Six months had passed since Rachel, Finn, and Serena had moved to New York City. The once-overwhelming city had slowly become home, its energy invigorating rather than intimidating. Their little family had settled into a comfortable rhythm: Finn working at his construction job, Serena thriving at her new preschool, and Rachel finally beginning to reclaim the dreams she thought she had lost.
For Rachel, the past half-year had been a whirlwind of classes, late-night study sessions, and rehearsals. Enrolling in school again had been a surreal experience, but it also felt like coming full circle. She had returned to where her dreams had started, but now she carried with her the strength and determination of a mother who wanted to show her daughter that anything was possible.
Tonight, however, was not about school or assignments. Tonight was about Rachel Berry stepping back into the spotlight.
A highly anticipated revival of Funny Girl was holding auditions for Fanny Brice. It was the role Rachel had dreamed of for as long as she could remember, and now, she was standing outside the theater, holding her headshot and résumé in her trembling hands.
"Mommy!"
Rachel turned at the sound of Serena's voice. Finn was walking toward her with their daughter in his arms, both of them bundled up against the crisp New York winter.
"You guys made it," Rachel said, her smile lighting up her face despite her nerves.
"Of course we did," Finn said, grinning as he set Serena down. "You think we'd miss your big audition?"
Serena reached for Rachel's hand, her tiny fingers squeezing tightly. "You're gonna do amazing, Mommy. Just like you always do when you sing to me."
Rachel knelt to Serena's level, her heart swelling with emotion. "Thank you, my little star. I needed to hear that."
Finn leaned down, placing a comforting hand on Rachel's shoulder. "You've got this, Rach. You've been working so hard for this moment, and I know you're going to blow them away."
Rachel stood, taking a deep breath as she looked at both of them. "I'm so lucky to have you guys. No matter what happens in there, I'm just happy to have you by my side."
Finn kissed her forehead, his warm smile giving her the courage she needed. "We'll be right here waiting for you when you're done."
With one last squeeze of Serena's hand, Rachel turned and walked through the theater doors, her heart pounding in her chest.
Inside the theater, Rachel sat in a small waiting area with other hopefuls, each one clutching their own dreams in the form of sheet music and headshots. The air buzzed with nervous energy, but Rachel closed her eyes, focusing on the steady rhythm of her breathing.
When her name was finally called, she stood, her legs slightly wobbly but her resolve firm. She stepped into the audition room, where a panel of casting directors and producers sat behind a long table.
"Rachel Berry," one of them said, looking over her résumé. "Welcome. What will you be singing for us today?"
Rachel smiled, channeling the confidence she had built over years of performing. "I'll be singing Don't Rain on My Parade."
A ripple of recognition spread through the panel, and Rachel took her place on the stage. As the pianist began the familiar intro, she felt a rush of adrenaline.
This was her moment.
As she sang, Rachel poured her heart into every note, every word. She thought about everything that had brought her to this point—the heartbreak, the sacrifices, the love she had found again. She thought about Serena, waiting outside with Finn, her biggest supporters cheering her on.
By the time she finished, the room was silent. The panel exchanged glances before the man in the center smiled.
"Thank you, Rachel. That was... outstanding."
Rachel's heart soared, but she kept her composure, thanking them politely before exiting the stage. Once outside the audition room, she let out a shaky breath, her emotions finally catching up with her.
Finn and Serena were waiting for her in the lobby. When they saw her, Serena ran to her, throwing her arms around her legs.
"How'd it go, Mommy?" Serena asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
Rachel scooped her up, hugging her tightly. "It went really well, sweetheart."
Finn approached, his grin wide and full of pride. "I told you you'd kill it."
Rachel laughed, feeling lighter than she had in months. "Thank you both for believing in me. I couldn't have done it without you."
As they stepped out into the bustling New York streets, Rachel felt a renewed sense of hope. The future was still uncertain, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be—on the brink of something incredible, with the people she loved most by her side.
