Doing paperwork as a teacher can be tough, especially when the school you are part of is meant to produce the finest ninja this side of the world.
Education was the bedrock of great shinobi and kunoichi, but a single mistake can easily lead to some issues. Picking up on potential troublemakers, and I mean those that may have some mental disorders, was something that had become quite important in regards to the village's safety and reputation.
I had to weed out a lot of people, most of which had some ridiculous backings from rich civilian merchants and other politicians.
The peace may have been a boon for the economy, but it sure fattened the bellies of some unpleasant individuals in the process. Despite the notorious chances of missing on some elements, the system was so deep that it was impossible for any of those to make it to graduation.
Hence why, from time to time, I would leave the business to a Shadow Clone.
Not always, not all the time.
I just needed to do more stuff as a teacher which demanded my full attention.
One of those involved not a proper student of mine but someone that had asked for my assistance when it comes to... well, learning some family technique.
The name Sarutobi holds a massive relevance in the village.
Some may even say that people were extremely fond of the Third Hokage, but also his son, Asuma. Both men died to save Konoha, and both men were revered as heroes.
A 'homage' to the latter figure was the youngest Sarutobi, Mirai.
I had coached Mirai when she was just a genin. The girl had her mother's hair and eyes, but she had Asuma-sensei's smile and confidence to blend in just perfectly.
The girl was also a jack of trades when it comes to her abilities. A master in Genjutsu despite being 17 (and by Master, I mean enough to match her mother in her prime and beat that), she was also known to wield her father's famous Flying Swallow technique which boosted speed, reach and penetrative abilities of bladed tools.
The girls was both a Genjutsu and a Kenjutsu prodigy. Yet... she was fine with anonymity.
If I had to guess, especially since I never asked out of courtesy towards the girl's family, I think it has to do with her not wanting to be haunted by her Clan's achievements. She was good, and she was definitely setting herself up to beat many records, but she struggled with self-confidence over her abilities.
Hence why I was there, always there to be nagged about some 'adult visioning' to see if she could get a skill done right. And she did.
"Mirai-kohai, you are a brilliant kunoichi. Stop dragging me around as if you can't do those things on your own."
She would pout, red eyes burning with a degree of embarrassment and childishness that reminded me the first time I helped her around at the academy.
"I-I know, it's just... It's been a while since we last talked."
A predictable situation, which still had me smiling.
"You know you can ask me to speak in private without dragging me in a desolate training ground at night."
She huffed.
"W-Well, you are difficult to reach out beyond training. It's not even like I can do much with Hanabi-senpai being territorial over you."
Ah. Right. I forgot Hanabi was now getting comfy over the idea of warding me off from other girls.
"I will have a word with her," I promised flatly, but Mirai... looked a bit upset. "Isn't that enough?"
"It is but... Sensei, you know- I have been asking... why did you decide to go out with Hanabi-senpai now after so long?"
...
"I hope this is not a build-up to 'I kind of liked you for a time', Mirai."
I saw her tense up, and I sighed.
"I appreciate the care, Kohai. but I remind you that there is a reason why I don't date-"
"Until now," She huffed, angry and yet annoyed. "L-Like, why now?"
"She made a compelling case."
"...Which is?" The red-eyed girl inquired and I sighed, deciding to indulge her curiosity.
"The fact that I am not alright," I hummed bitterly. "The fact that I am flawed on multiple level that can make people displeased once they are close enough to know. I make people miserable if I let go of what little restraint I have."
...
"Are you violent?"
I frowned.
"I-I am just... trying to get you, senpai," Mirai argued quietly, looking away for a moment. "It's just... you always looked like a role model. I can't see you any other way."
"That's because you know 'Tatsuno-senpai'. Trust me when I say that Hanabi is already regretting my 'surrender'."
Mirai perked up. "Do you think she will give up on you?"
"You are asking me if a girl that stuck to me for more than a decade to give up on 'silly things'? Have some more faith in your senpai's stubbornness."
Mirai rolled her eyes, but I poked at her nose.
"Still, I wish to use this chance to ask you something. If it is possible."
Tensing up, the Chuunin nodded. "S-Sure, what about?"
"I am sure you are familiar with Sumire, yes?"
She nodded, smiling fondly. "Yeah, she is the sweetest girl."
"I am glad to hear that. But I wish for you to beware she will have an important role in the future. And I expect your aid when the time comes."
Mirai frowned as I handed her a scroll.
"Is this a... secret clan technique?"
"No. Notes," I remarked calmly. "Only those that are training in my specific skill can use it. Sumire is the only one that can complete it."
"Oh... and why is this needed for her?"
"Stuff going to get interesting. Something is going to happen- people that are not going to be fun to deal with."
"...I see. Does the hokage-"
"Yes."
Mirai nodded, she offered a serious look. "I will make sure she gets it when the 'time is right'."
I chuckled. "I don't sound like that, don't I?"
She smugly grinned at that and we shared a laugh.
How pleasant it is for us to enjoy this last moment of genuine peace. Then the aliens struck...
