As Star turned three, it became time for her to do the one thing she has been dreading forever now...
Star looked at the large cave in the side of the mountainous volcano with disdain, she was now old enough to where she had to start going to school, and she hated just thinking about it. She turned around and spotted her father speaking with another NightWing that she knew was a high ranking official, "Dad, are you sure I should be coming here?" Star whined, "What if all the other dragons make fun of me?" she whispered.
Her father broke his conversation with the official, "Then tell me who bothers you and I will put a stop to it," he answered with a light glare, he then started smiling, "You need school just as much as any dragon, even if you are a princess," he scolded her, making her pout, "I want you to be as sharp as a thorn in that already bright mind of yours!" he said jokingly with a smile.
Star smiled and giggled, "Alright, but I really don't think I need it..." she said as she turned around and started walking towards the cave from her father, "Bye Daddy!" she said as she waved behind her.
Her father kindly waved back with a smile, he turned around and saw the dragon from before smirking at him, "What are you looking at?" he said embarrassed.
Star walked into the cave and was immediately bombarded by the noise of many excited dragonets chatting and squealing excitedly. Star sighed, she definitely didn't need to be here...
Some of the dragonets seemed to start to notice her and point at her.
"Look, it's the princess that's supposed to be in our grade..."
"She is so small compared to us though?"
"Think we should try and get close to her?"
"Where is the bathroom?"
Star shrunk in on herself from all the whispering she heard about herself, not liking the attention.
She almost jumped into the air when a loud gong sound went off down the halls, all the dragonets seeming to freeze at the sound and straighten up.
An adult dragon walked into the room and cleared her throat, "good morning student and welcome to your first day of school," the NightWing started, "My name is Selene and I will be your head teacher this year," she introduced herself as she pulled out a scroll and started reading off it, "You will all be divided up into two classes so we can teach you more properly, everyone grab a buddy and start forming a straight line!" Selene ordered.
Dragonets started clambering around and buddying up with what was likely their friends, excitedly doing so as the chattering started again.
Star was once again feeling singled out since nobody started coming over to her to buddy up with, shrinking on herself even more, feeling like a ant in a world filled with dragons.
Selene must have noticed the lack of her having a buddy because she said her name in a sentence, "Mastermind, can you please pair up with Star?" she asked kindly to another dragonet that looked like he didn't have a buddy.
"Mastermind?" Star asked herself, not knowing the dragonet even as she spotted him walking over to her.
"Hello!" Mastermind greeted kindly, giving a kind smile.
She forced a kind smile back, "Hello, did you not have a partner either?" she shily asked the larger male.
Mastermind frowned, "Not really, I have been homeschooled almost my whole life by my father, so I don't really know anyone..."
Star sighed, so at least there were dragons that were kind of like her, "I am the same way, dad always taught me stuff, but I never really came out of the palace for anything..."
Mastermind's eyes grew, "Oooh, I forgot that you're princess Star," He said shocked, he then smiled and held out a talon, "It's nice to meet you!"
Star gave a shy smile back and shook it, "Nice to meet you too Mastermind," she said while shaking his talon.
They both turned back to look at Selene as she started speaking again, "Everyone, can you please follow me?" she asked kindly. All the dragonets excitedly nodded their heads and they started following her down the halls of the learning caves.
They made it to the first class room and a good portion of all the dragonets walked inside of it, following Selen's instructions, "Alright everyone take your seats, the teacher for your class will be here soon."
Star took her seat in the back of the classroom, trying to get as far from everyone else as she could, wanting to deal with as less attention as she could.
A couple moments later, the class quieted down from the excited clamoring when a large elderly male NightWing walked inside with a warm smile on his face. He sat down in front of the class and waved, "Hello everyone, my name is Reacher, and I will be your teacher for the year," he said with a smile.
Everyone besides Star cheerfully said hi back with a wave. The teacher continued to introduce himself, but Star had already tuned him out as she started at the writing on the walls in large bright fonts.
Did these dragonets... not know how to read? She thought in horror.
She was broken out of her thoughts when Reacher placed a piece of parchment on her desk as he passed by her, "Now, I know a bunch of you don't know how to read yet, but if you do, I would like to know what you know." he said kindly, a bunch of the dragonets looking upset as he said that.
You have to be joking, she was stuck with a bunch of dragonets that were way behind her, her dad taught her how to read when she turned one...
She turned around and saw the same look on Mastermind's face, one of horror. Realizing what was going on now. And behind him, another dragon that looked... angry?
"WHAT IS THIS?!" The dragonet roared. The teacher turned around with a frown on his face, "I just want to learn a little bit about you?" he said, upset with the angry dragonet.
Mastermind went to say something but was cut off by the angry dragonet, "This is just... insulting, how am I placed in a classroom that feels like it was made for newly hatched dragonets!" the dragonet roared.
Reacher went to scold the dragonet but Mastermind cut him off, "I must say, I have to agree with Morrowseer, we are a bit more mature than... this." Mastermind awkwardly motioned towards the wall of brightly colored fonts and words that had pictures next to them.
Star found herself nodding as she agreed with them, the rest of the class looking at the trio in confusion.
Reacher spotted her nodding and sighed, "Do all three of you feel the same?" Reacher asked them with a straight face, "I will not be upset, some dragons that start here are far ahead than most dragonets in their education."
The trio nodded again, and then Reacher nodded, "Mastermind, Star, Morrowseer, would you like to see if you can test out of here?" Reacher asked kindly this time.
Mastermind nodded his head vigorously, Morrowseer scoffed and nodded his head as well, insulted that he even asked. Star slowly nodded her head as well.
Reacher nodded his head again, "Very well then, I will get the head teacher and inform her of your test, pleas wait out in the hall while I go and get Selene.
The three walked out into the hall, Star watched as all the dragonets stared at her in bewilderment as she walked out of the classroom, she rapidly ducked her head in embarrassment from the staring.
They made it out and Morrowseer scoffed again as he turned around, " That's childish, the stuff that was in that classroom!" he hissed angrily. He turned and looked at her, "You're princess Star, aren't you?" he asked with a look.
Star nodded, "Yes, I am," her frown deepened when she realized she didn't know the dragonet at all, "I am sorry, but I do not recognize you?"
Morrowseer nodded his head, "My name is Morrowseer," He said, introducing himself, "My dad is a general under your father,"
Star nodded her head, knowing she would know who he said, "Which General?"
"General Stargazer," Morrowseer answered proudly, he then turned to look at Mastermind with a questioning look.
"Mastermind," He said his name with a smile, "My dad is one of the royal scientist."
Morrowseer's frown turned into a chuckle, "Then you really shouldn't have been in that class," he then scowled, "It's truthfully insulting that any of us three were placed in there..."
Star didn't say anything as her mind wandered to her father. He wanted her to get an education, but she was sure that he would be happy if she just tested out of class altogether... right?
The dragonet's turned their head as they heard talon clacking on the stone floor down the hall, Selen coming around the corner with a serious look on her face. She walked up to the dragonets with scrolls in her talons, "You all wanted to see if you could test out of this class?"
They all nodded.
She nodded her head back, "Ok then, follow me," she said as she continued down the hall. They walked into another room in the tunnels and it looked to be a medium office with a couple desk inside of it.
"You three, please sit as far from each other as possible," Selene said as she made her way over to her desk and placed the scrolls down and grabbed three of them.
Star sat in the back of the office, Morrowseer in the middle, and Mastermind up front. Selene handed them one scroll each, "There is no time limit, please fill out these scrolls to your best ability."
Star opened it up and almost sighed in relief when the questions didn't look like they were meant for baby dragonets. She got started filling out her scroll, she was about half way done when Mastermind looked up at Selene, "Done", breaking the silence and almost making her jump from how sudden it was.
Selen took it and started reading it, slowly nodding her head as she read it, "Nice..." she then turned around and handed him another scroll, "Please fill this one out as well."
Star finished a couple minutes later, the teacher doing the same thing with her. Giving her another scroll to fill out.
Morrowseer finished his up just a hair bit later and once again, the teacher gave him another scroll.
Star noticed that she was having a bit harder of a time filling this scroll out than the first one, even thinking she got a couple of them wrong, but she did finish it without way too much difficulty. Mastermind like before, finished before her and got another scroll along with her.
This time when Morrowseer finished, he didn't get a new scroll, making him scowl as he walked out of the office and waited in the hall.
Selene took their last scrolls and read them interested, she gave Mastermind another scroll and then told her to wait out in the hall.
After about ten minutes, Mastermind walked out into the hall, "I wonder how we all did?"
The two remained quiet at that, having no clue. They just sat their and waited... and waited... and waited... until a face she wasn't expecting came through the cave and stared at her.
Her father... she almost shouted in excitement when she saw him, making him smile.
The next face she saw come through the entrance to the cave wiped the smile right off her face.
Her mother.
Selene walked up to them with a smile on her face, "Congratulations Mastermind, you have tested out of school altogether, Your parents are waiting outside," she told the now beaming dragonet.
Selene then turned to Morrowseer, "You tested up to the next grade, congratulations," Morrowseer grumbled at that but nodded as he walked out of the cave.
Selene then turned to Star, "Princess Star, congratulations, you tested up three grades, you are now in the senior class."
Star almost stumbled at that... senior class was the same class as... Nighthawk.
She never saw the smirk come on her mother's face.
