The sun was high and unrelenting the next day as Chloe and Rachel wandered through a stretch of coastline dotted with weathered driftwood and tangled seaweed. Their truck was parked a few hundred yards away, a distant sentinel watching over their makeshift adventure.

Rachel had kicked off her shoes, the warm sand clinging to her feet as she darted ahead, turning occasionally to beckon Chloe to catch up.

"Come on, slowpoke!" Rachel called, her laughter carried by the ocean breeze. "You're missing everything."

Chloe rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a grin. "Some of us aren't built for marathon sprints, Rachel. You've got enough energy for both of us anyway."

Rachel stopped suddenly and spun to face her. "That's why we're the perfect pair. I pull you forward, and you keep me grounded."

Chloe's steps faltered, caught off guard by the sincerity in Rachel's voice. She shoved her hands into her hoodie pocket, her gaze darting to the waves. "Yeah, well, I don't think anyone's ever accused me of being grounded before."

Rachel stepped closer, her expression unreadable. "That's the thing about you, Chloe. You're more solid than you think. You're my anchor. Without you, I'd probably just drift away."

Chloe looked at her, the weight of her words sinking in. She wanted to make a joke, to brush it off, but Rachel's gaze was steady and unwavering. It left no room for deflection.

"Guess we're stuck with each other then," Chloe said finally, her voice softer than she intended.

Rachel's lips curved into a smile, and she reached out to take Chloe's hand. "Stuck sounds so boring. Let's call it… tethered. Connected. Like we're part of something bigger."

Chloe felt the warmth of Rachel's hand in hers and let herself lean into it, even if just a little. It wasn't easy for her to accept moments like this, to let her walls down, but Rachel had a way of making it feel safe. Natural.

"Fine," Chloe said, her lips twitching into a smirk. "But if we're tethered, does that mean I get to pull you back when you're being a drama queen?"

Rachel laughed, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Only if I get to drag you into my chaos when you're being a grump."

"Deal."

They stood there for a moment, the sound of the ocean filling the space between them, before Rachel tugged on Chloe's hand, pulling her toward the water. "Come on. Let's see how far out we can go without getting soaked."

"Rachel Amber, queen of questionable decisions," Chloe muttered, but she followed anyway.

The tide lapped at their ankles as they waded in, the water cool and refreshing against the heat of the day. Rachel let out a delighted squeal as a wave splashed up higher than expected, soaking the hem of her dress. Chloe couldn't help but laugh, the sound genuine and unguarded.

For the first time in what felt like forever, the weight of the world seemed to lift, leaving only the two of them and the vast, endless ocean. And for Chloe, that was more than enough.
