leaf attack for defence.

"Ok then. Lex, I want you to use Thundershock towards, but not at Medusa…" The Pikachu nodded in understanding and began to charge up his energy. "...Medusa, I want you to use Razor Leaf, but I want you to try and block Lex's Thundershock with it," Medusa nodded and got ready to unleash her Razor Leaf. Seeing as her pokemon were ready, Sarah nodded and shouted. "Go!"

Lex threw his arms out as he was surrounded by his electrical aura and sparks began to jump from his cheeks. Medusa's collar flared in preparation as she got ready to release her attack while she watched Lex. The moment he drew his paws into his chest and released an arc of lightning, she threw her leaf-like arms forward. A stream of leaves flew out from her collar and towards the lightning bolt. The two attacks collided in the middle and for a couple of seconds it looked like the Razor Leaf was working in holding back the Thundershock, but then the electric attack began to burn and push back the Razor Leaf before it burst right on through it. Medusa on instinct jumped back to avoid being shocked and the lightning bolt from Lex's enhanced Thundershock struck the ground just in front of where she had been standing.

"That's a strong Thundershock," said Medusa, impressed with how easily it broke through her attack.

"Um, thanks. I don't mean to brag but my special attacks will be a lot stronger than they should be,"

"What do you mean?"

"Um, I'll tell you when we're somewhere more private," Lex said with a hint of discomfort.

Medusa noticed how he seemed to become uncomfortable and realised that it was a sensitive subject with him so she decided to let it drop. She gave him a soft smile and nodded.

"Well done you two!" Sarah praised. "Ok, let's try that again. Lex, Thundershock! Medusa, try a Razor Leaf again and see if you can condense your leaves a little more,"

The two pokemon again release their respective attacks. Medusa held her arms out to direct the Razor Leaf then brought her leafy hands together, causing the leaves to bunch up together, becoming a thick disc of leaves.

"Nicely done Medusa!" Sarah praised before the blue Thundershock struck the condensed Razor Leaf. The condensed Razor Leaf managed to hold for a couple more seconds than the previous attempt before the lightning burst on through.

For the remainder of the day they continued to train and hone their skills and they finished off with a battle. As they were both on the same team, Sarah didn't want either of them to get hurt so the rule to win the battle was to knock the opponent out of the battlefield's boundary. It turned out that Medusa was a bit more experienced in battle than Lex and she managed to get the better of him and knock him out of the battlefield.

After that Sarah called it a day. She was happy with both Lex's and Medusa's performances and she was proud of Lex for learning a new move. With Thundershock and Quick Attack in his arsenal he was more battle ready. He just needed an opponent on a similar level to truly put him to the test.

The next morning Sarah, with Lex perched on her shoulder, left the Pokemon Centre to continue on their way. They only made it a few steps before they heard the automatic door swish open again and that was then followed by a familiar male voice.

"Oh hey, glad to see you made it here safely,"

Sarah turned around and saw the man that helped her out the other day. He was in his late twenties, at a similar height to her or maybe a few inches taller. He had a lightly tanned skin tone, hazel coloured eyes and black hair. He wore black trainers and tracksuit bottoms with gold trim, a white t-shirt with a picture of a Luxury Ball on it and an open red jacket. Around his waist was a belt for holding his pokeballs and she could see that there was only one.

"Oh, you're the guy with the Electivire," she smiled gratefully. "Thank you for saving us from that Fearow and its flock,"

The guy smiled. "Hey, not a problem. Oh, the name's Roy vy the way, Roy Fenix, nice to meetcha," he extended his hand toward her.

Sarah shook his hand. "Sarah Townsend, nice to meet you too," She then reached up to stroke her Pikachu's cheek. "And this is my partner, Lex,"

"Wow, that's a cool looking Pikachu. Did you get it from Professor Oak?"

"Oh, no, my boss gave him to me,"

"Huh, cool," He then pointed with his thumb over his shoulder to the side path around the PokeCentre. "Fancy a quick battle, my starter vs yours?"

"Err, by starter, do you mean your Electivire?"

"Huh, oh! No, no, it's having a long deserved vacation. I came to Kanto to start afresh,"

Sarah looked to her Pikachu. "What do you think Lex, up for it?"

Lex thought for a moment but then nodded.

"Ok, let's go to the battlefield," Sarah said to Roy.

Roy smiled with enthusiasm and began to walk along beside her. "Awesome, nothing like a good friendly battle,"

Sarah nodded with a smile, she was starting to like his energy. "Yeah, so, you're starting anew here, where have you been before?"

"I'm from Sinnoh and I've taken part in the Sinnoh League, Hoenn League, Kalos League and completed the Alolan Island Trials,"

"Wow, you've been all over,"

"Yeah, but the furthest I ever got was to the semi-finals,"

"Still got pretty far. I've just started my first pokemon adventure,"

Roy looked confused and opened his mouth, but the moment Sarah saw his face she knew the question he was about to ask since it's been something that many people have asked her over the years.

"I know what you're about to ask and yes, this is my first time taking my Pokemon Journey. My mother fell ill when I was kid and I couldn't just leave my Dad alone to look after Mum so I put my journey on hold while I helped look after her,"

Roy smiled at her explanation. "That's quite noble of you. I suppose your Mum's better now since you're here,"

"Thank you and yeah. She's not one hundred percent, I doubt she'll ever will be again, but she's in no danger anymore though,"

Roy nodded and smiled at that. It was by then that the pair made it to the battle field behind the PokeCentre and Roy took his position at one end of the battle arena. Sarah took her position with a hint of nervous excitement at the prospect of having her first ever trainer battle.

"Ok, I only have the one pokemon I got from Professor Oak right now, so are you ok with this being a one on one?"

Sarah nodded in agreement. "Sure, like you said, starter vs starter,". Sarah then held her arm out towards the battle field. "Alright Lex, you're up!"

"Pika!" Lex cried as he ran down her arm and jumped down and took his position on the battlefield.

Sarah then picked off Medusa's pokeball from her belt and released the Snivy from her ball. "Be sure to cheer him on Medusa,"

"No way, you have a Snivy, that's awesome!" Roy exclaimed. He then plucked the only pokeball from his belt and tossed it up into the air. It snapped open and in a burst of white light, a small blue turtle pokemon materialised on the battlefield.

"Squirtle!" It called out.

"Lex, you may have the type advantage but keep your guard up,"

Lex nodded his head in understanding as he lowered himself down to all fours in a battle stance. Like his trainer, he knew he had the type advantage but also remembered the conversation Roy and his trainer had moments ago and that Roy was an experienced trainer.

"Alright Sarah, I'll let you have the first move!" Roy called out.

Sarah nodded and threw out her arm as she yelled. "Let's start this off with Quick Attack, Lex!"

"Pika!" Lex yelled out in acknowledgement as he jumped forward and broke into a sprint before he shot forward at a blistering pace.

"Wow that's fast," Roy thought to himself before he called out to his new pokemon. "Squirtle, defend with Withdraw!"

The tiny turtle pokemon pulled its arms, legs and head into its shell as quickly as it could. It managed to do it in just the nick of time as the moment its head popped into its shell, Lex crashed into the front of its shell. Lex grunted from the hard impact to the shell and the force from his Quick Attack knocked the Squirtle back a few feet. The Squirtle shell landed on its back and spun around a bit.

Roy smiled as he saw that the hole for his Squirtle's head in its shell was facing him when it stopped spinning.

"Squirtle, use Water Gun as you are!"

Sarah blinked in surprise as she didn't understand the command her opponent gave his pokemon. She was then taken again aback as she witnessed the result.

The turtle pony made a muffled reply to the command before a jet of water erupted from the shell's head hole. The torrent of water acted like a jet and propelled the shell towards Lex. The Pikachu gasped in shock at witnessing Water Gun being used in such a manner and dove out of the way of the incoming shell missile. As the shell shot past the Pikachu the Squirtle popped back out of its shell and landed on its feet facing its opponent.

"Nice job, now Tackle!"

"Squirt!" The water pokemon acknowledged as it began to run at Lex.

"Dodge and Quick Attack!" Sarah commanded.

Lex quickly dropped to all fours again and sped off before the Squirtle could get close. He then began to use his Quick Attack to run circles around the turtle pokemon as he looked for an opening.

"Fall onto your back and spin in the opposite direction while using Water Gun!"

The Squirtle did as told. He fell onto his back while going into a spin and used Water Gun. The attack further helped to increase the Squirtle's spin as it continued to spray water.

Lex squeaked as he saw the jet of water rapidly closing in on him. Thinking fast the electric mouse jumped to avoid the attack then skidded to a stop upon landing. The Squirtle came out of its spin while ending its Water Gun and faced its opponent again.

"You good buddy?" Roy asked his pokemon as he noticed it looked a bit dizzy. The Squirtle shook its head to stop the world from spinning before it nodded back at its trainer.

"That was a creative way to defend against Quick Attack," Sarah thought to herself after watching the display of Water Gun being used defensively. "Lex might have the type advantage against his Squirtle but Roy has the battle experience to nullify his disadvantage. Hmm, and Lex currently doesn't have a way to get around that so now might be a good time to brute force it with his electricity."

"Lex, I think it's time to try a Thundershock!"

"Pi," Lex nodded as he began to gather his energy.

Roy quickly noticed that Lex seemed to be taking longer than normal to gather his energy for a Thundershock and he capitalised on that.

"Quickly, Water Gun!"

"Squirtle squirt," The small turtle pokemon nodded as it shot another jet of water from its mouth at the Pikachu.

"Lex, look out!" Sarah warned.

Lex opened his eyes just in time to see the water heading towards him. He quickly cancelled his energy gathering but realised he didn't have the time to attempt a dodge. Thinking quickly, he remembered what Medusa did with her vines to guard against him and copied it by crossing his arms in front of himself. Just as he ducked his head down behind his crossed arms the Water Gun collided with his improvised guard and had enough force to knock him onto his rear and push him back a little. The hit made him cry out in slight pain as his arms were now sore from the impact. The worst of the hit however was that he got drenched and it matted his long bangs down over his eyes.

"Good job Squirtle, now follow it up with a Tackle!"

"Squirt!" The Squirtle acknowledged and began to run at the blinded Pikachu.

Lex groaned in annoyance from getting wet and vigorously shook himself in an attempt to dry himself off. Unfortunately his wet bangs were still stuck to his face so he reached up with a paw to pull his hair out of his eyes just as he began to feel the thuds of the approaching pokemon.

"Lex, get out of there!" Sarah shouted in worry.

It was too late unfortunately as by the time he cleared his vision, the Squirtle was upon him.

"Pika!" Lex cried in alarm before he cried out in pain as the turtle pokemon collided with him in a shoulder barge. Lex was knocked back a couple of feet and bounced off the floor. He recovered from the hit after the bounce and managed to twist himself around to land on his paws. He winced from the pain and began to breathe a little harder.

"Are you ok Lex?"

The Pikachu nodded despite the pain in his arms and chest.

"Hmm, ok, let's try another Quick Attack, but change direction randomly,"

He nodded and pounced forward before he zipped off at great speed again. Instead of running around his opponent like before, he would pivot and change direction which quickly made it difficult for the Squirtle to keep track of him.

"Nicely done Sarah," Roy quietly praised with a smile before he yelled a command to his pokemon. "Squirtle, the moment you see him come in for the hit, use Withdraw!"

Squirtle nodded nervously as it tried desperately to keep up with the Pikachu but it was basically only seeing the white trails caused by the Quick Attack. Eventually Lex got the Squirtle so lost in trying to see him that he managed to get behind it without it being aware of him and used that moment to strike.

"Behind you!" Roy warned.

Unfortunately the Squirtle had no time to react as the blistering speed of Lex's Quick Attack allowed him to strike his opponent. He grunted as he collided with the back of the Squirtle's head with his own head. The Squirtle cried in pain and face planted into the arena floor while Lex bounced backward and landed on his hind paws, albeit a little dizzily.

"This is our chance Lex, Thundershock!"

Lex shook his head to rid himself of the dizziness and began charging up his power again.

"Squirtle, quickly, Water Gun!"

The Squirtle groaned painfully as it slowly picked itself up and turned to face its opponent. By the time Squirtle turned around, Lex glowed with blue energy and drew his paws into his chest.

"Chuuuuu!" He screamed as he released the electricity in a bright blue arc towards the water type pokemon.

The Squirtle managed to shoot off a short burst of its Water Gun before the electrical arc struck. The Squirtle was engulfed in the blue energy and began to scream in pain. Meanwhile the short burst of the Water Gun flew across the arena and hit the Pikachu right in the face.

"Pika!" He cried out as he cut his attack and was thrown onto his back.

The super effective Thundershock engulfing the Squirtle suddenly ended and left behind a Squirtle that was extra crispy. It let out a gasp of black smoke before it toppled over onto its back out cold.

Roy was taken by surprise at how powerful that Thundershock was. His experience as a trainer over the years has exposed him to many levels of power from various pokemon, so he had been able to tell that the Thundershock this Pikachu had released was definitely one of the strongest he has witnessed. He knew that in the future if he were to battle Sarah with her Pikachu again, he would need to be careful.

After a few long seconds of neither pokemon moving, it almost seemed like the match was going to end as a double KO draw. Just as Roy was about to call the draw, Lex groaned and slowly sat himself up. The Pikachu whined as he was all wet again and began to paw at his long bangs that were once again plastered to his face, over his eyes.

"Well, it looks like your Pikachu can keep going," Roy announced. "So that makes you the winner Sarah, congratulations,"

"Thank you," Sarah smiled happily before she then scooped up her Pikachu. "Well done Lex, you won your first trainer battle." She cheered. Lex, unintentionally, chose that moment in his trainer's arms to shake himself dry. "Gah, Lex!" Sarah squealed as she was pelted with water.

"Pika pika." Lex said apologetically before he began to giggle which Medusa joined in on as she joined them.

Roy smiled at the scene before he held out his pokemon's pokeball and recalled it. "You did well, Squirtle. I'll get you healed up in a moment," He said to the pokeball after he recalled his pokemon and then placed it back onto his belt.

Roy then approached the young woman with a warm smile and held out his hand. "That was a good battle Sarah, well done,"

"Thanks Roy," She smiled as she shook his hand while Lex and Medusa sat on her shoulders.

"So, are you taking the Gym Challenge?"

"I sure am,"

Roy gave Sarah an enthusiastic smile. "Awesome. Right, you just got yourself a friend and a rival," He then began to make his way to the Pokemon Centre. "I look forward to the next time we meet. But until then, see ya later Sarah!"

Sarah smiled as she waved to her new friend/rival. "See you later Roy, and thank you."

The young man waved with a smile before he disappeared around the corner. Sarah smiled with happy excitement while she petted both of her pokemon. She and Lex won their first trainer battle and made a new friend and rival in the process, to which Sarah looked forward to seeing again on her travels. This was a good start for her journey, now that her pokemon were battle ready, and after making sure that Lex was ok after his battle she left the PokeCentre and began heading north for Viridian Forest.

As the young woman with the unusual Pikachu and Snivy left the training field a pair of people, a man and a woman in casual trainer attire, walked out from the far corner. They had watched the battle and found the unusually red and black marked Pikachu to be very interesting.

"What do you think?" the man asked his partner.

"Exotic and looked strong," the woman replied.

"Worth pursuing?"

"Hmm, let's not jump to conclusions yet. I think we should observe it a bit longer,"

The man nodded in understanding. "You're right. We don't want to repeat the same mistakes as those three morons,"

"Too right!" The woman agreed.

The two smirked at each other before giving each other a fist bump. They both wore white fingerless gloves and on the back of the gloves was a black R.

(Author Notes:

Thank you for reading and I hope you are enjoying this story so far.

I want to apologise for how long this chapter took to come out. I had got two thirds of the way through this at the start of October but then got a bad Cold that forced me to stay off work for a week and killed my motivation. A week after recovering from that, i fell ill again with Cellulitis (which seems to randomly get me a couple times a year now…) which forced me to have more time off work and killed all my motivation to write. Thankfully i'm better now and got my motivation back.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback and any suggestions you may want to share.

Thank you.)
