The blinding white light slowly began to fade, giving way to a new and unfamiliar landscape. Vega Jane blinked against the brightness, her heart pounding as her surroundings came into focus. She and Delph stood on what appeared to be a vast, desolate plain. The ground was a cracked mosaic of pale stone, stretching endlessly in every direction. Overhead, the sky churned with swirling clouds of silver and gold, and there was no sun—only an unearthly glow that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
Delph exhaled a shaky breath beside her, gripping his club tightly. "What... where are we, Vega?"
Vega didn't answer right away. She turned slowly, taking in the strange, surreal place they had stumbled into. Destin was warm in her hand, the chain vibrating faintly, as though it was trying to communicate something to her.
"We're somewhere... else," she finally said, her voice steady despite the unease curling in her chest. "This isn't the Quag anymore. It's... beyond it."
"Beyond it?" Delph repeated, incredulous. "But there's nothing beyond the Quag. That's what the Council's always said."
"And we know how trustworthy they are," Vega shot back, her eyes narrowing. "The Council doesn't want anyone to know what's out here. Which means whatever this place is... it's important. It's dangerous. And it's the key to everything they've been hiding."
Delph frowned, casting a wary glance at the endless plain. "I still don't like it."
Vega looked at him, a small smirk playing at her lips. "If you did like it, I'd be worried."
Delph snorted, though his expression remained serious. "So what now?"
Vega tilted her head, listening to the hum of Destin as it pulsed in her hand. It felt stronger than before, almost alive, pulling her gently in one direction. She turned to follow the invisible force, motioning for Delph to come with her.
"We follow the path," she said. "Or whatever passes for a path here."
Delph fell in step beside her, his heavy boots echoing against the cracked ground. They walked in silence for what felt like hours, the monotony of the plain broken only by strange shimmering shapes on the distant horizon. Vega kept her focus on the pull of Destin, trusting it to guide them. It wasn't until they had crossed what seemed like miles of the barren expanse that Delph suddenly stopped short.
"Vega. Look."
Vega turned and followed his gaze. Ahead of them, the ground seemed to dip into a wide, circular crater. At its center sat a monolithic stone—a massive obelisk that looked as though it had been carved from the same material as the archway they'd passed through. Its surface glowed faintly with the same blue runes, and even from a distance, Vega could feel its power thrumming in the air.
"Another seal," she murmured, stepping forward, her heart racing.
Delph grabbed her arm. "Hold on, Vega. This... this feels wrong. That thing's not just a rock."
"It's more than that," Vega agreed. She pulled free of Delph's grasp and descended into the crater, each step taking her closer to the obelisk. Delph hesitated before following, muttering under his breath about her stubbornness.
As they neared the stone, the runes on its surface flared brighter. Vega held Destin up, the chain writhing in her grasp like a living serpent. The closer she got, the more intense its movements became, as though it recognized something in the stone.
"This is what the Council didn't want us to find," she said, her voice filled with awe. "This stone… it's a part of something bigger. The seals, the portals… they're all connected. This place is connected."
Before Delph could respond, a deafening boom echoed across the crater. The ground beneath their feet trembled, and a fissure split open around the base of the obelisk. Vega stumbled back, shielding her eyes as a brilliant light poured from the crack.
A voice—deep and resonant—spoke from within the light.
"The trespassers have come."
Vega's blood ran cold. She turned to Delph, who was staring at the obelisk in horror.
"Vega... I think we woke something up."
"No," Vega whispered, her grip tightening on Destin. "We found something. Now we just have to survive it."
The light from the fissure flared brighter, and from its depths, a figure began to emerge—a towering being of stone and fire, its form crackling with energy. It raised its massive head, its hollow eyes glowing with an unnatural blue light, and let out a roar that shook the very ground beneath them.
Vega gritted her teeth, readying herself for a fight. "Delph, stay close!"
"Don't have to tell me twice!" Delph shouted, raising his club as the monstrous figure began to advance.
The ground rumbled, the fissure widening with every step the creature took. Vega could feel its power pressing down on her like a weight, but she didn't let it slow her.
"Come on, then," she muttered under her breath, Destin glowing in her hands. "Show me what you've got."
With a battle cry, Vega lunged forward, Destin striking out in a brilliant arc of light. The creature roared in response, and the fight for the truth—and for survival—began.
