The wind howled through the towering trees as Liv Taylor stared out at the vast wilderness that surrounded the cabin. It was supposed to be peaceful, a break from the life she had known in the city—a place where she and Will could heal, or at least pretend they were trying to. But the forest, dark and foreboding, didn't feel like a refuge. Instead, it felt like it was closing in on her, trapping her in a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.
The lyrics from Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble (Taylor's Version)" echoed in her mind: "I knew you were trouble when you walked in..." Liv had known, deep down, the moment she met Will that there was something wrong. Something dangerous beneath his charming exterior, the way his smile never quite reached his eyes. But she had ignored it, blinded by her desire to believe in love, in second chances. And now, she was paying the price.
Will's betrayal had shattered something inside her. She hadn't seen it coming, not at first. He had been perfect—the ideal husband, attentive, caring, always knowing exactly what to say to make her feel safe. But that was the problem, wasn't it? It had all been an illusion. The affair, the lies, the manipulation—everything he had done had torn her apart piece by piece. And yet here she was, in the middle of nowhere, trying to fix something that was beyond repair.
Liv wrapped her arms around herself, the chill in the air seeping into her bones. She didn't trust him anymore, couldn't even look at him without feeling the bile rise in her throat. But Will had insisted they needed this trip, that they could work through their problems if they just got away from everything. Liv had agreed, not because she believed him, but because she needed time. Time to figure out what she was going to do.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind her, and Liv tensed. She knew it was Will before he even spoke. His presence had become suffocating in recent weeks, a constant reminder of the man she had fallen for—and the monster he had turned out to be.
"Liv," Will's voice was soft, coaxing, the way it always was when he was trying to get her to open up. "Come inside. It's getting cold."
She didn't turn around. "I'm fine out here."
Will sighed, stepping closer. She could feel his warmth behind her, but instead of comfort, it only made her feel trapped. "We came out here to talk, Liv. To try and fix this."
Fix this. That was rich, coming from him. Liv clenched her jaw, staring out at the horizon. "I'm not sure this is something you can fix, Will."
His silence was telling. He knew she was right, but he wasn't going to admit it. Not yet, anyway.
"Look," Will said, his voice calm but with an edge of frustration, "I know I messed up. I know I hurt you. But I love you, Liv. I made a mistake, but we can move past it. We have to."
Liv turned to face him, her eyes narrowing. "You call cheating on me a mistake? Lying to me for months was a mistake?"
Will's jaw tightened, and she could see the flash of anger in his eyes. He didn't like being challenged, didn't like it when things didn't go his way. That was one of the things Liv had come to realize about him—he thrived on control. And now that he was losing it, he didn't know how to handle it.
"I'm trying, Liv," Will said, his voice strained. "I'm trying to make things right."
Liv laughed bitterly, the sound harsh in the quiet of the forest. "You can't make this right, Will. You can't undo what you did."
Will's face hardened, and for a moment, Liv thought he might lash out. But instead, he stepped back, his hands clenched at his sides. "I know you're angry. You have every right to be. But I'm not giving up on us. Not yet."
Liv stared at him, her heart pounding. She didn't know what scared her more—the fact that Will still believed he could salvage their marriage, or the fact that a part of her still wanted to believe him.
"Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground..." The lyrics played in her mind, a reminder of the moment she had discovered the truth. It had felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her, like she was falling and there was nothing to catch her. She had trusted him, loved him, and he had destroyed her.
"I can't do this," Liv whispered, her voice breaking. "I can't keep pretending like everything's going to be okay."
Will's eyes softened, and for a moment, he looked almost vulnerable. Almost. "I don't want to lose you, Liv."
Liv felt the familiar sting of tears in her eyes, but she blinked them away. She had cried too much over him already. "Maybe you already have."
That night, Liv lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling. The cabin was eerily quiet, the only sound the distant rustling of the trees outside. Will was asleep beside her, his breathing slow and steady, but Liv couldn't shake the unease that had settled in her chest. She felt like she was being watched, like something—or someone—was lurking just beyond the darkness.
She turned onto her side, her gaze falling on Will's sleeping form. He looked so peaceful, so innocent, but Liv knew better. She knew what he was capable of, the lies he could tell with a straight face, the way he could make her doubt her own instincts.
"I knew you were trouble when you walked in..." The lyrics echoed in her mind again, and Liv felt a surge of anger rise within her. She had known, deep down, that something was wrong from the start. She had ignored the red flags, ignored the little voice in her head that had told her to walk away. And now she was paying the price.
Liv slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Will, and padded to the window. She stared out into the darkness, her mind racing. She needed to get out of here, needed to put distance between herself and Will. But where could she go? They were in the middle of nowhere, miles from the nearest town.
A flash of movement caught her eye, and Liv's heart skipped a beat. She leaned closer to the window, her breath fogging up the glass. There—just beyond the treeline—she saw it again. A shadow, moving quickly through the trees.
Her pulse quickened, and she stepped back from the window, her mind racing. Was someone out there? Or was she imagining things?
"Liv?" Will's voice startled her, and she turned to see him sitting up in bed, his eyes groggy but alert. "What are you doing?"
Liv shook her head, her heart still pounding. "I thought I saw something. Outside."
Will frowned, rubbing his eyes. "Probably just a deer or something. You're jumpy."
Liv's jaw clenched. She hated how dismissive he could be, how he always made her feel like she was overreacting. But something about the shadow she had seen didn't feel right.
"I'm going to check it out," Liv said, grabbing a flashlight from the nightstand.
Will groaned, flopping back onto the bed. "It's the middle of the night, Liv. Just go back to sleep."
But Liv couldn't shake the feeling of dread that had settled in her chest. She needed to know what was out there.
Without another word, she slipped out of the cabin and into the cool night air. The forest was still, the only sound the soft rustling of the leaves. Liv clicked on the flashlight and pointed it toward the treeline, her heart racing.
As she approached the trees, the beam of light flickered, and for a moment, she thought the flashlight would go out completely. But then, it steadied, and she took a deep breath, stepping into the woods.
The darkness closed in around her, and Liv's pulse quickened. She scanned the area, searching for any sign of movement, but the forest was eerily silent.
"The saddest fear comes creeping in, that you never loved me, or her, or anyone, or anything..." The lyrics played in her mind, a reminder of the doubts that had been gnawing at her since she had discovered Will's betrayal. Had he ever really loved her? Or had it all been a lie?
A sudden rustling in the bushes made Liv jump, and she whipped the flashlight toward the sound. Her heart pounded in her chest as she took a step closer, her breath coming in shallow gasps.
But there was nothing there. Just the wind, pushing through the trees, playing tricks on her mind.
Liv let out a shaky breath, lowering the flashlight. Maybe Will was right. Maybe she was just being paranoid.
But as she turned to head back to the cabin, a figure stepped out from the shadows.
Liv's heart leapt into her throat, and she stumbled backward, the flashlight slipping from her hand and hitting the ground with a thud. The figure moved closer, and Liv's blood ran cold as she recognized the face.
It was Will.
But how had he gotten out here so quickly? And why was there no sound—no footsteps, no movement—when he had approached?
"Will?" Liv's voice trembled, her mind racing with confusion and fear.
The figure smiled—a cold, chilling smile that sent a shiver down Liv's spine. "You shouldn't have come out here, Liv."
Liv backed away, her heart pounding in her chest. "What are you talking about?"
Will's smile widened, and the darkness seemed to close in around him, swallowing the light from the fallen flashlight. "You never should have come out here."
And in that moment, Liv realized the truth. This wasn't the man she had married. This wasn't the Will she had known. Something had changed—something dark, something dangerous. And now, she was trapped, alone in the wilderness with a man she no longer recognized.
"I knew you were trouble when you walked in..."
Liv turned and ran, the trees closing in around her as she fled deeper into the forest. But no matter how fast she ran, she couldn't escape the feeling that Will was right behind her, his cold, empty smile haunting her every step.
And in the darkness, Liv knew there was no way out.
