Ch 8: A Family's Promise

Seeking Cragen's Blessing

The next day, Nick found himself standing outside Cragen's office, nervously fiddling with the wedding band in his pocket. He knew Olivia would never expect this, and that's exactly why he wanted to do it right. Cragen wasn't just Olivia's boss—he was her mentor, someone she admired and respected like a father. Nick felt it was only fitting to get his blessing first.

"Come on in," Cragen called when Nick knocked hesitantly. Nick stepped in, closing the door behind him. Cragen looked up from his paperwork, eyebrows raised. "What's on your mind, Amaro?" Nick sat down, suddenly feeling like a nervous teenager. He cleared his throat. "Captain, I, uh… I wanted to talk to you about something important. Something personal."

Cragen leaned back in his chair, a slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "This have to do with Olivia?" Nick nodded. "Yeah. You've always been there for her, Captain. She looks up to you more than anyone, and I know how much your opinion matters to her. That's why I wanted to come to you first… to ask for your blessing to marry her."

Cragen's expression softened as he folded his hands on the desk. "Nick, you've been good for Olivia. I've seen the way she's changed since you two got together—she's happier, more at ease. And from what I've seen, you've been there for her every step of the way. You have my blessing, but let me give you one piece of advice." Nick leaned forward. "Of course."

"Marriage isn't just about love—it's about partnership, trust, and commitment. Olivia's been through a lot in her life, and I know she's scared of losing people she loves. Make sure she knows you're in this for the long haul, no matter what." Nick nodded, his voice steady. "I am, Captain. She's my everything."

Cragen smiled warmly. "Then what are you waiting for? Go make her the happiest woman in the world."

Zara's Big Job

That evening, Nick sat Zara down in her room, the little girl cross-legged on her bed, clutching her favorite stuffed animal.

"Zara, I need your help with something really important," Nick began, his tone serious but kind.

Zara tilted her head, curious. "What is it, Daddy?"

Nick pulled out a small jewelry box and opened it to reveal a delicate engagement ring. Zara's eyes went wide.

"I'm going to ask Olivia to marry me," Nick explained. "But I thought it would be special if you helped me. What do you think?"

Zara's face lit up with excitement. "Yes! Yes! I want to help! What do I do?"

Nick grinned, relieved by her enthusiasm. "Okay, here's the plan…"

The Proposal

The next evening, Nick planned a quiet dinner at Olivia's apartment. Zara was buzzing with excitement but had been sworn to secrecy. Olivia had no idea what was coming.

After dinner, they were sitting on the couch, Olivia laughing as Zara climbed onto her lap to snuggle.

"Liv," Zara said suddenly, looking up at her with those big, innocent eyes, "can I ask you something?"

"Of course, sweetheart," Olivia replied, brushing a strand of hair out of Zara's face.

"Do you love Daddy?" Zara asked, her tone curious but serious.

Olivia glanced at Nick, surprised, then back at Zara. "I do," she said softly. "Very much."

Zara beamed, her excitement barely contained. "Good! 'Cause Daddy has something to say!"

Nick chuckled, shaking his head as he pulled the ring box out of his pocket. He moved to kneel in front of Olivia, taking her hand in his.

"Olivia," he began, his voice steady but full of emotion, "you've changed my life in more ways than I can count. You're my partner in every sense of the word—the love of my life, the mother of my child, and soon, the mother of our child together. I can't imagine a future without you. I don't want to imagine it."

Tears welled up in Olivia's eyes as Nick continued, "You've always said you weren't sure if marriage was in the cards for you, but I'm hoping I can change your mind. Olivia Benson, will you marry me?"

Olivia looked down at the ring, then at Nick, her heart swelling. "Yes," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Yes, of course."

Zara clapped her hands excitedly. "Yay! You're going to be my mommy forever now!"

Olivia pulled Zara into a tight hug, then leaned down to kiss Nick, her tears falling freely. "I love you," she said softly.

"I love you, too," Nick replied, slipping the ring onto her finger.

In that moment, everything felt right. Their family wasn't conventional, but it was theirs—filled with love, laughter, and a future brighter than either of them could have imagined.
