a/n: This is my first time writing a story that is not wrestling related and I'm excited! I've been rewatching One Tree Hill recently and have fallen in love all over again with Nathan and Haley. They are my favorite and I wanted to put something together. This is set sometime during Nathan playing for the Charlotte Bobcats. I hope you enjoy!
The evening was unusually quiet for Nathan and Haley. The hum of their daily routines—basketball practices, music gigs, family schedules—had been replaced by a rare stillness. It had been a whirlwind few weeks. Nathan's basketball season was in full swing, and Haley had just wrapped up traveling to some shows with Mia, leaving little room for anything that wasn't work or family. Their time together had become more about logistics than about enjoying each other's company.
But tonight, they decided, would be different.
Haley sat on the couch, a glass of wine in hand and her legs tucked beneath her, watching Nathan as he moved around the kitchen. He was attempting to cook dinner—a very ambitious task, considering the last time he did this was years ago, when he and Lucas had tried to impress their wives by making spaghetti. While spaghetti was usually simple, somehow the two managed to mess that up and pizza was ordered instead.
She smiled to herself at the memory before focusing on Nathan again. She was appreciating the effort, even if it was out of the goodness of his heart rather than his culinary skills. There was something about the way he moved around their kitchen, trying his best to follow a recipe he'd pulled up on his phone. It was endearing. It reminded her of how much he still tried, after all these years. Plus, it only made her more attracted to him.
"You know," Haley began, leaning back into the couch, "I could've helped you with that." She said before taking a sip of her wine.
Nathan glanced over his shoulder, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I've got this. You've cooked enough for both of us. Besides, I promised you a night off. You're not allowed to touch anything in here."
Haley raised an eyebrow, a smile forming as she took in the scene before her. "Not even you?" she teased, biting her lip playfully.
"Hm, is my girl frisky?" he smirked.
Haley simply responded with a coy shrug, causing Nathan to shake his head in amusement. "So, what exactly are you making?" Haley asked Nathan.
"It's, uh…well, it's supposed to be chicken parmesan," he said, holding up a plate of chicken that had clearly been dipped in breadcrumbs and was now sitting on a frying pan, sizzling away. "But I think I might have missed a step somewhere along the way."
"Chicken parm?" Haley asked amused. "We'll see how that turns out."
"I think I'll need you to help me out a little after dinner," Nathan continued, turning the chicken over with more confidence now. "Jamie's been begging me to help him with his science project, and I'm pretty sure the last thing I remember from science class is that the adult human body has 206 bones; definitely not helpful when building a volcano." He joked.
Haley chuckled softly, her heart swelling with love for the man she had married. There was no one else who would go so far to make her smile, even if it meant he ended up way in over his head. He had always been like this, willing to try, even if he didn't have all the answers. Especially when it came to their family.
The smell of the cooking chicken filled the room, and Nathan moved to the counter to check the recipe again. Haley stood up, crossing the room to stand beside him. Reaching up, she lightly touched his arm, and he immediately turned to face her.
"Hey," she said softly, gazing up into his eyes. "I love you, you know." She said, cupping his cheek with her hand.
He gave her a smile that made his face light up, the kind of smile that always made her heart skip a beat. "I love you, too." He said, turning his head to kiss her palm.
"I'm serious," she continued, her voice dropping to a more intimate tone. "I know things have been crazy lately, but I just…I really love you. And I'm glad we are doing this."
Curious, Nathan raised an eyebrow, "Doing what?"
"This. Spending time together," she said, gesturing to the living room. "Even if it's just for a few hours. Just you and me. Just us."
There was a pause, a comfortable silence between them before Nathan's expression softened, and he gently reached for her hand, squeezing it. "I know. Me too."
They stood there for a moment, just taking in the quiet. Then, Haley turned her attention back to the meal he was preparing, which was beginning to smell a lot better than she had expected. "You know, this doesn't look half-bad. I might even be willing to taste it."
"I'm offended that you think I'd serve you something that didn't taste good," Nathan teased, but there was a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm about to make my grand dinner debut."
Haley laughed and stepped back, giving him space to finish his masterpiece. She settled back into the couch, feeling the warmth of their home and their life surrounding her. It was in moments like this, when everything was so simple, that she realized just how much she cherished their little world.
The table was set; soft music played in the background, a mixture of their favorite artists. Dinner was, surprisingly edible, though not quite as good as Haley's usual cooking. No pizza was needed this time around. Nathan had gone all out, serving the chicken parm with a side of garlic bread and a simple salad. It was far from perfect, but it was theirs.
They sat down together, their plates filled, the glow of the candles casting a soft light across their faces. The quiet hum of the evening settled around them, as if the world outside had faded away. For this one moment, there were no distractions—no deadlines, no calls to make, no meetings to attend. Just the two of them.
Haley took a bite of her food, then looked at Nathan with a knowing smile. "You know, this actually isn't that bad."
Nathan grinned, relieved. "I told you."
"As a matter of fact, I think you should cook more often," she teased, a playful smirk on her face. "Maybe you've found a new talent."
"Next time I'll try a five-star recipe," Nathan said, leaning back in his chair. "But no promises."
They both laughed, and the sound filled the room like music.
For the first time in weeks, they felt at peace. It wasn't about grand gestures or declarations. It was about the quiet moments—sharing a meal, laughing together, and just being present in each other's company. Sometimes, that was all they needed.
The world could wait. For tonight, it was just Nathan and Haley.
The song playing in the background shifted into something slower, softer—one of their old favorites. Nathan met Haley's gaze and without saying anything, he stood up slowly and held out his hand to her.
Haley, a little surprised but entirely willing, took his hand and allowed him to pull her to her feet. They didn't need words to communicate this because after all these years, they knew that the dance wasn't about the steps or the rhythm; it was about being in each other's arms, just the two of them, letting everything else fade away.
The moment felt timeless as they swayed together in the middle of their living room. Haley's head rested on Nathan's chest, and his arms encircled her, pulling her close, as the music wrapped them in its warmth. There were no distractions now—just the quiet music, the steady beat of Nathan's heart, and the peace of the moment.
Haley closed her eyes, feeling the steady rhythm of Nathan's breath, the weight of the world lifting with each soft step they took together. It was just them, dancing in their living room like they had when they were younger, but this time, there was no uncertainty. They had built something real; something lasting.
Nathan kissed the top of her head softly, the warmth of his lips lingering as he held her closer, his voice barely a whisper. "I love you, Hales."
Haley's heart swelled at the simplicity of his words and the tenderness they carried. She looked up at him then, her eyes shimmering with emotion, filled with the love they had for each other. "I love you too, Nathan," she whispered affectionately.
Nathan gently cupped her cheek and closed the distance between them; their lips meeting in a kiss that was slow, tender and full of meaning. The world seemed to fall away for those brief seconds, leaving only the sound of their hearts beating in sync. Nathan's hand found her waist, pulling her even closer, as if he needed to remind himself that she was real, that she was right there, in his arms.
The kiss deepened just slightly, a perfect balance of love and reassurance. It wasn't hurried or frantic—just an intimate exchange that told them everything they needed to know. When they pulled away, their foreheads rested together and they continued to sway together to the music. Nathan smiled softly, his thumb brushing the side of her face. "You're my everything, Haley."
Haley smiled back, her eyes still closed, savoring the warmth of him, of the moment they shared. "I know," she whispered. "And you're mine."
They continued to dance, the world outside their door forgotten.
For this one moment, there was nothing else they needed.
