Chapter 4: New Boundaries
Kagome tried to shake off the tension from her last encounter with Sesshomaru as she settled back at her desk, but her focus kept slipping, his words replaying in her mind.
"Inuyasha may be family, but he doesn't know you like I do."
What did he mean by that? She'd known Sesshomaru was intense and observant, but he was a mystery she'd barely scratched the surface of. And now, his behavior was inching closer to something personal. A shiver ran down her spine, equal parts excitement and confusion.
The next day, Kagome arrived at work early, hoping to get through her tasks before any more unexpected confrontations. The morning passed in a blur of meetings and paperwork, and just as she was settling into a productive rhythm, her phone buzzed.
Lunch? Kikyo's free, and I thought we could catch up together!
Kagome smiled, the chance to see her cousin sounding like the perfect break.
Definitely. Where should I meet you two?
The café Kikyo suggested was only a few blocks away, and Kagome's spirits lifted as she spotted her cousin seated by the window. Kikyo waved her over, a warm smile lighting up her face.
"Kagome! It's been too long," Kikyo greeted, wrapping her in a hug.
"Too long? We live down the street from each other!" Kagome teased, though the happiness in Kikyo's eyes made her heart ache a little. It was rare for them to get time to reconnect like this.
Inuyasha appeared a moment later, plopping into the seat across from them with his usual grin. "What's up, ladies?"
They laughed, the easy flow of conversation warming the table. Kagome caught up with Kikyo, listening to her cousin's stories about the hospital, while Inuyasha made sarcastic comments, clearly proud of his girlfriend.
Just as Kagome was about to tease them about their synchronized schedules, the door to the café opened—and she felt her heart jolt. Sesshomaru stepped inside, his presence as commanding as ever. His gaze landed on her almost instantly, and she stiffened, wondering if he'd caught her sneaking out for an extended lunch.
Sesshomaru's eyes swept over the group before he approached their table. "Ms. Higurashi," he said, his voice formal but tinged with something more.
Kikyo looked between Kagome and Sesshomaru with mild curiosity. "You two know each other?"
Kagome forced a polite smile. "Yes, Sesshomaru's my boss at Taisho Corp." She glanced at Inuyasha, noting his smirk. "And your boyfriend's older brother, of course."
Kikyo's eyes lit up with realization. "Oh! I had no idea Inuyasha's brother was the Sesshomaru Taisho."
Sesshomaru offered Kikyo a slight nod of acknowledgment. "A pleasure to meet you."
The words were polite, but his gaze drifted back to Kagome, settling there with a weight that sent a flush to her cheeks. There was no mistaking the look of curiosity and quiet intensity in his eyes. And, she realized with a pang of awareness, there was something more—a subtle possessiveness that set him apart from Inuyasha's easy charm.
"Well, if you'll excuse me," Sesshomaru said after a beat, "I'll let you return to your lunch. Kagome, I'll see you back at the office." His tone was coolly professional, but his gaze lingered just a second too long on her, leaving a pulse of warmth in its wake.
As he walked away, Kagome turned back to find Inuyasha smirking at her. "You're blushing," he teased, his tone light.
Kagome waved him off, trying to compose herself. "Don't be ridiculous."
Kikyo gave her a curious look. "Are you and Sesshomaru… close?" Her voice was casual, but Kagome could see a flicker of intrigue in her cousin's eyes.
"Not at all!" Kagome said quickly, feeling her cheeks warm again. "He's just… well, he's intense. And a bit hard to read."
Inuyasha snorted. "Sounds like Sesshomaru, alright. But be careful, Kagome. The guy doesn't have the best reputation for being… accommodating."
Kagome rolled her eyes. "Thanks for the warning, Inuyasha, but I can handle him."
Kikyo chuckled. "She's tougher than she looks. Besides, I'm sure Sesshomaru wouldn't dare cross her."
Kagome laughed, though inwardly, she wasn't so sure. Sesshomaru had proven to be unpredictable, his interest in her clear but his intentions unreadable. As they finished their lunch and returned to work, Kagome couldn't shake the feeling that something was brewing—something that would change the dynamics of her life, both personally and professionally.
Kagome adjusted her blazer, smoothing down any errant creases as she prepared for the afternoon meeting. Today, Taisho Corp. would host a young CEO rumored to be a rising star in the industry. Kouga Ookami, founder of Ookami Enterprises, had rapidly grown his company, establishing it as a formidable name in green technology. Sesshomaru's decision to meet with him signaled Taisho Corp's interest in sustainable energy partnerships, an initiative Kagome had been working on for months. She was eager to see it all come together, though she reminded herself to remain professional.
As she prepared, a message pinged through her headset. "Ms. Higurashi, please join me in the conference room."
Sesshomaru's tone was all business, but she still felt a flutter of anticipation at the thought of working alongside him. With her notes in hand, she hurried to the conference room, stepping inside just as Sesshomaru finished reviewing some documents. He looked up, his intense gaze meeting hers, and for a moment, it felt like their charged moment from the previous day was still hanging in the air.
"Ms. Higurashi, this partnership is yours to oversee. I trust you'll handle it with your usual competence," he said, a subtle hint of something warm in his otherwise reserved tone.
"Thank you, sir. I'll do my best," Kagome replied, heart beating a little faster.
Just then, the door swung open, and a tall man with wild black hair and piercing blue eyes strode in, exuding confidence and charisma. Kagome recognized Kouga instantly from his pictures, but meeting him in person was different—he radiated an energy that filled the room. He glanced around before his gaze settled on her, and a wide, charming grin spread across his face.
"You must be Kagome," he said, extending a hand. "Kouga Ookami, but you can just call me Kouga."
Kagome smiled politely, accepting his handshake. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Ookami."
"Kouga, please. No need for formalities," he insisted, his eyes twinkling. He held her hand a beat too long, and Kagome gently withdrew it, her smile remaining professional.
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he observed their interaction. "Mr. Ookami, shall we begin?" he interjected smoothly, his voice a shade cooler than usual.
"Of course," Kouga replied, though he threw another glance Kagome's way as they all took their seats. Throughout the meeting, he spoke with enthusiasm, gesturing animatedly as he laid out his vision for the collaboration. Sesshomaru listened intently, his expression inscrutable, while Kagome took notes and occasionally chimed in with questions.
Kouga, however, seemed far more interested in Kagome than in Sesshomaru's approval. Whenever she spoke, he leaned forward, nodding and hanging on to her every word. His gaze lingered on her a little too long, his charming smile a little too personal.
"So, Kagome," Kouga said during a lull in the conversation, "I'd love to hear more about your work. Maybe we could continue this over dinner?"
Kagome blinked, surprised at his forwardness, and quickly glanced at Sesshomaru, whose expression remained carefully neutral but whose gaze seemed sharper than ever.
"That's very kind, Kouga," she replied diplomatically, "but I'd prefer to keep our discussions within a professional setting. I'd be happy to schedule a follow-up here at Taisho Corp. if you're interested."
Kouga's grin didn't falter, though there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Ah, a consummate professional. I respect that." He leaned back, undeterred. "But if you ever change your mind, the offer's open."
Sesshomaru's gaze hardened ever so slightly, his jaw tightening as he spoke. "Mr. Ookami, I believe Ms. Higurashi's priorities are clear. Shall we move on?"
Kouga chuckled, giving Sesshomaru a knowing look. "Of course, wouldn't want to get distracted from the matter at hand."
The rest of the meeting continued smoothly, though Kagome couldn't ignore the subtle tension simmering beneath the surface. Sesshomaru's tone remained coldly polite, while Kouga's interest in her only seemed to intensify, his glances growing more pointed as the afternoon wore on.
When the meeting finally concluded, Sesshomaru and Kagome escorted Kouga to the lobby. Kouga lingered, offering her a final handshake, his grip lingering just a bit longer than necessary. "Looking forward to working with you, Kagome," he said, his smile warm but carrying an unmistakable edge of flirtation.
"Likewise, Kouga. Thank you for your time," Kagome replied evenly, determined to keep things strictly professional.
Kouga finally turned and left, his confident stride carrying him out of the building. Kagome breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for the break from his relentless charm.
Before she could return to her desk, however, Sesshomaru spoke up, his tone low and controlled. "Ms. Higurashi, a word."
She looked up, taken aback by the intensity in his eyes. He motioned for her to follow him back to his office. Once inside, he closed the door, his expression guarded yet tense.
"I trust you understand that working with a prospective partner like Mr. Ookami requires… tact," Sesshomaru began, his voice carrying a subtle edge.
Kagome nodded. "Of course, sir. I assure you, I have no intention of mixing business with anything personal."
Sesshomaru's gaze softened just a fraction. "Good. I expect nothing less from you." He paused, his tone dipping. "However, Ookami seems to be under the impression that his… interest in you will go unchallenged."
Kagome met his gaze, unsure if she was imagining the possessive glint in his eyes. "I can handle Kouga's advances, Sesshomaru. He may be an alpha, but I'm not interested in anything beyond working with him."
Sesshomaru's eyes darkened, his voice lowering to a near-growl. "He should respect those boundaries. I don't appreciate his lack of professionalism."
Kagome felt her cheeks warm under his intense gaze, her pulse quickening. She could sense his barely restrained irritation, and a part of her felt oddly pleased by it. "Thank you, Sesshomaru. But I don't need protection—I'm more than capable of handling myself."
Sesshomaru's gaze softened, though his eyes remained fierce. "I have no doubt about your abilities, Kagome. But I won't allow any partner, regardless of their status, to overstep their bounds with my employees."
For a moment, the unspoken tension between them resurfaced, charged and electric. Sesshomaru's protectiveness felt like more than just his usual professionalism, and Kagome's heart raced at the implications.
"Thank you, Sesshomaru," she said quietly, her voice almost a whisper.
He nodded, a faint smile ghosting across his lips. "If Ookami attempts anything beyond business, you are to inform me immediately."
Kagome suppressed a smile. "I will."
As she returned to her desk, she couldn't help but wonder how things would play out now that Kouga was in the picture.
