Here I was a 23 year old Registered Nurse, unmarried and no kids. Unless you count my dog Ty. Then yes, I have a big hairy child. A big hairy Cane Corso, Wolf child mix. Honestly, I am completely fine with that. I have been working and trying to find out who I am, ancestry wise. I am supposed to be Native American, but looking at me I have some features that a "pale face" would have. I want to know why that is. My mother looks the part of my family. My grandmother Elaine, on the other hand, looks like me. Well I guess I would look like her.
We are both tall women, standing at around 5'9 with long, silky, black curls that hang to our waist. My grandmother's curls are grey though. We have a larger chest and thicker thighs. Athletic built with curves my dad once said. Our eyes stand out the most. Long eyelashes, round shaped, and the brightest blue you have ever seen. Almost like the ocean. Other than the tight curls in our hair and the bright blue eyes, we have the dark Native skin and the black hair. I would say our long muscular legs come from that side of the family as well. At least that is what we like to think. We have been called beautiful a few times in our lives anyway.
I missed my grandmother. She was like my best friend and my shoulder to cry on. She always cared about what I had to say or my adventures and curious endeavors. She lived two hours from my home and eight to nine hours from Spokane, where I currently reside and work. I lived with my mom and dad on the Makah reservation where I grew up. Then when I finished high school i knew what I wanted to do. So I went to college on a full ride and became an RN. I could feel it in my soul that I needed to do that. That it was like…my calling.
I sighed as I put the last of the bags in my truck. I needed to get away but more than anything, I couldn't wait to see my grandmother and ask the questions that she always told me she would give me the answers to ... .when I was older. Ty jumped up in the passenger seat and we drove off. Hoping that my grandmother would be upset with me for just showing up. She was always so particular about that kind of thing. it was something she just would have to get over i guess. fi glanced over at Ty. Sometimes I swear he knew what i was saying or thinking. i smirked at the thought. He was watching out the window happy as could be.
It was almost 10:00 pm when we crossed over into La Push. Ty was standing up as good as he could intently watching the forest as we drove by. His ears perked up and his eyes focused. every now and then he would let out a low growl before panting all over again. That dog, he couldn't wait to go running out here. Looking around, I couldn't blame him. I wanted to explore just as bad.
What I didn't know that Ty did was that there were eyes watching us the whole time, hidden in the trees and following us as we made our way to Gran's house. Fifteen minutes later, I pulled up to that familiar home that i remembered as a kid, and was met with Gran on the porch and the most pissed off face i had seen in a long time. it was like she knew i would be here. How? I wasn't for sure. I got out and smiled at her as Ty jumped out of the truck behind me and we started toward the porch. "Hey, Gran!" i said grinning.
"Emma Dalene", She said mad as hell. "You should not be here, it's not a good time. You should not have came." I stopped and looked at her before shrugging.
"Well i am here now. I'm not leaving". i replied. Gran sighed her angry sigh and shook her head. Off in the distance I heard a wolf howl. My grandmother and Ty looked off in the direction it came.
"Get in the house, now." she spoke urgently. "we will get your stuff in the morning." With that we went in the house and nothing more was said. At least not in that moment. I would ask in the morning when she had her coffee. I know she didn't like visitors last minute and unannounced. i get that. She had never acted that way before though and the way she knew i was going to show up. More questions entered my mind as Ty and i settled into the spare room. i drifted off to sleep as i heard Gran on the phone. "Quill, it's Elaine".
