Mt. Ember, Sevii Islands - Kanto
The rocky trail up Mt. Ember crunches beneath their boots, the oppressive heat wrapping around them like a suffocating blanket. Davey adjusts the straps of his bag, feeling the weight of the Blank, Meadow, and Splash Plates inside. Their goal is clear: find Magmar, the next Knight Pokémon. But as focused as he tries to be, the air around them feels heavy with more than just volcanic heat.
Ashley lingers a step behind, running her fingers along Prinplup's sleek feathers for comfort. Her heart races—not from the climb but from the secret she's been carrying. She's pregnant. Rex's baby. And she hasn't told Davey, the same Davey who used to, maybe still does, have feelings for Rex, even though he has a boyfriend now.
Up ahead, Zorua darts between Eevee's legs, the little fox Pokémon yipping as it playfully nips at Eevee's tail. Jeremiah walks beside Davey, his arms cradling a Pokémon egg. The egg glimmers faintly in the sunlight, fragile yet full of potential.
Davey glances at the egg. "So, how's it feel, knowing you're going to be a Pokémon trainer?"
Jeremiah smirks faintly, adjusting his hold on the egg. "Weird, I guess. It's a lot to wrap my head around."
Ashley, keeping her voice casual, adds, "Has your dad said anything about it yet? Or are you still keeping it quiet?"
Jeremiah sighs, his usual confidence faltering. "Still quiet. You know how he is. If he found out, he'd probably say I'm wasting my time." He looks down at the egg, his grip tightening slightly. "I just… I want to do this my way, you know? Without him breathing down my neck about it."
Davey nods, his expression serious. "Makes sense. He's always been, uh… intense about that kind of thing."
Jeremiah shrugs, trying to brush it off. "Yeah, but I've made up my mind. I'm going to be a trainer, no matter what he thinks."
Ashley watches the exchange closely, her gaze shifting from Jeremiah's determined expression to Davey's thoughtful one. She hugs Prinplup a little tighter, her own secret weighing heavily on her shoulders. With every step they take toward Magmar, the tension between them feels hotter than the volcano's air.
Ashley stops mid-step, blinking as if she didn't hear Jeremiah correctly. "Hold on. You're going to be a Pokémon trainer?"
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow at her reaction. "Uh, yeah? What, is that so hard to believe?"
"Kind of, yeah," Davey chimes in, adjusting his bag. "No offense, but you've spent, like, forever saying Pokémon are for kids. You've called me a nerd for this stuff more times than I can count."
Jeremiah shrugs, his smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I mean, you are a nerd. But maybe I underestimated the whole Pokémon thing. It's… not as lame as I thought."
Ashley snorts, unable to hold back. "Wow, glowing endorsement. I'm sure every trainer out there just felt validated."
"Hey, I'm serious!" Jeremiah protests, holding the egg closer like it's the physical proof of his sincerity. "You hang out with people like you two long enough, you start to see why it's cool. Plus"—he glances down at the egg—"this thing's already growing on me. I don't know what's in here, but it's mine, you know? I wanna see it hatch, raise it. Do something different."
Davey narrows his eyes suspiciously. "Okay, but is this, like, a phase? Are you just doing this to prove something to your dad, or do you actually want to be a trainer?"
Jeremiah's face hardens slightly, his usual playful demeanor slipping. "Does it matter? My dad's never going to get it. But yeah, I think I do want to try. I'm not saying I'm gonna be the next Champion or whatever, but… I don't know. Feels like it could be worth a shot."
Ashley tilts her head, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Huh. Look at you, Mr. 'Pokémon Are For Kids,' getting all sentimental. I never thought I'd see the day."
Jeremiah grins, his confidence returning. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. But don't act like you're not impressed. I bet I'll make a better trainer than both of you combined."
Davey laughs, a sharp sound of disbelief. "You? Better than me? I've been training since I was a kid! You don't even know what type advantages are!"
Jeremiah waves him off with exaggerated nonchalance. "Details. I've got natural talent. You're about to witness a prodigy in the making."
"Oh, this is going to be fun," Ashley says, rolling her eyes but smiling. "I can't wait to see you panic the first time you have to battle a Bug-type."
Jeremiah scowls. "Why a Bug-type?"
"Because you screamed when that Wurmple crawled on your shoe last week," Davey says, barely containing his laughter.
"That thing came out of nowhere!" Jeremiah snaps, his cheeks reddening. "And it was sticky!"
"Sure," Ashley teases, nudging him with her elbow. "Totally trainer material, though."
Jeremiah glares at them both but can't help the small grin creeping across his face. "You're both the worst, you know that?"
"Yep," Davey and Ashley say in unison, sharing a grin.
The banter carries them further up the mountain trail, the heat and tension momentarily forgotten. But as the path steepens and the air grows hotter, Ashley glances back at Jeremiah, watching him cradle the egg with a kind of care she didn't think he was capable of. She can't help but feel a flicker of pride—and maybe even relief.
"Jeremiah," she says softly, drawing his attention. "For what it's worth… I think you'll be a great trainer. You've got the right attitude. Even if you're still scared of Wurmple."
Jeremiah smirks. "Thanks, Ash. And for the record? If I ever see a Wurmple again, I'm catching it. Just to prove you wrong."
Davey laughs. "Now that's something I have to see."
Chapter 33
Chapter 15 of The Mysteries of Eevee Arc
A Heated Battle at Mt. Ember! The Fight for the Flame Plate!
The path up Mt. Ember winds sharply, steam rising from cracks in the rocky ground. The heat clings to them, and the smell of sulfur burns at their noses. Davey stops under the meager shade of a jutting rock, flipping open his Pokédex, the glow from its screen faint against the sunlight. Eevee sits at his feet, its tail swishing in the ash.
"Okay," Davey says, scanning the information. "Magmar thrive near heat vents or lava pools. Most sightings are higher up, closer to the summit." He squints at the map displayed on the device. "That means we're probably still a ways off."
Jeremiah, cradling the egg in his arms, gives an exaggerated groan. "Great. So the plan is just to keep hiking until we pass out from heatstroke?"
Ashley brushes sweat from her brow, standing a little off to the side with Prinplup fanning her. "Do you have a better plan? Or is complaining all you've got to contribute?"
Jeremiah smirks. "I contribute moral support and devilishly good looks, thank you very much."
Davey rolls his eyes. "If by moral support you mean constant sarcasm, sure." He scrolls through the Pokédex again, ignoring Jeremiah's grin. "Anyway, we're looking for signs of extreme heat—like scorched ground, steam vents, or sudden shifts in temperature. That'll tell us if Magmar's nearby."
Ashley crosses her arms. "Yeah, except this whole mountain feels like a giant steam vent. How are we supposed to tell what's normal and what's Magmar?"
Davey hesitates, frowning at the Pokédex. "I don't know yet, but we have to try. This Magmar could be the next Knight Pokémon. It's too important to mess up."
Jeremiah adjusts the egg in his arms, the golden light of the volcanic terrain reflecting off its smooth surface. "Right, because stumbling around a literal volcano is the best way to find a legendary Magmar."
"Do you have to shoot down everything I say?" Davey snaps, his voice sharp.
"Only when it's a dumb idea," Jeremiah shoots back, smirking. "Which is pretty often, by the way."
Ashley steps between them, raising her hands. "Alright, can we not do this right now? I'm too hot and too tired to referee another one of your arguments." She glances at Davey, then Jeremiah. "We're here to find Magmar, not fight each other."
Davey exhales sharply, closing the Pokédex with a click. "Fine. But for the record, I know what I'm doing."
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow, his smirk unwavering. "Yeah? Because last time you said that, we ended up stuck in a cave for three hours."
"Maybe if you'd actually helped instead of sitting there eating snacks, we'd have gotten out faster!" Davey fires back, heat rising in his tone.
Ashley groans loudly. "Can we not do this? Seriously, I'll turn around and leave you both here if I have to."
"Okay, okay," Jeremiah says, backing off with a lazy grin. "No need to get violent, Mom."
Ashley narrows her eyes at him but says nothing, turning her attention to Prinplup, who chirps in agreement.
Davey huffs, then looks at Jeremiah, his expression softening slightly. "You're in a bad mood. Maybe I can help with that." He leans closer, his voice lowering into what he probably thinks is a flirtatious tone. "You know, Jer, we could make this hike a little more fun… Just the two of us?"
Jeremiah blinks, staring at him for a long moment. Then he smirks, shaking his head. "Davey, I'm carrying a giant egg up a volcano. Flirting's not exactly at the top of my priority list."
Davey's face flushes, and Ashley lets out a loud laugh, unable to help herself. "Smooth, Davey. Really smooth."
Before he can retort, a faint shout echoes through the hot, still air. The three of them freeze, their bickering forgotten as the sound grows louder—someone yelling for help.
A young woman comes sprinting around the bend of the trail, her clothes dirty and torn. She's cradling a Machop in her arms, its small body limp and covered in scorch marks. Her face is pale, streaked with sweat and ash.
"Help!" she cries, her voice breaking as she stumbles toward them. "Please, you have to help!"
Ashley runs to meet her, Prinplup at her side. "What happened? Are you hurt?"
The girl collapses to her knees, clutching Machop tightly. "It's not me—it's my Machop. We were attacked… by a Magmar." Her voice shakes, and her eyes dart between them. "It was glowing gold. I've never seen anything like it. It—it was so strong, we didn't stand a chance."
Davey's eyes widen, his heart pounding. "A glowing Magmar? Are you sure?"
The girl nods frantically, tears streaking her face. "Yes! It was like it wasn't even a normal Magmar. It was faster, stronger… it felt like it was something else entirely."
Jeremiah glances at the Machop, then at the girl. "Where did it go? Did you see which way it was heading?"
The girl points shakily up the trail. "It went further up the mountain, toward the summit. But you can't—don't go after it! It's too dangerous!"
Davey clenches his fists, determination hardening his features. "Dangerous or not, we have to find it. This is why we're here."
Ashley looks down at the injured Machop, torn. "We can't just leave her like this. If we rush off and something happens…"
"Then we deal with it," Davey says sharply. "If that Magmar is glowing gold, it's connected to the Plates. We can't let it get away."
Ashley shoots him a glare. "And what if we're not ready to face it? You don't even have a plan!"
Jeremiah groans, stepping between them. "Alright, alright, enough. Let's not turn this into a screaming match. Again."
The girl looks between them, her fear replaced by confusion. "You're really going to argue about this right now?"
Eevee growls softly at Davey's feet, as if sensing the tension, while Prinplup chirps impatiently at Ashley's side.
"Fine," Davey mutters. "We'll help her and Machop first. Then we go after Magmar."
Ashley nods curtly. "Good. Glad to see you have some common sense."
Jeremiah sighs, glancing at the girl. "You okay with us carrying you and Machop back to a safer spot? Sounds like this isn't exactly a place you want to stick around."
The girl nods, her relief evident as she hugs Machop close. "Thank you. Just… be careful. That Magmar is different."
With the girl in tow, the group moves carefully down the trail, the tension between them still simmering under the heat of the mountain.
Ashley kneels beside the girl, glancing at the injured Machop. It groans faintly, its small body trembling with pain. For a moment, Ashley hesitates, her gaze flicking to Prinplup, who lets out a concerned chirp. Then, without a word, she reaches into her jacket pocket and pulls out a small pouch.
Davey and Jeremiah exchange surprised looks.
"Ashley," Davey says, his tone laced with disbelief. "What are you doing?"
Ashley doesn't respond immediately. She unzips the pouch, pulling out a small bottle of medicine and a handful of crushed berry powder wrapped in a waxy paper. Her fingers are surprisingly steady as she mixes the powder with a bit of water from her canteen, creating a paste.
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow. "Since when do you carry medicine for Pokémon? You've never cared about this kind of stuff before."
Ashley shoots him a quick glare. "I don't not care. I just…" She pauses, her expression softening as she gently applies the paste to Machop's burns. "I guess I just remember that lesson Professor Moss gave about berries and medicine yesterday. It was the first time something in school actually caught my interest."
Ashley gives a faint smile as she works. "At first, I thought it was gonna be boring, like everything else in school. But… it wasn't."
Flashback
Ashley sits at her desk in a sunlit classroom, staring out the window at the warm afternoon sky. Her Prinplup on, back when it was still a Piplup, snoozes on its desk. Professor Moss, an older man with sharp glasses and an animated way of speaking, stands at the front of the class. He holds up a glossy chart of berries, each one labeled with colorful names: Oran, Pecha, Sitrus, Chesto.
"Now," Moss says, his voice lively, "who can tell me what makes an Oran Berry different from a Sitrus Berry in terms of healing properties?"
The usual star students raise their hands, but Ashley slouches lower in her seat, doodling in her notebook. Another boring lesson, she thinks.
Moss notices her disinterest and smiles knowingly. "Ashley," he says, pointing in her direction. "What do you think? Which berry would you choose if your Pokémon were injured in battle?"
Ashley blinks, startled that she's been called on. She sits up slowly, glancing at the chart. "Uh… I don't know. Oran, I guess?"
"Good choice!" Moss says, his enthusiasm catching her off guard. "Oran Berries are great for minor injuries—they're like a quick pick-me-up. But what if the injury's more serious? What would you do then?"
Ashley shrugs, feeling a little put on the spot. "I… I don't know. Use a potion or something?"
Moss chuckles, then pulls a small bowl of dried berries from his desk. "Potions are useful, but sometimes you're out in the field and don't have one handy. That's where berries and a little ingenuity come in."
He steps closer, placing a dried Oran Berry on her desk, along with a small pestle and mortar. "Go ahead. Crush it up and mix it with this water."
Ashley hesitates but picks up the tools, crushing the berry into a fine powder. She pours in the water, watching as it turns into a vibrant blue paste.
"That," Moss says, pointing at her work, "is a simple salve for burns. Easy to make, and just as effective as a store-bought item. You see, Ashley, Pokémon medicine isn't just about science—it's about creativity, resourcefulness, and a little bit of heart."
For the first time, Ashley finds herself leaning forward, her curiosity sparked. She glances at Moss, then back at the salve in her hands. "So… you're saying I can actually make stuff like this? Just with berries?"
"Exactly," Moss replies with a grin. "Anyone can learn if they take the time to care. Even you, Ashley."
The class chuckles, but Ashley ignores them. For the rest of the lesson, she listens intently, surprising even herself.
Present
Ashley dabs the salve onto Machop's burns, her movements gentle and precise. The Pokémon stirs, letting out a low sigh as some of the tension leaves its body.
Davey watches, still stunned. "I never thought I'd see the day. Ashley the medic."
Ashley scoffs, though there's a faint smile on her lips. "Don't get used to it. I'm not signing up to be a nurse or anything. But… I don't know. That lesson stuck with me. It made me think about how much we depend on our Pokémon, and how we should know how to take care of them, you know?"
Jeremiah smirks. "Wow. An actual thoughtful answer. Who are you, and what have you done with Ashley?"
She flicks a bit of leftover salve at him, and he ducks with a laugh. "Shut up, Jer. You're next if you keep talking."
The girl holding Machop looks at Ashley with wide, grateful eyes. "Thank you… I thought he wasn't going to make it."
Ashley stands, brushing her hands off. "He'll be okay for now. Just keep him calm and let him rest."
Davey crosses his arms, grinning at her. "Remind me to never underestimate you again."
"Yeah," Ashley says with a small smirk, though there's a glimmer of pride in her eyes. "You better not."
The trio escorts the girl and her Machop down the winding path of Mt. Ember. The girl stumbles slightly, her face pale with worry, but Ashley stays close, offering a steadying hand when needed. Davey walks ahead, Eevee at his heels, scanning the landscape for any further signs of danger. Jeremiah follows at the rear, keeping a protective grip on the egg in his arms.
"Almost there," Davey calls over his shoulder, nodding toward a cluster of flat rocks near a shaded outcrop. "This spot's sheltered. You'll be safe here."
The girl sits down with a shaky sigh, clutching Machop closer. The Pokémon looks a little better, its breathing steady now thanks to Ashley's care.
"Thank you," the girl says, her voice thick with emotion. "I don't know what I would've done without you guys. That Magmar was… it wasn't normal. It just—" She shudders, her grip tightening on Machop.
Ashley crouches beside her, her tone uncharacteristically gentle. "Don't worry about it. Just stay here, keep Machop calm, and let him rest. We'll take care of that Magmar."
The girl looks up, eyes wide. "You're really going after it? It's dangerous! It was glowing—like it was on fire from the inside. And it's strong. Way stronger than any Magmar I've ever seen."
Jeremiah smirks, shifting the egg in his arms. "Sounds like fun."
Ashley shoots him a look. "You call that fun? You've got a weird idea of entertainment."
Jeremiah shrugs. "Hey, I didn't say I liked Magmar. I just think it sounds like a good challenge for you two."
Davey rolls his eyes. "Great. Thanks for the moral support, Jeremiah." He kneels down beside the girl, his tone softening. "Seriously, though, don't worry. We've handled tough situations before. And besides, we can't just let a Pokémon like that roam around causing chaos."
The girl hesitates, then nods. "Okay… Just be careful. It was heading toward the volcano's crater when it attacked us."
Davey stands, brushing dirt off his hands. "Got it. That gives us a direction to start with."
Eevee tugs lightly at Davey's pant leg, its ears twitching. He glances down and smiles. "Don't worry, buddy. We've got this."
Ashley straightens up, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "All right, let's get moving before it decides to double back."
Jeremiah stretches his arms, careful not to jostle the egg. "Guess I'm coming too. Someone's gotta make sure you two don't get roasted."
"Gee, thanks," Ashley mutters. "So reassuring."
As they turn to head back up the trail, Davey pauses and looks at the girl one last time. "If you see anyone else, let them know to stay away from the crater. And… thanks for the warning."
The girl nods, her gaze following them as they disappear into the rocky terrain.
Back on the Path
The trail grows steeper as they ascend, the air hot and dry, the volcanic heat radiating off the rocks around them. Eevee hops nimbly over jagged stones, its ears twitching with alertness.
"So, any brilliant ideas on how to actually find this glowing Magmar?" Ashley asks, wiping sweat from her brow.
Davey pulls out his Pokédex, thumbing through its entries. "Magmar are drawn to heat and flames. If this one's stronger than usual, it's probably staying near the most active part of the volcano."
Jeremiah peers over his shoulder. "That's your big plan? 'Follow the fire'?"
Davey frowns. "Do you have a better idea?"
Jeremiah smirks. "Nope. Just thought it was funny how obvious it sounds."
Ashley groans, pushing ahead. "Can you two stop bickering for five minutes? We've got a job to do."
Davey quickens his pace to catch up with her. "I'm not bickering. I'm strategizing."
"Strategizing," Jeremiah echoes with a laugh. "That's a new word for it."
Ashley sighs, rubbing her temples. "I swear, if you two don't get it together, I'm leaving you both here."
Eevee barks, seemingly scolding all of them, which only makes Davey laugh. "Even Eevee thinks you're overreacting, Ashley."
Ashley spins around, glaring. "I am not overreacting! We're tracking a glowing, super-powered Magmar up an active volcano, and you two are cracking jokes!"
Jeremiah raises his hands in mock surrender. "All right, all right. No more jokes. Let's just focus."
Davey smirks, leaning closer to Jeremiah as they walk. "You know, I like it when you're the voice of reason. It's kinda cute."
Jeremiah gives him a flat look. "Davey, not the time."
"Come on," Davey teases, nudging him lightly. "A little flirting never hurt anyone."
Ashley groans loudly. "Oh, for the love of—can we please stay on topic?"
Before either of them can respond, Eevee's ears perk up, and it growls softly. Moments later, a faint rumbling sound echoes from further up the trail.
"Did you hear that?" Davey asks, his playful tone vanishing.
Ashley nods, her hand hovering near Prinplup's Pokéball. "Yeah. That can't be good."
They round a bend in the trail and freeze. The path ahead is scorched, the rocks blackened and cracked. Small flickers of flame dance along the edges, as if the ground itself is smoldering.
Jeremiah whistles low. "Looks like we're heading in the right direction."
Ashley pulls out Prinplup's Pokéball, her expression grim. "Let's just hope we can handle whatever's waiting for us at the end of this."
Davey exchanges a glance with Eevee, determination flashing in his eyes. "We've got this. Let's go."

Davey exchanges a glance with Eevee, determination flashing in his eyes. "We've got this. Let's go."
The battle rages on at the peak of Mt. Ember, the air around Ashley and Magmar rippling with heat and tension. Despite the pressure, Ashley keeps her focus sharp, drawing on lessons from past battles. She remembers her defeat against Chili's fire-type Pokémon, the reckless overconfidence that cost her the match. She recalls watching Rose take on Flannery, studying the way Rose exploited openings with precision and used unorthodox strategies to keep her opponent on the defensive.
Ashley clenches her fists. This time, I'm not losing because I wasn't thinking ahead.
Magmar roars, flames spiraling around its body like a fiery shield. It charges forward with a glowing fist, its signature Fire Punch aimed directly at Prinplup.
"Prinplup, dodge and counter with Bubblebeam!" Ashley calls.
Prinplup leaps aside with agility, the fiery attack narrowly missing. As it lands, it spins around and unleashes a torrent of shimmering bubbles, the attack hissing as it strikes Magmar's fiery aura. Steam erupts, momentarily obscuring the battlefield.
Davey squints through the haze. "That was a solid hit! Keep it up, Ashley!"
Jeremiah crosses his arms, watching closely. "She's holding her own, but that Magmar's not slowing down."
Magmar bursts through the steam, its body glowing even brighter. It slams the ground with a fist, sending a wave of flames rippling toward Prinplup.
Ashley reacts immediately. "Jump, Prinplup! Use Drill Peck from above!"
Prinplup propels itself into the air, its beak glowing as it dives toward Magmar with incredible speed. The attack connects, sending Magmar skidding backward.
Ashley clenches her fist. "Yes! Keep it on the ropes!"
But Magmar recovers quickly, its golden glow intensifying as it stomps the ground. Lava seeps from the cracks beneath its feet, and with a mighty roar, it fires a devastating Flamethrower directly at Prinplup.
"Metal Claw, block it!" Ashley shouts.
Prinplup's flippers glow with silvery light as it crosses them in front of its body, absorbing most of the fiery blast. However, the force sends Prinplup sliding backward, its footing unsteady.
Magmar takes advantage of the opening. With surprising speed, it closes the distance and delivers a point-blank Fire Punch. The attack lands squarely, and Prinplup cries out as it's thrown across the battlefield.
"Prinplup!" Ashley yells, her voice full of concern.
Prinplup struggles to rise, its body battered and its breaths labored. Ashley bites her lip, debating whether to push forward.
Magmar stands tall, flames crackling around it, clearly ready to end the fight.
Davey steps forward, his tone urgent. "Ashley, call it back! Prinplup's done all it can. You've got other Pokémon."
Ashley hesitates, her hands trembling. She doesn't want to give up, but Prinplup looks at her and lets out a weak cry, as if giving her permission to let it rest.
Reluctantly, she recalls Prinplup. "You did amazing," she murmurs, gripping the Pokéball tightly.
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow. "Now what? That thing's on a whole other level."
Davey nudges Ashley gently. "Use Zorua. Its Illusion ability could give you the edge you need."
Ashley looks at him, unsure. "You think it's enough?"
Davey nods. "I know it is. You've seen what Zorua can do. Trust it."
Ashley exhales, her confidence returning. She pulls out Zorua's Pokéball and tosses it into the air. "All right, Zorua, it's your turn!"
The tiny fox Pokémon materializes in a flash of light, landing lightly on its feet. It glances back at Ashley with a mischievous grin, ready to prove itself.
"Zorua," Ashley says firmly, "we're up against something tough, but we've got a plan. Let's show it what we can do."
Magmar roars again, its fiery aura flaring even brighter as it prepares for the next phase of the battle.
Ashley points at the glowing Magmar, determination blazing in her eyes. "Zorua, let's start with Illusion! Keep it guessing!"
Zorua's form begins to shimmer, and within moments, it takes on the appearance of Prinplup, perfectly mimicking its stance and expression. Magmar snarls, clearly confused but still determined to fight.
Ashley smirks. "Let's see how you handle a little trickery."
The battle resumes, tension crackling in the air like static. Zorua, still disguised as Prinplup, crouches low, its eyes locked on Magmar. The fiery Pokémon snarls, its glowing body radiating heat that distorts the air around it.
"Keep it guessing, Zorua!" Ashley calls, her voice sharp and focused. "Use Aerial Ace! Close the gap!"
Zorua launches forward, moving with the speed and precision of a seasoned fighter. Its illusion as Prinplup is so convincing that even Davey's eyes widen.
"Looks real enough to me," he mutters.
Magmar braces itself as Zorua's attack connects, striking its golden chest. The impact sends Magmar skidding back slightly, but it quickly regains its footing, its fiery aura flaring in anger.
"Again! Stay on the move!" Ashley commands.
Zorua feints to the left, its illusory flippers glowing as it mimics Metal Claw, slashing at Magmar. The blow lands, and Magmar growls in frustration.
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow. "This might actually work. That thing's thrown off."
Davey shakes his head. "Not for long. Magmar's smart—watch."
Magmar narrows its eyes, observing Zorua carefully. It suddenly lunges forward, its fiery claws swiping not at the illusion, but at the air around it. The golden flames ripple, and Zorua's disguise shatters like glass, revealing its true form.
Zorua stumbles back, its wide eyes betraying its surprise.
Ashley grits her teeth. "It's okay, Zorua! We've still got this! Use Night Daze! Hit it hard!"
Zorua howls, summoning a swirling wave of dark energy that crashes into Magmar. The attack momentarily dims Magmar's glow, forcing it to stumble.
But the fiery Pokémon retaliates with an explosive Flamethrower. The blast engulfs Zorua, and when the flames clear, the small fox collapses, unable to continue.
"Zorua!" Ashley cries, rushing forward to recall it. She bites her lip, frustration bubbling inside her.
Magmar stands tall, its body glowing even brighter now, its fiery aura making it look invincible.
"What now?" Jeremiah asks, his tone skeptical. "Your Pokémon are getting roasted out here."
Ashley ignores him, reaching for another Pokéball. Her hand hovers over it for a moment before she grabs Deerling's ball.
Davey notices and looks alarmed. "Ashley, no! You can't send out Deerling—it's a Grass-type! That's suicide!"
Jeremiah shakes his head. "Yeah, what's the plan? Roast marshmallows?"
Ashley glares at them both. "I don't care. I trust Deerling. And I'm not giving up just because the odds aren't in my favor."
She hurls the Pokéball into the air. "Deerling, let's go!"
The small fawn Pokémon appears in a burst of light, its pink coat shimmering against the fiery backdrop of the battlefield. It stamps its hoof confidently, ready to fight.
Magmar freezes. Its fiery aura flickers, and its intense gaze softens as a memory floods its mind.
Flashback
Years ago, deep within the same mountains, a younger Magmar stood by the side of its trainer, Shaun. The teenager had an air of unshakable confidence, with tousled hair and a sharp smirk. Shaun's clothes were tattered but functional, a mix of streetwear and practicality. His wit was as quick as his reflexes, and he always seemed to have a plan, even if no one else could see it.
"Magmar, trust me," Shaun said, arms crossed as he studied the opponent in front of him: a towering Golem. The trainer on the other side of the battlefield laughed.
"You're crazy, kid! Sending out a Fire-type against a Rock-type? That thing's going down in one hit!"
Shaun grinned, cocky but calculated. "Maybe. Or maybe you're underestimating us. Magmar, hit it with Smokescreen! Let's get creative!"
Magmar roared, releasing a thick cloud of black smoke that enveloped the battlefield. The Golem grunted, disoriented.
"Now, Confuse Ray! Keep it spinning!" Shaun shouted.
Magmar's eyes glowed as it released a disorienting beam that struck Golem, causing it to stumble and lash out wildly.
"See?" Shaun said, his tone almost playful. "It's not about power. It's about thinking ten steps ahead."
The opposing trainer growled. "You're just lucky—"
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever makes you feel better," Shaun cut him off, smirking. "Magmar, Fire Punch! Wrap this up!"
Magmar charged through the smoke, its glowing fist connecting with Golem in a burst of flames. The Rock-type collapsed, defeated.
Shaun knelt beside Magmar, giving it a proud pat on the head. "See? It's not about what they expect you to do. It's about what they don't see coming. And that's what makes us unstoppable."
Back in the Present
Magmar's fiery aura flickers again as it stares at Deerling. The sight of the small, seemingly fragile Pokémon brings back the memory of Shaun's unorthodox strategies and unshakable faith. Magmar tilts its head, almost as if seeing Shaun in Ashley.
Ashley notices the hesitation but doesn't let it distract her. "Deerling, start with Double Kick! Keep it moving!"
Deerling charges forward, its hooves glowing as it lands two sharp kicks against Magmar's legs. The fire-type stumbles slightly, still caught in the haze of its memory.
Jeremiah raises an eyebrow. "Is it… holding back?"
Davey shakes his head. "No. It's just confused. Ashley's actually getting to it."
Ashley clenches her fists. "Deerling, keep going! We've got this!"
Magmar shakes its head, snapping out of its daze. Its fiery glow surges again, and it lets out a deafening roar, ready to test if this trainer is as resourceful as the one it once knew.

Magmar shakes its head, snapping out of its daze. Its fiery glow surges again, and it lets out a deafening roar, ready to test if this trainer is as resourceful as the one it once knew.
The battle between Deerling and Magmar intensifies, the heat of the flames scorching the air around them. Magmar's fiery aura flares with renewed intensity, but Deerling stands firm, determined not to falter despite the overwhelming odds.
Ashley clenches her fists. "Deerling, use Energy Ball! Keep your distance!"
Deerling leaps back, summoning a vibrant green orb of energy that crackles with life. It hurls the attack at Magmar, striking it square in the chest. The impact causes Magmar to stagger slightly, but it quickly regains its footing, its golden glow flickering with renewed fury.
Magmar snarls and charges forward, flames coiling around its body as it prepares a devastating Fire Punch.
"Dodge it, Deerling!" Ashley shouts.
Deerling leaps to the side, narrowly avoiding the fiery fist. The ground where Magmar's attack lands scorches black, smoke rising into the air.
"Good! Now hit it with Double Kick!" Ashley commands.
Deerling darts in, its hooves glowing as it delivers two sharp kicks to Magmar's legs. The fire-type grunts in pain and stumbles slightly, but it retaliates with a blast of Flamethrower, catching Deerling mid-movement.
"Deerling, no!" Ashley cries as the flames engulf her Pokémon.
Deerling lands hard, its body battered and smoking from the intense heat. It struggles to stand, its legs trembling, but it refuses to back down.
Davey steps forward, his voice urgent. "Ashley, call it back! Deerling can't take much more!"
Jeremiah crosses his arms, shaking his head. "This is insane. It's a Grass-type—it's not built for this."
Ashley turns to them, her eyes blazing. "You don't get it! Deerling's not giving up, and neither am I. We're in this together."
Magmar watches Deerling rise, its fiery gaze flickering with a hint of respect. It roars, flames spiraling around it as it charges up another Fire Punch.
Ashley grits her teeth. "Deerling, use Aromatherapy! Heal yourself!"
Deerling releases a soothing, fragrant mist that surrounds it, momentarily easing its injuries. It straightens up, determination shining in its eyes.
Magmar charges forward, its glowing fist aimed directly at Deerling.
Ashley shouts, "Tackle! Meet it head-on!"
Deerling charges as well, its small frame colliding with Magmar's fiery punch. The impact sends both Pokémon skidding back, Deerling visibly struggling to stay on its feet.
Magmar roars again, summoning a swirling vortex of flames for a powerful Flamethrower. The attack engulfs Deerling, and when the flames dissipate, the Grass-type collapses to the ground, motionless.
Ashley's breath catches in her throat. "Deerling…"
The battlefield grows quiet, the only sound the crackling of Magmar's flames. Davey and Jeremiah exchange worried glances.
Suddenly, a faint glow begins to emanate from Deerling's body. Its eyes snap open, and it lets out a determined cry, its voice echoing across the peak.
Ashley steps back in shock. "What's happening?"
Deerling's body is engulfed in a brilliant light, its form shifting and growing. The glow intensifies, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.
Magmar pauses, its fiery aura dimming slightly as it watches with wide eyes.
When the light fades, a majestic Sawsbuck stands in Deerling's place. Its antlers are adorned with blooming flowers, and its eyes burn with the same fierce determination as before. Sawsbuck stomps its hooves, releasing a wave of energy that shakes the ground beneath it.
Ashley stares in awe. "Deerling… no, Sawsbuck… you evolved."
Sawsbuck lets out a triumphant cry, lowering its antlers as it locks eyes with Magmar. Despite its injuries, it radiates newfound strength, ready to continue the fight.
Ashley clenches her fists, her determination reigniting. "Let's finish this together, Sawsbuck!"
Magmar growls, flames reigniting around it as the battle reaches its final stage.
The tension is palpable as Sawsbuck and Magmar square off, the battlefield still crackling with the remnants of their earlier clash. Sawsbuck lowers its antlers, the vibrant blossoms on its head shimmering with an ethereal glow. Magmar's golden flames flare up in response, refusing to yield.
Ashley steps forward, her voice clear and unwavering. "Sawsbuck, let's show them what we can do! Start with Energy Ball!"
Sawsbuck rears back, summoning a vibrant green orb of energy between its antlers. It hurls the attack at Magmar with precision, the orb crackling as it hurtles through the air.
Magmar roars, meeting the attack head-on with a fiery Flamethrower. The two moves collide in a burst of light, the resulting shockwave rippling across the mountaintop.
Jeremiah shields his face from the blast. "This is nuts! That thing is a monster!"
Davey clenches his fists. "Come on, Ashley. You've got this!"
Magmar lunges forward, its fist glowing with flames as it charges a devastating Fire Punch.
Ashley narrows her eyes. "Sawsbuck, dodge it and use Horn Leech! Get in close!"
With a graceful leap, Sawsbuck avoids Magmar's fiery strike, landing deftly behind the blazing Pokémon. Its antlers glow with green energy as it charges forward, slamming into Magmar and draining its strength.
Magmar staggers, its flames flickering as its energy is sapped. It growls in frustration, retaliating with a close-range Flamethrower that engulfs Sawsbuck.
"Sawsbuck!" Ashley cries, her heart pounding.
Emerging from the flames, Sawsbuck stumbles but remains standing, its eyes blazing with determination. It shakes off the smoke and plants its hooves firmly into the ground.
Ashley takes a deep breath. "We're not done yet. Sawsbuck, use Giga Impact! Give it everything you've got!"
Sawsbuck lowers its head, its entire body glowing with a brilliant silver aura as it charges forward with incredible speed. The ground trembles beneath its powerful strides as it slams into Magmar with earth-shaking force.
The impact sends Magmar flying backward, crashing into a nearby boulder. For a moment, the golden flames around it waver, but it pushes itself back to its feet, roaring defiantly.
Ashley grits her teeth. "It's still standing? Fine. Sawsbuck, finish it with another Horn Leech!"
Sawsbuck charges again, its antlers glowing brightly. Magmar braces itself, its fiery aura reigniting as it prepares one final Fire Punch. The two Pokémon collide, the energy from their attacks clashing in a blinding explosion of light and heat.
When the smoke clears, Sawsbuck stands tall, its antlers gleaming as it breathes heavily. Magmar collapses to its knees, the golden flames around it dimming until they vanish completely.
Ashley stares in disbelief, her heart racing. "We… we did it."
Davey blinks, stunned. "You actually beat it. That's the first time a Knight Pokémon has ever been defeated."
Jeremiah lets out a low whistle. "Well, I'll be. Guess you're full of surprises, Ashley."
Magmar looks up at Sawsbuck, its fiery eyes softening. Despite its defeat, there's no anger in its expression—only respect. It lowers its head slightly, acknowledging Ashley and her Pokémon's strength.
Ashley takes a step forward, her voice steady. "Magmar… I don't know why you're here or why you're glowing, but if you'll let us, we'll figure this out together."
Magmar lets out a soft rumble, its body relaxing as the tension in the air dissipates. For the first time, the blazing heat of the mountaintop feels calm.
As the dust settles, Magmar slowly rises to its feet, its golden flames dim but flickering steadily. It stands tall, a mixture of exhaustion and pride in its stance. Its fiery eyes meet Ashley's, no longer blazing with anger but instead filled with a quiet, respectful intensity.
Ashley takes a cautious step forward, Sawsbuck standing protectively beside her. "Magmar, that was incredible," she says, her voice steady despite her nerves. "You're an amazing fighter, and that battle… that's something I'll never forget."
Magmar lets out a low growl, glancing away as if embarrassed by the praise.
Davey steps up beside her, his Eevee perched on his shoulder. "It wasn't just the battle, though, was it? Magmar wasn't just angry at us. It's been carrying something—something heavy."
Magmar stiffens slightly at Davey's words, its fiery tail swaying uneasily.
Before anyone can say more, the golden glow that surrounded Ashley during the battle begins to return. It envelops her, Eevee, and Magmar, pulsing with warmth and energy.
"What now?" Jeremiah mutters, shielding his eyes from the light.
Ashley squints against the brilliance, a strange but comforting sensation coursing through her. "I… I don't know. But it feels like… like something's coming."
The light grows brighter, and a figure begins to take shape between Ashley and Magmar. Slowly, it becomes clearer: a young man with a sharp jawline, a confident grin, and dark, tousled hair. His well-worn trainer's outfit speaks of countless adventures, and a single Pokéball hangs from his belt.
Davey gasps. "That's Shaun… Magmar's trainer."
Magmar freezes, its fiery eyes widening. It stares at the spectral figure, its entire body trembling with recognition.
"Hey there, partner," Shaun says softly, kneeling to meet Magmar's gaze. His voice is warm and steady, filled with affection. "It's been a while, huh?"
Magmar lets out a low, mournful cry, its flames flaring briefly before dimming again. It takes a hesitant step forward, reaching toward Shaun with trembling claws.
Shaun smiles gently, his ghostly form flickering slightly as he places a hand near Magmar's shoulder. "I missed you too," he says, his voice tinged with sadness. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here when you needed me."
Magmar growls softly, lowering its head as if trying to hide its emotions.
Shaun straightens, turning to Ashley with a grin. "And you… you've got some serious guts, kid. Remind me of someone I used to know."
Ashley blinks, startled. "Me? I just… I just did what I had to do."
Shaun chuckles, shaking his head. "It's more than that. That brashness, that determination, that fire in your heart—it's familiar. And trust me, it's a good thing."
Ashley shifts awkwardly, unsure of how to respond.
"Listen," Shaun continues, stepping closer to her. "What you did here today wasn't just about strength. You showed heart, creativity, and trust in your Pokémon. That's what makes a great trainer."
Ashley straightens, meeting his gaze. "I just… believed in them. That's all."
Shaun nods approvingly. "And they believed in you. That's how you win battles that matter."
He raises his hand, and from the golden light surrounding him, a shimmering plate materializes. Its fiery patterns seem to flicker and dance, radiating a comforting warmth.
"This," Shaun says, holding out the Flame Plate, "belongs to you now. You earned it."
The plate floats gently toward Ashley, and she reaches out to take it. The moment her fingers touch the surface, a wave of heat pulses through her—not burning, but invigorating, filling her with a newfound strength.
Shaun steps back, turning once more to Magmar. His expression softens, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Take care of yourself, partner. I'll always be with you, watching over you."
Magmar lets out a deep rumble, its flames flaring brighter for a moment as if to acknowledge Shaun's words.
Shaun turns back to Ashley and her friends, his form beginning to fade. "You've got what it takes to go far, Ashley. Keep that fire burning bright. The world's going to need it."
With those final words, Shaun's image disappears, the golden light fading with him. The mountaintop is quiet once more, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun.
Ashley looks down at the Flame Plate in her hands, the warmth of it a steady reminder of what she's accomplished.
"Well," Davey says, breaking the silence with a grin, "that was… intense."
Jeremiah whistles low. "No kidding. You've got a knack for making history, Ashley."
Ashley smirks, brushing a hand through her hair. "What can I say? Guess I've got a thing for dramatic exits."
The group chuckles, the tension from the battle melting away as they prepare for the next leg of their journey. Ashley gives one last look at the glowing volcano behind them, silently thanking Shaun and Magmar before turning to follow her friends down the mountain.
Castelia City, Unova
The bustling sounds of Castelia City hum in the background as Ashley, Davey, and Jeremiah take a well-earned break in one of the city's expansive parks. The warm afternoon sun shines down on them, offering a brief respite after their intense journey to Mt. Ember.
Ashley lounges against a tree, twirling the Flame Plate between her fingers. "So, we've got four plates now—Blank, Meadow, Splash, and Flame. But still no answers."
Davey, sitting cross-legged on the grass with Eevee curled up in his lap, looks thoughtful. "Yeah, the Arc Phone didn't do anything when we found the Flame Plate. No glowing, no reactions. Just… nothing."
Jeremiah, lying on his stomach with his chin propped up in his hands, raises an eyebrow. "Maybe it's because Shaun just gave it to you. You didn't actually find it, right?"
Ashley shrugs. "Maybe. But that doesn't explain why the Arc Phone worked for the other plates."
Davey tilts his head. "It's true. The Flame Plate should have triggered a reaction, but it didn't. I don't get it."
Jeremiah sits up, rubbing his eyes. "Maybe it's not about how we get the plates, but why we get them. Maybe they only react when there's a trial or challenge. Or maybe it has something to do with… I don't know, the Pokémon we're around."
That's when Davey's expression shifts. He looks down at Eevee, who's still lounging comfortably in his lap. "That's actually a good point," Davey says. "Every time we've been near a Knight Pokémon, Eevee starts glowing. First with Lurantis, then with Magmar…"
Ashley nods. "Yeah, it's like Eevee's reacting to something. It's not just a coincidence."
Jeremiah looks at them both, arms folded. "It's not just a coincidence. I've been thinking about it. Every time Eevee glows, it's near a Knight Pokémon. And we already know that Eevee's some kind of vessel for all types of Pokémon. Maybe it's connected to them somehow."
Ashley raises an eyebrow. "So you think Eevee is reacting to the Knight Pokémon because it's a vessel of all Pokémon types?"
Davey nods. "Exactly. We know Eevee can evolve into all these different forms, right? What if it's more than that? What if Eevee is a conduit for all Pokémon types? It could be why it's reacting to these Pokémon in such a way."
Jeremiah rubs his chin thoughtfully. "If Eevee's some kind of vessel for every type, then it would make sense for it to react to the Knight Pokémon. They're special, and Eevee is special, too."
Ashley looks at Eevee, who lazily blinks up at her. "That's a lot of pressure for one little Pokémon. But then again, I've always thought Eevee was more than it seemed."
Davey chuckles, gently petting Eevee's head. "Yeah, it's like Eevee's got a secret. It's kind of wild to think about, but at the same time, it feels right."
Jeremiah grins. "Well, whatever it is, Eevee's definitely got a part to play in this whole mess. We'll just have to figure out what that is later."
Ashley stretches, glancing down at her phone for the time. "Right now, though, we've got other things to focus on. We still don't know what's going on with the Arc Phone, and we're missing a lot of pieces to this puzzle."
Davey sighs, clearly still lost in thought. "I know. But it feels like we're getting closer to something, right? I mean, these plates have to mean something more than just some random artifacts."
Before they can continue the conversation, a soft glow catches Davey's eye. "Hold up," he says, pointing to Jeremiah's portable incubator. "Jeremiah, your egg's glowing."
Jeremiah's head jerks toward the incubator, his eyes widening. "What? No way!" He quickly grabs the incubator and opens it carefully, revealing the egg pulsing with golden light.
Ashley leans forward, wide-eyed. "It's happening! It's hatching!"
Jeremiah holds the egg carefully in his hands, watching the glow intensify before slowly dimming. The light swirls and shifts, the egg cracking open in the center. For a moment, the glow is blinding, but then it fades, revealing a small, trembling Rockruff.
The little Pokémon blinks up at them with wide eyes before letting out a loud, wailing cry.
Kimberly stepped into the principal's office, her footfalls light and deliberate on the polished floor. Her Pokémon partner, Toedscuel, followed closely behind, its mushroom-like form almost camouflaging against the dark wood of the office.
Damon stood by the window, his back to her, staring out across the school courtyard, where students were scattered in small groups, chatting and laughing. He didn't turn as Kimberly entered, nor did he acknowledge her presence immediately. There was a certain coolness to him, a kind of distance that was hard to break.
"Kimberly," Damon said without turning around. His voice was calm, measured, and had an almost weighty edge to it. "You're early."
Kimberly remained standing by the door for a moment, her gaze flickering around the room before she made her way to the desk and sat down. Toedscuel, ever attentive, perched quietly beside her.
"You wanted to speak with me?" Kimberly asked, keeping her tone neutral.
Damon paused, then let out a quiet sigh, the air around him thick with frustration. Finally, he turned around, leaning against the window frame. "It's about my son," he began, his eyes narrowing as he glanced over at her. "Davey. He's… getting distracted. More than usual. And it's because of a boy named Jeremiah. They're getting closer, and I'm starting to see things slip."
Kimberly tilted her head slightly, studying Damon's face, taking in his words carefully. She knew of Davey's relationship with Jeremiah, but the fact that it was affecting Damon, that it was really bothering him, wasn't something she'd expected.
"And what's the problem?" Kimberly asked, her voice laced with curiosity but also the faintest trace of amusement.
Damon's jaw tightened, his gaze hardening as he continued. "Jeremiah's become a distraction. I don't care much about his background, but my son is losing focus. He's not the same. I've seen it. It's subtle, but it's there. And it's taking my son away from what really matters. Eevee… has been getting all the attention for so long, but if Davey keeps falling for this boy, if his attention shifts even more, we could lose everything. Eevee could slip from our grasp. I can't let that happen."
Kimberly's lips curled into a small, knowing smile. "So you want Jeremiah out of the picture, I take it?"
Damon's expression was cold, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of something—frustration, maybe regret. "If something were to happen to Jeremiah, then Davey's focus would shift back to what really matters: his connection with Eevee. He wouldn't have anything else to distract him." He took a deep breath, his posture stiffening as he moved to sit behind his desk. Delcatty, his ever-present companion, jumped onto his lap, curling up there contentedly.
Kimberly's smile didn't falter, though her gaze sharpened as she spoke again. "So, you're suggesting that Jeremiah needs to be… taken out of the picture entirely." She leaned in, her voice dropping to a near-whisper. "You want him out of the equation, permanently."
Damon's eyes didn't flinch as he met her gaze. "Yes. I'm not interested in him being part of Davey's world any longer. Not if he's causing him to lose focus." His fingers absently stroked Delcatty's fur, but his mind seemed far away. "The longer this goes on, the greater the risk that Eevee could slip through our fingers. It's more than a distraction; it's a threat."
Kimberly nodded slowly, her mind already working through the possibilities. She knew what Damon was suggesting, even without saying it outright. "If something were to happen to Jeremiah… Davey would have no choice but to take his attention off Eevee."
Damon gave a slight nod. "Exactly. And I'm certain that Davey would refocus quickly if Jeremiah were no longer around to distract him."
The air in the room grew heavier as the plan started to take shape, unspoken between them but understood all the same. Kimberly sat back in her chair, her eyes narrowed as she thought. "I can handle it," she said quietly, her voice carrying a cool confidence.
Damon's expression softened, though his eyes still held that calculating edge. "Good. I knew you'd be the right person for the job. I don't care how you do it, just make sure no one traces it back. No one can know what's really going on."
Kimberly's gaze darkened, her lips curling into a faint smile. "Don't worry about that. I'll make sure everything goes according to plan. No mistakes." She stood, her movements fluid and deliberate.
Damon leaned back in his chair, watching her carefully. "I trust you'll keep me updated on the progress?"
"Of course," Kimberly said smoothly, giving him a nod. "You'll know when everything's been handled."
As she moved toward the door, Damon's voice stopped her.
"One more thing, Kimberly." His tone was almost casual, but there was an edge to it. "Make sure this gets done quickly. The longer Davey's distracted, the more difficult it'll be to get him back on track. We don't have time for anything to go wrong."
Kimberly gave a small, amused smile, her hand on the doorknob. "Don't worry. I'll make sure everything falls into place. Just like you asked."
She left the office with a final, knowing glance over her shoulder. The door clicked shut softly behind her, and the silence that followed felt as thick as the plans now in motion. Toedscuel, ever watchful, walked silently beside her.
As they left the building, the world outside felt unchanged—students chatting, the day moving on. But within the walls of the principal's office, the game had already begun.
