The week of intense training had done wonders for the Gremory peerage. Each member had grown stronger, more focused, and ready for the challenge ahead. But as they gathered in the ORC club room, the weight of the looming battle hung in the air like an oppressive fog.
Rias sat at her desk with Akeno, both sipping tea that Akeno had prepared. The warm, fragrant aroma did little to calm the tension that lingered. Koneko sat off to the side, slipping on her custom MMA-style gloves with the cat paw design, her small hands tightening into fists as she flexed her fingers. Issei sat hunched forward in his chair, beads of sweat dripping down his face as he stared at the floor. He'd called Ann earlier, letting her know he would be busy tonight, and the thought of not being able to talk to her gnawed at the back of his mind.
Asia, ever the optimist, sat nearby with her small dragon familiar snuggled in her arms. The creature cooed contentedly, pressing closer to her chest as she gently stroked its smooth scales. Her nervous energy seemed to dissipate slightly as she focused on her familiar, its warmth calming her.
In the far corner, Leo sat on a wooden bench, wrapping his hands with thick tape like a boxer preparing for a prizefight. His calm yet intense expression was unshaken as he carefully secured the tape around his wrists, his strong fingers tugging it tight before biting down on the end. The sound of tape tearing filled the room, drawing the eyes of everyone.
With a sharp exhale, Leo stood, pulling off his blazer and shirt in one swift motion. His lean, muscular torso was now bare, the hard lines of his body a testament to the rigorous training he had undergone. His muscles, larger and more defined than ever, seemed to ripple as he folded his clothing neatly and set it on Rias's desk.
Koneko's sharp amber eyes flicked up, and she raised an eyebrow. "What's with the strip show, Leo?" she asked in her usual deadpan tone.
Akeno tilted her head with a sly smile. "My, my, such a gentleman, making sure not to ruin his uniform. I'll admit, I don't mind the view," she teased, her voice dripping with sultry mischief.
Issei gawked, his gaze bouncing between the others and Leo. "Bro, are you seriously flexing right now?" he joked, though his tone carried a hint of envy. "You're like a damn tank."
Leo smirked, rolling his shoulders as he leaned against the wall. "Nah, just don't want to trouble Sona. She's got enough on her plate without me needing a replacement uniform." His tone was casual, but there was an undertone of focus in his voice.
Before anyone could respond, the door to the club room opened, revealing Sona and Tsubaki. The two entered quietly, with Tsubaki closing the door behind them. Sona's eyes were cast downward as if lost in thought, but when she looked up, her calm, composed mask cracked ever so slightly as her gaze landed on Leo.
Her glasses slid down her nose slightly as her cheeks turned pink. "Why is Leo shirtless?" she asked, her usual stoicism faltering.
Tsubaki, who rarely displayed her emotions, couldn't help the faint blush that graced her face as well.
Rias glanced at Leo with a sly smile. "Well, my darling here doesn't want to ruin his uniform," she said, a playful lilt in her voice. "Besides, I don't mind the view."
Sona adjusted her glasses hastily, clearing her throat. "I see…" she said, trying to regain her composure.
Issei, however, wasn't about to let this moment go unnoticed. "Wait a second," he said, his face twisted in confusion. "The student council president and vice-president? What are you two doing here?"
Rias interlocked her fingers and propped up her chin, her smile calm but tinged with confidence. "Rating games are broadcast to both families involved. Sona and Tsubaki are here to oversee it."
Sona nodded, her expression becoming serious. "That's correct. I volunteered for this. It is, after all, your first game, Rias."
Rias's confident smirk deepened. "Then I'll make sure it's a game worth broadcasting. I wouldn't want to insult our rivalry, after all."
Before Sona could respond, a sudden flash of brilliant white light illuminated the room. As it faded, Grayfia appeared, her stoic expression as calm and regal as ever. Her silver hair shimmered in the soft light, and her sharp crimson eyes scanned the room, taking in each member of the peerage.
"Is everyone ready?" Grayfia asked, her voice even yet commanding.
Rias nodded, setting her teacup down. "We're ready."
Leo crossed his arms, his deep blue eyes narrowing as he leaned forward. "Any idea where we'll be fighting?"
Akeno chuckled softly, her violet eyes gleaming with excitement. "An alternate space, created just for the game. Don't worry—you can go all out. It's disposed of afterward."
Leo smirked, rolling his neck to loosen the tension in his muscles. "Good. I've been itching for a real fight."
Sona glanced at Rias, her expression softening for a moment. "I'll be in the student council room managing the broadcast. I wish you the best of luck, Rias."
"Thank you, Sona," Rias replied with a small smile. "But make sure the broadcast is fair, okay?"
Sona adjusted her glasses again, a faint glint of humor in her eyes. "Of course. Though I doubt the match will be fair with him involved." She nodded toward Leo, her voice calm but tinged with intrigue, before turning and leaving with Tsubaki.
Grayfia stepped forward, her eyes lingering on Leo for a moment before addressing the group. "The great devil Lucifer will be watching."
The room was heavy with the gravity of what was about to transpire, but Rias's quiet sigh cut through the silence.
"I see," she murmured, her eyes distant and thoughtful. "My brother is also…" She trailed off, her expression growing serious.
Issei, Asia, and Leo froze, their gazes snapping toward her, the weight of her unfinished statement catching them off guard.
"Woah, hold up!" Issei exclaimed, leaning forward with wide eyes. "Are you telling me your brother is THE devil?! Or am I just hearing things wrong?" His voice cracked slightly at the sheer absurdity of what he thought he'd just heard.
Kiba chuckled softly, sliding his sword into its scabbard with practiced ease. "No," he said, glancing at Issei with a knowing smirk. "Her brother is one of the Satans."
Issei's face paled instantly. "Wait, what? Your brother is really one of the Satans?!" he repeated, his voice rising in pitch as he stared at Rias in disbelief.
Rias kept her faraway gaze, her fingers lightly gripping the armrest of her chair. "Yes," she replied quietly, her tone calm but firm.
Leo let out a long exhale, dragging his hand down his face. The realization hit him like a freight train. "Sirzechs Lucifer, known as the Crimson Satan. That's her brother, isn't it?" he asked, already knowing the answer.
Kiba nodded, confirming Leo's suspicion. "Sirzechs succeeded the previous Satan Lucifer after the war. He's one of the Four Great Satans now."
Leo groaned, leaning against the wall with a furrowed brow. "So that's why Rias is the heiress to the Gremory family," he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Man, he's going to rip me apart for getting involved in a royal marriage..." His voice trailed off as his mind raced through worst-case scenarios.
Rias turned her gaze toward him, her expression softening as she gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry too much, Leo," she said gently. "I'm sure my brother will love you."
Leo raised an eyebrow at her, clearly not convinced. But before he could say anything, his eyes caught Grayfia's. She had remained silent in the corner, her crimson gaze locked on him with a searching intensity. Her face betrayed no emotion, but there was a faint redness to her cheeks that didn't go unnoticed.
Suddenly, a large red glyph materialized in the center of the room, casting the ORC in a brilliant crimson glow. The intricate runes of the magic circle shimmered and pulsed, filling the room with a faint hum of energy.
"It's about time," Grayfia said calmly, her voice cutting through the air like a blade.
Each member of the Gremory peerage reacted in their own way to the sudden appearance of the glyph.
Issei took an instinctive step back, beads of sweat forming on his brow. "W-We're really doing this, huh?" he muttered, gripping the back of a chair for support.
Asia clutched her small dragon familiar closer to her chest, the tiny creature nuzzling against her as if to comfort her. "I hope we'll all be okay," she whispered nervously.
Kiba tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword, his expression calm but focused. "This is what we've been training for," he said quietly, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Koneko adjusted her gloves, her stoic expression never wavering. "Good," she said simply, her golden eyes gleaming with determination.
Leo, however, was a different story. He clenched and unclenched his fists, his jaw tightening as his glowing blue-green eyes flickered with an almost primal energy. The Berserker roared in the back of his mind, fueling his excitement. His heart raced, not with fear, but with anticipation. A wide, battle-hungry grin spread across his face. "Finally," he muttered under his breath, his voice low and eager.
Rias rose from her seat with an air of authority, her large chair scraping against the wooden floor as she stood. Her expression was calm and composed, the mask of a leader firmly in place. "Let's go," she said, her voice steady and commanding.
The group followed her lead, gathering around the large red teleportation glyph. One by one, they stepped into the circle, each disappearing in a flash of crimson light.
Leo stood at the edge of the glyph, taking a deep breath as he glanced around the now-empty room. A small, determined smirk tugged at his lips. "Showtime," he muttered before stepping into the light.
A bright, searing red enveloped him, forcing him to shield his eyes. When the light finally dimmed, he lowered his arm and found himself standing back in the ORC. His brow furrowed in confusion. "Wait... What the hell?"
"Oh, that's weird. Did I screw it up again?" Issei asked, his voice tinged with panic as he looked around.
Before anyone could answer, Grayfia's calm, authoritative voice echoed through the room, reverberating as though it came from all directions.
"Everyone. I am Grayfia, servant of the Gremory family and appointed judge between the Gremory and Phoenix families. Taking Lady Rias and Lord Riser's opinions into consideration, we have prepared an exact replica of Kuoh Academy, the school Lady Rias attends in the human world, as the battlefield."
Leo's eyes widened slightly as he walked to the window. The sky beyond was a breathtaking swirl of greens, blues, and purples, reminiscent of the auroras of the far north. The colors danced and shimmered, casting an otherworldly glow across the replica of the academy grounds.
"Looks like we're not in Kansas anymore," Leo muttered, half to himself, as he leaned against the window.
Asia and Issei joined him, their faces pale as they took in the surreal sight.
"Okay, I'm totally having one of those 'I just pissed myself' moments right now," Issei said, his voice shaky.
"It reminds me of the northern lights," Leo said absently, his eyes tracing the ethereal colors as they ebbed and flowed like waves in the sky.
The sky was alive with a magical energy, its hues shifting seamlessly from vibrant emerald to deep sapphire, interwoven with streaks of radiant amethyst. The swirling patterns seemed to pulse in time with an unseen rhythm, casting an almost hypnotic effect on those who gazed upon it.
"This is an exact replica of the school," Akeno said with a smile, her violet eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Man," Issei muttered, running a hand through his hair. "Just how amazing is devil magic?"
Grayfia's voice echoed again, snapping them out of their thoughts. "Both parties have been teleported to their main base. Lady Rias, your main base is the Occult Research Club room in the old schoolhouse. Lord Riser, your home base will be located in the Principal's Office in the new schoolhouse. Thus, pawns can be promoted when they manage to invade the enemy's schoolhouse."
Issei cracked his knuckles, a spark of confidence lighting his expression. His trademark smirk spread wide as he proclaimed, "So, all I need to do is reach the new schoolhouse, and boom—promotion! I'll be as powerful as a Queen, the strongest piece on the board!"
Leo, leaning casually against the wall, chuckled and gave Issei a firm pat on the back. "I like your enthusiasm, man, but... that's a terrible idea," he said bluntly.
Issei froze mid-smirk, the corners of his mouth twitching downwards in confusion. "Wait, what? What do you mean?" he asked, tilting his head like a perplexed puppy.
Leo's lips curled into a knowing grin, his sharp green-blue eyes flickering with amusement. "Dude, come on. I know you've got brains under all that adrenaline. Think about it—do you really think you can just waltz into Riser's base, promote, and waltz right back out without a fight? That's like painting a giant 'Kill Me' target on your back."
Issei's shoulders sagged, his excitement quickly fizzling out. "Damn it… why are you always right?" he muttered, crossing his arms and glaring half-heartedly at Leo.
Leo shrugged, his grin widening. "I'm not always right. I'm just never wrong," he teased.
Across the room, Akeno giggled softly, her violet eyes sparkling with amusement. Her voice, warm and melodic, carried a teasing edge. "Leo, you're such a bad influence," she mused.
Meanwhile, Rias stood behind her desk, her crimson hair glowing under the soft lighting of the ORC clubroom. Her piercing gaze was fixed on the map spread across the desk—a detailed layout of Kuoh Academy. Her mind worked like clockwork, calculating strategies and tactics as the others bantered around her.
Kiba stepped forward, his calm and composed voice cutting through the chatter. "Riser will likely send his Pawns to infiltrate our territory to promote. If we're not careful, they could overwhelm us." He folded his arms, his brow furrowing. "And we should expect his base to be heavily fortified."
Rias gave a small nod, her fingers brushing lightly over the map as she processed his words. Her sharp eyes scanned the layout, mentally piecing together the moves of an invisible chess game.
As they spoke, Koneko silently moved around the room, her petite figure almost blending into the background. In her hands, she carried small glowing red orbs, which she handed to each member of the group. Akeno accepted hers gracefully, the orb dissolving into her ear in a shimmer of light. Issei, however, stared at the floating orb in her outstretched hand like it was about to explode.
"Uh… it's not gonna blow my head off or anything, right?" Issei asked nervously, holding his hands up defensively.
Koneko's golden eyes narrowed slightly, her voice flat. "If it does, we'll finally have some peace and quiet."
Leo snorted, barely holding back a laugh. As Koneko approached him, she held out an orb without a word. Leo took it but examined it closely, turning it over in his hand with mock seriousness. "So… do I swallow this, or is it supposed to go up my nose?" he asked, feigning cluelessness.
Koneko rolled her eyes, though a faint smirk tugged at her lips. "In your ear, unless you want it to fry your brain," she deadpanned.
Leo chuckled and leaned in closer. "You know, you're kinda scary when you're being helpful."
"Good," she muttered, her tone soft but sharp as she walked away.
Once the orbs were distributed, Rias looked up from the map with a small smile. "These orbs are communication devices," she explained. "They'll let us stay in contact with each other during the game."
"Sweet!" Issei exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face. "It's like a magical walkie-talkie!"
Before anyone could respond, the deep, resonant toll of a bell echoed through the room, shaking the walls and sending a jolt through everyone present. The sound was followed by Grayfia's calm, authoritative voice reverberating through the air.
"The game begins now," Grayfia announced, her voice laced with an unshakable calm that added weight to the moment.
The room fell silent. Rias's expression sharpened as she straightened, her presence commanding. A faint smile tugged at her lips as she glanced at her peerage, her confidence radiating like an aura. "Let's begin," she said firmly.
Leo cracked his knuckles, the sound echoing in the tense stillness of the room. A grin spread across his face, sharp and wild. His muscles tensed like a coiled spring, the anticipation of battle igniting the Berserker's fire within him. "Finally," he muttered under his breath, his voice tinged with exhilaration.
Issei ran a hand through his hair, his usual bravado tinged with nervous energy. "Okay, okay… this is happening. Deep breaths. I can do this," he muttered, half to himself.
Asia clasped her hands together, silently praying, though her trembling fingers betrayed her anxiety. "Please let us all be safe…" she whispered softly.
Kiba adjusted the hilt of his sword, his calm smile unwavering. "Let's do this," he said, his voice steady and resolute.
Rias looked down at the map once more, her finger tracing a path toward the new school building. "The enemy's main base is the new schoolhouse. The fastest route would be across the schoolyard, but…" She trailed off, her gaze lingering on the open expanse.
"…we'd be sitting ducks," Koneko said bluntly, her sharp eyes narrowing.
Rias nodded. "Exactly. It's too risky."
"What about the track field?" Issei suggested, pointing to a route at the map's edge. "We could loop around the back."
Leo clicked his tongue, leaning over the map with a critical eye. "Too obvious," he said. "Riser might be arrogant, but he's not stupid. He'd probably expect that."
Rias glanced at him and gave a small nod, her gaze shifting to another point on the map. She tapped the swimming team's clubhouse near the track field. "I expect their Rooks and Knights to be stationed here. It's a classic tactic, but it's effective."
"The gym, then," Kiba interjected, pointing to the building at the map's center. "It's close to both bases and gives us a strong foothold."
Rias considered the suggestion, her mind racing through possible scenarios. "The gym is like the center of a chessboard," she said finally. "Controlling it would give us an advantage."
Akeno smiled, her voice serene. "It's a solid plan."
Rias looked at Koneko and Leo. "You two will lead the charge."
Leo smirked, rolling his shoulders. "Ready when you are."
Asia stood off to the side, her green eyes fixed on the floor, her hands trembling as a faint tremor of anxiety coursed through her. The faint smile she usually wore was nowhere to be found. Instead, her lips pressed into a tight line, betraying her inner turmoil. Her voice, barely above a whisper, broke the silence. "Fighting is… difficult, huh?"
Issei glanced at her, the usual playful glint in his eyes replaced by something softer—genuine concern. He stepped closer, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Hey, don't worry about it," he said, his tone warm and steady. "We've got this. All you need to do is believe in Rias and follow her orders. And don't forget—Leo and I are here to protect you. Everyone else is, too."
Asia's trembling eased as she looked up, her worried expression meeting Issei's confident gaze. His smile, small but earnest, warmed her, and the tension in her chest began to dissipate. Slowly, she mirrored his smile, her voice soft but steadier now. "You're right. Thank you, Issei."
Across the room, Rias's voice broke the moment as she straightened her posture, her tone clear and commanding. "First, we need to secure the defensive line." Her sharp crimson gaze turned toward Kiba and Koneko. "Yuuto, Koneko, set up traps in the forest."
Kiba nodded, his signature polite smile stretching across his face as he gave a two-fingered salute. "Understood, President."
Koneko's golden eyes flicked up to meet Rias's as she gave a firm nod. "Roger." With her usual quiet efficiency, she summoned her familiar. A soft purple glyph materialized in her palms, glowing faintly before a small, snow-white cat appeared. The feline purred contentedly as it rubbed against Koneko's hands, then meowed before climbing her arm and settling atop her head, its tail swaying gently.
Koneko turned toward the door, her expression stoic but resolute. "Come on, Shiro," she said to her familiar before following Kiba out of the room.
"We'll be going now," Kiba added, his voice crisp and professional as he exited with Koneko in tow.
Rias's attention shifted to Akeno, who stood nearby, her violet eyes watching the exchange with quiet amusement. "Akeno," Rias said, her tone softening but retaining its authority, "once the traps are set, use illusionary magic on the forest and the sky above it."
Akeno's lips curved into her trademark playful smile. She gave a graceful bow, her tone light but respectful. "As you wish, President."
Without another word, Akeno turned and left, her steps silent but purposeful. The room seemed to grow quieter with her departure, the atmosphere thick with anticipation.
Now, only Issei, Asia, Leo, and Rias remained. Issei shifted on his feet, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. "Um… President? What about us? What should we do?"
Rias regarded him thoughtfully for a moment before turning to Asia. "Asia, you're our recovery and support. Stay here with me. It'd be pointless to put you in harm's way."
Asia blinked, her cheeks tinged pink as she nodded quickly. "Y-Yes, ma'am. Understood."
Rias turned her attention back to Issei, a calculating gleam in her eyes. Her lips quirked slightly as she tapped a finger against her chin. Then, she patted her lap, her voice calm and commanding. "As for you, Issei…"
Issei straightened as if he'd been called to attention in the military, his eyes wide with confusion and a touch of panic. "Y-Yes?" he stammered, his voice cracking.
Rias's serene expression didn't waver as she gestured toward her lap again, patting it lightly. "Lie down here."
Issei's jaw dropped, and he froze mid-breath, his face turning beet red. His head snapped toward Leo, his eyes silently begging for rescue. Asia, standing nearby, gasped softly, her hands clasped nervously as her face matched the color of Rias's hair. Meanwhile, Leo, who sat relaxed with his arms crossed, chuckled at Issei's obvious discomfort.
"What?" Issei croaked, his voice an octave too high.
Rias giggled lightly, her voice soothing as she explained. "When I resurrected you, I used all eight Pawn pieces. Your body couldn't handle that much power at once, so I sealed it under multiple layers of spells. I need to release a portion of that spell now. So, please, lie down."
Issei looked back at Leo, his expression filled with desperation. "Leo…"
Leo glanced up from inspecting the tape around his hands, meeting Issei's panicked gaze with a smirk. "Relax, man. It's fine. Just listen to Rias."
Issei hesitated, the inner conflict evident in his furrowed brows and darting eyes. He couldn't shake the guilt gnawing at him—like he was betraying Ann by doing something so intimate with another woman. And what if Leo secretly resented him for this? But Leo's steady gaze reassured him, and with a resigned sigh, he turned back to Rias.
"Uh… okay…" he muttered reluctantly, shuffling over like a man walking to his doom. With stiff, awkward movements, he lowered his head onto her lap, his cheeks burning with embarrassment.
The moment his head rested against her soft thighs, a sudden surge of energy pulsed through his body. His chest tightened, his heart pounding so fast he thought it might burst. The sensation was overwhelming, a mix of warmth and pressure that coursed through every nerve. His fingers twitched involuntarily as the spell's power flowed through him, unlocking something deep within.
After a few moments, the intensity faded. Issei slowly sat up, pressing a hand against his chest as his breathing steadied. His wide eyes darted to Rias. "Woah… what did you do to me?"
Rias smiled gently, her crimson eyes glowing with warmth. "I released a small portion of the spell I cast when I resurrected you. Right after your resurrection, your body couldn't handle the full power of eight Pawn pieces, so I locked it up in layers of spells."
"That explains the weird feeling just now…" Issei muttered, his voice trailing off as he glanced at his trembling hands, slowly clenching them into fists. "Thanks, President."
Rias's smile widened slightly. "You'll need every bit of strength you can muster for the battle ahead."
Leo smirked from his seat, leaning back casually. "See? Told you it was fine."
Issei rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress the small smile creeping across his face. For the first time since entering the game, he felt a flicker of hope.
"Leo, I'd like you to sit here as well," Rias said softly, patting the spot beside her on the couch. Her crimson eyes glimmered with a mixture of warmth and resolve as she gestured for him.
Issei hesitated for a moment before awkwardly shuffling out of the way, moving to stand near Rias's desk. Asia quietly took the small sofa across from Rias, fiddling with the hem of her dress as her gaze darted between Leo and Rias. Leo rose from his seat, stretching his arms briefly before walking around the coffee table. He sank into the spot next to Rias, his broad shoulders seeming almost out of place against the elegance of the ornate couch.
Rias wasted no time inching closer, the rustle of her skirt the only sound in the room. Leo quirked an eyebrow, smirking slightly. "You're not plotting something devious, are you, President?" he teased, his tone playful but curious.
Her lips curved into a small smile, her crimson locks cascading over her shoulders as she leaned slightly toward him. "Devious? Not quite. I'm simply tending to my responsibilities as your King," she replied, her tone smooth yet tinged with a teasing lilt.
"And what responsibility involves sitting so close I can count your freckles?" Leo countered, his smirk growing. His teasing tone didn't mask the subtle blush creeping up his neck.
"Oh, you'll find out soon enough," Rias murmured, her voice dipping low as she leaned in just a bit more. The space between them vanished in a heartbeat, her scent—a mix of roses and cinnamon—surrounding him.
Before Leo could respond, Rias gently cupped his face with both hands. Her palms were soft, her touch featherlight, yet the intensity of her gaze locked him in place. She shifted onto his lap with effortless grace, her eyes searching his. "I'm going to undo a spell I placed on you when I resurrected you," she whispered. Her voice was calm, but there was a flicker of vulnerability in her eyes.
Leo blinked, caught off guard. "A spell? What kind of—"
His words were cut off as Rias leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was firm yet tender, filled with an almost electric intensity. Her hands slid into his hair, tugging him closer as if trying to pour every ounce of her determination into him.
Leo's eyes widened as a strange sensation erupted within him. It was as if a storm had been unleashed in his chest—a crackling surge of energy coursing through his veins. The warmth of her lips seemed to ignite something dormant within him, a power he hadn't known was there.
Inside his mind, the Berserker roared with laughter, a booming sound like thunder across a stormy sky. "Finally! I knew this King of yours had some fire in her!" the ancient warrior's voice bellowed.
Leo's heart pounded in sync with the faint crackle of lightning that echoed in his ears. His muscles tensed, his breath hitching as the energy flowed through him. It wasn't painful—if anything, it was exhilarating. Like a jolt of electricity awakening every fiber of his being.
"What... what is this feeling?" Leo thought, his mind racing even as he melted into the kiss.
Rias slowly broke the connection, her lips lingering just a moment longer before pulling away. A thin strand of saliva connected them briefly before it disappeared. She smiled sweetly, her forehead pressing gently against his as her thumbs brushed along his cheeks. "That's better," she murmured.
Leo, still dazed, managed to find his voice. "What... what just happened?"
Rias chuckled softly, brushing a lock of his hair out of his face. "When I resurrected you, I used one of my Rook pieces. But something unexpected happened. The piece wasn't normal—it mutated when it entered your soul."
Leo blinked, confusion flickering in his glowing eyes. "Mutated? What do you mean?"
"The piece wasn't just accepted by your body—it fused with something already inside of you," Rias explained, her voice patient yet firm. "The power that resides within you isn't just the power of a Rook. It's... something ancient. Something primal."
Leo's brow furrowed as he processed her words. "So... I'm not just a Rook? I've got some ancient wild card in me too?"
Rias nodded, her smile softening. "Exactly. That power is why you've been able to push your limits so far in training. But it's also dangerous if left unchecked. You need to control it, Leo."
He exhaled deeply, the weight of her revelation sinking in. But then his signature smirk returned, determination flickering in his eyes. "Control it, huh? I can do that. And don't worry, Rias—I won't let you down. I'll show Riser exactly what I'm made of."
Rias's smile widened, her gaze brimming with pride. "I'm counting on you, my adorable Leo." She ran a hand through his hair one last time before leaning back.
The soft hum of magic filled the air, and Akeno's voice echoed through their communication orbs. "President, can you hear me?"
Rias raised a hand to her ear, her expression shifting to one of focus. "Yes, I hear you."
"The preparations are complete," Akeno responded.
Rias stood, her crimson locks swaying as she turned toward the map. Leo followed suit, his muscles coiled with anticipation. He could feel the crackling energy in his veins, the Berserker within him roaring to be unleashed.
"Then here's the game plan," Rias said, her tone sharp and commanding.
The scene shifts to the student council room. Sona sat poised at the broadcasting station, her sharp violet eyes glued to the screen displaying the battlefield. Beside her, Tsubaki adjusted the controls, her expression calm yet alert.
"Rias has begun to move," Tsubaki noted, her voice cool and analytical.
Sona leaned forward, her fingers lightly brushing the frame of her glasses. Her gaze was calculating, her mind racing as she analyzed the Gremory team's positioning. "With her limited manpower, defending the base perfectly is impossible. A quick, decisive attack is likely her best option."
Her eyes shifted to Leo on the screen, watching as he walked alongside Issei. There was something about his presence—something raw, untamed, and commanding. It sent a small shiver down her spine.
"This battle may be more unpredictable than I anticipated," Sona murmured to herself, her voice barely audible over the hum of the equipment.
Leo and Issei made their way toward the gym, their footsteps muffled by the soft grass as they joined Koneko, who stood waiting just outside the entrance. The small, white-haired girl glanced at them with her usual stoic expression, though the faintest trace of a smirk tugged at her lips.
"About time," Koneko muttered, folding her arms as Leo and Issei came to a stop beside her.
Before either of them could reply, Rias's voice resonated clearly through their magical transmitters, filling their ears with her calm yet commanding tone.
"Listen closely. Once you enter the gym, you won't be able to avoid a fight. Stick together and follow my orders," Rias instructed firmly.
"Roger," the three replied in unison, their voices hushed but resolute.
"Yuuto, how are things on your end?" Rias asked next.
"All good here. Traps are in place," Kiba's smooth voice replied through the transmitter.
"Akeno, be ready and await my signal," Rias continued.
A gentle giggle echoed in their ears, Akeno's sultry tone filled with confidence. "Of course, President."
Rias's voice returned, this time brimming with an edge of determination meant to rally her peerage. "Commence operation! Remember, our opponent is Riser Phenex—one of the most promising talents among the immortal Phenex clan. But we'll show him what we're made of. Let's kick his ass."
Leo couldn't help the smirk that tugged at his lips as they entered through the back of the gym. The three moved silently, crouching low as they slipped onto the shadowed stage. Thick red velvet curtains draped behind them, shrouding their movements.
From the darkened stage, Issei glanced around, his eyes wide with awe. "Wow… even the inside looks exactly the same," he whispered, marveling at the impeccable recreation of Kuoh Academy's gymnasium.
Leo ignored him, instead peeking around the edge of the curtain. His sharp gaze swept over the dark gym. Four figures darted around the space with alarming speed, their movements fluid and precise. It was difficult to make out their features in the dim light, but their presence alone was enough to put him on edge.
Koneko sniffed the air, her nose twitching faintly. Her golden eyes narrowed. "Enemies," she whispered tersely.
As if on cue, the gymnasium's fluorescent lights flickered on with a blinding intensity, forcing Issei to shield his eyes. A feminine voice, smooth and confident, echoed through the gym.
"I know you're there, Gremory servants. There's no point in hiding," the voice called out.
Issei groaned, lowering his hand from his face. "So much for sneaking in," he muttered, straightening up.
With no use in remaining hidden, the trio stepped out from behind the curtain, their footsteps echoing faintly on the polished wood floor. Standing before them were four women from Riser's peerage, their eyes fixed on the intruders.
Leo's gaze scanned each of them quickly, his mind recalling the brief encounter he'd had with them back in the human world. His focus lingered on the woman who stepped forward, her dark, calculating eyes raking over him with interest.
"Well, look at what we have here," she said, her lips curling into a sly smile. "A pawn, a rook, and…" Her words trailed off as her gaze locked onto Leo, her smirk widening. "Oh, it's you… the hunk."
Koneko's brow twitched at the woman's comment, her fists clenching slightly at her sides.
Leo, however, simply chuckled and inclined his head. "I appreciate the compliment. May I know the names of you fine ladies?" he asked, his voice smooth and unhurried. His grin deepened as he saw the faint blushes that painted their faces in response.
"I-I'm Xuelan," the first woman stammered, caught off guard. She cleared her throat and straightened her posture, attempting to regain her composure. "I'm a Rook under the House of Phoenix."
Xuelan was a striking woman of Chinese descent, her shoulder-length black hair styled with twin buns on either side of her head. Her navy-blue qipao clung tightly to her form, its gold accents catching the light. The daring cut of her dress revealed ample cleavage, though she carried herself with a warrior's poise.
The girl beside her twirled a staff in her hands nervously, her light brown eyes darting between Leo and the floor. "I-I'm Mira… a Pawn," she said shyly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mira had a softer appearance, her blue hair tied into six small ponytails that swayed as she shifted awkwardly. Her red-and-white haori fluttered slightly as she adjusted her grip on her staff, trying to compose herself.
The next two girls stepped forward simultaneously, their turquoise hair bouncing as they grinned at Leo with identical expressions.
"I'm Ile, and I'm a Pawn. Nice to meet you, hot stuff," one of them said with a playful wave.
"And I'm Nel, also a Pawn," the other added with a giggle. "Cutie!"
The two girls wore matching gym uniforms—white T-shirts with blue accents and snug black spats that clung to their petite frames. Their identical appearances and mischievous smiles gave them an almost doll-like quality.
Leo raised an eyebrow at the twins, his smirk unwavering. "Ile and Nel, huh? I'll try to remember who's who. No promises, though."
Koneko shot him a sidelong glance, her golden eyes narrowing. "Flirting with the enemy now?" she asked dryly.
Leo grinned and winked at her. "It's called strategy," he quipped, though the playful gleam in his eyes betrayed his enjoyment of her reaction.
The tension in the gym thickened as the members of Riser's peerage steadied themselves, their playful expressions hardening. Leo cracked his knuckles, his grin morphing into something more feral. Beside him, Issei balled his fists, and Koneko adjusted her gloves, her stoic demeanor giving way to quiet determination.
Koneko's golden eyes narrowed as she observed Xuelan, her gaze steady and calculating. With a calm air, she tightened the strap of her glove, speaking in her usual monotone voice.
"That Rook's level is quite high," Koneko muttered.
Issei turned to her, his face scrunched in confusion. "High?" he echoed, tilting his head.
Koneko nodded slightly, her brows furrowing as her focus remained on Xuelan, who stood confidently a few meters away, an amused smile playing on her lips.
"Her combat ability alone might be on par with a Queen," Koneko explained, her tone carrying a hint of concern.
Issei's eyes widened, and a bead of sweat rolled down the side of his face. "Seriously?!" he exclaimed, his voice rising in pitch.
Leo, on the other hand, didn't seem fazed. Instead, a grin stretched across his face, a spark of excitement flashing in his eyes. He rolled his shoulders and took a step forward, popping his knuckles loudly.
"That sounds like fun," Leo said, glancing at Koneko with a mischievous smirk. "May I take her on first?"
Koneko hesitated, her sharp gaze flicking to Leo's eager expression. Reluctantly, she gave a small nod. "Sure. But if she gives you trouble, I'm stepping in," she said firmly, moving to stand beside him.
"Noted." Leo's grin widened as he turned his attention to Xuelan, his hands already balled into fists.
Issei, trying to rally his own courage, summoned his Boosted Gear, the crimson gauntlet materializing on his arm with a flash of light. "Well, it's not like we didn't know we'd be at a disadvantage. We can't back out now!" he declared.
"You take the twins," Koneko instructed, her tone sharp and focused. "I'll handle staff girl."
Without waiting for further confirmation, Leo sprang off the stage, landing heavily on the gym floor. The impact reverberated through the air as he stood opposite Xuelan, who was still wearing that infuriatingly confident smile.
"Bold of you to volunteer," Xuelan teased, her tone playful but laced with a hint of menace. Without giving Leo a chance to respond, she dashed forward, launching into a flurry of rapid kicks.
Her attacks came fast—one striking his chest, another his stomach, and a third glancing off his cheek. Leo absorbed the blows with gritted teeth, his eyes locking onto her movements. In one swift motion, he caught her leg mid-kick, his grip like a steel vice.
"Gotcha," Leo said, smirking as he tightened his hold.
Xuelan's eyes widened as she struggled to free herself, but Leo wasn't about to let go. With a grunt, he lifted her off the ground and spun her around, using her momentum against her. The sound of cracking wood echoed through the gym as he slammed her into the floor with enough force to send splinters flying.
Xuelan winced but recovered quickly, using her free leg to deliver a sharp kick to the side of Leo's knee. The blow forced him down onto one leg, giving her just enough time to roll away and regain her footing. She executed a graceful cartwheel, putting some distance between them before smirking again.
"Damn," Xuelan said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Hot and good at fighting? Talk about a catch…"
Leo chuckled, raising his fists as he assumed a boxer's stance. "You're not so bad yourself. I like a woman who knows how to throw a punch."
Xuelan's confident facade cracked as her face flushed a faint shade of red. She quickly shook off her flustered state and charged again.
The two clashed repeatedly, their movements a blur of punches, kicks, and counters. Xuelan's fluidity was like water, weaving and dodging with a dancer's grace, while Leo's attacks carried the raw power of a wrecking ball.
Xuelan landed a swift roundhouse kick to Leo's jaw, snapping his head to the side. But instead of staggering, he grinned and crouched low, retaliating with a thunderous uppercut. His fist connected with her stomach, driving the air from her lungs and forcing her to spit out a spray of saliva.
Xuelan stumbled back, clutching her midsection as she gasped for air. Despite the pain, a spark of excitement lit her eyes.
"Not bad, hotshot," she said, her voice strained.
"Likewise," Leo replied, cracking his neck as he prepared for another round.
Before they could charge at each other again, a sudden commotion drew everyone's attention.
"AAAAH!"
The piercing scream echoed through the gym, cutting through the tension like a knife. All heads turned toward the source—where Ile and Nel stood, completely naked, their faces a mix of embarrassment and fury.
Leo's eyes shifted slightly to the left, where Issei stood frozen, his face an odd combination of shock, shame, and mortification.
"You pervert!" Ile shouted, pointing an accusatory finger at him.
"You're the worst!" Nel added, her voice trembling with anger.
Leo groaned, dragging a hand down his face. "Dude, what the hell happened?" he called out, his tone exasperated.
Issei waved his arms frantically, his face burning red as he tried to defend himself. "How the hell should I know?! All I did was block their chainsaws with my Sacred Gear! I swear!"
Koneko tilted her head, her tone flat but laced with sarcasm. "Somehow, this feels like your fault."
Xuelan smirked, clearly amused. "I didn't think this fight would turn into a strip show," she quipped, brushing dust from her qipao.
Mira, who had been fending off Koneko moments earlier, sighed and shook her head. "It's a miracle you're still alive, Pawn," she muttered.
Before Leo could comment further, Rias's voice crackled through the transmitter. "Koneko, Issei, Leo. How's the situation?"
Leo watched as Koneko delivered a swift, final blow to Mira, knocking the staff-wielding Pawn unconscious. She turned to him, her expression neutral.
"Uh, good," Leo replied, deciding to leave out the part about the twins'… wardrobe malfunction. "We took care of the three Pawns and a Rook."
"Good work," Rias said. "Akeno is ready to make her move. Proceed with the plan."
As the communication ended, Leo turned to rejoin his teammates, but Xuelan's voice called out behind him.
"Wait!" she said, her tone uncharacteristically bashful. "In the future… could we spar again?"
Leo glanced back at her and smirked. "I'll look forward to it," he said before jogging out of the gym with Issei and Koneko.
They had barely made it a few steps when a massive yellow glyph appeared above the gym's roof. Crackling energy filled the air as a bolt of lightning shot down, obliterating the building in a deafening explosion.
Leo, Issei, and Koneko turned to see Akeno floating gracefully in the air, her Priestess outfit flowing around her as arcs of electricity danced along her fingertips.
"Boom," Akeno said with a giggle, her voice filled with glee.
Grayfia's voice echoed across the battlefield. "Three of Lord Riser's Pawns and one Rook, eliminated."
"Holy shit," Leo muttered, his mouth slightly agape as he stared at the smoldering remains of the gym.
"That was totally wicked!" Issei shouted, his eyes sparkling with amazement.
"Badass is more appropriate," Leo added, chuckling.
Akeno's melodic laugh reached their ears through the transmitter. "Why, thank you," she said sweetly.
"She's known as the Priestess of Thunder," Koneko explained calmly. "Her power is immense."
Leo grinned. "Priestess of Thunder, huh? Remind me never to get on her bad side."
Rias's voice returned, bringing them back to focus. "The real challenge begins now. We're still outnumbered. Akeno will join the battlefield once she's ready to fire again. Until then, proceed to the next phase of the plan."
Leo clapped Issei on the shoulder, his smirk brimming with confidence. "Don't worry about Kiba. He's handling himself just fine. Let's move."
Koneko nodded, already leading the way toward the athletic field when the ground beneath her began to glow.
"Watch out!" Leo shouted, lunging forward to push her aside. But the explosion erupted too quickly, engulfing them in a blinding light.
"OH SHIT, KONEKO!" Issei screamed, his voice raw with panic as his body tumbled across the scorched ground. He tried to stop himself, but the force of the explosion sent him skidding uncontrollably.
"NO!" Leo roared, his heart lurching as he saw Koneko's small frame sent soaring through the air like a ragdoll. Desperation overtook him as he scrambled to his feet, ignoring the burning sensation in his muscles. He bolted toward her, his eyes locked onto her unconscious body.
Issei staggered to his feet, breathing heavily as he chased after Leo, fear twisting in his gut. By the time he reached them, Leo had already caught Koneko midair, cradling her protectively as he absorbed the brunt of the fall.
Leo hit the ground with a grunt, his body sliding a few feet before coming to a halt. His arms tightened around Koneko's limp form as he pulled her close, his worried eyes scanning her small, motionless body. Issei dropped to his knees beside them, his face pale as he took in the extent of her injuries.
Koneko's clothes were shredded, the fabric barely hanging on her soot-covered body. Small burns dotted her porcelain-white skin, and blackened streaks of soot marred her once-flawless complexion.
"Wake up… come on," Leo said, his voice cracking as he gently shook her. His heart pounded wildly, his mind racing with fear. He leaned closer, searching her face for any sign of life.
Issei swallowed hard, dread seeping into his voice. "I-Is she… is she dead?"
"No! She's fine!" Leo snapped, his voice rising with desperation. He shook her a little harder, his trembling hands betraying his growing panic. "Koneko, wake up! Please, wake up!"
For a horrifying moment, nothing happened. Then, a soft groan escaped her lips. Her eyes fluttered open, weak and unfocused, as she gazed up at them.
"I'm… sorry," Koneko whispered, her voice faint and broken. "I wish… I could've been of more help… to the President… and you, Leo."
Leo's lips twitched into a shaky smile, but his eyes glistened with worry. He gently brushed a strand of her white hair from her face. "You did more than enough, Koneko. Thank you. Right now, we're going to get Asia to heal you, and in no time, you'll be ready to kick ass again. I promise."
Before he could lift her, Koneko's body began to glow with an ethereal blue hue. Her small frame trembled in his arms, and a pained scream tore from her lips.
"KONEKO?!" Leo and Issei shouted in unison, panic erupting in their voices.
Blue particles began to swirl around her, her body disintegrating before their eyes. Within seconds, she shattered into glowing fragments, fading into the air like dust carried on the wind. Leo was left clutching at nothing but empty space.
His hands trembled violently as he stared down at them, his breath hitching. The world around him seemed to dim as a long-buried memory clawed its way to the surface. His palms, now stained with crimson in his mind's eye, shook as if weighed down by unseen guilt.
"No… no… no, no, no, no, no…" Leo repeated, his voice growing louder with each word until it turned into a guttural roar.
A surge of raw energy exploded outward from his body, creating a shockwave that sent Issei skidding backward. Issei shielded his face from the fierce winds as he looked on in alarm. "Leo!" he shouted, but his voice was drowned out by the roaring power emanating from his friend.
Leo's aura crackled violently, tendrils of energy spiraling around him like a storm unleashed. His breathing was ragged, his teeth clenched as rage and despair consumed him.
"Leo, it's okay!" Akeno's soothing voice cut through the chaos as she descended gracefully from the sky. She approached cautiously, her calm demeanor unwavering despite the dangerous energy radiating from him.
"Koneko isn't dead," she said gently, her voice like a balm against his turmoil. "She's in a hospital in the Underworld, being treated as we speak. She's safe and watching the rest of the game."
Leo's head snapped toward Akeno, his wild eyes searching hers for the truth. Her serene expression and unwavering gaze seemed to reach him. Slowly, the storm around him began to subside, the energy dispersing into the air like dissipating smoke.
"She's… safe?" Leo murmured, his voice hoarse.
Akeno nodded, a soft smile gracing her lips. "Yes. She's safe. You don't have to worry anymore."
Before Leo could fully process her words, a sultry, husky voice echoed from above.
"Aw, damn. I was aiming for the hot stud."
All eyes turned upward to see Yubelluna, Riser's Queen, floating gracefully in the air. Her amused smile and smug expression made Leo's blood simmer again.
Akeno's violet eyes narrowed dangerously, her calm facade slipping as yellow lightning crackled fiercely around her hands. Her brow twitched at Yubelluna's shameless comment about Leo.
"My, oh my," Akeno said, her tone sugary sweet but laced with menace. She floated upward until she was level with Yubelluna, her smile sharp and predatory.
She glanced down at Leo and Issei, her voice soft but commanding. "Issei, Leo, leave this one to me. Hurry to the next phase of the plan. You need not worry about her."
Yubelluna smirked, crossing her arms confidently. "Are you sure about that?"
Akeno's aura flared, the crackling energy around her growing brighter and more volatile. Her voice dropped, her words seething with determination. "I will avenge Koneko with all my might."
Leo clenched his fists, glancing at Issei before giving Akeno a nod. "You heard her. Let's go."
Issei nodded, though he cast one last glance at Akeno, awe flickering in his eyes. Together, they sprinted off toward the athletic field.
As they ran, a deafening explosion behind them lit up the sky.
The distant booms of explosions reverberated through the air, mingling with the sharp crackle of lightning as Leo and Issei sprinted across the athletic field. Their breaths came in steady rhythm, their adrenaline pumping as they prepared for the next phase.
Rounding a corner near a small equipment shed, they were suddenly yanked inside by a strong hand. Leo instinctively spun, his fist cocked back and ready to strike, his eyes burning with fury.
"Friendly!" Kiba's voice rang out as he raised his hands in mock surrender, a calm smile on his face.
Leo blinked, his tense stance relaxing as he exhaled. A small grin spread across his lips. "Man, you're lucky I didn't deck you."
Issei let out a breath of relief, slumping against the wall. "Holy shit, dude! You nearly scared the life out of me."
Kiba chuckled softly but quickly turned serious. "Sorry about that. I thought you might be one of Riser's people sneaking around. Did you hear about Koneko?"
Leo's jaw tightened, and his expression darkened. "Yeah. She went down trying to protect us."
Kiba frowned, his usual calm demeanor slipping into frustration. "Koneko rarely throws herself into the fray like that. She must've felt something special about today… It's a pity."
Issei, sensing the somber mood, extended his fist toward the two with a determined look. "Let's win this, no matter what! For Koneko!"
Kiba's lips quirked up into a faint smile as he bumped his fist against Issei's. "For Koneko," he agreed.
Leo smirked, his battle-ready demeanor returning as he joined the fist bump. "We're gonna make Riser regret every damn second of this."
Before they could strategize further, the magical transmitters in their ears crackled to life, and Rias's voice cut through the tension.
"Yuuto, Issei, Leo, can you hear me?"
The three shared a look before Leo answered. "Yeah, Rias. Everything okay?"
"There's been a change in the plan," she began, her voice firm but tinged with urgency. "Asia and I will launch a surprise attack on their main base. Your job is to distract as many enemies as possible to buy us time."
Issei's brows furrowed in concern. "A surprise attack? President, are you sure that's safe?"
"I don't have another choice," Rias replied. Her tone was steady but carried the weight of her decision. "Originally, the plan was to wait for Akeno to recover and destroy each building one by one. But now that Riser's Queen is in play, that's no longer viable."
"But President," Kiba cut in, his voice lined with worry, "it's way too dangerous for the King to leave the base. You're the heart of our strategy!"
Leo nodded, his tone firm. "I've got to agree with Kiba. This is a risky move, Rias. Are you sure it's the only option?"
"The enemy likely thinks the same," Rias said confidently, her resolve clear. "That's exactly why it will work. The Phoenix body may be immortal, but the mind is not. If I deliver a blow powerful enough to shake Riser's fighting spirit, we can win this. I'll break him myself."
The three exchanged glances, the gravity of her words sinking in.
Issei's lips curled into a confident smirk. "If that's the plan, then the Occult Research Club's male trio…"
Leo's fists cracked as his battle-hungry grin widened. "...is gonna give them hell."
Kiba's hand rested on the hilt of his sword, his grip tightening as he nodded. "Let's get to work."
The trio stepped out of the shed, their strides confident as they made their way to the center of the athletic field. The night air crackled with tension, the eerie silence broken only by the distant echoes of battle.
Leo stopped and surveyed the area, his eyes scanning the shadows. He smirked, his voice booming across the empty field.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!" he bellowed, his tone dripping with taunting confidence. "We're not hiding. If you've got the guts, show yourselves. Let's see if you're as tough as Riser thinks you are."
A low chuckle echoed from the darkness, sending a chill through the air. A figure stepped forward, her movements graceful and calculated. As she came into the light, she held the scabbard of her sword with a sense of quiet authority.
The woman's piercing green eyes scanned the trio before locking onto Leo. A smirk curled her lips. "I remember you. Your the one who dared interfere in a noble marriage. I've been looking forward to meeting you again."
Leo raised an eyebrow, a playful grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Karlamine."
The woman straightened, unsheathing her sword in one fluid motion, She pointed the tip of her blade at Leo, her tone confident and sharp. "Requesting us to attack you outright makes me question your sanity, but… far be it from me to refuse a challenge."
Her gaze shifted briefly to Kiba, her expression softening with respect. "And you must be Lady Rias's Knight. A pleasure. I was hoping for the chance to cross swords with someone of your caliber."
Kiba stepped forward, a polite smile gracing his lips as he unsheathed his own blade. "Yuuto Kiba, Knight of House Gremory. The pleasure is mine, Karlamine. Let's see which Knight will stand victorious tonight!"
"Well said," Karlamine replied, her smirk widening. Without another word, she lunged forward, her sword cutting through the air like a streak of light.
Kiba dashed forward to meet her, their blades colliding in a shower of sparks. The sharp clang of steel reverberated through the field as they began their deadly dance, each movement precise and calculated.
Leo and Issei stepped back, giving the Knights room to battle. Leo crossed his arms, his grin widening as he watched the sparks fly. "This is gonna be good," he muttered, his excitement palpable.
Issei glanced at Leo, then back at the duel, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple. "Man… she's intense. You think Kiba's got this?"
Leo chuckled, his confidence unwavering. "Kiba's one of the best. Trust me—he'll handle her."
The two continued to watch as Kiba and Karlamine traded blow after blow, their swords clashing with a symphony of skill and power.
The clash of steel on steel reverberated across the athletic field as Kiba and Karlamine's duel continued unabated. Their deadly dance of swordplay was mesmerizing, the sparks from their blades igniting the tension in the air. Suddenly, a sigh of exasperation broke through the sounds of combat, its feminine edge drawing attention.
"All Karlamine thinks about is swords, swords, swords—and more swords," Ravel said, stepping forward into view. Her presence was regal yet exuded a certain weariness. "She even seemed upset about sacrificing some pieces earlier. What an unbelievably unrefined girl. And here I thought I'd finally found a cutie in your team, but, alas, he's just another sword freak. How unfortunate."
Ravel's sharp gaze flicked toward Leo and Issei, her disappointment veiled behind her noble mask.
Leo and Issei turned toward her voice, only to find themselves surrounded by the remaining members of Riser's peerage. They stepped closer, forming a loose circle, their postures tense and battle-ready.
Leo's piercing blue eyes scanned the faces of the women surrounding them. He stopped on Ravel, her poised demeanor faltering under his gaze. "Ravel. It's good to see you're still in one piece. That prick hasn't hurt any of you again, has he?" His voice was calm but edged with restrained anger, his sharp eyes missing nothing.
The other girls shifted uncomfortably, their gazes falling to the ground, their faces darkened by shame or despair. Ravel hesitated, her usual bravado cracking. Her shoulders stiffened as she averted her gaze, and a shadow of sadness crossed her features.
"I…" Her voice broke, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears before she quickly wiped them away, composing herself.
Leo's jaw clenched, his fists curling at his sides. The tension in his muscles grew with each second as realization dawned on him. Their reactions told him everything he needed to know.
"That son of a bitch," Leo growled, his voice trembling with fury. "I'm going to make him pay for this."
Issei's usual carefree demeanor shattered, his face twisting with anger. "That bastard's gonna regret everything he's done to you," he spat, his hands tightening into trembling fists.
Ravel cleared her throat and quickly slipped back into her noble mask, a small, forced smile gracing her lips. "I must say, Rias has excellent taste in boys. Sir Leo, you're certainly an intriguing presence." Her gaze shifted to Issei. "As for you, well… plain as you are, I suppose you're interesting enough."
Issei sighed dramatically, running a hand through his hair. "Man, is my style that bad?" he asked, casting a defeated look at Leo.
Leo smirked and shrugged. "Don't look at me for fashion advice, bro."
"It must be nice," Ravel murmured wistfully, her mask slipping once again as she watched their banter with a pang of longing. "Being able to laugh and be free with friends…" Her voice trailed off, sadness leaking through her otherwise composed tone.
Leo's expression softened with concern, but before he could speak, Isabella stepped forward, cracking her knuckles.
"Enough talk!" Isabella roared, her voice thick with anger. "Prepare yourself, Rook of Rias Gremory!"
Before Issei could react, Leo pushed him aside, stepping in to meet Isabella's charge. Her punch collided with Leo's block, the ground beneath them cracking from the force. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the air.
She spun with the momentum, her leg arcing toward Leo's stomach in a powerful kick. It connected, sending Leo skidding backward. He grunted but planted his feet, his eyes narrowing as Isabella rushed him again.
This time, she unleashed a barrage of punches, her fists a blur. Leo ducked, weaved, and parried as best he could, but several strikes landed—on his chest, his ribs, his face. He staggered slightly, his breath hitching from the onslaught, but he quickly countered.
Ducking low, he drove a powerful uppercut into Isabella's stomach, the force lifting her off her feet. She gasped, saliva spraying from her lips as she fell to her knees, clutching her midsection and struggling to breathe.
Leo stepped back, his breathing steady but his voice soft. "I don't want to hurt you. Please… stand down and resign."
Isabella's hands trembled as she gripped the cracked ground beneath her. A sob escaped her lips, and tears streamed down her soot-covered face. "I-I can't," she cried, her voice breaking. "If we lose, he'll punish us. He'll punish me worse than last time." Her body shuddered as dark memories surfaced, her voice trembling with fear.
Leo knelt in front of her, his gaze soft but filled with rage that simmered beneath the surface. Gently, he cupped her face, tilting her head so her teary eyes met his. His fingers brushed against the white mask that covered half of her face.
"Did he do this to you?" Leo asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Isabella looked away, ashamed, but nodded. A sob escaped her as she broke under the weight of her pain.
Leo's eyes darkened, the brilliant blue swirling like a stormy sea. His voice dropped to a low growl as he pulled her into a firm embrace. "I swear to you," he whispered, his voice trembling with conviction, "I'll free you and the others. That bastard is going to pay for everything he's done."
She sniffled, her voice a soft whisper. "Why would you help me?"
Leo leaned back, meeting her gaze with fierce determination. "Because no one deserves this," he said simply.
He released her and stood, his expression resolute. "I'm going to throw one more punch. Right before it lands… resign."
Isabella nodded hesitantly, a flicker of hope lighting her tear-streaked face.
Leo leapt into the air, his rook-enhanced strength propelling him high above her. With a roar that echoed across the field, he cocked his arm back and brought his fist down with devastating force.
Isabella whispered, "I resign," just as Leo's fist slammed into the ground. The earth shattered beneath the impact, sending debris flying. Smoke and dust obscured everything for several moments.
As the haze cleared, Isabella's form dissolved into glowing blue particles, her presence fading from the battlefield.
Leo rose, his fist still embedded in the ground. "One down… six to go," he muttered to himself.
Ravel's voice broke through the silence. "Hey, pretty boy! You might want to take a look at this."
Leo and Issei followed her gaze to the roof of the new schoolhouse, where Rias stood face-to-face with Riser.
"Damn it," Leo cursed, turning to run toward the building, but his path was blocked by two catlike figures.
"Twins," Kiba muttered, his tone laced with irritation. "Of course, he had reinforcements waiting."
Ravel's voice rose, her noble mask slipping into vulnerability. "We have to win… we just have to. Li, Ni, it's time to show them what real pawns can do."
The twin cat girls moved in unison, their movements graceful and precise. They leapt into the air and split their assault: one targeted Issei, while the other went for Leo.
Ni spun mid-air and aimed a powerful flying kick at Leo, her body twisting like a coiled spring. Leo caught her ankle mid-strike, his grip like a steel vice. Without hesitation, he swung her down, slamming her into the ground with a resounding crash. The force sent cracks splintering through the concrete, and Ni let out a gasp as the wind was knocked out of her lungs.
"Damn it, a little help here, Leo!" Issei shouted, desperation lacing his voice.
Leo turned his head to see Issei getting pummeled. Li was relentless, her fists and feet landing blow after blow on Issei's face, chest, and stomach. His boosted gear glowed faintly, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the onslaught.
"Hold on!" Leo called, making a move to assist.
Before he could take a step, Ni retaliated. She sprang to her feet with surprising speed, spinning into a kick that struck Leo squarely in the face. The impact sent him to the ground, the rough concrete scraping against his skin.
"Stay down," Ni commanded, standing over him with a conflicted expression. Her hands were clenched, but her eyes betrayed hesitation.
Leo rubbed his jaw as he sat up, wincing slightly. "That was a nice kick," he said, a small smile tugging at his lips despite the sting.
Ni blinked, caught off guard by the unexpected compliment. A faint red hue spread across her cheeks, and she looked away, suddenly bashful. "Y-You think so?" she stammered.
Leo chuckled softly, standing up and brushing the dust off his pants. "Of course. You knocked me on my ass, didn't you? That takes skill. Really solid form, by the way."
Ni shifted her weight nervously, her confidence wavering. She fidgeted with her hands and kicked the ground lightly, unable to meet his gaze. "T-That's the first time someone other than my sister has complimented me…" she admitted shyly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Leo opened his mouth to respond, but a shriek pierced the air, cutting him off. Both he and Ni snapped their heads toward the source of the sound.
Across the field, Li was sprawled on the ground, her clothes shredded into tatters around her. She was desperately trying to cover herself, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"It happened again?!" Li cried out in frustration, her voice echoing across the battlefield.
Issei stood a few feet away, his back turned to her with his hands covering his face. His voice was a mix of exasperation and disbelief. "What the hell?! I didn't mean to do that!"
Leo furrowed his brow, glancing between Issei and Li. "How do you keep managing to do that?!"
Issei spun around, his face bright red. "How should I know?!" he exclaimed, waving his arms in frantic denial. "All I did was block her kick! I swear! Has my perversion somehow… transferred to my Sacred Gear?" He glanced suspiciously at the red gauntlet on his arm, his voice dropping to a muttered, self-doubting tone.
Nearby, Kiba and Karlamine paused their duel at the commotion. Karlamine's brows furrowed as she took in the scene, a mix of disbelief and distaste crossing her face.
"Now that's perversion at its full potential," Karlamine remarked dryly. "What an atrocious technique."
Kiba sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I deeply apologize for my comrade's… accidental tendencies," he said, bowing slightly to Karlamine. "He's been working on it."
Issei glared at both of them, his frustration boiling over. "I told you it was an accident, damn it!"
Before anyone could respond, Leo caught movement in his peripheral vision. A flash of blue hair streaked toward Issei, and his instincts kicked in.
"Look out!" Leo shouted, rushing forward.
He reached Issei just in time, shoulder-checking him out of the way as a massive blade cleaved downward, narrowly missing both of them. The oversized sword struck the ground with a deafening crack, slicing cleanly through the concrete as though it were paper.
Leo rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the follow-up swing. The sheer weight of the blade embedded it into the ground, kicking up shards of debris. When the dust settled, a tall woman with long, flowing blue hair stood before them, her weapon gleaming in the light. She smirked, her grip on the sword steady and confident.
"Damn," she said, her voice smooth and low. "You're better than I thought. Not many can dodge that close."
Leo rose to his feet, his muscles coiled like a spring. "What can I say? I've had some amazing teachers," he replied, his voice steady but tinged with challenge.
The woman chuckled, her piercing eyes narrowing as she studied him. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. Name's Siris," she said, resting the massive blade casually on her shoulder. "A knight in Lord Riser's service. And you… you're the famous Leo. Lady Rias is lucky she has you in her life."
Leo smirked, his stance shifting as he prepared for the inevitable clash. "Nice to meet you, Siris."
Her grin widened. "Well, Leo, let's see if you can keep up. I've been itching for a real challenge."
"You might regret saying that," Leo shot back, his voice filled with confidence.
Siris's eyes glinted with excitement. "I hope so," she said, lunging forward with a speed that belied her weapon's size.
On the rooftop, Riser glared down at Leo, his fury boiling over as he watched his servants being eliminated one after another. A commoner—someone beneath his station—was humiliating him. His fists clenched tightly, flames flickering at his fingertips. Across from him, Rias stood poised, her expression calm but her crimson eyes gleaming with triumph.
"You seem upset, Riser," Rias said with a sly smirk. "Why is that? Is it because my Rook is taking out your servants like they're nothing?" Her tone dripped with mockery, each word hitting Riser like a slap to the face.
"DON'T MOCK ME!" Riser bellowed, his voice reverberating across the battlefield. He thrust his hand forward, releasing a medium-sized fireball that roared through the air toward her.
Rias barely flinched. With a wave of her hand, she conjured a protective barrier, the fireball colliding with it in a fiery explosion. Smoke billowed across the rooftop, momentarily obscuring her figure.
"RIAS!" Leo shouted from the athletic field below, his heart pounding as he stared up at the smoke cloud.
A soft shimmer of crimson magic dispelled the haze, revealing Rias hovering above the rooftop. Her clothes were torn in places, and small scrapes adorned her arms, but her stance was as confident as ever. She glanced down at Leo, her voice carrying across the distance.
"I'm fine, Leo. Don't worry about me," she called out firmly. Her expression softened for a moment, a flicker of pride in her eyes. "Just focus on the battle at hand. Don't doubt yourself—I believe in you. Fight! Show them the strength you truly possess. You are a servant of Rias Gremory!"
The fiery determination in her voice reignited something deep within Leo. His jaw tightened as he nodded, his focus sharpening. Above, Rias turned back to Riser, firing a burst of crimson energy toward him, the explosion illuminating the rooftop like a violent sunset.
Back on the field, a sudden burst of green energy erupted around Issei, his Boosted Gear glowing brightly with pulsating waves of light.
"Badass!" Issei shouted, the newfound power surging through his veins. He turned toward Kiba, a wild grin spreading across his face. "Kiba! Use your Sacred Gear!"
Kiba blinked, caught off guard. "Say what?"
"Just trust me! Do it!" Issei urged.
After a brief pause, Kiba smirked, always ready to rise to a challenge. "Fine. SWORD BIRTH!"
Kiba leapt into the air, his sword gleaming as he drove its tip into the ground. Cracks spiderwebbed outwards as a sea of swords erupted from the earth, their metallic edges shimmering menacingly. The deadly wave surged toward Issei, but instead of dodging, he planted his feet and thrust his gauntlet forward.
"BOOST!"
A deep, resonant hum filled the air as the Boosted Gear absorbed the attack, green energy swirling around Issei's body. He clenched his fist, his muscles bulging with newfound strength.
"TRANSFER!"
A flash of green light exploded outward as the energy was unleashed, creating a storm of swords that blanketed the athletic field. The blades shot in every direction, their sheer number overwhelming Riser's remaining servants. Leo and Kiba darted out of the way, narrowly avoiding the onslaught.
The effect on Riser's peerage was devastating. Many of the servants were slashed, while others were skewered by the relentless barrage. Cries of pain filled the air as several blue lights shimmered, signaling their resignations.
"I-I don't understand…" Karlamine whispered, dropping to one knee as blood trickled from a cut on her arm. Her sword slipped from her trembling hand. "How… how could we lose?" Her voice was filled with disbelief and despair. With a heavy sigh, she bowed her head. A moment later, her body dissolved into blue particles, resigning from the fight.
As the dust settled, the field was eerily quiet. All that remained were Kiba, Issei, Leo, and Ravel, who stood frozen in place, her face a mixture of shock and sadness.
Issei looked down at his glowing gauntlet, his expression a mix of amazement and pride. He flexed his hand, the power coursing through him like an electric current.
"That was so badass, bro," Leo said with a grin, clapping Issei on the back.
Issei beamed, his confidence surging. "Yeah, it was, wasn't it?"
But their celebration was short-lived. A sudden explosion shattered the moment, the shockwave sending debris flying. All eyes turned toward the sky as Akeno plummeted, her priestess outfit in tatters. Burns and scorch marks marred her body as she began to glow faintly blue.
"Akeno?!" Leo shouted in disbelief as she disappeared in a flash of light.
Issei's eyes widened in shock. "No… not Akeno…"
Before they could process the loss, another explosion rocked the field. Kiba let out a pained cry as he was hurled backward, his body crashing into the ground before he, too, vanished in a burst of blue light.
"KIBA!" Leo roared, his voice filled with desperation.
Floating above them, Yubelluna descended slowly, her expression conflicted. Her usual stoic demeanor faltered as a single tear slid down her cheek. "Forgive me," she said quietly, her voice trembling. "I have no choice. If I don't fight with everything I have… he'll punish us all."
Ravel stepped forward, her noble mask slipping as she offered Yubelluna a small, reassuring smile. "It took you long enough," she said softly, her voice tinged with relief.
Yubelluna bowed her head toward Ravel, then straightened, regaining her composure. "That queen was as strong as the rumors said. I had no choice but to use this." She held up a small vial filled with a shimmering golden liquid.
Issei's eyes narrowed. "What is that?" he demanded, his voice tight with anger.
Ravel's wings of fire unfurled behind her, their glow casting a fiery light over the battlefield. "Phoenix Tears," she explained smugly. "A treasure of my family. It can heal any wound completely, no matter how grave."
"That's such BS!" Issei shouted, his frustration boiling over.
Leo gritted his teeth, his knuckles cracking as his fists clenched tightly. "Cheating bastards…" he muttered under his breath.
Another explosion rocked the air, drawing their attention to the rooftop of the new schoolhouse. Rias and Riser were locked in a fierce magical battle, their attacks lighting up the night sky.
"Enough of this," Leo growled, his voice low and dangerous. Without waiting for a response, he took off toward the schoolhouse.
"Leo, wait!" Issei called after him, but it was no use.
Leo charged through the gym's shattered doors, his powerful frame barreling through the rubble with ease. Issei hesitated briefly before following, his gauntlet glowing once again. As he crossed the threshold, he clenched his fist and shouted, "PROMOTION: QUEEN!"
The two of them disappeared into the building, their determination blazing as they prepared to face Riser head-on.
Leo and Issei sprinted up the stairs, their breaths heavy but their resolve unshaken. The sound of their boots pounding against the steps echoed through the narrow stairwell. Leo was several flights ahead, his legs burning with each leap forward, but his mind was solely focused on one thing—reaching Rias.
"Leo, slow down, damn it!" Issei called out between ragged breaths, struggling to keep up with the pace. But Leo didn't slow down. He pushed harder, his muscles screaming for relief, his heart thundering in his chest.
Reaching the top floor, Leo kicked a window open with a deafening crack and pulled himself through, the cold air of the rooftop rushing over his sweat-soaked body. His sharp blue eyes locked onto Rias immediately, kneeling beside Asia as the bishop worked diligently to heal her wounds.
Rias glanced up at the sound of his arrival, and her lips curled into a small, relieved smile. "Leo… thank goodness."
"Lady Rias, Issei Hyoudou and Leo Young reporting for butt-kicking duty!" Issei's voice echoed behind him as he clambered through the same window, his face flushed from exhaustion but his grin filled with determination.
"You guys are okay…" Asia whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. She wiped away a small tear, a grateful smile spreading across her face as she saw the two standing tall and ready to fight.
A deep, mocking laugh drew their attention across the rooftop. Riser stood there, his fiery wings flaring behind him as his eyes gleamed with disdain.
"Color me impressed," Riser said with a slow, deliberate clap. "You actually survived my servants. But no matter. Riser shall turn you both to ash!" With a flick of his wrist, a large fireball roared to life and hurtled toward them.
Rias raised her hand swiftly, conjuring a shield of magic that deflected the attack with a resounding boom. The force of the blast sent small sparks scattering across the rooftop, but Rias didn't flinch.
"You will not lay a hand on them!" she growled, her crimson eyes blazing with fury.
Riser smirked, his confidence unshaken, as Yubelluna descended beside him gracefully. Her violet hair glinted in the dim light, her gaze calm but calculating.
"Shall I take care of the pawn boy and the bishop?" Yubelluna asked, her voice as smooth as silk. She held her staff tightly, her violet eyes gleaming with readiness.
Riser waved her off with a flick of his hand. "Do not. Riser prefers to handle all of them together." He chuckled, his fiery aura intensifying. "Riser enjoys being… persuasive."
"Don't be ridiculous!" Rias snapped, firing two quick bursts of magic at him. The attacks struck true, hitting Riser's shoulder and left arm. His arm disintegrated into flames, completely obliterated by the impact.
But before anyone could react, the flames reformed, and his arm regenerated as though nothing had happened.
"Resign already, Rias!" Riser roared, his voice echoing across the battlefield. "It's over now. I've read through all your moves. Checkmate." His smirk widened as he stepped closer, his tone dripping with arrogance.
Rias rose to her feet, her stance firm as she stared him down. Her hair fluttered in the wind, her defiance unyielding. "Shut up, Riser! Checkmate? Read my moves? Don't make me laugh." Her voice carried the weight of her pride and determination. "I, the king, am still standing!"
Leo stepped forward, his fists clenched tightly at his sides. "She's still standing because you've never fought someone with her kind of strength—inner strength." His voice was sharp, like a blade cutting through the tension in the air. "Unlike you, who hides behind your so-called 'immortality,' she actually has something worth fighting for."
Riser's smirk faltered, his golden eyes narrowing dangerously. "Watch your tongue, boy."
Leo took another step forward, his gaze locked onto Riser's. "Or what? You'll throw another tantrum? Go ahead. I'll break every damn feather off those flaming wings of yours."
Riser's hands ignited, flames licking at his fingers as his aura flared violently. "You insolent little wretch… You think breaking up my marriage was enough? No, no. For that insult and for daring to stand in my way, Riser will kill you."
Leo's lips curled into a smirk, his eyes blazing with unrelenting confidence. "You're welcome to try, Phoenix boy. But you'll find out real fast that immortality doesn't mean shit when you're facing me."
The tension between the two men crackled like a live wire, the heat of Riser's flames battling the icy determination in Leo's glare. They stood in a silent standoff, the battlefield around them frozen as the air thickened with the promise of an imminent clash.
-XXX-
The tension on the rooftop was palpable, a heavy, almost suffocating weight that seemed to press down on everyone. Riser's golden eyes burned with fury as he glared at Leo, his fiery wings flaring like a raging inferno. Across from him, Leo stood his ground, his jaw clenched, matching Riser's intensity with an unwavering gaze. It was clear—both men wanted nothing more than to destroy the other.
Riser didn't look away from Leo as he barked his command. "Do it."
Yubelluna hesitated for a split second, her expression faltering into one of quiet sorrow. Then, with a solemn nod, she floated higher into the air, disappearing from view.
Inside Leo's mind, the Berserker was a tempest of fury, thrashing about like a caged beast. His voice boomed in Leo's head, each word dripping with raw anger.
"THIS PHOENIX BASTARD HAS DISRESPECTED YOU AND OUR PEOPLE FOR THE LAST TIME!" The Berserker's voice rumbled like thunder, echoing through Leo's soul. "AND TOUCHING THE GIRL IN THE CLUBROOM?! I SHOULD'VE RIPPED HIS HEAD OFF THEN AND THERE!"
Leo's temples throbbed painfully as he felt the Berserker's rage surge through him like a wildfire. He forced himself to stay grounded, keeping his glare locked on Riser. Asia took the opportunity to rush to Leo's side, her hands glowing with the soft green light of her Twilight Healing as she reached up to touch his shoulder.
The soothing warmth washed over Leo, easing his fatigue and numbing the pain of his injuries. His breathing steadied, and he shot Asia a small, grateful smile.
"Thanks, Asia. I'm feeling better."
Asia's green eyes glimmered with admiration as she looked up at him. "I can't believe you're still standing after everything they've done. You're so brave. You never give up, do you?"
Leo's smile faltered slightly, his gaze hardening as he looked at Riser. "Call it one of my bad qualities, but when someone I care about is in need… I'll do my darndest to help them, even if it kills me."
Issei, standing just behind them, chuckled and nodded in agreement. "I'm with you there. We can't let this dickbag win."
Leo smirked at Issei's comment, but the moment was short-lived. A sharp, high-pitched noise pierced the air. Leo's eyes darted to the source, and his heart dropped as a glowing purple glyph appeared beneath Issei and Asia.
"No!" Leo shouted, his body already moving, but before he could reach them, Riser appeared in front of him in a flash of flames.
"Watch, boy," Riser sneered, his hand shooting out to grab Leo's face. "Watch what happens when you cross me."
Leo struggled, roaring in frustration as Riser forced him to look. The glyph beneath Issei and Asia erupted in a violent explosion, flames and debris shooting skyward.
Inside his mind, the Berserker howled, his rage exploding like a storm. "BASTARD! YOU COWARDLY PIECE OF SHIT! I'LL TEAR YOU APART LIMB BY LIMB!"
Leo threw an elbow at Riser, trying to break free, but the Phoenix's grip was ironclad. With a smug grin, Riser shot into the air, dragging Leo with him. "You're nothing but a thorn in my side!" Riser snarled before slamming Leo downward with all his might.
The impact was catastrophic. Leo's body crashed through the roof, tearing through floor after floor of the school. Each collision sent shockwaves rippling through the building. Railings bent, walls crumbled, and debris scattered in every direction. His face slammed into a metal railing, splitting his lip and brow wide open, blood pouring down his face. Another impact drove into his ribs, a sharp crack signaling a fracture. Finally, with a deafening crash, Leo slammed into the first floor, the ground shattering beneath him in a web of jagged cracks.
The school windows exploded outward from the force, a plume of dust and debris billowing out of the destroyed building.
Inside Leo's Mind
The swirling void of Leo's soul was alive with chaos. The Berserker raged, his massive figure thrashing about like a storm given form. His glowing, electric blue eyes burned with unrelenting fury, each step shaking the ground beneath them. Ragnar stood nearby, his jaw clenched, his broad shoulders tense, his normally calm demeanor fractured by his own quiet storm of rage.
"HOW LONG WILL YOU LET THIS CONTINUE, BOY?!" the Berserker roared, his voice a crack of thunder. "THIS PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A MAN IS HUMILIATING YOU, US—AND YOU HAVEN'T DONE A DAMN THING TO STOP HIM!"
Leo, still sprawled on the ground of this internal battlefield, gritted his teeth. His hands shook as he pressed them into the dirt, his breath coming in short, ragged bursts.
"SHUT UP!" he yelled, his voice raw and cracking. "I KNOW HE'S HUMILIATING ME! YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT?!"
Ragnar's deep voice cut through the tension, cold and sharp as steel. "Then get up. Prove him wrong. You have the strength—use it."
Leo turned his head toward Ragnar, his eyes blazing with frustration. "I'm trying! I'm giving it everything I've got, I have been since the start!"
Ragnar stepped closer, towering over Leo as he gazed down at him. "You're letting your emotions blind you, boy. Rage without direction is useless. You must focus it. Control it. Use it like a blade."
The Berserker growled, his fists clenching as his aura of crackling energy flared around him. "FOCUS IT? USE IT LIKE A BLADE? NO, WE DON'T NEED FOCUS! THIS ISN'T A TIME FOR RESTRAINT, RAGNAR!" The Berserker's voice boomed with righteous fury, his massive form looming closer to Leo. "RISER IS A POWERFUL MAN, BUT HE'S USING THAT POWER TO ABUSE THE WEAK! TO HURT THOSE WHO TRUST HIM! THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOR—THAT KIND OF COWARDICE—IS UNFORGIVABLE!"
Ragnar's fists tightened at the Berserker's words, his calm exterior cracking. "You think I don't feel the same?" he growled, his deep voice vibrating with restrained rage. "I've seen this before. I've lived it. Men like Riser, who abuse their power to crush others, deserve to fall. And they will fall." His piercing gaze bore into Leo. "But only if you stand up, Leo. If you act."
Leo's body trembled as he pushed himself to his knees, his nails digging into his palms so hard they drew blood. "I want to act. I want to stop him, but every time I try—it's like I'm fighting a wall that won't break!" He slammed his fists into the ground, his voice breaking. "I'm tired of this! I'm sick of being too weak to protect anyone!"
The Berserker crouched down, his massive hand gripping Leo's shoulder with surprising gentleness for such an imposing figure. "THEN STOP HOLDING BACK. STOP DOUBTING YOURSELF. LET ME HELP YOU." His voice softened, though it still carried a growling undertone. "YOU HAVE THE POWER TO DESTROY HIM—TO END THIS. YOU JUST NEED TO LET GO."
Ragnar crouched beside Leo as well, his hand resting on Leo's other shoulder. His voice was calm but laced with a deep, smoldering anger. "He's right. Riser has gone too far, and it's time someone reminded him what true strength looks like. But don't let rage control you. Channel it. Own it. Make it yours."
Leo looked up at the two towering figures, the twin pillars of his soul—the unrestrained fury of the Berserker and the tempered strength of Ragnar. His teeth clenched, his breath coming out in sharp, uneven bursts.
"I'm tired…" he whispered, his voice trembling. "Tired of watching people I care about get hurt. Tired of people like him thinking they can do whatever they want without consequences."
His trembling stopped, his fists tightening as a surge of energy began to course through him. "I'm done holding back," Leo said, his voice gaining strength. He stood, his knees no longer shaking. His eyes burned with a fire that hadn't been there before as he turned to face the Berserker.
"I WANT TO DESTROY HIM!" Leo roared, his voice echoing through the void.
The Berserker grinned, his teeth bared in a savage expression of approval. "THAT'S THE SPIRIT! LET'S SHOW HIM WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MESS WITH US!"
Ragnar nodded, his lips curling into a faint, satisfied smile. "Good. Now go. Remind Riser that power isn't a right—it's a responsibility. And if he can't handle it, then take it from him."
The energy around Leo erupted, a swirling mix of blue and green that crackled with electricity. His soul burned with newfound determination as he turned and surged back into reality.
Reality
Back on the rooftop, Rias screamed at Riser, her voice trembling with rage and desperation. "You're a monster! How could you do that?!"
Riser laughed, his fiery wings flaring as he turned to face her. "Monster? Riser is simply ensuring his victory. Soon, you will be mine, and that pest you call a rook will rot in the Colosseum."
Before he could say more, the air around the battlefield shifted. A suffocating pressure settled over them, thick and electric. Riser's smirk faded as he turned toward the hole in the roof, confusion flickering across his face.
Suddenly, a massive fist shot out of the hole, slamming into Riser's jaw with bone-crushing force. The impact sent him hurtling into the sky, spinning wildly as flames sputtered from his body.
Everyone froze as a figure emerged from the rubble, his towering frame illuminated by a crackling blue and green aura. His long hair flowed wildly around him, his muscular form radiating unbridled power. His glowing blue eyes sparked with electricity, his expression twisted into a feral grin.
Rias's breath hitched as she stared at the figure. "Leo…?" she whispered, barely audible.
The man turned to her, his smirk widening. "Don't worry, Rias. I'm just getting started."
From above, Riser roared in fury, his wings igniting once more. "How dare you! I AM A NOBLEMAN OF THE PHOENIX CLAN! YOU ARE NOTHING BUT AN ANT COMPARED TO RISER!"
With a burst of flames, Riser dove toward the rooftop, his fists ablaze. But Leo launched himself into the sky to meet him, their fists colliding in a thunderous shockwave that rocked the battlefield below.
The two combatants soared higher into the sky, the wind howling around them like the prelude to a storm. Riser's fist erupted into flames, the intense heat distorting the air around it as he drove it into Leo's face. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the air, but Leo barely flinched. A guttural growl escaped him, his body thrumming with rage as his forehead slammed into Riser's face with the force of a battering ram.
A sickening crunch echoed through the sky as Riser's nose shattered, blood spurting out before it was instantly burned away by the heat of his own aura. The Phoenix noble snarled, his face contorted in pain as his magic worked to snap his nose back into place with an audible pop.
"You wretched mongrel!" Riser spat, his voice trembling with fury. His flames roared to life once more as he pressed his blazing palm against Leo's back. The searing heat scorched through the fabric of Leo's shirt, his skin blistering and bubbling as the acrid smell of burnt flesh filled the air.
Leo grunted, his jaw clenched tightly against the pain. But pain was nothing new to him—it was fuel. With a feral roar, he grabbed Riser by the shoulders, his fingers digging into the noble's skin with crushing force.
"You talk too much!" Leo growled before slamming his head into Riser's once more, and then again, and again. Each strike sent shockwaves through the air, and with every blow, Riser's flames faltered, his concentration shattered under the unrelenting assault.
Finally, the Phoenix noble twisted in midair, breaking free from Leo's grip. "I SHALL BURN YOU TO DEATH!" Riser roared, his voice echoing like thunder as he flipped their positions and delivered a fiery kick to Leo's chest.
Leo rocketed toward the ground like a comet, the sheer force of the impact shaking the entire battlefield. He crashed through the roof of the school, shattering beams and sending debris flying in every direction as he plunged all the way down to the destroyed first floor. His momentum carried him even deeper, slamming through the ground below and into the earth itself.
Dust and rubble filled the air, shrouding the scene in a thick, suffocating haze. Blood dripped down Leo's battered face, pooling around him as he lay among the ruins. A low, guttural growl emanated from the rubble as he began to stir, his rage and fury refusing to let him stay down.
Above, Riser floated back down to the rooftop, a triumphant smirk plastered across his face. "Hmph. That's what happens when a mongrel dares to challenge the Phoenix!" he boasted, his voice dripping with arrogance.
On the rooftop, Rias clenched her fists, tears streaming down her cheeks as she glared at Riser with pure hatred. "Damn you..." she choked out, her voice trembling with anger and heartbreak.
Riser laughed, throwing his arms out dramatically. "He was no match for Riser! It's no use, my love. No matter what you throw at me, I will always come out on top. This is your destiny, Rias—to kneel before me, the superior devil, as my bride!"
But before he could gloat further, the ground beneath them began to tremble.
The vibrations grew stronger, shaking the entire school as tiles cracked and fell from the roof. Issei lost his balance, landing hard on his backside next to the unconscious Asia, while Yubelluna glanced around in alarm. Her heart pounded in her chest as she felt the overwhelming surge of power rising from below.
"What... what is this?!" she whispered, fear evident in her voice.
Riser frowned, his confidence wavering for the first time as he looked toward the source of the tremors. Suddenly, a massive hand shot up through the rooftop, wrapping around his face with bone-crushing force.
"What—?!" Riser's muffled cry was cut short as Leo emerged in the blink of an eye, his form wreathed in a violent storm of blue and green energy. His muscles bulged with power, his eyes crackling with electricity as they burned with unrelenting rage.
With a deafening roar, Leo drove Riser downward, slamming him through the roof and into the first floor. The walls crumbled and collapsed as Leo dragged Riser's face across the shattered remains of the school, carving a path of destruction. Finally, with a savage yell, Leo hurled Riser through the front entrance, sending him crashing into a massive tree.
Splinters of bark exploded into the air as Riser collided with the tree, the force of the impact uprooting it from the ground. He tumbled awkwardly, skidding to a stop in the dirt as he gasped for breath, his body trembling from the onslaught.
Before Riser could regain his footing, Leo stepped forward, his entire body radiating raw power. His chest heaved as he let out a guttural roar, the sound echoing like a war cry. His aura exploded outward, a brilliant pillar of blue and green energy shooting into the sky. The sheer force of it sent debris flying in every direction, uprooting nearby trees and shaking the ground.
Riser staggered to his feet, his flames reigniting as he prepared another attack. He hurled a massive fireball toward Leo, the blazing orb crackling with destructive energy.
But Leo didn't flinch. With a single powerful kick, he shattered the fireball, the flames dissipating harmlessly around him.
Riser's confident smirk faltered as a bead of sweat dripped down his brow. For the first time, he felt a pang of fear creeping into his chest. But he refused to let it show.
"You're a fool to challenge a noble of the Phoenix clan!" Riser sneered, his voice tinged with desperation. "Humans, reincarnated devils—you're nothing compared to us! We're purebloods, the rightful rulers of everything beneath us! And when I'm done with you, I'll make sure humans suffer for their insolence!"
Leo's eyes narrowed, his aura flaring even brighter. "You're a disgrace to power," he growled, his voice low and menacing. "You talk about superiority, but all I see is a coward hiding behind his bloodline. Let me show you what real strength looks like."
In an instant, Leo launched himself forward, his knee drove into Riser's stomach with crushing force, eliciting a guttural gasp from the Phoenix noble. Blood splattered from his lips, but before he could recover, Leo's hands clamped down on his shoulders like iron shackles.
The first headbutt struck like a thunderclap, splitting open Riser's already damaged nose. The second shattered what little remained of his composure, blood gushing from his mouth as a garbled cry escaped him. Blow after brutal blow, Leo's forehead smashed into Riser's face, each impact growing fiercer as the enraged young man refused to stop.
"Get up, Phoenix!" Leo roared, his voice a tempest of fury. "Is this all you've got?!"
Riser's vision blurred, the world spinning as pain overwhelmed him. But through sheer will and desperation, he summoned the last reserves of his strength, channeling flames into his fist. With a feral growl, he slammed his fiery punch into Leo's chest, the force of the attack sending the berserk young man hurtling backward like a cannonball.
Leo's body crashed through the treetops, splintering branches and uprooting smaller trees in his path. His back collided with a massive trunk, the impact shaking the forest as leaves rained down around him.
Taking the brief respite, Riser staggered to his feet, his body trembling as he reached into his jacket. From within, he pulled a small, ornate vial filled with a glowing golden liquid.
"Phoenix Tears," he muttered with a wicked grin, popping the cap and pouring the liquid over himself. His wounds closed instantly, his disfigured face restoring itself in a flash as though the carnage had never occurred. "Ah, that's much better."
A low, menacing growl echoed through the woods, the sound primal and feral. Riser turned sharply toward the darkness, his flames casting flickering shadows across the trees. From the inky void, a pair of piercing, dark blue eyes stared back at him, glowing with raw fury.
Riser chuckled, his cockiness returning as he spread his arms wide. "Come then, mongrel. Let's end this pathetic farce. Show me what little strength you have left." He motioned with his hands, taunting Leo as his grin widened.
The guttural roar that answered was deafening, shaking the very ground beneath them. In an instant, Leo shot out of the forest like a bolt of lightning, his speed leaving behind a trail of uprooted dirt and shattered trees. Riser braced himself, his smirk unwavering as Leo cocked his arm back, his fist glowing with unrelenting power.
At the last second, Riser sidestepped the attack, spinning on his heel and slamming his foot into Leo's stomach. The blow sent the young man flying once more, his body ricocheting off the school roof with a thunderous crash.
Tiles shattered and scattered as Leo skidded across the roof, the impact exposing the wooden beams beneath. His body finally came to a stop near the edge, steam rising from the burns across his chest.
Riser hovered above him, his wings of fire spreading majestically as he conjured twin fireballs in his hands. With a flick of his wrists, he hurled them toward Leo, the blazing orbs screaming through the air.
The fireballs struck Leo's chest in unison, the force of the explosion engulfing him in flames. The acrid smell of burnt flesh filled the air as the young man staggered, the pain evident in his trembling form.
Leo growled low in his throat, his muscles twitching as he forced himself to rise. The edges of his vision blurred, his body screaming in protest with every movement.
Riser descended to the roof with slow, deliberate steps, his laughter cutting through the smoke like a knife. "You just don't know when to quit, do you?" he sneered, the flames around him flickering dangerously.
Without hesitation, he closed the distance and began to unleash a relentless barrage of punches and kicks. Each blow struck with brutal precision, sending shockwaves through Leo's battered body.
Rias clenched her fists, her heart breaking as she watched the man she loved endure such punishment. Tears streamed down her face as she cried out, "Stop it! Stop hurting him!"
Riser only laughed, his voice dripping with cruelty. "This is what happens to those who defy the Phoenix!" he declared, his words sharp and venomous.
Issei, still unable to stand, slammed his fist against the ground in frustration. "Damn it!" he growled, his voice trembling with helplessness. "Leo… come on… get up!"
Leo's body collapsed to the ground, his chest heaving as he struggled to draw breath. Riser loomed over him, his expression one of twisted satisfaction as he straddled the young man's chest.
"This is where it ends," Riser hissed, his fist glowing with fire as he raised it high. "You're nothing, Leo! Nothing but a dog biting at the heels of its master!"
And with that, Riser's fists rained down, each punch a fiery hammer that cracked against Leo's bloodied face. Rias screamed his name, her voice filled with anguish as the relentless assault continued.
Riser's flaming fists rained down on Leo, each strike adding to the blood and burns already covering his broken body. With a final punch, Leo's Berserker form dissipated, leaving his battered, mortal body exposed. Riser's laughter echoed across the rooftop as he rose to his feet, grabbing Leo by the throat and hoisting him into the air like a trophy.
"This... this is the man you love, Rias?!" Riser growled, turning his fiery gaze to the distraught crimson-haired heiress. His fingers tightened around Leo's neck, cutting off his air supply. "This pathetic whelp!? THIS is the 'savior' of your house?!"
"Stop it!" Rias screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her heart felt like it was being torn apart as she watched Leo dangle helplessly in Riser's grasp. "Please, Riser, stop hurting him!"
Issei gritted his teeth, the rage within him boiling over as he forced himself to his knees. His body trembled with the effort, his legs barely able to hold him up. His usual brown eyes flickered with an unnatural green light as his sacred gear stirred in response to his fury.
Above them, Ravel floated onto the rooftop, her expression a mixture of curiosity and unease. Her wings of fire flickered weakly as she landed, only to freeze in horror at the scene before her.
"B-Brother, what are you doing?" Ravel stammered, her voice shaking. She couldn't look away from Leo's mangled body, the blood dripping from his wounds staining the ground below.
Riser turned to her with a triumphant smirk, lifting Leo higher as if to showcase his victory. "Ah, Ravel! You're just in time to witness Riser's greatness. This is what happens when you defy me. This is the fate of anyone foolish enough to stand against the Phoenix!"
Leo gurgled, his body twitching as he weakly raised a hand to Riser's wrist, trying to pry himself free. His strength was all but gone, yet the defiance in his eyes hadn't faded.
"Oh? Still alive, are we?" Riser said mockingly, his smirk widening. "Good. I was just starting to enjoy myself."
Summoning the last reserves of his will, Leo spat a mouthful of blood into Riser's face. The crimson streak splattered across the Phoenix noble's perfect features, silencing him for a brief moment.
"Is that... all you've got?" Leo rasped, his lips curling into a bloody smirk.
Rias gasped, her tears falling faster as she clasped her hands over her mouth. "Leo..." she whispered, her voice cracking.
Issei's fists clenched tightly, his nails digging into his palms as his sacred gear glowed brighter. "Damn it..." he growled under his breath.
Above them, Yubelluna's wings faltered as she hovered uncertainly. Her lips trembled, her heart torn by the scene unfolding below her. She knew what was coming, and yet she couldn't bring herself to intervene. Riser's cruelty weighed heavily on her conscience, but fear kept her rooted in place.
Ravel's hands clenched tightly against her chest, her empathetic gaze locked on Leo. She'd seen her brother's wrath before, but something about this felt even crueler. Her heart ached for the man before her, his strength and defiance shining even in the face of her brother's merciless assault.
Riser tilted his head, wiping the blood from his face with a slow, deliberate motion. "Oh, I see," he said, his voice low and cold. "You want to die on your feet, don't you?"
With a growl, Riser slammed his fist into Leo's stomach, flames igniting on impact. Leo's body jerked violently as he coughed up more blood, his head lolling forward.
"Enough of this," Riser sneered, his flames intensifying around his free hand. "It's time to send this rook to hell."
"NO!" Rias screamed, her voice raw with panic. "Please, Riser, don't do this! I'll do anything, just let him go!"
Leo's eyes fluttered open, his vision blurred, but his smirk never wavered. "You're... pathetic," he muttered weakly, his voice dripping with defiance.
Riser's expression twisted with fury. "You dare mock me?!" he roared, his flaming fist drawing back.
As the blow came hurtling toward Leo's chest, time seemed to slow. The world blurred around him, and all Leo could hear was his own heartbeat. But just before Riser's fist could connect, something blocked its path.
A sickening crunch echoed through the air as Riser's flaming hand pierced through flesh. Leo's eyes widened in horror as he saw Issei standing in front of him, Riser's arm buried in his chest. Blood dripped from the wound, staining the ground beneath them.
"Issei!" Rias screamed, her voice filled with anguish.
Riser's laughter echoed across the rooftop as he grabbed Issei by the hair, lifting his head to look into his pained eyes. "This... this is perfect!" Riser declared, his tone triumphant. "Not only did Riser kill this pathetic human, but he's also the wielder of a sacred gear! Riser's name will be remembered forever!"
Leo's chest heaved as he stared at his best friend, his mind racing with disbelief. "Issei..." he murmured, his voice shaking.
Issei grimaced, his face pale from blood loss, but he managed a weak smile. "It's okay, bro..." he said, his voice barely audible. "I've got your back... always."
Riser scoffed, pulling his arm free and letting Issei collapse to the ground. Blood poured from the gaping wound in his chest, pooling around him as his legs buckled.
Rias fell to her knees, her hands shaking as tears streamed down her face. "Issei..." she whispered, her voice breaking. "No... please, no..."
Leo caught Issei as he fell, cradling him in his arms. "You idiot... why?" Leo choked out, his voice thick with emotion.
Inside his mind, Ragnar and the Berserker roared in unison, their voices filled with rage and sorrow.
"Riser's head will roll for this!" the Berserker bellowed, his fury uncontainable. "We will burn him to the ground!"
"Leo, focus!" Ragnar urged, his voice trembling with barely contained anger. "This isn't over. This bastard cannot win. For Issei... for Rias... for all of us, you must end this!"
Leo's tears mingled with the blood on his face as he gritted his teeth, his body trembling with emotion. "Issei..." he whispered again, his voice cracking. "I won't let this be in vain. I promise you... I'll make him pay."
Ravel covered her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks as she watched the scene unfold. Even Yubelluna, so accustomed to following orders, couldn't hide the pain in her eyes.
The air grew heavier as a storm of emotion and power swirled around Leo. His grief, his anger, his pain—all of it surged within him like a raging inferno.
Leo's hands trembled as he cradled Issei's broken body in his lap. The blood pooling beneath them soaked through his pants, its warmth fading far too quickly. Issei's breaths were shallow and uneven, but the ever-present smile on his face didn't waver, even in his final moments.
"Hey… Leo…" Issei rasped, his voice barely audible. He tried to laugh, but it came out as a strained cough, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "Don't… make that face… man. You look like someone just… kicked your dog…"
"Shut up," Leo growled, his voice cracking. Tears streamed down his soot- and blood-stained face as he shook his head in disbelief. "Don't say stupid shit like that! You're gonna be fine! Asia will heal you, and we'll laugh about this later! You hear me?!"
Issei's lips curled into a faint smirk, his eyes struggling to stay open. "Y-Yeah… Sure. We'll… laugh about it… You, me… and Rias… Maybe… Ann too…"
"Don't you dare say 'maybe,'" Leo snapped, gripping Issei's shoulder tightly as if that alone could keep him tethered to life. "We're not done yet, you hear me? You're gonna be there… at the finish line… just like always."
Issei's blood-stained smile softened as his hand weakly reached up, brushing against Leo's forehead. "Leo… you're gonna… finish this for us. For her… For them… Do me a favor…?"
Leo nodded, tears streaking down his cheeks. "Anything, man. Just name it."
"Don't forget… to protect her… and kick his flaming ass." Issei's voice faded as he chuckled softly. His finger poked Leo's forehead, and a sudden surge of energy flowed into him. The red gauntlet of Boosted Gear materialized over Leo's arm, glowing faintly before dimming.
Issei's hand fell limp, his head tilting slightly to the side as his smile remained frozen in place.
"Issei?" Leo's voice wavered as he shook him gently. "Come on, man… Stop messing around! Wake up!"
There was no response.
In Leo's Mind
The chaotic, laughter-filled moments Leo and Issei had shared flashed through Leo's mind like fragments of a dream.
The time they tried to out-eat each other at a ramen shop, only for both to pass out in food comas on the counter, earning the wrath of the owner.
The night Issei convinced Leo to "borrow" one of Rias's spell books to impress the girls at school, which accidentally summoned a flock of mischievous imps that wreaked havoc on the clubroom.
The countless sparring sessions where Issei talked endless smack, only to get hilariously pummeled but always bounce back with that same goofy grin.
And the quiet moments on the school rooftop, where they shared their dreams, fears, and a bond deeper than either had realized.
Reality
Leo's breathing grew heavier, his chest heaving as the memories shattered, replaced by the brutal reality of Issei's lifeless body in his arms. He raised his blood-soaked hands, staring at them in horror as the weight of the moment crushed him.
"No… No, no, no, no…" Leo's voice cracked, turning into a choked sob. His shoulders shook violently as he bent over Issei, tears streaming freely down his face.
Riser's mocking laughter echoed across the rooftop. "Oh, this is priceless! Look at you! The mighty Leo, reduced to nothing but a sniveling wreck over some worthless pawn! Is this the best Rias Gremory has to offer?!"
Rias screamed at Riser, her voice raw with fury and grief. "You monster! He was my friend! You'll pay for this!"
Inside Leo's soul, the Berserker and Ragnar roared in unison.
"LET ME OUT!" the Berserker bellowed, his voice shaking the very fabric of Leo's mind. "I WILL END HIM! I WILL MAKE HIM SUFFER FOR THIS!"
"Leo," Ragnar growled, his tone uncharacteristically feral. "This is not just about vengeance. This is about justice. Use our strength—channel it—and make this bastard pay for everything he's done."
"Are you scared, lowly human?"
Riser's mocking voice echoed across the battlefield as he held up his bloodied hand, crimson droplets dripping from his fingertips. His golden eyes gleamed with a twisted mix of triumph and cruelty. "Do you see this, Rias? This is what happens when you defy me! Your pathetic pawn couldn't protect you, and now your rook will suffer the same fate. Tell me, Leo… are you too scared to fight back now?"
Leo's head hung low, his breath uneven. His bloodied hands trembled at his sides, not with fear, but with rage. When he finally looked up, his glowing blue eyes bore into Riser with a haunting intensity.
"No," Leo said quietly, his voice low and dangerous. "I'm not scared of you. I'm scared of what I'm about to do to you."
In a blur, Leo vanished from sight.
Riser's mocking grin faltered as a shadow appeared before him, and before he could react, Leo's foot slammed into his face with the force of a sledgehammer. The sheer impact sent Riser hurtling off the rooftop and into the forest, breaking through branches and trees before finally colliding with the ground in an explosion of dirt and splintered wood.
Leo stood on the edge of the roof, his shoulders heaving, his fists clenched tightly. The air around him grew heavy as his body began to tremble. His muscles swelled, veins rippling across his skin like lightning as his aura surged uncontrollably.
Rias, still kneeling near Issei's lifeless body, gasped as she watched the transformation. Her tear-streaked face twisted in a mix of fear and awe. "Leo… stop… You'll destroy yourself!"
But her voice couldn't reach him.
Yubelluna and Ravel, watching from a safe distance, shielded their faces as Leo's aura erupted like a violent storm. Blue and green energy spiraled around him, the colors blending into an overwhelming force. His eyes flickered between deep blue and vibrant green, each color glowing like a pair of burning suns.
Leo's body continued to grow, his muscles expanding as the Berserker's power overtook him. Tears streamed down his face, mixing with the blood and sweat staining his skin. His rage and grief melded into a single, primal roar that shook the heavens.
The sound was deafening.
Rias, Yubelluna, and Ravel all clamped their hands over their ears as the roar echoed through the air. Nearby windows shattered, and even the sturdy structure of the school trembled under the sheer force of his fury.
From the distant woods, an orange blur shot into the sky.
Riser, glowing with flames, rocketed toward Leo like a meteor, a blazing trail left in his wake. He collided with Leo in an explosion of fire, engulfing them both in a burning inferno.
"You foul creature! You're nothing but a lowly human!" Riser bellowed as he unleashed a volley of fireballs at close range, his voice filled with indignation and pride. "I WILL SCORCH YOU TO DUST!"
Leo tanked through the onslaught, the fire scorching his skin and blistering his flesh. But his crazed smile never faltered. With a snarl, he reached through the flames and grabbed Riser's face, his massive hand engulfing the noble's features.
"I WILL RIP YOUR HEART OUT!"
With a thunderous roar, Leo drove Riser into the ground, the impact sending shockwaves rippling through the battlefield. Dirt and debris flew into the air as the phoenix noble's body hit the earth with enough force to crater it.
Riser groaned, coughing up blood and bile as he struggled to push himself up. Despite his pain, his arrogance remained. "You little pest… You may beat me here… but know this: Riser always wins. I'll come back, and I'll destroy everything you value—just like that useless Sacred Gear user."
Leo's eyes darkened, his rage reaching a boiling point. "SHUT UP!"
He began to rain down punches, each blow carrying the full weight of his fury. The sound of breaking bones reverberated with every strike, drowning out Riser's grunts of pain. Blood splattered across the ground, painting the crater in crimson.
From the rooftop, Rias covered her mouth, her tears flowing freely as she watched the brutal display. "Leo… please, stop. You'll kill yourself…"
Yubelluna looked away, unable to watch any longer, while Ravel's trembling hands clutched at her chest.
"Brother..." Ravel whispered, her voice cracking.
Inside Leo's mind, Ragnar and the Berserker raged against the limitations of their host's body.
"His body can't take much more of this!" Ragnar growled, his voice strained with worry. "If he keeps going, it'll kill him!"
"I DON'T CARE!" the Berserker roared, his fury directed not at Leo, but at the situation itself. "HE HAS TO FINISH THIS! THAT BASTARD DESERVES TO SUFFER!"
Ragnar shook his head, his own frustration evident. "And what happens when Leo is gone? Will you fight for him then? Will you avenge him? Or will you leave Rias and the others to fend for themselves?"
The Berserker fell silent for a moment, his glowing eyes narrowing.
Leo's relentless assault slowed, his body screaming in protest as the strain of the Berserker's power pushed him to his limits. Clutching his side, he stumbled backward, his breathing labored.
Riser, bloodied and broken, chuckled weakly as he forced himself to his feet. "Y-You fool… You may be strong… but Riser always wins…"
Suddenly, his body began to glow with an intense yellow-orange light. The high-pitched screech that followed was almost unbearable, forcing everyone to cover their ears.
Leo's eyes widened in realization. "No…"
Riser grinned through his bloodied teeth. "This… is the end for you!"
The explosion that followed was blinding, engulfing the area in a fiery inferno. Leo was sent hurtling through the air, his body slamming into the school building with enough force to shatter walls. His limp form tumbled out the other side, landing in a heap amidst the rubble.
Leo's vision blurred, his body broken and bloodied. Every breath was a struggle, every movement a reminder of his limits.
Through the haze of pain, he saw a silhouette approach, the flickering light of a fireball illuminating the figure. A hand reached down, grabbing him by the hair and dragging him across the ground. The jagged edges of debris cut into his skin, but he barely felt it.
With a cruel laugh, the figure tossed him onto the ground like a discarded toy. The fireball burned brighter, casting long shadows that danced around him as the voices around him faded into a distant hum.
Darkness began to creep in at the edges of his vision, but one thought burned in his mind: This isn't over.
