Chapter 1: Wild Escape

Itching.

That was the first thing Doom Marine felt inside of his head upon waking up – 'must be that ugly-looking worm' – he thought. Whatever the squid-looking humanoid put in his eye, he'll deal with it later. Now it was the time to get the hell out. The flesh and bone capsule was locked, but maybe he could force his way out of it – punching it might be a good start.

Needless to say, first try was as effective as trying to punch a Cyberdemon in its gut without the berserker power up - like that one time on Deimos when it wore off moments before his fist connected with an indented target. Another one might work...

Still no effect on the 'door', but it started to annoy Marine enough for the vision in his eyes to go red – a bit redder than the room he was in, resulting in his third break free attempt to succeed, causing the capsule door to bend enough for a small gap to appear, giving him the opportunity to carefully slide his fingers trough, firmly get the hold of the edges of a cracked door and rip it open like a long awaited Christmas gift.

When it was all said and done, he stepped out his temporary tomb to realize that he was relocated to some other place while unconscious – he wasn't that quite high off the ground before...

He managed to safely land on some ship-like platform – a corpse of a dead woman nearby, a chest of bones and flesh and a capsule not far ahead from him. He'll check the capsule in a moment – first's the chest - figured there could be something useful for the road ahead.

'something useful' is an understatement – inside of that chest there was some bottle with red liquid and his gear: super shotgun, plasma rifle, chainsaw and a helmet, which was quite damaged after that lucky fireball shot, but still gave some form of protection. Would be foolish to just leave it be, so he got to it. After gearing up and taking with him whatever he could, he went to see a capsule – empty – someone might have gotten out. He noticed an entrance that suspiciously looked like a sphincter. Brow raised and shotgun ready, he went towards the entrance and felt quite bizarre to see for himself that indeed, the door not only looked like one, but it also opened like a sphincter.

Shaking the thought off, he went through, noticing to his right two people laying on some lifted tables and someone else banging on the door from inside the capsule. He rushed, seeing a girl with dark hair and pointy ears – 'an elf?' – Marine thought to himself, believing more and more that he got into some crazy land here.

"You! Get me out of this thing!" the girl yelled in desperation.

Doom Marine observed the capsule for a moment: maybe there's an easier way to get it open rather than punching trough it. He noticed that opening the capsule from the outside should prove to be easy – thanks to all the free space for his footing, he could position himself well enough to yank the door open by forcing the lower part open and then doing the same with the remaining least durable upper part. And that's exactly what he did – with a little struggle, the capsule was opened, letting the trapped girl fall out right on her knees.

"At last... Thought I was done for..."

While she was panting, Doom Marine approached her and offered her a helping hand. She looked up at him – with slight hesitation, she accepted the hand and got up.

"Thought that damn thing was going to be my coffin. Thank Y-" then something in Marine's head made him lurch with the thoughts of an elf girl he saved – he felt that she is grateful, but remains vigilant and above all – wants to survive this whole ordeal.

"Ahh... my head" complained an elf girl. The sensation wasn't exactly a pleasant one for both of them, but Damned Marine felt worst things happen to his head before ending up in this place.

'bet it's the damn worms' – he thought. Elf girl looked up to him:

"That must be the parasites they put in our heads... We can deal with it later, but first, we need to get out of this thing. Let's join up." She offered.

Doomguy contemplated the option at hand: he is fully capable of getting out of here himself, but he isn't about to leave another victim of those things at the mercy of fate – no matter if they can't or can fight. He gave her a nod.

"Right behind you then... I'm Shadowheart."

"...Marine. Let's go." He responded as he was pulling out his shotgun – the now named Shadowheart puzzlingly looked at his weapon, and then he noticed her facial expression change to one of remembrance.

"Just a moment! Forgot something..." he looked as an elf girl went back to her capsule to grab some polygon-shaped ball-like object. Given the things he saw recently, he is willing to bet that it was some messed up version of the Rubik's cube, but he could be wrong – not really his place to care about small things.

"Alright, I'm ready. Let's..." she paused when they both noticed a sphincter open up in the other part of the room – three people stood there: one was a strange armored woman with green skin and odd nose shape, Second was a huge white scaly lizard, wearing a sleeveless robe of sorts. Third was another elf girl with short blonde hair and slightly bigger ears, wearing something that resembled the equipment of forest hunters from middle ages.

"Oh great – more survivors! See? Our chances of getting the hell out of here had gotten quite high now" a elf with short hair cheerfully said to a strange-looking woman with odd nose.

"Fool! They could be thralls for all we know. Prepare yourself!" that said woman then pulled out a sword from her back, giving a reason for the Doom Marine to aim his super shotgun at her.

"We're on the mindflayer's ship flying through hell knows where and about to be taken down by the dragons if we don't take control of this damn thing... And you are trying to start a fight? Typical gith – I am not even surprised." Shadowheart stated aloud, causing a blonde haired elf to raise a brow.

"What's your problem with gith?" blonde elf asked.

"what's my problem with them? More like 'what problems do they have with anyone else, who is not a gith'? She is a dangerous company." Dark haired elf clarified.

"That may be true, but it's exactly what we need when it comes to the upcoming fights – a dangerous company. Plus, by the looks of it, your friend over here is anything, but a gentle type." – Elf Hunter noted – indeed, Marine had a look of someone, who is about to literally shred you to pieces – he even holds a tool for such an act of brutality.

"Fair point... Guess we better stick together for a time being. I'm Shadowheart."

"My name is Tavarra, but you can call me Tav for short." blonde haired elf introduced herself. Then there was a turn for a scaly lizard, who kept quiet the entire time and had a look of… confusion?

"My... my head is quite of a mangled up mess as it is, but you can call me Durge." he said, somewhat hesitant - Perhaps that is not his name at all?

Then again, who he is to judge, given the fact he himself does not remember his own god damn name, nor the names of those, he had lost years ago since they came to Earth?

"…Marine" Dooomguy introduced himself to the rest.

"You can talk! Hiiii!" The now named Tav gasped, then awkwardly waved her hand at the Doom Marine.

"G'lyck, Enough with this chatter. We need to get to the helm – now!" a still nameless woman with a green skin shade interjected with a noticeable hint of annoyance.

"She is right – we need to go" Shadowheart added. What the 'gith' woman and dark haired elf said confirmed Doomguy's suspicion about their current whereabouts – they are on an alien ship of sorts and it's going to crash land sooner or later. The question is where.

Our band of dysfunctional misfits with parasites in their heads decided to go down the corridor that would eventually lead them to helm of this ship.

When they approached another sphincter, gith woman spoke up: "We are nearing the helm. Once inside, do as I say"

Shadowheart seemed to be baffled by the proposition "Who put you in charge? I'll trust my own..."

Marine just had about enough of all the bickering for today: "shut it, you two" the way he interjected terrified them enough to cease all the talking and listen.

"you want a plan?" he asked, checking ammo in his shotgun. As a Space Marine, not only was he trained to be an efficient killer, he was trained to work with a team. He may have forgotten about most of it thanks to being on his own for so long, but it's never late to remember the basics – leading team and forming a plan included.

"here is the plan: me, Shadowheart and a scaly friend over here are going to kill anything that moves and attacks us. Tav will take control of the helm, you, green lady, provide her with cover shall the need arise. Got it?" he looked over everyone in the room, waiting for objections. Surprisingly, even the gith lady seemed on board with the plan. The lizard one – Durge – seemed to actually smile at the proposition.

"Good. MOVING OUT!" He locked his super shotgun and made it through the sphincter. And what does he see?

Demons.

Granted, they don't look like anything he'd ever killed since the day he and his team was sent on Phobos and he ended up being the last one standing there, but the fact remains: there's demons fighting the squid things. And not only that, he is in Hell.

And yet, it does not feel like the one he knows so well, but that does not matter – his Hell or a completely different one, his demons or not – he is going to do the one and only thing he is exceptionally good at...

'kill them all!'

Doom Marine's vision turns red – he rushes towards the puny creature with wings on his left and shreds it to pieces with a blast from his shotgun, then while reloading, dashes towards a winged demon with a fiery sword and manages to kick it in the gut, making it stumble backwards.

Meanwhile, Durge sent a fireball towards an imp on the right, burning it to ash. Shadowheart used a mace to slam at a hell hound, but it retaliated by launching at her. Fortunately, she was able to block the incoming attack just long enough for Durge to stand by her side and slam the creature over its head with a staff, splattering some of the brain matter over his face. He could not suppress the urge to lick it just for a taste.

"You dare? Avernus is ours, intruders!" the demon swung it's sword at the Doom Marine, who was able to swiftly dodge it and lunge at it with a roaring chainsaw in hands. The look in the eyes of that creature was definitely something to behold...

Doomguy was cutting the Hellspawn vertically, teeth tearing trough flesh and bone with a mixture of sickening crunching, roar of the wood-cutting tool repurposed into a diabolical weapon of pain delivery and agonizing screams of the Cambion commander – many present in that moment never ever imagined to even hear such screams from a creature like this – let alone see a mortal man end a literal half demon spawn in the ways many demons and devils would only dream about in their nightmares.

Tav and gith lady almost made their way to the helm, but were intercepted by three hellish creatures – it was good that Doom Marine proposed that they'd go there together, for Laezel was able to protect Tav from the hound that almost took a chunk out of her head by stabbing the creature in its maw, killing it.

'you are no longer required' Doomguy heard a thought in his head...

Squid creature talked to him, while looking at him with malicious intent. Marine, after observing the flaming sword of a fallen devil he just butchered, looked at the squid thing – mindflayer – as if in to understand if it was jesting or not.

Then he blew its fucking brains all over the helm room with his super shotgun. The body stayed afloat for a little while, not yet understanding that the organ responsible for all the life support and motor functions just ceased to exist in a gory display of annoyance with what has been told by that said organ.

As soon as the squid's headless body fell, the sphincter the band of misfits originally came from opened up and revealed two more demons, armed with pitchforks. Doomguy was already in the blood rush from killing their leader – he picked up the flaming sword in his left hand and held a loaded shotgun on his right shoulder. If he didn't had his slightly melted helmet on, they all would have seen a wicked smile plastered on his face.

Tav shot an imp to her left, but the damn thing was pretty fast, so it only scratched the creature while the gith lass was able to slice the one to the right, killing it instantly and then going for the remaining one near the blonde elf.

Shadowheart and Durge looked back to an entrance they came from to notice the Cambions that rushed at them - Cleric of Shar prepared the "inflict wounds" while Dragonborn was ready to shoot "Magic Missles", but before they could do that, Doom Marine intercepted with a slash across the chest of the first Cambion, followed by a shot in the gut of the second one – the force of that devastating weapon was strong enough to sent it on its back, but not quite fatal.

Before the first one could retaliate for receiving a deep wound on its chest, Durge shot his missles at it and Shadowheart delivered a finishing blow with her necrotic spell, permanently putting it down. The remaining Cambion got back on its feet and was able to stab Doom Marine in his leg, causing him to grunt from pain.

'that… was stupid' he started to hack at the puny devil like the area around was a butcher's table and the reaming Cambion was a little piglet sent on the slaughter.

'YOU are stupid!' he finished the hellspawn off with a final drop of the blazing sword down on its head, cutting it in half. Cambion, alive just for a moment, experienced fear ulike any other before its vision disappeared into the void.

While gith helped with finishing off the last imp and Tav rushed towards the helm, Doomguy pulled the pitchfork out of his leg, check how badly it could slow him down and when getting pleased with the result, looked at the duo that assisted him to give 'em thumbs up.

Shadowheart, whose set of skills wasn't focused on purely being a healer, decided to help the Marine however she could – that's the least she could do as a thanks for freeing her from that thing. She kneeled before his wounded leg and casted some healing on it.

Doom Marine tested out his leg again – it still hurt, but his bones felt fine, so that was quite a progress. He looked at her and gave a nod, as a sign of gratitude.

"You're welcome" she returned with a slight smile.

"HOLD ON! IT'S GON' BE A BIT SHAKY!" they heard Tav yell from the location of the helm panel. Marine understood what was coming and grabbed onto the nearest ship's 'pillar' or whatever it was. He motioned to the other two to do the same if they wanted to make it through.

And just as the Marine expected, Ship started to bend a bit – he saw Tav fly towards the wall with quite a loud 'thud' before ship bended again, sending her back towards the helm panel, onto which she was fortunate enough to grab onto, or that would be the sure end of her. Moments later, he noticed that there's actual star-filled skies – not Earth, but something quite similar - that's for sure.

Then something exploded, destroying the pillar he held onto and sending him flying out of a newly formed hole behind – he was hundreds of feet above the ground, free falling.

'The ground makes an unfriendly pillow'

Safety roll isn't an option – he'll need to try something else. He notices ship debris flying not too far awayy from him and some mountains down bellow. If he acts quickly, he could potentially soften the blow and survive with a shit ton of broken bones and some burns.

With some struggle against the gravitational pull, he was able to grab onto a big enough chunk of a ship and climb onto it. Now all he had to do is somehow manage to get closer to the mountains and slide down on them. Again, with some struggle, he managed to do just that...

First came the sharp pain in his knees from landing on a mountain, then he started to feel how his fingers were being shredded against the angular and sharp rock the mountain was made of – he tried to reposition his grip on the debris, noticing in the process that his gloves have been torn apart with the skin and flesh on some of the fingers.

No time to dwell about it: he was rapidly sliding down by the mountains past the damn river into the bloody trees – he lost the grip of the ship's chunk and flew forward towards the trees by the time. After landing on every single branch possible, he hit the ground hard and almost fell into the damn river, but was able to grab onto a ledge and use whatever amount of rage and strength within him to climb up.

Laying on the ground in pain with almost a dozen broken bones, burned off fingers and throat as dry as a nun's ass, he decided to do one thing he probably wouldn't have considered to do had he still remained in Hell…

Close his eyes and just have a little nap – not some forced magic bullshit to knock him out like that mindflayer with his damn worm – an all honest to God, actual nap.

And that he did. As uncomfortable as the ground is, as painful as it all feels to him right now, it's better than what he had in recent...

In recent ever since Phobos...

Aaaand here goes the first chapter. I think there's far too much attention on Doomguy's combat and very little on the side of other main characters, but I may try tweaking it out by adding and/or removing some minimal bits here and there (like the unknown girl in a capsule we could turn into a mindflayer at the press of a button).
