Chapter 40: Battle for Angel Island
Shang Tu Island – Pangu Lagoon, Noon Hours
The sun hung low, casting golden light across Pangu Lagoon, nestled in the heart of Pangu Forest. The tranquil beauty of the lagoon was undeniable, its calm waters reflecting the towering trees that surrounded it. Ancient, crumbling structures lined the edges of the water, remnants of a civilization long since vanished. Moss clung to the weathered stones, and some of the ruins were partially submerged.
The serene silence was shattered by the rumble of an approaching engine. The Marvelous Queen came into view, the vehicle hovered before slowly descending onto the grassy ground near the ruins. With a hiss, Fang the Hunter leaped out onto the grass, landing with a thud.
"Ugh, finally!" Fang groaned, stretching dramatically. He stomped toward the ruins, his frustration evident. "Feels like we've been going in circles for ages!" He threw his hands up in exasperation before shooting an accusatory glare at his radar.
Behind him, Bark and Bean followed. Bark crossed his arms and raised a skeptical eyebrow at Fang, as if to ask, Are you sure this is the right place?
"Of course it is!" Fang snapped, shaking the emerald radar in his hand. "The fat man fixed the stupid radar himself! See?" He pointed to the pulsing purple dot on the screen. "Mook! It's right here!"
Bark only grunted in acknowledgment, though his narrowed eyes suggested he was still annoyed by how long it had taken them to get there.
"Oh, please!" Fang scoffed, rolling his eyes. "We could've gotten here sooner if you hadn't been all friendly and cuddly with that town's dock and its people. Seriously what's the deal with you and that deer innkeeper, huh? Her kids, too? You want to say something?" His tone was dripping with annoyance.
Bark leaned back slightly, a sweatdrop forming on his brow as an embarrassed blush crept across his face. Fang wasn't entirely wrong. They'd spent the previous day in Shuigang's snowy town, taking a detour that, in hindsight, had delayed their job.
But Bark couldn't bring himself to regret it. The townsfolk, despite their hardships, had been kind and welcoming. The innkeeper, Anni, and her two children, Ridi and Miri, had gone out of their way to make the Hooligans feel at home. Bark had spent hours listening to their stories, their resilience in the face of their kingdom's turmoil leaving an impression on him. It had been hard to leave them behind, especially knowing they were struggling under Prince Dail's erratic behavior. And Robotnik… Ugh. He remembered their employer's dismissive response when asked about the situation.
"What? How should I know, you idiots? Just do your job like I hired you to do!" Robotnik's words replayed in Bark's mind. Somehow, after spending time in that town and seeing the people's plight, Bark wasn't so sure about Robotnik's intentions. But Fang would never listen to that kind of talk, so Bark kept his thoughts to himself.
Meanwhile, Bean had wandered off a little, his hands on his hips as he surveyed the ruins. He took a deep breath, exhaled dramatically, and suddenly turned his head toward…nothing. Or perhaps something no one else could see. "Been a while since we've seen each other, huh?" he said to the air, his tone conversational as he talk to someone or perhaps to multiple people?. "Yeah, that's what happens when a novice writer crams too many characters into one story. Too much to juggle, ya know? I mean, seriously, the Hard-Boiled Heavies? Really?" He stuck out his tongue mockingly, wagging it at nobody in particular.
Fang and Bark both froze, glancing over at Bean with mutual expressions of bafflement. They exchanged a look that screamed, He's doing it again, before choosing to ignore him entirely.
"Whatever," Fang muttered, waving a dismissive hand. "Let's keep moving. I'm not botching another job!" He pointed forward toward the ancient ruins. "If we need the Marvelous Queen, I'll call her. For now, we're saving fuel." He grumbled under his breath, glaring at the ancient buildings as if they were personally responsible for his woes. "Stupid islands… Can't wait to get out of here."
With that, the Hooligans began venturing deeper into the ruins, Fang leading the way with his emerald radar clutched tightly in his hand. "This emerald is going to be ours," he muttered, a gleam of greed and anticipation in his eyes.
As they stepped into the shadows of the ancient city, the temperature dropped noticeably. The cool air felt refreshing after the midday sun, though it brought with it an uneasy stillness.
"Brrr," Bean muttered, shivering slightly. He glanced around at the moss-covered walls and crumbling structures. "This place has some weird juju!" His voice was lighthearted, but there was a flicker of unease in his expression. Bark nodded silently in agreement, his eyes scanning their surroundings. Something about this place felt…off.
The ruins were hauntingly beautiful, ancient symbols and faded murals spoke of a civilization long forgotten, their footsteps echoing softly in the hollow silence as they delved deeper into the city. Whatever secrets these ruins held, the Hooligans were determined to uncover them, though none could shake the feeling that they were being watched.
Angel Island – Hidden Palace
Within the ancient sanctuary of the Hidden Palace, the Master Emerald's ethereal green light illuminated the fierce battle unfolding. The air hummed with energy as Lilac and Metal Lilac clashed, their Dragon Boosts colliding in a display of raw power. Their foreheads pressed against each other, Lilac glared into the machine's pink optics, her own eyes blazing with fury and grief. Metal Lilac, in contrast, met her gaze with an eerie glee, as if savoring the torment etched across her counterpart's face.
"Ahhh!" Lilac cried, pouring her anguish into a final push. The clash of energy sent out a shockwave that rippled through the cavern, forcing both to stagger back. They landed on opposite sides, their eyes locked in an unyielding glare.
MINOR DAMAGE DETECTED.
Metal Lilac's internal systems assessed the situation as she rose to her feet. Her synthetic frame hummed as she extended her metal tendrils, preparing to go on the offensive. Her counterpart was proving more tenacious than expected, but so was she.
"Why?!" Lilac's voice cracked as she charged again. Metal Lilac sidestepped, countering with a cyclone that struck Lilac squarely in the stomach. Lilac gasped as the force sent her hurtling upward. Before Metal Lilac could follow up, Carol and Knuckles leapt into the fray, claws and fists aiming for the machine in a flurry of coordinated strikes.
"You're dead!" Carol shouted, her voice filled with anguish as she unleashed a relentless assault. Knuckles followed suit, his fists flying in a barrage of punches.
Metal Lilac's optics analyzed their movements, easily evading their attacks. Her processors identified signs of fatigue and sluggishness in both fighters, recognizing their exhaustion from prior battles. With calculated efficiency, she grabbed their arms mid-attack, her strength overwhelming theirs as she slammed their bodies together with a sickening force. Both brawlers grunted in pain before she spun, hurling them across the cavern like discarded toys. They landed far away, groaning but too drained to immediately recover.
Refocusing, Metal Lilac turned her attention back to Lilac—just as Lilac descended from above with a fierce kick. The strike connected, slamming Metal Lilac's head into the stone floor and cracking the ground beneath her.
MINOR DAMAGE DETECTED.
Lilac landed, her tears falling freely as she lashed out with her single hair whip, striking Metal Lilac repeatedly. Each strike echoed with the raw emotion fueling her attacks, her face twisted in pain and fury.
Metal Lilac blocked the blows, her systems struggling to keep up. She stared at Lilac's tear-streaked face, and for the first time, the glee in her pink optics flickered with something else. Her processors registered Lilac's devastation as…unexpected. She had anticipated grief, yes. Anger, absolutely. But this…this depth of sorrow was something her programming struggled to quantify.
And then, a single tear fell from Lilac's face, landing on Metal Lilac's metal frame. The droplet shimmered in the light of the Master Emerald before sliding off.
MINOR DAMAGE DETECTED.
For a fleeting moment, Metal Lilac felt an unfamiliar sensation—remorse? No, it wasn't possible. She wasn't designed for that. She wasn't supposed to feel.
"Why…" Lilac's voice cracked, breaking through Metal Lilac's moment of introspection. But her systems quickly overrode the hesitation. It wasn't the time for this… weakness.
Grabbing one of Lilac's hair tendril, Metal Lilac activated an electrical surge, sending a violent jolt through her counterpart's body. Lilac screamed as the shock coursed through her, her hair yanked painfully as Metal Lilac hurled her into Carol. The two landed in a heap, their bodies battered and breathless.
"You…" Lilac's voice trembled. Carol, lying beside her, could only muster a weak, pained, "It… hurts…" before her eyes fluttered closed in exhaustion.
Metal Lilac stood tall, her optics scanning for her next target. A sudden barrage of cyan lasers streaked toward her, forcing her to pivot. Her optics zeroed in on the green figure firing at her from across the cavern.
Torque aimed his wispon with precision, each shot aimed to incapacitate the mechanical threat. But Metal Lilac moved with blinding speed, dodging every blast. As he reloaded, Torque's eyes flicked toward Tails, who was still frozen in place, his face pale and his hands trembling.
"Tails!" Torque called out, desperation in his voice. But the fox didn't respond, still lost in his own spiraling thoughts. "Please, snap out of it!" Torque pleaded, understanding all too well the hopelessness Tails felt, but unable to pull him out of it.
Metal Lilac's optics shifted focus to Torque. Her programming identified him as a priority target—the chaser her creator had marked for capture. She recalculated her approach, formulating a plan to neutralize him. Perfect.
Torque anticipated her charge, readying his rocket boost to dodge, but instead of heading straight for him, Metal Lilac veered to the side, her target revealed.
"Tails!" Torque shouted in alarm, realizing too late what was happening.
"Huh? Gah!" Tails snapped out of his daze just as Metal Lilac grabbed him by the neck. Her grip was like iron, effortlessly lifting him off the ground.
"Tails!" Torque shouted again, his voice filled with urgency as he aimed his wispon. But his hands hesitated as Metal Lilac moved, positioning Tails directly in front of her as a living shield.
"Drop him, now!" Torque barked, his voice trembling with anger and frustration. But Metal Lilac's pink optics glowed brighter, her silence a chilling response as she tightened her grip on Tails, daring Torque to act, she knew he wouldn't.
And she seized the opportunity. With an unnervingly swift motion, she propelled herself toward Torque, who tried to fire in her direction. But it was too late. She unleashed an electric cyclone, the force of the attack smashing Torque to the side. The energy shattered his wispon in a burst of sparks, sending Gyro flying with a startled chirp as both alien partners were tossed aside like ragdolls.
Metal Lilac's pink optics glowed with triumph as she straightened up, her gaze falling on the broken wispon. A glint of glee sparkled on her metallic face. The long-range threat was neutralized, she calculated. Torque was out, and his companion disoriented. She tightened her grip on Tails, whose struggling had become weaker. He squirmed in her grasp, his small hands pushing futilely against her cold metal arm.
"Why..." Tails whispered, his voice barely audible. His body trembled, not with fear but with profound grief. His mind reeled with the weight in Sonic, his heart breaking under the pressure of their current peril. He felt utterly defeated.
For a brief moment, Metal Lilac's optics flickered, her cold confidence faltering as the strange feeling stirred deep within her programming again. Why? Why did she feel this? She wasn't supposed to experience discomfort or hesitation. Yet, seeing Tails's despair made her pause. Her grip on him loosened slightly as her processors scrambled for an explanation.
But the moment of hesitation cost her.
From the ground, Knuckles erupted in a burst of raw power, his fist colliding with Metal Lilac's jaw in a devastating uppercut.
MAJOR DAMAGE DETECTED.
The impact sent her flying across the cavern, her grip on Tails releasing as the fox fell. Knuckles caught him midair, landing hard but steadying himself as he held him.
"Tails…" Knuckles said, his voice hoarse and urgent. He shook him lightly, trying to snap him out of his despair. "This isn't the time! You've got to focus!"
Tails barely stirred, his body heavy with grief. "I… I can't… Sonic. I couldn't…" His words trailed off into sobs, his entire body trembling as waves of helplessness washed over him, paralyzing him in place.
Knuckles's jaw clenched as he felt the fox's grief deep in his chest. But there wasn't time for mourning even if it pained him as well. He opened his mouth to urge Tails to keep fighting, but before he could speak, Tails's eyes shot wide with alarm.
"K-Knuckles!" Tails shouted, pointing past him.
Knuckles whipped around, his heart sinking. Metal Lilac had risen, her body sparking and damaged, but still functional. Worse, she was now near the Master Emerald, her tendrils wrapping tightly around its glowing surface.
"She wouldn't…" Knuckles muttered in disbelief.
But she did.
Metal Lilac's optics flared as she tapped into the Master Emerald's power. The tendrils pulsed with energy, siphoning the ancient gem's power directly into her systems. Her metal frame began to shimmer faintly, a golden aura forming around her as the emerald's energy coursed through her body.
"Knuckles! Launch me!" Tails suddenly shouted, his voice filled with a surge of courage. Though his body still shook, he knew they couldn't allow the robot to continue absorbing the Emerald's energy.
Knuckles didn't hesitate. Gathering his remaining strength, he hurled Tails with all his might. The fox curled into a tight spin, hurtling toward Metal Lilac like a cannonball.
The impact was precise. Tails collided with Metal Lilac's head, the force knocking her away from the emerald and breaking her connection.
MINOR DAMAGE DETE— I am aware! Metal Lilac snapped, her voice glitching slightly as she steadied herself. She looked at her body, noting the faint golden glow that now emanated from her frame. Though the boost wasn't complete, it would suffice.
She turned her glowing optics back to Tails, her aura intensifying. Without hesitation, she activated her Dragon Dash, hurtling toward the fox like a missile. Tails braced himself, but she was too fast. Her claws grabbed him again, slamming him down into the cavern floor with such force that the impact reverberated through the walls.
"Gah!" Tails gasped, the air knocked out of him. His vision blurred as pain coursed through his body. Metal Lilac didn't stop there; she flung his limp form toward Knuckles, who caught him just in time.
"Tails…" Knuckles grunted, barely able to hold the fox upright. But before he could react further, Metal Lilac was upon them both.
Her tendrils lashed out, wrapping around Knuckles and Tails as sparks danced along their surfaces.
ACTIVATING ELECTRO SURGE.
Electricity surged through her tendrils, arcs of energy crackling violently as both Knuckles and Tails screamed in agony. The cavern filled with the sound of their cries as the currents coursed through their bodies, leaving them charred and unconscious as they collapsed to the ground in a heap.
Metal Lilac straightened, her optics dimming slightly as her systems recalibrated. Two more problems…less, she muttered, her tone laced with an unfamiliar bitterness. But before she could process it further—
LASER!
Her optics widened as a massive cyan beam shot toward her, tearing through the cavern. She barely dodged, but not without consequence. The laser grazed her left side, disintegrating her arm entirely.
MAJOR DAMAGE DETECTED!
She stumbled, her balance momentarily compromised as she turned toward the source. Torque and Gyro hovered midair, the wisp glowing brightly as he prepared to fire another blast.
"G-Gyro, one more!" Torque urged, his voice strained from exhaustion. Gyro chirped weakly in agreement, but before the attack could be unleashed, Metal Lilac countered.
With calculated force, she kicked the unconscious bodies of Tails and Knuckles toward them. Gyro caught Tails, but the weight was too much for the wisp to handle, causing them to fall. Torque, caught off guard, took the brunt of Knuckles's body, both of them collapsing in a heap.
Metal Lilac advanced, closing the distance in an instant despite her damaged frame. Even without one arm, she was relentless. She delivered an electric cyclone straight into Torque, sending him crashing into the cavern wall with devastating force.
Silence fell as Torque slumped to the ground, his body motionless. Gyro cried in distress, struggling to free himself from under Tails's weight. The little wisp's cries echoed faintly in the cavern, their once-bright hope now overshadowed by Metal Lilac's overwhelming presence.
Metal Lilac stood among the ruins of battle, her systems struggling to recalibrate as she inspected the sparking remains of her severed arm. Wires dangled loosely, sparking with every slight movement. Her optics dimmed momentarily, recalculating. This incomplete super state had proven far less invulnerable than she anticipated, but it was enough. Her enemies lay scattered and defeated. She allowed herself a brief respite, her remaining arm lowering slightly.
But from the silence, a voice rang out.
"You!" Lilac's anguished cry shattered the stillness.
Metal Lilac spun around, her posture tensing as her organic counterpart launched herself forward with a final, desperate Dragon Boost. The sheer force of the attack pushed Metal Lilac back, their bodies colliding in a fiery explosion of energy.
Lilac's boost continued, unrelenting, as she poured all her remaining strength into driving the robot backward. Her anger burned white-hot, her emotions raw and unfiltered. Her friends were hurt—bruised, beaten, unconscious. Knuckles, Carol, and Tails were down. Torque was barely hanging on. Sonic… it all surged within her, giving her the strength for one last stand.
"Ahhhh!" Lilac screamed her tears mixing with the smoke and dust staining her face. Her scales glinted in the emerald's light as she pushed harder, desperate to break through.
Metal Lilac braced against the assault, her damaged systems struggling to keep up. She gritted her none existent teeth, the collision forcing her to recalibrate on the spot. Unable to shove Lilac aside, she really was giving her all, but will also too, she activated her last resort. Her tendrils surged with electricity, draining the remnants of the emerald energy she'd absorbed into a massive discharge.
ELECTRO HURRICANE
In a flash, the cavern was engulfed in blinding light, bolts of electricity streaking across every surface. The ground trembled as the energy erupted, coursing through Lilac's body. She screamed in agony, her voice echoing through the chamber as the sheer force overwhelmed her. The electricity surged with devastating potency, scorching the walls and filling the shrine with raw, chaotic power.
Soon, the light faded, leaving the room darkened save for the soft glow of the Master Emerald. Lilac stood, eye to eye with her metallic doppelgänger. Metal Lilac's golden aura dissipated entirely as her systems dimmed.
Lilac stared into her counterpart's pink optics, her own eyes filled with hurt and exhaustion. She opened her mouth as if to speak, but no words came. Finally, her body gave out, and she collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
The cavern fell into silence, the faint hum of the Master Emerald the only sound.
Metal Lilac took a step back, her systems racing. She scanned her surroundings, taking in the bodies strewn across the chamber. Everyone was down. The fight was over. Yet her processors whirred erratically, unable to fully comprehend the sensations coursing through her.
She glanced at her broken arm, her sparking frame a testament to the battle. But her gaze drifted downward to Lilac. Her counterpart lay still, smoke curling from her singed body. Her face, tear-streaked and battered, haunted Metal Lilac's thoughts.
Lilac was the copy, wasn't she? That was the truth, wasn't it?
She raised her intact arm, her sharp fingers spreading as she prepared to deliver the final blow. She could end it now. She could claim herself as the one true Lilac in this exact moment…
…
…
But her body hesitated, trembling as her arm remained poised.
She shook her head violently, frustration mounting. What is wrong with me? she thought, nearly snarling as her body refused to comply. This… this hesitation is hindering me. I hate this!
Turning abruptly, she faced away from her fallen counterpart. She will figure it out, but not know. Her focus returned to her primary objective—the Master Emerald. The massive gem gleamed atop its altar, its radiant green light an endless font of power. Metal Lilac extended her remaining tendrils, wrapping them tightly around the emerald. With a sharp, echoing crack, she wrenched it free from its pedestal, holding it aloft.
The emerald's light bathed her in its glow. For a moment, Metal Lilac was still, staring at the jewel as its power hummed in her grasp. It was beautiful.
But there was no time to dwell on beauty. Her optics locked onto the room's remaining inhabitants, scanning for her secondary objectives.
Torque lay nearby, his limp form barely stirring. The chaser—her creator's target—was essential. Metal Lilac approached, her footsteps echoing ominously. Gyro cried frantically, struggling to push Tails's unconscious body away from Torque. The little Wisp's cries were desperate, pleading in its alien language.
Metal Lilac ignored the noise, grabbing Torque's inert body with her remaining arm and hauling him over her shoulder. He was light, and she calculated he would not wake soon.
Her optics shifted to her brand new objective: Dail.
The prince of Shuigang stood at the edge of the room, his body trembling. He had witnessed the entire fight, and though he barely clung to consciousness, his fear was evident. His wide eyes darted across the room before locking on Metal Lilac, recognition flashing in his mind. He recalled another metal figure, one eerily similar to her, from the night his father fell. The memory sent a chill down his spine.
"No…" he whispered weakly, his voice shaking.
Metal Lilac ignored his whimpers as she approached, setting the emerald down momentarily to lift the prince. Dail didn't resist, his body too battered to fight back. She placed him atop the emerald, securing him for transport.
Her objectives were clear. Her tasks were complete. All that remained was to contact her creator and signal the retreat of the Shuigang fleet. Her engine roared to life as she prepared to leave the cavern, the Master Emerald's light shining brilliantly above her head.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: COMPLETE.
SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: COMPLETE.
TERTIARY OBJECTIVE: PENDING…?
Metal Lilac hesitated for a fraction of a second, her optics scanning the chamber one last time. She stared at her fallen enemies—heroes who had fought so fiercely to stop her. But she forced herself to look away, her engine revving louder.
In a burst of speed, she ascended through the hole in the ceiling, carrying the Master Emerald, Torque, and Dail with her. As she rose, the emerald's light gleamed brighter, casting one final glow over the defeated heroes.
The island began to tremble, the cavern walls shaking violently.
Above, the sun shone down on Sandopolis as Metal Lilac emerged, her battered frame silhouetted against the golden sky. With her mission complete, she sped toward the horizon, disappearing into the distance as the Master Emerald's light continued to shine with radiant intensity.
And below, the island groaned, its very foundation shifting.
Parusa Island – Adventure Square
The warm afternoon sun shone brightly over the bustling hub of Adventure Square, a lively and colorful market nestled in the heart of Parusa Island. Normally filled with cheerful chatter and the calls of merchants peddling their wares, the square had erupted into chaos. The joyous din had been replaced by panicked cries and hurried footsteps as islanders gathered near the shoreline, their gazes locked on the horizon of Trail Ocean.
Onlookers stood frozen in shock as they witnessed the unimaginable. Angel Island, the island of legends, the floating sanctuary that had mystically appeared above their humble home mere days ago, was falling. Its grand landmass tilted precariously as it plummeted toward the ocean below.
The impact was catastrophic.
The moment the island struck the surface of the ocean, a thunderous crash echoed across the waters, audible even from the distant shores of Parusa. Tremors shook the ground beneath the spectators, rattling buildings and sending weaker structures teetering.
"No way…" a young seagull sailor whispered, his voice trembling. He removed his cap and held it to his chest, his wide eyes fixed on the horizon.
"It… fell" a cheetah woman whispered, horror in her voice.
"No… it can't be!" an otter shouted, her voice hoarse with desperation.
The crowd murmured anxiously, their fear palpable. What did this mean? Had something happened inside the island? Did the Sky Battalion cause this?
In the distance, some with sharp eyes caught a glimpse of movement. A faint purple blur streaked across the sky, heading eastward at an alarming speed. It carried with it a radiant green light, shining like a beacon of dread against the heavens.
"Did you see that?!" a little hedgehog cried, pointing toward the blur.
"What was it?!" another yelled, panic rising.
The sight chilled the onlookers to their cores. A sense of dread spread through the crowd like wildfire, each person sharing the unspoken thought that had gripped them all: whatever that light was, it was an omen of worse things to come.
The once-lively square fell silent, save for the distant roar of the ocean as the waves settled. The people of Parusa could only watch in stunned horror as Angel Island, the mystical island of legend was now on the oceans surface.
The battle had been lost.
