Chapter 10:Ghost in the Machine
Sally with Nicole's aide had stopped the gas, Nicole's now downloading all of 9's mainframe, however she oddly began to glitch out much to Sally's concern, Nicole asserting she was fine, yet this seemed very worrying.
Back in the Hanger all the bots lay defeated by Xeg the cyber gecko was undeterred, pulling himself up off the ground and firing a laser shot at Tails.
Before anyone else could react Fiona jumped in front of Tails taking the shot to her chest, her tiny body falling back to everyone's shock.
Fiona, now being cradled in Tails arms as Whisper in unhinged rage sniped the cyborg right through his cybernetic eye, everyone gathered around Fiona a smoking hole in her chest.
Tails panting his face in shock as he held her hand. "Fiona why, why did you do that?"
"Guess Tails, it's pretty obvious." She contently smiled but found it odd she could still speak. "Wait he just shot me in the heart why don't I feel like I'm dying, why am I not dead?" She reached a gloved hand to her wound and instead of blood it was a gooey, sticky black substance. "Oil? Why is there oil?" One of her eyes turned black her pupil a red circle. "What am I? WHAT AM I!!!" Her scream having a metallic and robotic pitch.
Fiona shivering and shaking still, she wasn't real, she was a robot or something? How did she not know this?
The tension in the room was palpable as everyone gathered around Fiona, who lay in Tails' arms with a look of bewilderment and terror on her face. The sight of the black, sticky oil oozing from the wound where she should have been bleeding was deeply unsettling, and her scream, now tinged with a metallic pitch, echoed in the hangar like a cry from the depths of some forgotten machine.
Sally, watching from the console with Nicole's assistance, felt a chill run down her spine. Nicole had managed to stop the gas, but now she was glitching out, her digital display flickering in and out. Sally reached out, concern evident in her eyes. "Nicole, are you sure you're okay? Something's not right here."
Nicole's voice crackled, distorted slightly. "I'm fine, Sally. Just a minor system overload from downloading Lord 9's mainframe. I will stabilize soon." But even as she spoke, her image continued to flicker, raising more doubts in Sally's mind.
Back in the hangar, the group was still reeling from the revelation about Fiona. Tails was visibly shaken, his heart pounding in his chest as he held onto Fiona's hand, trying to make sense of what was happening. "Fiona, you're... you're still here. You saved me, but... this... it doesn't make any sense."
Fiona's eyes, one still normal and the other now glowing red, darted around in confusion. She could feel something was wrong, something deep within her that she hadn't known existed until this moment. "Tails... I don't understand. I thought I was just... me. How could I not know? How could I not know I'm a... a machine?"
Whisper, standing nearby with her sniper rifle still smoking from the shot that took down Xeg, looked on with a mixture of rage and sorrow. The revelation about Fiona's true nature didn't diminish the sacrifice she had made, but it raised unsettling questions about who or what Fiona really was.
Bunnie knelt beside Fiona, her expression gentle and understanding despite the shock of the situation. She reached out, placing a comforting hand on Fiona's head, her voice calm and soothing. "Listen here, sugar. Whatever ya are, whatever ya were made to be, it don't change what ya did. You're a hero, Fiona. That's what matters most."
Fiona, still trembling, looked up at Bunnie with a mix of fear and gratitude. "But... Bunnie, I don't even know if I'm real. If I'm just some machine, some... copy, then what does that make me?"
Bunnie's eyes softened, and she shook her head slowly. "It makes ya someone who chose to protect the folks ya care about, even when ya didn't have to. Machines don't make choices like that, darlin'. Only people do. So don't you go thinkin' less of yerself just 'cause ya found out somethin' unexpected."
Tails, still holding Fiona's hand, nodded in agreement, though his own heart was heavy with uncertainty. "Fiona... you're still the same person who's been fighting alongside us. No matter what you're made of, you're our friend."
Fiona's mind raced as she processed their words, struggling to reconcile her newfound identity with the person she believed herself to be. She looked down at her hand, now trembling, and then at the black oil still seeping from her wound. "I... I don't know what to think, but... thank you. All of you. I just... I don't know what comes next."
Before anyone could respond, Nicole's voice crackled through the comms, her glitching icon appearing on the screen. "Sally, we have a problem," she said, her tone serious. "The data I've been downloading... it is not just files. There's something else here. Something... alive."
Sally's heart skipped a beat as she stared at the flickering image of her AI companion. "What do you mean, 'alive'? Nicole, what's happening?"
Nicole's form shimmered and glitched more severely now, her voice distorted. "It is some kind of virus... no, it's more than that. It is like a ghost in the machine, a presence trying to take control. I am fighting it, but... I need help."
The room went silent, everyone's attention now focused on the screen where Nicole's image was slowly being overtaken by static. Sally's mind raced as she tried to think of a solution. "Nicole, can you isolate it? Cut off its access to the systems?"
Nicole's voice wavered, flickering between her usual tone and something darker, more sinister. "I am trying, Sally... but it's strong. Too strong. I think it is... connected to Lord 9's mainframe. It has been lying dormant, waiting for someone to tap into it."
As the team realized the gravity of the situation, Sonic stepped forward, his usual bravado tinged with concern. "If this thing's connected to Lord 9's tech, then we need to shut it down at the source. We can't let it take over Nicole or conect back to any of our systems."
Sally nodded, determination setting in. "You're right. We need to find the core of this virus and destroy it before it spreads any further."
But before they could act, Nicole's voice broke through again, this time with a desperate edge. "Sally... it is trying to access... me... I cannot hold it off much longer."
Fiona, still lying in Tails' arms, suddenly spoke up, her voice filled with resolve. "If I'm part machine, then maybe... maybe I can help. Maybe I can connect to the mainframe and fight this thing from the inside."
Tails looked down at Fiona, his eyes wide with a mix of fear and hope. "But Fiona, we don't know what'll happen if you do that. You might... you might not come back."
Fiona's eyes, now glowing red in both irises, met Tails' gaze with a steely determination. "I have to try, Tails. I can't just sit here and do nothing while this thing takes over Nicole. I don't care what I am—I'm going to fight for all of you."
Sally placed a hand on Tails' shoulder, her expression grim yet understanding. "Tails, it's her choice. If she thinks she can help, we have to let her try."
With a nod, Tails gently set Fiona down and helped her to her feet. "Okay, Fiona... just promise you'll come back. Promise me."
Fiona gave him a small, reassuring smile, though there was a sadness behind it. "I promise, Tails."
As Fiona prepared to connect herself to the mainframe finding a slot on the back of her neck that had an ethernet cable in it, the others gathered around, their hearts heavy with the knowledge that this could be a one-way trip for their new friend. But Fiona's resolve never wavered. She knew what she had to do, and she was ready to face whatever lay ahead, even if it meant confronting the ghost in the machine that had been lying in wait for them all.
Fiona's hands trembled as she stood in the vast digital landscape, surrounded by the mesmerizing flow of data streams. She felt a deep, gnawing uncertainty in the pit of her stomach. Her memories—the warmth of her parents' embrace, the simple joys of living in Vulpasville, the anxiety of being a spy, the thrill of being a Freedom Fighter—felt so real. But now, they seemed like fabrications, artificial constructs implanted in her mind to give her a sense of identity. Was she just a puppet, a mere extension of some machine's will?
Her heart—or what she thought was her heart—ached as she recalled the moments she'd shared with Tails and the others. Those memories, filled with laughter and camaraderie, made her feel alive, but now, that sense of being was slipping away. As she gripped her chest, feeling the cold, sticky oil instead of blood, a wave of despair washed over her. What am I? The question echoed in her mind like a relentless drumbeat, drowning out all other thoughts.
But then she saw Nicole—trapped, struggling against the dark tendrils of that malevolent digital entity. Fiona's confusion and fear were momentarily eclipsed by a surge of protective instinct. It doesn't matter what I am, she thought, determination hardening her resolve. What matters is that I do what's right.
"Here's Jenny!" Fiona smirked, summoning a gleaming axe in the digital space. She launched herself at the cloud, slicing through the tendrils with a ferocity she hadn't known she possessed. The act of fighting, of trying to save Nicole, grounded her, giving her a fleeting sense of purpose.
As Fiona hacked away at the tendrils, she caught sight of something within the dark mass—a small Mobian child, crouched in pain. She faltered for a moment, her axe hovering in the air. A child? The realization hit her like a ton of bricks. What if this entity wasn't just a monster? What if it was something—or someone—trapped and suffering?
"I think someone's inside of it," Fiona called out to Nicole. "Maybe it was trying to grab you because it wants help? Or that thing grabbed that kid too. Either way, we gotta do something right?"
Nicole, her voice calm yet analytical, hesitated. "This is unprecedented. The logic of it is unclear, but... if you believe it's the right course of action, proceed with caution."
Fiona nodded, her mind racing. She reached out with her free hand, willing the digital space around her to respond. To her surprise, it did. Her sheer determination seemed to manifest as power, pulling the small figure from the clutches of the dark cloud. The child—a young lynx Mobian—collapsed into Fiona's arms, shivering.
"Hey, it's okay," Fiona whispered, trying to comfort the trembling child. "I know what it's like to be scared and not understand what's happening. But don't worry, big sis has got you. What do you need?"
The lynx kit, her voice barely a whisper, pointed towards Nicole. "I came here for her, but that weird old cyber virus caught me."
Nicole, floating as an orb beside them, suddenly stiffened. Her voice, usually so composed, wavered with confusion. "I... I know you. This is illogical. You are... Nicole Ellidy-Lynx. My AI was based upon you."
The lynx kit shook her head slowly, her eyes filled with a sadness that seemed far beyond her years. "No, no... I am you. You are me, the part of me that was digitized by Dr. Robotnik using my grandpa's research. My psyche got split in half... I just wanna be whole again."
Fiona's mind raced. The implications were staggering. If this child was indeed the original Nicole, then the Nicole they knew was a fragment of this being. And this dark entity... it was trying to devour them both, to claim them.
Suddenly, the dark mass began to reform, its tendrils reaching out once more, hungrier than ever. Fiona's breath caught in her throat as she saw the ominous cloud creeping closer. She tightened her grip on the lynx kit and sprinted towards the exit with Nicole beside them, her heart—or whatever passed for it—pounding in her chest.
"RUN!" she screamed, adrenaline pushing her forward as the tendrils lashed out, narrowly missing them.
They were so close to the exit, but then, they slammed into an invisible wall—a firewall, shimmering and impenetrable. Fiona cursed under her breath. "Oh great, we're stuck! Nicole, do something!"
Both the orb and the lynx kit looked at Fiona when she said that. "Yes, I will," they replied in unison, their voices blending into one.
The lynx kit reached out to the orb, her hand trembling slightly. "We need to recombine. The resulting system shock will knock all of us out of the system and back where we belong."
The Nicole orb nodded, transforming into energy that coursed through the lynx kit, merging them into one. As they fused, a blinding light emanated from the lynx, momentarily distracting them from the danger.
Fiona, still holding the lynx kit, couldn't help but stare in awe at the transformation. But her awe turned to horror as she felt a sharp pain in her side. She looked down to see one of the tendrils piercing her digital form, her body beginning to fragment into pixels.
"Aw man..." Fiona gasped, her voice weakening. "T-Tails, t-tell him... I'm sorry." Her digital form was pulled into the virus cloud, her consciousness fading as she was absorbed.
"NO FIONA!" Nicole's voice echoed, filled with raw emotion as a massive flash of light exploded from her.
--
Back in the real world, the atmosphere in the hangar was suffocating. Fiona's robotic body, which had been so full of life and spirit moments ago, was now a twisted, smoking husk. Her once bright eyes were dim, her small frame lying lifeless on the cold floor.
Tails, kneeling beside her, felt like his world was crumbling. He shook her gently, his voice choked with sobs. "Fiona, please... wake up... please..." But there was no response, only the eerie silence that followed.
Bunnie, her own tears streaming down her face, placed a comforting hand on Tails' shoulder. Whisper, usually so stoic, was visibly shaking, her fists clenched in silent fury. Antoine stood nearby, his head bowed, his heart heavy with grief.
Sonic, usually the one to rally the team in moments like this, found himself at a loss. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles were shaking, his body trembling with barely contained rage. He wanted to scream, to lash out, to do something—anything—but all he could do was stand there, powerless.
Only Lord 9 seemed unfazed by the tragedy. Sitting cuffed against the wall, he scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain. "What a waste. All that Gizoid tech I dug up, wasted. And that OS AI I designed with Dr. Robotnik? Perfect too. But her? She was nothing more than a tool, a resource that's been squandered."
His callous words cut through the hangar like a knife, causing Tails to finally break down completely. He cradled Fiona's lifeless form, sobbing uncontrollably, his small frame wracked with grief. She had saved him, and now she was gone.
The Freedom Fighters gathered around, their hearts heavy with sorrow. They mourned not just for the loss of their friend, but for the cruel reality of her existence. Fiona, the brave and kind-hearted vixen they had come to love, had been a robot all along. But in the end, it didn't matter what she was made of. She had been real to them, and her sacrifice was painfully, devastatingly real.
As they stood in the hangar, each of them wrestling with their grief, a sense of resolve began to form. Fiona's sacrifice would not be in vain. They would fight on, not just to avenge her, but to honor the courage and love she had shown them.
To be continued…
