Dark Side

Starts at 3x14. Kolena.

She should avoid him; she knows that much…but with so much happening in her life she decides that she'll have this one uncomplicated night. But things are never so simple, not for her, or him.

Elena sighed and leaned her forehead into the palm of her hand. She looked up in time to see Caroline take a massive bite of her burger and begin chomping.

'It's all so weird. The originals are throwing a ball. Like an actual ball.' Elena frowned and took a sip of her coke.

'It is some twisted Cinderella fetish is what it is. And why does the evil witch want an audience with you?' Caroline set her burger down and copied Elena's face, a frown making itself known.

'I have no idea. There is only one way to find out' the brunette raised a thoughtful eyebrow and smiled at the blonde.

'I thought you told Damon and Stefan that you weren't going?' Caroline's frown deepened.

'I did which is all the more reason why I need a drama free bodyguard.' Elena's smile widened.

'Well, I think a Salvatore would look better in a tux. And by that, I mean Stefan.' Caroline paused and then proceeded to shovel a load of fries in her mouth.

'Ugh, I cannot deal with either of the Salvatore's right now. Stefan and I have drifted and my feelings for him have changed, I care for him, but it is not the same, and whatever he feels, he's channelling it all against Klaus. And Damon…it is just never a good idea.' Elena grimaced.

As Caroline opened her mouth to reply, she spotted Rebekah and one of her brothers making their way towards them. She rolled her eyes, and Elena turned around to follow her gaze. She gave Rebekah a hardened stare, but her eyes quickly looked past her and settled on who she assumed must be one of her brothers. He was tall, with beautiful thick dark hair, and stormy deep brown eyes His face was chiselled, and Elena could tell he worked out a lot. He caught her staring, and a smirk worked its way onto his face. Elena felt her face heating up and she looked away.

'Careful Caroline. It's all well and good until she stabs you in the back.' Rebekah said in a sweet fake voice.

'What are you doing here? I know your moms' rules. No hurting the locals.' Elena snapped. Caroline scoffed, and gave her head a light shake, and focused her stare at the bar where Matt was working.

'Get over yourself Elena. It's not all about you.' The blond original pouted, beginning to lose her patience. She glanced over her shoulder at her brother, who looked like he was enjoying the scene unfold in front of him.

'This is my brother Kol; I've been showing him round.'

Kol stepped forward, and he cocked his head to the side. 'Nice to meet you both' Elena felt her face heat up, and he focused his intense stare on the doppelganger. His smirk dropped and he really was looking at her in the most unnerving fashion. Elena subconsciously shivered and looked down.

Rebekah looked over to the bar and walked off, bored with the interaction. After a slight delay, Kol followed, turning round to fix Elena with an intense look before turning back round. Caroline let out a little laugh and grinned at Elena.

'You were right to dismiss the Salvatore's. You should take Rebekah's brother instead. He was sooo giving you his sex eyes' Caroline wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

Elena scoffed and stole a glance at the bar where Kol was just smirking down at her again, having heard every word Caroline said. 'Behave Caroline' she gave her friend a small smile.

It was then that the pair observed Rebekah handing over a party invite to Matt. Their faces turned to shock and both girls turned to face each other.

'Oh my god. She is inviting him to the ball. Why is she inviting him?!' Caroline hissed, looking like she wanted to smack Rebekah's head off the bar.

Elena slumped and leaned back in her chair, rolling her eyes. 'Probably to get this reaction from us.'

Caroline snarled and drummed her fingers on the table as she watched Rebekah and Kol head towards the exit. 'What time is this stupid dance?'

A few hours later, and Elena was staring into her mirror. Her eyes washing over her appearance. Her hair was down with big loose curls that she had pushed off her shoulders, so it flowed down her back. She was a deep red dress that hugged her curves down just passed her bottom, and then fanned out layered with squares of different lace, mesh, and silk. She wore slim line simple black strappy heels. Satisfied with how she looked. She pulled on her black evening coat and left her house. Locking the door behind her. Elena steeled herself before walking to her car, she didn't like not knowing what lay ahead and she was praying that Stefan and Damon would leave her be so that she could meet with Esther and figure out what was going on.

She stepped through the glorious double French doors and drank in her surroundings with wide innocent eyes. Everything was beautiful and brightly lit. Greedily, she drank it all in, impressed (Not that she would willingly admit that out loud) Out of nowhere Stefan and Damon materialized at her side, a frown quickly worked it's way on to her face, displeasure making itself obvious.

'I thought we told you not to come.' Damon said, looking unimpressed. Elena stared determinedly ahead.

'I am not your puppet. You cannot boss me around all the time and expect me to do your bidding.' Elena bit out.

Stefan's uninterested gaze swept over her and Damon, and he cleared his throat, not even bothering to say anything before walking off. Elenas frown deepened and her eyes burned a hole into the beautifully polished hardwood floor.

'Can we go back to a time where the old Stefan cared if Elena lived or died?' Damon called out in annoyance after his brother.

Stefan paused and faced Damon and Elena. 'What for? That's your job now.' He continued to stalk off.

Elena felt tears prick at her eyes and she swallowed nervously, her hands smoothing out non-existent wrinkle in her dress. Damon ran a hand through his hair and looked at Elena.

'You look beautiful by the way.' He said brightly in an attempt to cheer her up. His fingers grazed her arm.

Elena looked down and shook her head. Determined not to cry. She pulled her arm away from his touch and scanned the room hoping to find Caroline any second and make her escape.

'Don't.' she whispered.

'The last thing I need right now is your validation.'

The pretty brunette lifted her gaze and sighed. Unable to locate Caroline She walked off, without giving Damon a second glance. Elena's gaze flitted around the room, and her mind began to wander. Before realizing what had happened, she collided into something solid. She gasped and grabbed onto a pair of muscled forearms to prevent herself from falling.

'I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention' she looked up and caught herself staring into Kol Mikaelsons eyes. His eyes bored into hers and he smiled.

'It's quite alright darling, worse things have happened.'

He smirked down at her and Elena bit her lip. Oh boy, if he kept looking at her like that she was going to get into hot water. They made their way over to the drinks bar. The oldest Mikaelson brother headed towards them. He nodded at Kol, and then turned towards the brunette.

'Elena Gilbert, I presume? I'm Finn Mikaelson. You are here to see my mother.'

Elena quirked an eyebrow, and subconsciously took a step back until she was pressed lightly against Kol's chest.

'Is she here?' She asked nervously.

'Her request did not include your friends. He stated.

'I didn't ask them to be here, they're just trying to protect me. You may not know this, but your mothers already tried to kill me once.' She bit back.

Finn nodded in acceptance of what Elena said. 'If you want to see my mother, you'll need to be alone.'

It was then that Elijah nodded at his siblings, and they began to move together on the staircase.

'I'll be back in just a moment Darling.' Kol muttered into Elena's ear, his hot breath tickling the nape of her neck.

The originals gathered on the staircase and Elena's eyes widened. They looked like royalty. It was then that Esther walked down the stairs and took up her place beside Elijah.

'Welcome, thank you for joining us. You know whenever my mother brings our family together like this, its tradition for u to commence the evening with a dance. Tonight's pick is a centuries old waltz, so if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom.'

Esther then silently retreated up the stairs. And the crowd began to move towards the ballroom. Kol found himself in front of Elena and he held out his hand to her, a sly smile playing at his lips.

'Would you like to dance Elena?'

Elena liked the way, her name sounded on his tongue. Not trusting herself to speak she simply nodded and let him lead her onto the dance floor. They danced together so gracefully, and Elena let out a small gasp, as Kol pressed her lithe frame tighter against his. He smirked. They did not speak, as the tension between the pair only grew.

'My mother wishes to speak with you?'

Elena frowned; she assumed Kol would've known why.

'Uh, yeah. Is something wrong?'

Kol gave her a strained smile. 'Well, me and Elijah find her ability to forgive my brother after everything he's done to destroy this family - Well, it strikes us as a little strange to say the least.'

Elena cocked her head to the side and tilted her face up closer to Kols. 'Do you think it's an act?'

'It has my brother and I asking questions we never thought we would ask. Can I depend on you to tell me what she says?' Kol asked in a lowly voice so as not to be overhead.

The song was drawing to an end and Kol moved them and twirled Elena until they were off the dance floor. They walked upstairs and down one of the hallways. It was an odd feeling; Elena didn't trust him and safe was from the word shed use to describe how she felt when she was with him, but his presence was addicting, and she couldn't help but me drawn to him. Elena swallowed and turned round to look at the youngest Mikaelson brother.

'Of course. I'll cone find you later, okay?'

He nodded and left her alone outside of the study. Elena gave a brisk knock on the door. Finn walked over to the door and opened it, revealing Elena to be alone. She walked in and noticed Esther holding some type of smoking plant.

'It's only sage. I've spelled it so we can speak freely without fear of being overheard. That'll be all Finn, thank you.'

The oldest brother bowed his head and left the room. Esther continued to speak.

'You must have a million questions for me Elena. Please.'

She gestured towards the sofa and Elena sat on one end, the witch on the other.

'How are you alive? Are you a ghost? Or..' the question tumbled out of Elena's mouth. She had been desperate to ask.

'Not exactly. When I died the witch Ayana preserved my body with a spell. She was a close friend of mine and, an ancestor of you friend Bonnie.' Esther explained, her hands smoothing over the skirts of her dress.

'So that's why only Bonnie and her mother could open up the casket.' Elena breathed out.

Esther nodded and continued- 'They complete the Bennet bloodline. I drew power from them and their ancestors who were with me on the other side.'

Elena pinched the bridge of her nose. 'So, you've been on the other side for a thousand years?'

'Nature's way of punishing me for turning my family into vampires. But there is a way for me to undo the evil I created.'

Elena gasped. 'You're going to help us kill Klaus, aren't you?'

Esther smirked. 'I understand Rebekah shared the story of my family. How I upset the balance of nature by turning my children into vampires.'

Elena let out a shaky breath. 'She said you did it to protect them from the werewolves.'

'It is true. But in no time at all, they began to feed on human blood. They ravaged the town with no remorse. Eventually Nikklaus turned against me. '

'How are you gonna kill him? He is immortal.' Elena stood up and began to pace.

'It will take time, magic and your assistance.' Esther explained, also now standing.

Elena turned to face the original witch. 'What do I have to do with it?'

Esther gave a sad smile. 'My children believe I'm holding this ball to celebrate our reunion. But in truth I've gathered them here to perform a ritual. The first step requires blood from the doppelganger. Only a drop. Its essence will be in the champagne toast later this evening. Will you do it or shall I?'

Esther was now holding a long thin knife in her hands. Elena was taken aback and considered her options, but after a moments consideration she held out a shaking hand and gave Esther her finger. Klaus had to die, he had killed her and people she cared about. Esther pricked her finger with the knife and squeezed the blood into a glass chalice that was filled with liquid.

'Elijah and now also Kol seem to be more suspicious than the others, so they may need more persuasion than the rest. But they must all drink at the toast in order to be linked as one. '

Elena frowned. 'What do you mean? 'Linked as one'?

Esther let out a little laugh. 'You said yourself Klaus can't be killed. But tonight's spell links all my children together, so that if one goes, they all go.'

'What?!' Elena cried out, she had not expected this, the others didn't deserve to die right? Not Elijah especially, he had only wanted his family to be together again.

'I love my family Elena, but they are an abomination. I betrayed nature when I created them. It's my duty to kill them. You may go now.' Esther commanded.

Elena left, and after walking down the hallway and taking a left towards the stairs she leaned against the wall and tried to calm her manic breathing down. This was not right, she couldn't allow Esther to go through with it, and her mind then began towards to Kol. AS soon he floated about in her thought he appeared at her side.

'So how was my mother?' He asked lowly as he led her down the stairs. When they reached the bottom he offered her a glass of champagne. Elena took a gulp before answering.

'Intense.' Was all she could muster at the moment. She looked past Kol's shoulder and spotted Esther on the staircase looking at her.

'Elena? Should I be concerned about my mother's intentions?' Kol pressed, searching Elena's eyes for an answer beginning to lose his patience. Elena not knowing how else to tell him with Esther watching, quickly put her hand on the back of Kols neck and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. God he was delicious, but Elena did not have time to think about that now. She drew back so that there was still little distance between them.

'Don't drink the champagne. 'She muttered barely moving her lips. The brunette gave him a pleading look and he nodded sharply once.

Esther then drew the guests in for a toast and everyone clinked their glasses. Kol was careful not to drink from his own glass and merely pretended. His eyes flickered towards Elena and replayed the burning feel of her lips touching his. It was an addiction. He needed and wanted it to happen again. But first he needed the reason for not drinking from his glass and to understand what was going on.

Kol placed his hand on Elena's arm and pulled her up the stairs and down another hallway until they were presumably in a bedroom. Elena had let him drag her away because she assumed he would want answers, she also hated to admit but she liked how reckless she felt around him. Kol flicked on a lamp and Elena took in her surroundings. The floor was a dark mahogany and the walls were navy. In the corner of the room were bookshelves and a bedside table, which then took Elena's eyes to the big king size bed in the middle of the room.

'Well? What happened down there?' Kol asked taking a step towards Elena until she was backed up against the wall. Elena drew in a sharp breath at their proximity. How was Elena meant to focus when this beautiful man had her backed against a wall? She wanted to tell him, really. But she knew it would be better to tell him when his mother and Finn were not around, and she had to tell the others too. Elena knew how it would look if they suddenly left the room, and she didn't want to raise Esther's suspicions as to why she was alone with one her of her children.

'Kiss me.' She blurted out. Kol looked at her confused before smirking. His hand glided behind Elena's back and he pressed himself against her.

'Don't play games with me Elena, you won't win.' Kol sneered. He breathed in her scent and did his best to hold his composure. She was driving him insane. He lowered his head and kissed slowly down her neck and let his fangs take over and scrape against the column of her throat.

'I can't tell you here, and not in this house. It wouldn't be safe.' Elena whispered fearfully, she couldn't help but melt under Kols touch, her hands betrayed her and she let them weave through Kols hair pressing his face closer to her neck. She let out a small moan into his ear. Kol considered her response. The doppelganger would have told him if she could he realized and she was trying to avoid the pair of them getting caught up in something bad, first with the champagne and then secondly with the two of them in this room together.

He pulled back to look at her, he stared at her with his vampire features before relaxing and his human face came back. Kol then gave into Elena request and slowly lowered his head to hers; he could tell it had been a while since shed been seduced and taken to bed.

Their lips met, and Elena's mind exploded. She couldn't get enough, his touch was so gentle, but she could feel the force behind it, and she wanted it, she wanted him…
