"I cannot believe that I won a new surfing trophy!" a female teenage voice said from the backseat of the car.
"Don't act so humble, you know that you're a pro", a mother responded from the front seat as the dad was watching the road.
"But this was a higher league. The competition was much tougher. I was worry the rain would get too bad too. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as forecasts said", the teenager said elated.
"You are very lucky Nani", the mother replied.
"We seem less lucky now dear. The storm is getting worse and the roads is becoming muddy", the father said as she was trying to keep the car on a straight path.
"Maybe we should pullover somewhere and wait out the storm Ikaika?" the mother suggested.
"Good idea Malia, I will look for a gas station or something similar", Ikaika replied.
"Wait, this trophy seems to be real gold. Not just god-plated!" Nani yelled excited.
"Really? That's great honey." Malia said.
"I can't wait to show it too Lilo."
"She was soooo upset that she couldn't stay up to come with you, but next year she might be just old enough", Malia said.
"That would be so cool. Next year I might partake in an international competition. W might get to go on a vacation to like Australia or Florida. We could become famous. I think Lilo might have surfing instincts too."
"Indeed she doe… aww!" Ikaika yelled as he dodged a car the came their way out of nowhere.
"Are you aright dad?!" Nani yelled.
"Yes, I missed hi… but I went a bit of the roa… of no!"
The car started to slide of a muddy hill through some bushes as Ikaika tried to frantically push the breaks and dotched several trees. "Nina please move back as far as you can, Malia I need your help!" he yelled when suddenly the car got hit by a falling tree.
Nani screamed and ducked as pieces of glass flew her way. Her ears were ringing. The car had come to a complete halt. "Mom! Dad!" she yelled as she tried to get up. She had some cuts of her arm and one cheek but her eyes, nose and legs felt fine. She realized her neck and stomach were alright too. She tried to reach for her parents but the front part of the car had complete caved in. Metal and wood obstructed her. "Mom! Dad! Ae you okay?" she yelled. She received no response.
She tried to move the wood and metal aside, even as she cut her hands doing so. "Mom! Can you hear me?! Mom!"
She managed to pull more wood aside only to see… blood flowing out of the wreckage! "What?! Mom! Dad! Please be okay!" She tried to move more wood but the branches were too heavy. She tried again, and again and again till she fall back on the couch in exhaustion.
She recomposed herself and decided she best first get out of the car. She tried to open the door but it wouldn't move. Nani realized that the doorhandle was bend. The window handle seems to work okay though. She managed to lower the already damaged window and climbed out of it without cutting herself again. She fell down into the mud but quickly got back up and moved to the front of the car, desperately hoping to see her parents injured and unconscious but alive. She wasn't that lucky however. Her mothers was lifeless and bled out wile her father... she needed to throw up. But she couldn't. She desperately tried to shake her mother. "Please don't leave me", She said to no response.
"No! Mom no… dad!" Nani collapsed crying sobbing as the rain washed her tears immediately away. "Why?! Why? They didn't deserve this, I need them… Lilo needs them! Lilo! No! How will she…"
Nani forced herself to get back up. It was raining heavily and everything looked dark in all directions. She noticed that she was starting to shiver. There seemed to be nobody around. She yelled a few times, hoping that somebody would hear her and come and help her. But, she soon realized that it was in vain.
Then, she realized it, she still had a new cell-phone back in the back of the car. She reached through the window again, desperately hoping that it wasn't broken. Lucky for her, it wasn't. She tried to call 911 but… there was no connection. Was it the storm? She felt like she could cry.
Finally, she forced herself to climb up the muddy hill, trying constantly not to slip. She kept pushing herself and pushing her self until she reached the road. She frantically looked to see if another car came by.
She kept piercing through the dark. Running and running. Suddenly she saw some moon light coming through the storm clouds, illuminating the road. She thought she saw something in the distance. Then it dawned on her, as if she were snapped back into reality, that a car could hit her in the storm. She jumped aside as a car was about to hit her.
As she fell face into the mud again, a man actually came out and helped her. He saw her tears.
"What's the matter my child?" an old man asked.
"My parents are… they're… they're dead! We were hit by a tree, we crashed!" Nani said.
"Oh poor girl, where did it happen?"
"Half a mile back I think. Down a cliff."
"I have an alarm signal in my car. I can get the authorities to come. Why don't you get in my car to get warm?"
The man put a blanket on Nani and drove to the place where the car had crashed. Eventually an emergency medical helicopter arrived. They treated her injuries but there was nothing they could do for Nani's parents. They did retrieve her trophy and escorted her home.
When Nani arrived she saw Lilo running towards her.
"Nani!1 Nani! What happened? Why were you in an ambulance? Did you win? Where are mom and dad?
"Lilo I… I have to tell you something."
