Chapter 9 : A Family Grows

Olivia had spent the afternoon at home with Zara, who was sprawled on the floor coloring while Amanda perched on the couch, sipping tea. Olivia had been on maternity leave for a few weeks now, her due date looming any day, but she'd insisted on staying active and keeping things normal for Zara.

Amanda smirked at Olivia from across the room. "You're really handling this whole pregnancy thing like a champ. You sure you're not secretly freaking out?" Olivia laughed, rubbing her very prominent belly. "Oh, trust me, I'm freaking out. But it's mostly about how we're going to juggle two kids and work. Nick thinks we've got it all figured out, but…" She trailed off as a sharp pain suddenly shot through her abdomen. Amanda noticed Olivia's face tense and immediately sat up. "Liv, you okay?"

Olivia took a deep breath, trying to dismiss the discomfort. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's probably just—" Another, stronger contraction cut her off, and this time, her expression left no room for doubt. "Okay, no, you're not fine!" Amanda said, already pulling out her phone. "How far apart are they?" Olivia checked her watch, her voice tight. "Ten minutes… maybe less." Amanda's eyes widened. "We need to get you to the hospital. Now."

Zara looked up from her coloring, concern etched on her face. "Is the baby coming?" Olivia nodded, forcing a reassuring smile. "Yeah, sweetie. But Aunt Amanda is going to take care of us, okay?"

A Complicated Case

Meanwhile, Nick was at the precinct, knee-deep in a frustrating case involving a serial burglar who had escalated to violent assaults. He had been working with Fin and Munch all day, and the suspect had finally been located at a halfway house across 's phone buzzed on his desk, and he saw Amanda's name flash across the screen. He answered immediately. "Hey, Amanda, what's up?"

"Nick, you need to get to Mercy Hospital. Olivia's in labor." Nick's heart stopped. "What? Now?"

"Yes, now! Get moving! Zara and I are with her, but you don't want to miss this!" Nick hung up, turning to Fin and Munch. "Guys, I've got to go. Olivia's having the baby." Fin grinned and clapped him on the back. "Go, man. We've got this."

Just in Time

By the time Nick burst through the doors of the labor and delivery unit, Amanda was waiting in the hallway, Zara by her side. "She's asking for you," Amanda said, pointing to the room. Nick leaned down and kissed Zara on the head. "Be good for Aunt Amanda, okay? I'll be back soon."

"Okay, Daddy," Zara said, her voice small but excited. Nick rushed into the room to find Olivia breathing through another contraction, her face pale but determined. When she saw him, her expression softened with relief.

"You made it," she said, her voice shaky. "Of course I did," Nick said, grabbing her hand and pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'm here, Liv. We're doing this together."

A Beautiful Baby Girl

Hours later, Olivia's cries of exertion were replaced by the tiny wails of a newborn. Nick cut the umbilical cord, tears streaming down his face as the nurse placed their baby girl on Olivia's chest.

"She's perfect," Olivia whispered, her voice thick with emotion as she cradled the baby close. Nick leaned down, kissing both Olivia and their daughter. "You both are."

"What should we name her?" Olivia asked, looking up at Nick. He smiled, his voice gentle. "You choose, Liv." Olivia looked down at their daughter, her tiny hand curling around Olivia's finger. "How about Grace?" Nick nodded, his smile widening. "Grace Amaro. It's perfect."

A Family Moment

A few days later, they were back at Nick's house. Olivia sat propped up in bed, Grace nestled in the crook of her arm while Zara lay beside her, staring at her new baby sister in awe. "She's so tiny," Zara whispered, reaching out to touch Grace's hand.

"She'll get bigger," Olivia said softly, brushing a hand over Zara's hair. Nick walked in, carrying a tray with tea for Olivia and juice for Zara. He climbed into bed, sitting on the other side of Grace, his arm draping around Olivia's shoulders.

For a while, they sat there in peaceful silence, their little family complete.

Then Nick broke the quiet with a cocky grin. "So, Liv, are you glad we didn't keep things professional after that drunken hookup?"

Olivia shot him a playful glare, but her smile betrayed her amusement. "You're never going to let me live that down, are you?"

"Not a chance," Nick said, leaning over to kiss her.

Olivia laughed, her heart full as she looked around at the people she loved most in the world. "Fine. I'll admit it—you were right. But don't let it go to your head."

Nick smirked. "Too late."

As Zara giggled beside them and Grace let out a tiny coo, Olivia couldn't help but feel that, despite the twists and turns their journey had taken, they were exactly where they were meant to be.
