The most well known navies of the 22nd century are those that travel the void, the space based forces that take their inspiration from those that instead traveled the seas. However, maritime navies did not disappear with the introduction of the space warship. During peacetime, these forces are a necessity for ensuring the security of the high seas from both human and natural dangers. During war, these navies are still powerful threats for ground based forces and even those in orbit.
The ships of humanity's blue navies still retain many of the names borrowed by their voidbound cousins: corvettes and frigates and cruisers still traveling the seas of earth alongside cutters and aircraft carriers and submarines. These vessels are often significantly cheaper than military spacecraft due to not needing some of the more expensive systems seen on those ships. They nonetheless can carry formidable armaments, a danger to any spacecraft that gets too close to a planet's surface, or even its orbit in some cases.
Most of these vessels share similar roles to those they filled in the 20th and 21st centuries, protecting shipping and supporting ground forces through resupply and sire support. Some vessels, however, gained a new role: surface to orbit fire. This latter role is usually given to submarines, which became increasingly popular as both their price significantly dropped, and their necessity role with warships now sitting in orbit, ready to rain fire down upon any ship they can find. Missiles not dissimilar to those used on spacecraft are deployed by submarines, which disappear beneath the waves as quickly as they came. The use of these vessels and other groundside planetary defenses ensure that having orbital supremacy does not guarantee victory in modern warfare.
The Systems Alliance Maritime Corp was created in 2153 to provide the Alliance with maritime support on planet's across its space. The SAMC operates several small patrol ships and submarines across multiple planets, though many of the older colonies have started operating their own maritime navies and coast guards to fulfill its role. Since 2155 the SAMC has been attempting to gain funds for the construction or purchase of multiple maritime warships and submarines to expand its forces beyond the mostly coast guard and supporting duties it has. These have failed, alongside SAMC's multiple attempts at having the Marine Corp's gunboats transferred to its authority and requests for its commander to be elevated to equal the Secretary of The Fighter Force instead of the Rear Admiral equivalency she holds as of the First Contact War.
