(A/N: All right, I'm sure you guys had expected Jr. to fail those challenges, but maybe he can turn his luck around in this chapter? We shall see.)
Day 5
Bowser Jr. was not a happy camper as he stood in the entertainment room, looking at his older siblings. So far, he'd failed the first 4 challenges, two of which he would've been able to win very easily, but two small missteps cost him two wins! This was so unfair.
Now Jr. was down to the last 3 challenges, which were set up by Morton, Roy, and Ludwig. He was afraid that the 3 oldest Koopalings had dreamed up challenges that would make the original "Super Mario Bros. 2" look like a cakewalk!
"Okay, Jr., I know that you've had some pretty hard luck during the past several days, and I'm sure you're feeling very discouraged by that." Morton began.
"You can say that again..." Jr. unhappily muttered under his breath.
"But I think you might be able to turn that bad run of luck around with my challenge. Are you willing to give it a try and see what will happen?" asked Morton.
"I... I-I don't really know..." Jr. replied.
"Please?" Morton asked.
"Unless you'd rather go to Isle Delfino today..." Roy reminded him.
"I guess I'll do the challenge... Morton did say 'please', after all..." Jr. replied, but his stomach doing backflips. He wasn't sure he could win Morton's challenge, but he had no intention of going to Isle Delfino.
"All right. Here's the controller you'll be using today." said Morton, trying not to sound relieved as he carefully placed a gray Nintendo 64 controller in his little brother's hands.
"I get to play the N64 today?! All right, this is great! So what game am I going to play?!" asked Jr. with an excited smile on his face. This console had quite a few neat "Super Mario" spin-offs on it. Maybe Morton had been willing to cut him some slack and let him do something easy and fun on this console.
"This one!" said Morton as he turned on the console. The words "Super Mario 64" appeared on the screen, followed by an all-too-familiar voice saying, "It's-a me, Mario!"
"Oh no..." Jr. said as his face fell. He was hoping that maybe he would get to play a "Mario Party" game, or even a sports game, not another of the main games. This was no fun at all!
Then Mario's big face appeared on the screen, saying "Hello!"
Jr. smirked and decided to have some fun by messing with Mario's face before he started Morton's challenge. The Koopalings decided that after the hard luck Jr. had dealt with, they would let him have a little bit of fun before he began the challenge. However, Roy said, "Don't be messing around with Mario's face all day, Jr. You still have a challenge to do in that game, remember?"
"I know, Roy. I just wanna give that ear of his a good, hard tug!" Jr. said as he tugged on Mario's ear and dragged it as far as he could. He was having lots of fun messing with Mario's head. It helped him to relax. A few minutes later, he decided that he'd had enough fun, so he pressed 'Start'. When the file select screen appeared, he said, "Okay, Morton. I'm ready to play. What do I do now?"
"Simple. Go into the first file." said Morton.
"The first one? But it's already been completed! There's nothing left for me to do in it!" said Jr.
"That may seem true, but your challenge can't take place in any of the other files. They're not prepared for what you need to do." said Morton.
"Huh? What does that mean, and what kind of sense does that make?" Jr. asked with a confused look on his face.
"Just... select the file, get Mario into Peach's Castle, and I'll explain the idea of my challenge once you've done that, okay?" Morton replied.
"Okay." said Jr. with a shrug. He selected the first file and sent Mario into the castle. Once inside, he said, "All right, he's standing around in the castle. What do you want me to do?"
"Here's where the real fun starts. In this game, you know that you'll have to do battle with King Dad in three different places, and Mario's going to save Peach. However, you also know that you need a certain number of Power Stars in order to gain access to those places, hence the reason the other files aren't prepared." Morton began.
"Wait a minute. Now I get it. You're going to make me fight Papa in all three of those places, aren't you, Morton?" Jr. guessed, sounding displeased at the idea of making Mario fight his father. This didn't bother him too much in Larry's challenge, because the Bowsers he fought in the first 7 Worlds were fakes.
"Bingo! Give the boy a reward!" said Morton.
"Okay. How about this?" said Ludwig, conjuring up a full-sized candy bar (still in its wrapper) and handing it to Jr.
"That'll do." said Roy.
"Mr. Goodbar!" Jr. exclaimed as he recognized the wrapper of the candy bar. He swiped the candy bar, unwrapped it, and ate it rapidly. Then he asked, "All right, so all I have to do is fight Papa and beat him in this game?"
"Yeah, that's pretty much it." said Morton.
"That sounds fair enough to me. I've fought Mario in "Super Koopa 64" lots of times before, and I always kick his sorry butt, so I think I can do this." said Jr., looking confident.
"Don't say that, Jr. Fighting King Dad and beating him is part of the challenge, but the main part is that you have to make sure he hits a bomb every time you throw him. If you miss even once, you're gonna fail the challenge." said Morton.
"Ohhh..." said Jr., sounding unhappy. He didn't know if he could do this one. It sounded pretty difficult. He had yet to do that when fighting against Mario in "Super Koopa 64". But he sent Mario to fight Bowser in the Dark World. Getting there was not as easy as it sounded, but he got the plumber to the Warp Pipe that led to the arena with full health. He paused the game for a moment to mentally prepare himself for what he had to do.
"Jr., are you doing this, or what?" Roy asked.
"I am. I just... need to prepare myself for what I'm about to do to Papa." said Jr.
"Okay. But you'd better be quick about it." Roy told him.
"Don't push me. You know that I'm not used to playing games where I have to fight against Papa." Jr. scolded. He took a deep breath and said, "All right. I'm ready. Let's do this." Then he sent Mario down the Warp Pipe to begin the first battle against Bowser in the game. Then Mario found himself in the arena, with Bowser approaching him, telling him that the princess wasn't there, and he'd never be able to throw him out of the arena.
"Wanna bet, King Dad?" asked Morton.
"Hey, show Papa some respect!" said Jr.
"I do, but not when he's in that game." said Morton.
Jr. rolled his eyes, but he started the battle. He quickly managed to get behind Bowser and grab him by the tail. Then he began to swing the giant Koopa 'round and 'round, before sending him flying towards one of the bombs. Then he heard Mario say what sounded like, "So long, gay Bowser!"
"Did he just call Papa..." Jr. started.
"No. He said, 'Kinga Bowser'." said Ludwig.
(A/N: That is what Charles Martinet said, even though that's not what it sounded like.)
"But it sounded like he was calling Papa 'gay'! Papa isn't gay!" Jr. said.
"We know, Jr." Wendy said, trying to calm him.
Sure enough, Bowser hit the bomb on the first throw. Now he was down, but he certainly wasn't out. The game would be far too easy if Bowser had admitted defeat after being blown up by one measly little bomb. He told Mario that he'd let him go for now, but he'd pay for it later.
"Are you sure about that, Daddykins? I don't think so..." said Wendy in a sing-song voice.
Jr. gave her a look before grabbing up the key his father left behind after vanishing.
Then Jr. sent Mario to take on Bowser in the Fire Sea. Getting to Bowser in this place was not an easy chore, either, since Mario was not a Koopa, and therefore unable to handle the lava as well as they could. But he got him to the Warp Pipe with full health.
"All right, Papa. You picked a really bad place to plan this next battle against Mario, and now he's going to have to make you sorry that you did it." said Jr. as he sent Mario down the Warp Pipe to begin the next fight.
Well, he almost failed to do anything in that battle, for the first thing Bowser did was jump, causing the stage to tilt when he landed. Mario almost fell into the lava, and he would have lost a life if Jr. hadn't reacted so quickly.
"Ohhhh, no you don't, Papa! You can't go knocking me into the lava like that! I won't let you stop me!" Jr. exclaimed as he kept Mario from falling off of the stage and into the lava.
But because Mario was so far away from Bowser after the stage stopped tilting, the Koopa King charged at him like an angry bull, causing Jr. to exclaim, "Geez, Papa! Who do you think you are?! Bald Bull from the "Punch-Out!" World?!" He remembered Little Mac telling everyone about his boxing opponents during the visits to Smash Mansion, and Bald Bull was one of them.
Fortunately, Bowser had charged to the edge of the platform, which caused him to falter. That gave Jr. the opportunity to grab Bowser by the tail.
"Ha! Caught you!" Jr. cheered triumphantly as he began swinging Bowser 'round and 'round once again. And when he was thrown, the Koopa King hit a bomb, which meant that he was defeated.
"I win again!" Jr. exclaimed in happiness. Maybe Morton was right, after all.
"Morton, he's doing really well at this. He might win." Roy whispered.
"I know you're worried, but you know that hitting the bomb on every throw when you fight King Dad in the Sky is easier said than done. That might be where he'll ultimately fail the challenge." Morton whispered back.
Jr. didn't really hear the conversation between his brothers. It wasn't just because they were hanging back and being too quiet for him to hear. He didn't even notice them because he was busy reading Bowser's dialogue in a flat voice with no emotion whatsoever, then grabbed up the key that was left behind.
"All right, Jr. Next up is "Bowser in the Sky". If King Dad can hit a bomb on each throw, you'll win the challenge. But you can't miss once, or else you'll fail." Morton warned him.
"I know. But I've done pretty good for the most part, haven't I?" asked Jr.
"Yes. You're doing well." said Morton, nodding his head.
So Jr. happily led Mario to the 'endless' staircase, which was no longer endless once you had 70 or more Power Stars under your belt. Once he reached the top, he entered the way to "Bowser in the Sky".
"All right, here we are!" Jr. said as he entered the stage. However, this one almost made "Bowser in the Fire Sea" look easy, since Bowser knew that Mario wasn't a quitter. The Koopa King was pretty much throwing even the kitchen sink at Mario. But Jr. still had full health by the time he reached Bowser.
The creepy organ music that played when Bowser appeared didn't scare Jr., because he'd heard it before in the final battle with Mario in "Super Koopa 64". This was nothing new to him.
"All right, Papa. I get what you're thinking, but guess what? You're not going to be the victor this time. Mario is going to save the Toads and the princess, and there's no way you're gonna stop him." Jr. replied to Bowser after reading his dialogue in a bored voice.
For the most part, Jr. did very well in the battle. He was dodging his father's attacks with no trouble, and he hit a bomb on the first two throws.
"Look at that! One more bomb, and you're down for the count, Papa!" Jr. declared to the Bowser on the T.V. screen. But then Bowser caused the entire outer edge of the battlefield to break off, forming it into a star-like shape.
"Oh, that's cold, Papa..." Jr. muttered. But he knew that was coming. Mario did the exact same thing when he was close to death in "Super Koopa 64". However, Jr. knew that he couldn't think about little things like that. Not right now. He had to concentrate on the game, which he was about to win.
A minute later, he grabbed Bowser by the tail and swung him 'round and 'round, sent him flying towards a bomb... but he missed it by a little!
Jr.'s eyes went big as he realized that he missed the bomb, and he hollered, "NOOOOOOO!"
"Another failure." said Morton as he shut off the console.
"No! I almost had it! I was going to win! I had Papa right where he was supposed to go! Why didn't he hit the bomb?!" Jr. screamed.
"The third and final throw requires much more power and timing than the first two, Jr." Ludwig explained as he drew a red 'X' on Morton's note card.
"These things happen, Jr., but we've gotta admit that you did very well for the most part. You actually got Mario to King Dad without losing any lives each time." Larry said.
"Yeah, getting Mario to King Dad in the Fire Sea and the Sky with a full health meter is not as easy as one might think. You done good there." Lemmy added.
"But I could've done it! I came so close! So very close! Victory was within my grasp!" Jr. exclaimed.
"We know, Jr." said Iggy.
"You still deserve some kind of reward for almost beating Morton's challenge." said Wendy. She used her wand to conjure up a big chocolate chip cookie, and she gave it to Jr.
"Ooh, my favorite! Thanks, sis!" Jr. exclaimed as he snatched the cookie and enjoyed it.
"Don't forget. You still have two challenges left, and you're doing mine tomorrow." Roy reminded his little brother.
"Oh great, now I feel a lot better!" Jr. replied sarcastically, feeling sick. Roy wasn't called 'Bully' for no reason. Jr. was under the impression that Roy's challenge was going to be the most difficult of them all.
"Relax, Jr. It's doable, so you don't need to panic." Roy told him, noticing his nervousness.
"Right..." said Jr.
"What's he got to be so nervous about? He's done my challenge before without even realizing it." Roy whispered to Ludwig.
"Because he's already failed more than half of these challenges, and he probably has a sick feeling that while you've come up with a challenge that might be doable, it might be almost impossible for him to complete." Ludwig whispered back.
"When tomorrow gets here and he learns what my challenge is, I'm sure he'll be breathing easily again." Roy said.
"We'll see." said Ludwig.
Day 6
When it was time for Jr. to play the next challenge, he was undoubtedly very nervous.
"So, Jr., are you ready to attempt my challenge?" asked Roy.
"I... I-I guess so..." said Jr., looking nervous.
"Hey, don't get all scared on me. You've actually done my challenge before, but in its "Super Koopa" form." Roy told him as he turned on the T.V. and the Wii console.
"I have?" Jr. asked, surprise in his voice.
"Yup! My challenge is in the game "Super Mario Galaxy 2"! The objective is for you to complete The Perfect Run on your first try!" said Roy as the Disc Channel displayed the picture for the game.
The room was quiet, and a few beats of silence ticked by before Jr. mustered up the courage to reply to this, and it wasn't a happy reply.
"You're expecting me to complete that mess on my first try?! I lost count of how many lives I lost before I completed it for the first time in "Super Koopa Galaxy 2"! So you know as well as I do that it's not as easy as you want me to think!" Jr. complained.
"Would you rather go to Isle Delfino right now?" Roy asked.
"No, sir!" Jr. replied, shaking his head hard.
"Then do my challenge." Roy told him.
"Fine, I'll do it." Jr. sighed in aggravation as he picked up the Wii remote that was colored like Bowser and selected the Disc Channel.
"You just gotta believe, Jr. That's all we can tell you." said Ludwig as he started the game and selected the first file.
"This is not going to be easy." Jr. muttered under his breath. Everyone who played this challenge (or watched it on YouTube) knew that you couldn't take one hit, or else you had to do it all over again. But he decided that he should be somewhat thankful. It wasn't like Roy was expecting him to play the whole game in one sitting. Video games nowadays were a lot bigger and more complicated than they used to be, and they took several days to complete.
"Do I really gotta do this?" Jr. asked himself as he chose to visit the Grandmaster Galaxy. He selected "The Perfect Run", but he closed his eyes as he chose to play it.
"Go for it, Jr." said Roy, which made Jr. open his eyes as Mario reached the starting point and the words 'Welcome to the Galaxy!' appeared on the screen.
"Okay, Jr. Breathe. Stay calm. You can do this challenge." Jr. told himself, even though his voice was shaking slightly as he tried to encourage himself.
And sure enough, Jr. was doing a fairly good job at this challenge. He'd had a few close calls here and there, but he managed to get past them with his single piece of health intact.
"Whoa! That was TOO close!" Jr. said to himself after an EXTREMELY close call that almost cost him the challenge. He had to pause the game and wait a minute for his heart to stop racing before he went on.
After several more close calls, Jr. was at the home-stretch! He reached the Boomerang Bros., which happened to be the very last obstacle he had to get past. Once he defeated them, he'd be home-free! This was terrific!
"Wow! I've never made it this far on the first try!" Jr. thought, his eyes sparkling in excitement, the same way his late mother's eyes sparkled whenever she was excited about something. He felt like singing the "I'm So Happy" song from "T.U.F.F. Puppy" (at least, what he'd heard of it), but he put on a serious face as he dealt with the Boomerang Bros. He knew that he could sing the "I'm So Happy..." song later.
But right before Jr. could deal the final blow on the last of the Boomerang Bros., he had to abandon the idea of singing, because... he got hit with the boomerang, and he lost miserably.
"NO NO NO!" Jr. exclaimed in despair as he realized what happened to Mario right when he all but had it. He was so upset that Lemmy had to get him out of the game and shut off the console.
"I'm sorry, Jr. And you were doing so well..." said Iggy.
Jr. didn't respond. He just threw himself into his brother's arms and tried not to cry.
"Geez, I know he was in the wrong, but I have to admit that I hate seeing him upset like this..." said Wendy, looking at Jr. with some sympathy in her eyes.
"But Wendy, you know well that after what he did on Isle Delfino, we can't let him get to us." Ludwig reminded her.
"I know that. I even said that he was in the wrong. You say that as if I'm stupid." Wendy replied.
"I'm just making sure you know better than to give in to him." Ludwig said.
"I won't give in." Wendy assured him as she inconspicuously brought up a picture of Mario on her smartphone. The female Koopaling carefully scrutinized the plumber's expressive face. It reminded her not to fall for anything that Jr. might try. She had to remind herself that Jr. had framed Mario and tricked everyone into hating him so much that they threw him in prison, and that was bad.
However, Jr. still has one more challenge left to take on... from Ludwig. What will it be? Can he do it? Maybe you should stay tuned if you want to find out what Jr. does!
