Chapter 1: Discovery and Recruitment
The day Stacy Hirano's life changed forever started out like any other. She'd swung by her best friend Candace Flynn's house to hang out, catch up on the latest rumors at school, and, of course, hear another tale of Candace's doomed attempts to "bust" her brothers. But what she didn't expect was to stumble upon the one thing Candace herself had never managed to see: the truth about Perry the Platypus.
It happened when Stacy took a shortcut through the Flynn-Fletcher backyard, where Perry's inconspicuous little pet door caught her attention. She watched the teal platypus waddle in, and curiosity got the better of her. Peeking inside, Stacy saw the unthinkable: Perry was stepping into what could only be described as a high-tech secret lair. With a press of his paw, a control panel slid open. Before her eyes, Perry slapped on a fedora, stood on his hind legs, and saluted a large monitor that flashed on with the image of an older man in a uniform.
It was Major Monogram, though Stacy had no idea who he was at the time. She gasped before she could stop herself.
Perry spun around, his eyes narrowing as Stacy tumbled into the lair. The platypus let out an irritated chirr, and she swore he rolled his eyes before pulling out a small tablet. A synthesized voice emanated from it.
"You're not supposed to be here."
"I—uh—uh—okay, I didn't see anything! Well, except for everything I just saw!" Stacy blurted. "But hey, no judgment! You're a secret agent? That's... kind of awesome!"
Perry crossed his arms and gave her a pointed look before typing into his tablet again.
"You can't tell anyone. Not even Candace."
"Got it, Agent P. Mum's the word." Stacy mimed zipping her lips.
She turned to leave, but before she could, the monitor flickered. Major Monogram's voice boomed into the room. "Agent P, what's going on? Who is this?"
Perry winced, turning back to the screen and frantically typing.
"Wait," Stacy interrupted. "Who's this guy? Your boss?"
Major Monogram raised an eyebrow. "I was Agent P's boss, but clearly, we have a security breach. Young lady, who are you?"
"Uh, Stacy Hirano," she said, awkwardly waving. "I'm Candace's best friend. Big fan of not being erased or, like, locked up forever, by the way."
Monogram sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Agent P, you're supposed to keep your identity secret. This is a disaster."
"Hey, whoa, hold on!" Stacy interjected. "This isn't Perry's fault! I just happened to be here at the wrong—or maybe the right—time. But you don't need to erase my memory or whatever it is you do. I can keep a secret."
Major Monogram frowned. "We have protocols for these situations. A civilian cannot simply—"
Stacy cut him off, an idea forming. "Why not let me join you? I mean, come on, you need all the help you can get if your super-agent's secret lair is this easy to stumble into. I'm smart, resourceful, and I've been best friends with Candace Flynn for years. You think this is the weirdest thing I've had to deal with?"
Perry let out a skeptical chirr, but Monogram appeared to consider her words. "The O.W.C.A. is for animals, not humans."
"Well, that sounds a little discriminatory," Stacy said with a smirk. "Besides, you've already got a human in here now. I've seen the lair, I know your agent's identity, and honestly, I'm kind of loving this whole spy thing. Give me a chance."
Monogram rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "The first human agent... it's unorthodox, but perhaps..."
"Come on, you know I'm right," Stacy pressed. "I'll keep Perry's secret, and I'll follow your rules. I'll even start at the bottom if I have to. Just let me help."
Perry chirred again, this time sounding resigned. He typed on his tablet.
"She's persistent. Could be useful."
Monogram sighed. "Very well, Miss Hirano. Against my better judgment, I'll allow it—on a probationary basis. You will undergo training and follow every order Agent P gives you. If you prove yourself, you might earn a permanent spot. But one mistake, and it's memory-wipe city."
"Deal!" Stacy grinned. "This is going to be so cool."
Monogram frowned. "Agent P, show her the ropes. And Miss Hirano? Don't make me regret this."
As the monitor clicked off, Perry handed her a pair of sunglasses with a resigned look. Stacy slipped them on and struck a pose.
"Agent Hirano," she said with a wink. "I like the sound of that."
Perry let out a long sigh. It was going to be a long probationary period.
