Chapter 7: The Balancing Act
Time moved swiftly, and Olivia's pregnancy progressed in what felt like the blink of an eye. Her first trimester had been a blur of morning sickness and exhaustion, with Nick by her side every step of the way. By her second trimester, she was feeling more like herself, and her growing bump became impossible to hide. The squad embraced her pregnancy in their own unique ways, showering her with support and a touch of overprotectiveness that sometimes made her laugh and other times made her roll her eyes.
Balancing Work and Love
One afternoon, Olivia was sitting at her desk, reviewing a stack of case files. Amanda walked by, placing a cup of decaf coffee in front of her. "Decaf," Amanda said pointedly, crossing her arms. "Don't even think about sneaking the real stuff, Liv." Olivia sighed but smiled. "Thanks, Amanda. You've made it your mission to keep me in line, huh?"
Amanda grinned. "Someone has to. And don't think I didn't notice you running after that perp last week. You're supposed to let us handle the heavy lifting now."
Nick, who had been passing by, stopped and shot Olivia a knowing look. "She's right. You promised to take it easy." Olivia waved them off. "I'm pregnant, not broken. But fine—I'll be careful." Despite her protests, Olivia secretly appreciated how much everyone cared. Fin had taken to texting her every morning to make sure she ate breakfast, and Munch had an endless supply of unsolicited parenting advice, which he swore came from his nieces and nephews.
A Difficult Case
As Olivia entered her third trimester, the squad found themselves embroiled in a particularly challenging case—a string of assaults that had the entire team working late nights and early mornings. Olivia hated being sidelined from fieldwork, but Nick was adamant about her staying safe.
One evening, as they worked late in the squad room, Nick noticed Olivia absentmindedly rubbing her belly. "Alright," he said, standing up and taking the file out of her hands. "That's enough for tonight. You need rest." Olivia glared at him, but her exhaustion betrayed her. "Nick, I'm fine."
"You've been on your feet all day, Liv. Come on, let me take you home," he insisted. Before she could argue, Amanda chimed in from across the room. "He's right. Go home. We've got this." Reluctantly, Olivia agreed, allowing Nick to guide her out. On the way home, he placed a hand on her belly as they stopped at a red light.
"Baby Benson-Amaro," he said softly, "you're already causing quite the stir." Olivia laughed. "Just wait until they're here. Then the real chaos begins."
Moments with Zara
One Sunday morning, Nick, Olivia, and Zara were having breakfast together at Olivia's apartment. Zara was perched on her chair, spreading jam on her toast with intense focus. "Liv," Zara asked suddenly, her voice filled with curiosity, "when the baby comes, are they going to live here with you?" Olivia smiled, glancing at Nick. "Yes, sweetheart. The baby will live with me, and your daddy will be here a lot too."
Zara thought for a moment, then looked up with wide eyes. "Does that mean you're going to marry Daddy?"
Olivia froze, caught off guard by the innocent question. Nick choked on his coffee, coughing as he tried to compose himself. "Well," Olivia began carefully, "your daddy and I love each other very much. But marriage is a big decision." Zara tilted her head. "But if you love each other, isn't that what you do? Get married?" Nick reached over to ruffle Zara's hair. "We'll see, munchkin. For now, we're just really happy the way things are." Zara nodded, satisfied for the moment, but Olivia couldn't help but notice the way Nick avoided her gaze for the rest of the morning.
Cute, Quiet Moments
Despite the chaos of work and preparing for the baby, Olivia and Nick found small moments of joy together. One evening, they sat on the couch, Olivia's feet propped up on Nick's lap as he gently massaged them. "Remind me to thank you for being the best partner in the world," Olivia murmured, her eyes half-closed. Nick chuckled. "You can thank me by letting me name the baby."
Olivia opened one eye. "Oh, really? And what's your suggestion?" "Zara 2.0," he teased, earning a playful swat on the arm. "You're ridiculous," she said, but she was smiling.
Later that night, as Olivia lay in bed, Nick rested his hand on her belly, feeling the baby kick. "Strong little one," he whispered. "Just like their mom." Olivia placed her hand over his, her heart full.
The Squad Steps In
As her due date approached, the squad became even more overprotective. One day, as Olivia reached for a box of case files, Fin swooped in and grabbed it before she could. "What are you doing?" he asked, glaring at her. "Carrying files?" Olivia replied, exasperated. "Not on my watch. Sit down, Liv."
Even Munch joined in, offering to carry her things and making sure she had snacks at her desk. Amanda started planning a baby shower, insisting it would be "SVU-themed but cute."
Through it all, Olivia couldn't help but feel grateful. Her work family, her growing family with Nick and Zara—they had all come together to support her in a way she never expected.
As Olivia lay in bed that night, Nick beside her, Zara asleep on their bed after a movie night. She felt the baby kick and placed Nick's hand on her belly. "Do you think we're ready for this?" she asked smiled. "Ready or not, here they come. But yeah, Liv—we're ready. We've got this."
And as they drifted off to sleep, Olivia knew he was right. They might not have all the answers, but they had each other—and that was enough.
