Chapter XII
It was Saturday morning, around ten o' clock, and Bella was awake and in the kitchen. She was eating a bit of breakfast with Charlie, the breakfast being that of scrambled eggs and toast. Usually there would have been bacon, but the smell of bacon grease turned Bella's pregnant stomach, and she had already thrown up twice that morning. As she ate, she couldn't help but think of how her day was going to go. Jacob was going to come over, him having called her the night before to tell her he would be picking her up. She had no idea what it was that he had planned for the day for them, but she was looking forward to it regardless.
Charlie watched his daughter as he ate, noticing how her eyes seemed to dart towards the window and the front door every two minutes. Swallowing a bite of toast, he asked, "Are you hanging out with Jake today?"
Bella blinked at her father for a moment before answering, "Yes, I am. He should be here soon to pick me up."
"Well, you two have fun, then. And try to enjoy time outside, as well. The forecast is supposed to be sunny all day."
"We will."
Just as they finished up breakfast and Bella put their dirty dishes in the sink, the sound of a motorcycle engine was heard outside. Knowing it was Jacob, Bella hurried outside to meet him, Charlie right behind her. Jacob grinned as the brunette seemed to rush over to him, greeting her with a hug from his position on his motorcycle saying, "Hey Bells."
"Hey Jake," Bella replied with a smile.
Charlie walked up to Jacob with a frown on his face before saying, "I thought I spoke to you about that motorcycle and having Bella on it, Jacob."
Jacob gave the man a sheepish shrug replying, "You did, and I wouldn't have used it today, but dad wouldn't let me use the truck. I didn't have any other way to come pick up Bells."
"I'm going to have to speak to your old man, then. Him not allowing you to use his truck and have to travel by motorcycle is not only putting you at risk, but it also putting Bella at risk."
Bella and Jacob shared a look before he motioned for her to climb on the bike behind him. Bella did so, wrapping her arms securely around Jacob's waist as he told promised Charlie he'd bring her back in one piece. Charlie told him that he had better with the threat of his shotgun if he didn't. Jacob simply smiled and nodded before he and Bella bid Charlie 'goodbye' for the day, and Jacob drove away from the Swan house and headed towards La Push.
Chocolate brown eyes looked around at the location that Jacob had brought her to after crossing over the border onto the Reservation. They were at a little cabin that seemed to be one of many in the area, with logs around a stone firepit. It seemed like they were on some campgrounds. Remembering that Jacob had once told her that a lot of campers come to La Push, she turned to him and asked, "Are we camping?"
"Yes, we are," Jacob answered with a grin. "I have an entire day of camping planned for us. I'm going to show you the wonders and enjoyments of outdoors."
Bella didn't think that sounded as nice as Jacob was making it sound. It wasn't that she wasn't open to it, but her natural clumsiness made enjoying things like this hard for her. Giving him an unsure look, she asked, "What kind of enjoyments exactly?"
"The usual ones that one experiences when they're out camping. We're going to be hiking, fishing, foraging, tracking animal prints, roasting and cooking over a fire, and possibly singing campfire songs."
"Jake, you can't sing, let alone carry a tune for your life."
"I know, but it's fun all the same." The sunny smile he gave her after speaking made her smile as well.
Nodding her head, she said, "Sounds like fun, and I'll admit I'm looking forward to this day you have planned."
Jacob smiled brightly at her. "Great! Let's get started!"
Bella had to admit, she was actually having a lot more fun than she thought she was going to. When Jacob had first proposed a day of camping, while sounding nice, she wasn't sure she would like it. However, she had decided to give it a shot and she was glad that she had. The two of them had hiked about, and Jacob had shown her animal prints, what kind of animals they belonged to, and how many were traveling together. Not only that, but also showed her the proper nuts, berries, and mushrooms to forage should she ever have to eat something in the wilderness. They had also fished, catching fish in a nearby river that led to a lake, Jacob showing her how to properly prepare one for eating, and they had eaten fish for lunch after cooking it over a fire.
All in all, Bella was having a really good time, and she wondered why she had never done something like this before. As she thought about it, she supposed that it was perhaps she was with Jacob that she was having such a good time. They were bonding and getting closer to one another, just like they had before Alice had shown back up and the Cullens reentered her life over a month ago. She looked over at Jacob, watching him carve wood with a pocketknife, him singing softly in the Quileute language. She didn't understand him, but it sounded like an old song passed down through generations, and it was very soothing coming from him. His voice wasn't as deep as Billy's, but it held the same steadiness as his father's. He looked relaxed, very much at ease, and she couldn't remember a time he had looked so at peace before phasing.
While listening to him sing, she thought about Charlie's question from a few nights ago. Was she falling for Jacob? She hadn't been able to answer him, instead having bid him 'goodnight' and rushed to her room. Despite this, she did know that she loved Jacob. She really did, there was no lie there, but she apparently had issues conveying that and getting it across. But she's always loved Jacob, but perhaps Charlie had meant if she was falling in love with Jacob. She didn't think she had, unless…unless she already had before Edward returned and turned her world upside down again. But…she hadn't fallen in love with Jacob…had she? Then again, it was possible that had, or was in the process of doing so. And as she watched Jacob continue to carve and sing, she felt her heard pound in her chest a little faster than it had before.
By sunset, Jacob and Bella were headed back to his house, having finished up their little camping excursion at the cabin campsite. They had stored everything they had used in the cabin for the time being, Jacob planning on returning to gather it all. They soon arrived in front of the Black home, Jacob parking the motorcycle and turning it off before they climbed off. Heading inside, they were greeted by Billy, him saying, "Hey, you two. Did you have a good time?"
"It was awesome," Bella answered truthfully. "Although, I'm not sure I'll want to go camping by myself any time soon."
"She's a natural forager, dad," Jacob told him, looking at Bella proudly. He then gave her a teasing smile. "But she absolutely sucks at fishing."
Billy laughed heartily, finding the annoyed look the brunette gave his son to be funny. Calming down, he said, "We can't all be great fisherman, son. Besides, the chief wasn't always as good at fishing as he is now."
Jacob nodded before announcing he was going to take his motorcycle to the garage, telling Bella he would be back to take her home. He soon left the house, leaving his father and friend behind. It was quiet for a moment before Billy turned to Bella saying, "I'd like to talk to you for a moment, Bella. Please sit down."
Bella looked at the man for a moment before nodding and taking a seat on the couch. Giving Billy her undivided attention, she asked, "Yes? What is it?"
"Bella, the reason I want to talk is because I want to know what your intentions are with my son. I won't be able to stand seeing him hurt if you are just toying with his feelings. Seeing how hurt he was after you ran right back to Cullen after what occurred between you two was bad enough."
The brunette looked at him with wide eyes for a moment before blinking, opening her mouth to speak. "I would never do that. Hurt Jacob, I mean. And if I do, it isn't and will never be on purpose. I…I truthfully don't know where Jake and I will go from here. I know I care for him; he's my best friend, Billy. And I also know how he feels about me, that was never really a secret."
"How do you feel about him?"
"I think…I think I might…feel the same way he does, but I'm not for certain. That is something that I still have to figure out."
Billy nodded. "And what about Cullen?"
Bella's expression darkened at the mention of Edward, peaking Billy's interest. "It's over between us. Our relationship is through; we're done."
To say he was surprised was an understatement, but he made sure not to show it on his face. Billy couldn't believe that Bella had broken up with her vampire, and she seemed very serious about it. He wondered what happened to make her make the decision to end their relationship. Even so, he had a feeling the Cullen boy wasn't through with Bella yet, even if she was done with him.
The door to the house opened, Jacob returning from the garage. He asked Bella if she was ready to head home, to which she nodded and stood up. Jacob asked Billy if he could borrow his truck, to which Billy allowed him to, bidding Bella 'goodnight' and to come back soon. Bella smiled and wished Billy 'goodnight' as well before leaving with Jacob and the two of them getting into Billy's truck. And as Jacob drove back to Forks to take her home, Bella couldn't help but think about Billy's words to her. He had questioned her because he was worried about Jacob and his feelings, and she couldn't blame him for that. She had already hurt Jacob enough, and he didn't want her to hurt him anymore. She didn't want to hurt Jacob anymore, because all it did was hurt her too. His pain was her pain, but it wasn't fair to for her to be his pain as well. She still needed to figure out her feelings, but she had no intention of hurting Jacob again. She just hoped she could keep those intentions alive.
She was dreaming, she knew she was. However, that wasn't an issue. She was finally dreaming after what felt like forever of not having any dreams that weren't nightmares. Feeling a weight in her arms, she looked down to see that she was holding a baby. She couldn't tell if the baby was a boy or a girl, but it was so precious. It looked just like Jacob, and as the baby looked up at her, it had her eyes. She was in absolute awe of the infant in her arms, not believing that this little being was hers.
The dream shifted, the scene changing to one where she seemed to be chasing after a child, a little boy. She chased him playfully, the boy giggling and laughing as he did. The child then stopped running from her, and instead ran into her arms, hugging her warmly, lovingly. This was her child, and he loved her so much, she could feel it. As she hugged him in return, a shining bright light drew her attention. The little boy looked to it as well, letting go of her and running towards the light, beckoning her to follow. She did so, being able to make out a tall silhouette walking towards her, its features being hidden by the light it was walking out of. The silhouette's frame was that of a man, that much she could tell. And as she followed the running child, she watched as it jumped into the silhouette's arms, a bright grin on his little face.
Her eyes flew open, Bella waking up from the dream she had just had. That dream, it seemed to surreal. She felt like she was really experiencing that, like she was supposed to experience that. Staring at the ceiling, Bella couldn't help but wonder if the baby and little boy in her dream was what hers and Jacob's baby was going to be and look like. It certainly seemed like it; why else would she have dreamed that?
Touching her stomach, she looked down at it from where she was lying, her hand right over the growing fetus. As she looked at her stomach, she felt her heart begin to warm and it flutter in her chest. It fluttered at the thought of what the baby was going to look like and what it would possibly grow up to be. As these and more thoughts ran through her head, Bella found herself smiling, imagining what life would be like if she brought this innocent little being into the world. It was honestly something that she believed that she would have to wait and see, something that she couldn't miss out on. Rubbing a hand over her flat stomach, Bella couldn't keep the smile off her face as she finally knew what she wanted concerning her baby. Her decision was finally made, and she was glad she finally reached it. She was going to have this baby, and she was going to keep it.
