"Hanji?" I mumbled as Hanji Zoe's eyes brightened, bringing her focus back to me.
"Hi, little one! How was your nap?" she asked with a bright smile.
"Painful..." I replied. "Where is Free?"
"Your sister?" Hanji inquired. "She left."
I nodded, and then I was lifted and placed onto a horse.
"Where are we going?" I asked, feeling a mix of confusion and apprehension.
"The brat has no idea about anything," I heard Levi say coldly, prompting me to glare back at him.
"Shut up! I know I'm going away! I just don't know where!" I shot back. Levi is tough to crack, but if Isabel can, then maybe I can too.
"What is your name?" Levi asked, and I recognized it as a trick question. They already knew who we were; this was a test.
"Cain... " I answered nervously. Damn, Levi is intimidating in person! And Hanji is terrifyingly energetic. Erwin, on the other hand, remained calm as he approached and sat down on the same horse as me.
"Then, Cain, it is time to go home," he said.
Cain Smith, my new identity and name. Frieda had managed to modify some memories and get them to adopt me. The fake backstory, Erwin, my adoptive father, crafted was simple. I was an illegitimate child he had, my supposed mom died. Nobody questioned it, even Levi Ackerman got used to me.
I sat in front of a mirror, brushing my hair, creating two French braids that ended where my neck and head connected. I wonder, should I braid Historia's hair into a crown? Heh, that would be a great reference.
Now, it was time to write down what I knew, in the language of my past life. I don't know how many would be able to read my notes, but it was still better to hide them. One lock, write from right to left, a language that is still unknown, and place the notebook under the mattress.
Krista Lenz, true name Historia Reiss. A young girl who should not have been born, hated in childhood, used in adulthood, and invisible in her teen years. She was a cutie pie in the first season of the show...And well, shit went down later.
Number one:
Historia Reiss, or Krista Lenz, is my half-sister. In the anime and manga, she turns into the queen. She treated Eren and the rest badly for a while, maybe due to pressure. All her life she was cast away by her family and the only time she had contact with her mother was when she was thrown off. She has a martyr complex, and the only kindness she had was from Frieda. Her father only wants to use her and turn her into the queen due to her being the last of his family. Kenny Ackerman wants to kill Historia because she is illegitimate.
Therefore, to correct this, I need to fill her with all the love I can! And keep her as the cutie-pie she used to look in her first debut in the anime. She is weak so we will need to train together, maybe even show her sign language, oh! And Morse code!
Number two:
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are best friends from childhood who witnessed the wall fall. Yet, Eren already had violent tendencies, killing people to save Mikasa. Mikasa fell in love with him because of this. Eren has no memory of what his father did to him. Armin has no self-confidence and Mikasa has an attachment issue with Eren.
So, since I have the memories of his dad and experiments, I can pass them to Eren without him knowing, though I'm not sure if he should see his father's rampage. I'll also need to help Armin and Mikasa with their attachment issues and inferiority complex.
I sighed, why was this so difficult!? Since Frieda left, I have been part of a series of experiments to try to understand how these founding powers worked. I did manage to transform. And surprise... the founder was mine. Maybe it is because I did it before Frieda. I do not know. Both of us in a way were able to manipulate the memories of the subjects of Ymir. We also discovered new powers and implemented preventions for me (like not allowing me to make sounds unless it was an emergency) and for future shifters. I didn't tell them about the others but placed theories that have become confidential.
Ever since these were placed on me, we were moved into the castle Eren was locked in when he was done with his trial. Forest trees usually gave a calming scent, it helped me to mentally connect with Ymir Fritz.
I do think we are becoming close in a way. She seemed fascinated by my stories, but always kicked me out before "he" came into the mind space. I still don't know which "he" she is talking about.
Chores also gave me some chances to roam the forest. Today, I was taking my horse for a ride. In a way, I had another intention. I needed to find Historia Reiss... the sooner I fostered a relationship with her, the better, right?
I do not know how I was able to do it, and yet... I stood at golden hour, looking at the landscape before me. A familiar blonde was there sitting under a tree, reading. I wish I had brought a book. She's adorable! When I stood in front of her, her crystal blue eyes looked up at me in wonder. Time seemed to stop.
"Hi! I'm Abel Reiss, your sister!" I said with a wide smile. Hopefully, I didn't look very creepy...
"Hello..." She answered blinking twice. "I'm Historia"
"Can I call you Tori?"
"Sure!"
I had thought it would be harder for me to talk to her, being that I wasn't very good with people in my original world. It wasn't. She enjoyed listening or speaking, not minding my clumsy speech patterns.
I taught her my sign language as well, but she did not know why I needed it. I did not erase her memories like Frieda did, but she swore not to tell anyone about my existence. Perhaps it was selfish of me...But I changed the memories she had with Frieda and replaced her with myself.
Later on, I returned home.
"Girl!" I turned towards the unknown voice, halting the horse.
There stood two people with gas lanterns like the ones at the castle. They wore cloaks with hoods covering their heads. But their appearance was out of the ordinary. The female was a little taller than me, crimson red hair peeking from under her hood. The male stood tall, his skin a dark chocolate...something I hadn't seen either in the original anime or in this life before.
I tilted my head trying to let them know I wanted to ask what they needed.
"I see, you are not allowed to speak," said the male with a smile. "You're just like my dear Dorothy"
The red-haired girl nodded, giving me a small smile, clearly, Dorothy wasn't used to doing that.
"Can you sign?"
I nodded. They began to ask about a place to stay. I got the feeling I didn't have any option but to take them to my "home". I did try to resist, tell them I didn't know.
But Dorothy seemed to know I was lying. Her appearance changed, her whole being now seemed to be bleach white. Not even her eyes had color. Did Shingeki have ghosts like this? Was I dying again? Their expressions let me know I would not get any answers. And as quickly as she had changed, Dorothy was a redhead again.
I wasn't risking my life again, not yet. So, I let them follow me to the castle. And, as expected, Levi was waiting at the door. His frown was deeper than usual, it made sense, I was practically coming back with a pair of strangers. He didn't hesitate to grab me and put me behind him.
"Who are you?"
"Travelers," said the male stranger. "Is she your sister? We came here searching for the army when we found her wandering the woods."
"I see..." Levi looked back at me. "Go and wash up."
I nodded and did as I was told. I had made a mistake by leading these two here.
As I walked out in my nightgown drying my hair I saw Levi coming back. The stranger must have been sent somewhere else. I bit my lip nervously.
"Stop that and sit. Tell me everything." As he brushed my hair, I had some seconds to choose my words.
"I remembered my sister had been visiting someone..."
"And?"
"I wanted to visit this person...my half-sister, Historia Reiss" He didn't say anything, brushing painfully through a knot. I didn't yelp, it was part of my training to avoid making sounds. "I found those people in the woods... I didn't get much of a choice. They took me there. I swear I didn't tell them or anything"
"I see..." He had begun to braid my hair. "Ten laps tomorrow. The third floor should be spotless by the end of the day tomorrow." I hated the third floor, it always was the dustiest.
"Ok..." I could read his eyes better now, and he looked worried. "May I visit my sister?"
"Erwin will come soon, ask him"
I nodded, watching him leave.
Were they going to be sent to training?
"What you did was dangerous"I shifted uncomfortably. Of course, Erwin Smith would come to talk to me. And he was right, I didn't need him to tell me. "But I understand the situation. You don't need to worry. They are being sent to train, well, be evaluated to see if they can enter the elite force and maybe take care of you"
I nodded.
"I also heard you wanted to keep on meeting with this half-sister of yours..."
I looked at him hopefully.
"You will when you finish your daily chores. Only an hour."
I nodded again. Maybe I did it a bit too hard... I felt a bit dizzy. At least it made him smile and pet my head. This was fine... right?
