"The drought was the very worst
When the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst
It was months and months of back and forth
You're still all over me"
"I'm gonna die if I don't kiss you right now."
"I've got you."
"You're all mine"
- SAMATHA? Are you listening?
Liz screamed from the platform in the center of the room. Sam blinked twice and looked up to hee friend.
- I am.
- So what do you think?
- About what? - Sam asked clueless.
Liz sighed deeply, stepping down to the floor and saying to the lady who was accompaning them.
- I'll try another one.
The lady went out of the room smiling. Sam put her flute of champagne down on a nearby table and stood.
- I'm sorry, Liz. I've been out of orbit this morning. You look beautiful.
- You say that to every freaking dress I try on!
- And I mean it. You look wonderful in all of them.
Sam took Liz's hands in hers. Liz sighed again.
- The purpose is to help me choose, Sam. Not making me more confused.
As the store lady brought in some more dress options, Sam sat back and took more champagne. Liz walked out and returned a couple of minutes later in another dress. And another and another. Sam was trying hard to pay attention, but her mind kept wondering to last night. She wasnt sure what part she was more embarrased about. If confessing all her feelings to Abe or having the best orgasm she probably ever had, naked at the beach.
Liz took a deep breath and let her shoulders down.
- I don't think any of these is the right one.
- That's just the first store. We have several others to visit.
- I know. I've just thought I would be more practical about it.
- There's nothing less practical than a wedding dress, Liz.
Liz smoothed out the dress bodice, turning to her side.
- Do you think it will ever be you?
Sam snorted.
- Oh come on! Would you like to try one on?
- Of course not! Why would I?
- Just for fun. And would help me see it better. - Liz grinned at her through the mirror.
- Not for all tea in China. We have very different definitions of fun.
- Why not?
- Because... I don't even have a boyfriend!
Liz laughed.
- You don't?
- You know I don't.
- So you and Abe aren't official, yet?
Sam took a deep gulp of her flute.
- I don't know. No.
- Dont you think he will propose to you?
Sam choked, the champgne going up her nose.
- Will it be that bad?
- Liz. We're not even in a relationship yet. We are taking things slow and I'm not sure I'm ready for any of it.
- Come on. You guys love each other. Why keep holding it back?
Sam looked startled.
- Besides, is this what you call taking it slow?
Sam's face got red.
- I don't know what you mean.
- Your tired face this morning and the way you keep blushing while deep in thought says you know exactly what I mean.
- Okay! I'll try one on. If that will make you shut it.
Liz just laughed.
Later that night, and after three more shops. Sam and Liz returned to Abe's house. A gentle breeze was flying and a wonderful smell reached them before they could get inside.
The children, Abe and Justin were at the kitchen cooking. Or trying to. Emma, Blake and Hellboy were out in the yard, talking around a barbecue grill.
- How was it? - Abe asked when they enter. Sam sat by the kitchen balcony and Liz on the couch. Emma saw them and walked in.
- Horrible. I think my skin is comming off from all the dresses I put on.
Sam laughed.
- Well. I loved it. I just sat back and drank champagne all day.
Liz sighed.
- That's not all you did. Who wants to see Sam in a wedding dress?
Abe froze in place, but nobody noticed. Not even Sam who turned to Liz to rant. Emma and Anna came up to Liz's phone, followed by Blake who was holding a beer in his hand.
- I just did it so she would stop nagging at me. - Sam rolled her eyes and took a beer Justin just offered her.
- And as the bride, I get to have all my wishes met. - Liz says.
- Wow, S. You look good in it.
She rolled her eyes.
- She does! White suits your complexion, Sam. While, I look horrible in it. You will be a beautiful bride someday.
Later that night, after eating hamburguers and talking, Sam noticed Abe quiet. Too quiet. While their friends were doing the dishes and cleaning the grill, Sam found him sitting on a chair in the front porch.
She walked to him and sat on his lap, he looked surprised but held her close by the waist.
- Am I too heavy? - she asks.
- No. Why you always think you're too heavy?
- Because I am. I've got way out of shape after living the B.P.R.D.
He chuckled.
- Nonsense. If anything you've gotten way more beautiful.
Sam blushed and snuggled up to him. She looked back at him while resting on his shoulder.
- Why are you out here alone?
- Nothing, darling. Just intrusive thoughts. Everything is well now.
- Don't let all the wedding talk get to you.
He frowned.
- Why would it?
- Well, because besides of what you think, you are a man. And you lot get weird about this stuff.
He just squeezed her tighter.
- While you, woman, like this stuff?
- No. At least not me. I hate shopping and dresses. But don't tell Liz.
- What do you mean? You wear dresses all the time!
- No, I don't.
- Yes, you do.
- Well, they are practical.
- Well, indeed. - he said while taking his hand up her thigh.
- Hey! - Sam held his hand laughing. - That's not what I mean.
- I don't know why you dont like dresses, you look beautiful in most of them.
- Most? - she turned to him.
- Yes, most. On the others, you look spectacular.
She laughed and put her hands behind his neck.
- Good answer.
She smiled, noticing the brooding lines living his face. Stooding up, she pulled her dress a bit up her thighs before straddling his legs.
- I don't like dresses because they are unpractical for most activities like fighting demons or running from monsters. But they indeed are handy in other situations.
Sam closed her eyes and went for his lips, when someone called them out.
- We are leaving.
Liz came out to the porch to say goodbye and found Sam standing a few feet apart from Abe. They hugged and exchanged some words about appoitments while HB talked to Abe.
"Rain came pouring down
When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe"
