Luigi was running forward towards the sound of gunfire near Flower Fields, leading his company and two others toward the battle as fast as he could. He looked through his binoculars and saw a trench had been dug along a hill with logs stacked in front of it. He saw the rebellion flags, a blue flag with a fire flower on it, waving above the trenches with a few scattered groups of rebel troops trying to hold the line. Loyalist troops were advancing in lines towards the entrenchments, he could see the yellow flags with mushrooms on them through the chaos moving towards the rebel lines. The Loyalists were taking heavy losses but not stopping. As one line fell back another moved forward.

Luigi lowered his binoculars and raised his rifle over his head as he yelled "Move forward! Get to the trenches! We have to hold the line! Let's go!"

He ran forward towards the trench, passing wounded being taken to the rear. His troops followed him with a yell and took up positions in the trench. Luigi began looking for the field commander and found a soldier on and Ostro with a Major insignia on his sleeve.

"Companies A, G and L of the 1st Sarasaland Brigade have arrived!" he yelled "what are your orders?!"

"Put your men in line on the west!" the Major yelled back over the gunfire "our flank is growing weaker from th-"

The Major fell off his Ostro from a bullet hitting him in the chest.

"Sir?!" Luigi yelled "Major?!" Luigi checked his pulse and hung his head for a second, then turned to the troops and yelled "keep up the fire boys! Don't let them get close!" he pointed to a toad on and Ostro and yelled "You! Go back and tell them to get more ammunition up here!" The toad nodded and rode to the rear. "Steady boys!" he yelled "we have to hold the line!"

His timidity seemingly disappeared in the heat of battle. Luigi began moving up and down the line making sure soldiers were in place and keeping discipline among the troops. He came to an artillery battery that wasn't firing.

"What's the problem here?!" He yelled "why are the cannons silent?!"

"We're out of ammunition!" a soldier responded "we sent a runner to get more brought up!"

"Do you still have powder?!" Luigi asked.

The soldier nodded and said "Powder but no ordinance Sir!"

"Load them up with rocks if you have to!" Luigi yelled "just get them firing!"

"Yes Sir" the soldier responded with a salute. Luigi returned the salute as the soldier turned to the others and said "gather rocks boys. Anything we can shoot!"

Luigi moved on as the artillerists began loading. He came to a small group of soldiers laying flat on their stomachs in the trench with their abandoned lever action rifles and muskets piled next to them.

"Get up!" Luigi yelled "we need everyone firing!"

"No!" one yelled back.

"I can't fight anymore. I'm terrified" another yelled "this dirt is all that stands between us and the Overthere!"

"We're all scared!" Luigi said "you think I'm not terrified? But WE are all that stand between the loyalists and our capitol! We have t-" He stopped when a bullet tore through edge of the sleeve of his coat.

One of the soldiers on the ground gasped and yelled "Luigi…I mean captain! You're hit!"

Luigi checked his shoulder only finding a graze and put his finger through the hole in his coat. "…..just….just a scratch" he said.

Then he seemed to snap back.

"Get up!" he yelled "we need everyone in the fight! Get up now!"

He stood up, seeming fearless in the fire or simply ignoring the bullets as he pulled the soldiers up, keeping them behind the logs and shoving the rifles into their arms.

"Just aim and shoot!" he yelled "aim and shoot!"

The soldiers began firing as Luigi ran back down the line to continue checking the troops.

"He seems as steady as a rock in battle!" A soldier yelled after witnessing the incident.

"The toughest rock in flower fields!"

Another yelled. Soldiers began cheering Luigi as he made his way down the line.

"Keep firing!" Luigi yelled "keep firing! Their lines will start to weaken!"

Luigi raised his binoculars and saw loyalist reinforcements beginning to come into view in the distance.

He ran back to the artillery battery and asked "Have they brought the ordinance up?!"

"Yes sir!" the soldier replied.

"How many guns are functional?!" He asked.

"Five!" The soldier replied "there's another battery down the line!"

"Get fire on those incoming reinforcements!" Luigi yelled "slow them down! Get a message to the other battery to fire on the reinforcements as well but I want half of their available cannons to focus on the enemy guns! Silence their cannons!"

"Yes Sir!" The soldier replied.

Luigi Brought up his Binoculars again.

"Gotta break their line now" he thought "if those reinforcements get here they'll overrun us."

He ran down the line to a Seargent he saw earlier.

"Seargent?!" He yelled.

The Seargent turned towards him.

"Mike?" Luigi asked after seeing the soldier's face.

The soldier looked at him for a minute before his eyes widened "Luigi? You made captain?" Mike asked.

"Never mind that now" Luigi said "you're the only other officer I can find."

"What about Major Briggs?" Mike asked.

"He's down" Luigi said "we need to attack. I want you to take B and E Companies from Brigg's force and take their artillery. Our guns should suppress them."

"I can do it" Mike said "what about you?"

"I'm taking the rest of the infantry across to their lines" he said" We need to drive them back before the reinforcements arrive."

"That's the Mushroom Kingdom's Eastern Army!" Mike said "Your brother is a colonel in that army."

"I'm praying his regiment isn't here" Luigi said "take those guns."

Mike nodded and said "good luck."

"Same to you" Luigi said.

They both walked away. Luigi ran over to the fallen Major and dropped his rifle then grabbed the Major's sword.

He raised is as he yelled "Get ready men!"

Soldiers began to look at him.

"Let's go get 'em!" he yelled "We're gonna charge!" He climbed out of the trenches among the gunfire and yelled "CHARGE!" as he ran forward.

Seeing this the other soldiers began piling out of the trenches and following him.

A bullet hit Luigi in the arm, he groaned as he kept running and yelled "Come on! They'll run if we press them! Don't let up!"

The rest of the army began climbing out of the trenches and followed as Luigi saw two companies following Mike towards the enemy artillery. As Luigi closed in on the Loyalist line, he heard the crack of a pistol shot and a bullet tore into his hip. Luigi stopped and leaned on the sword as he looked where the shot came from. As the smoke cleared, he froze for a few seconds when he saw the red bandanna tied around the neck of the officer that shot him below a thick moustache and piercing blue eyes. Clarity hitting him in the heat of battle as a rush of emotional pain poured into his heart. Obviously not recognizing who he had just shot because of the beard that had grown on Luigi's face from months in the fields.

Mario turned to his troops and yelled "we have to push them back! Let's-a go!"

Luigi was jolted back to reality as one of his soldiers grabbed his arm and said "we need to get you to the rear, sir! You're hit!"

Luigi yanked his arm free and pointed the sword towards the enemy line as he yelled "Push forward! We'll drive them all the way back to Peach's Castle! Forward!"

He ran forward the best he could as the entire rebel line rushed forward with him. The loyalist line began to falter when he heard a cheer and saw a flag with a fire flower on it waving above the loyalist cannons as the Mushroom flag was lowered.

Luigi grabbed a nearby soldier and said "Get over there and tell them to turn the cannons around! Use the enemy's guns against them!"

The soldier nodded and ran to the cannons, soon they were firing at the Mushroom Kingdom troops. The loyalist line finally began to break just as the reinforcements were managing to get past the artillery barrage. The retreating soldiers and ran straight through their incoming reinforcements without stopping, leaving them to do little but try to cover the retreat and fall back. The rebel soldiers began to pursue the retreating force until heavy artillery massed on the hills behind the Loyalist position made the pursuit too costly. The rebels began to cheer as the loyalists ran and prisoners were rounded up.

"Let's hear it for the Rock of Flower Fields!" A soldier yelled as the cheers got louder.

Luigi walked over and sat on an ammunition box by the captured cannons, he was almost immediately knocked off of it by a bullet to the shoulder fired by a loyalist sharp shooter.

"Luigi?!" Mike yelled as he ran over. He turned to the others and yelled "get a medic up here! NOW!"

"Get suppressing artillery fire on the forests" Luigi said "drive the sharpshooters and stragglers back." "

I'll take care of it" Mike said "just stay with me."

"Help me up" Luigi said "I'm alright."

"The medic is coming" Mike said as he helped Luigi sit up "just wait for him. The enemy's gone."

The captured cannons were turned towards the patch of trees where the shot came from and the first cannon went off.

Luigi shot up in bed covered in sweat. Daisy quickly lit a lamp and sat up next to him as he looked around.

"Flower Fields?" she asked.

"That battle replays in my head daily" he said "now in my dreams too?"

"It was one of the rebellion's greatest victories" Daisy said "and it was because of you."

"It was also the day my brother shot me" Luigi added "that hurt more than any bullet."

"He didn't know who he was firing at. Barely anybody recognized you with that beard, especially in the heat of battle. He was just doing his job" Daisy said "firing at a rebel officer, trying to break up the charge."

"I know" Luigi said "but how do you bring that up to your brother?" he lifted his nightshirt and looked at the scar on his hip "I carry a reminder in my body. That bullet still hurts at times"

"You'll find a way to work it out" Daisy said "you and Mario always come back to each other, right?"

"I hope we can this time" Luigi said "tomorrow he wants to go looking for the Koopa Gang. Maybe we can talk on the trail."

"That's the spirit" Daisy said "now come on, try to get some rest."
