We're packed together in the small living room of Billy's house. Jacob and I sit on the couch with Billy rolled up next to Jacob on my left side. Three of the five boys are here also, standing in front of the coffee table. I recognize these faces, the three from the night Jacob was sick. None of us have changed clothes, and Jacob and I are getting the couch wet from our rain on clothes. The only thing keeping me warm, other than Jacob at my side radiating heat, is a towel wrapped around my shoulders.
Billy has been eyeing me the moment we entered the house, not letting go of the sternness even after Jacob explained the situation. I still don't know what this imprinting means, but it's apparent that it is very important for all of them since Billy allowed us to stay and sit.
"Can you tell me what happened to you?" Jacob asks. He doesn't seem to even care that the other three are here now. His eyes are set on me, his lips straight, and his body is slightly turned towards me.
"I already explained. After I escaped the hospital, the doctor was going to have the police question me for the silly-ass story you guys came up with for my injuries," I glance up at the three. They are unmoving even after my comment. "I got jobs here and there, but never made enough money to stay anywhere so I often slept next to trash cans and in jungle gyms. What money I did get I used to buy food and to travel back here."
I pause to assess everyone because I know what I am going to say next will be unbelievable to them. Jacob's right hand holds my left hand and I feel his grip tighten.
"Well….After a short bit something happened," I sigh. "This is going to sound crazy - but I was being stalked by a vampire. He followed me to each city I would end up in…."
"A vampire?" Jacob growls. His eyes dart to Sam. "You took her away and she was chased by a damn vampire!"
Sam raises his hands up in defense. "It's not like we knew she was going to be followed by a vampire."
My breath hitches in my throat as they speak, realizing that they believe me about the vampire. I remember when I told Jacob about my vision in the bathroom - about the monster that killed my mother - he didn't seem like he believed me. But a vampire? No, they believe me on this.
"Continue, what happened?" Sam asks.
I am a little thrown back that Sam is the one to ask me to continue but I nod. "When I reached Seattle, the vampire chased me through the city until I got lost in the alleyways. He said his name was Giovani and that he was sent here to get me for someone. He didn't say who, but he also said that I was a demi-god."
I notice that Billy's eyes widen the slightest from the corner of my eyes. Sam also looks surprised by this new information but he quickly hides the surprise by holding onto an expression of seriousness.
"A demi-god? Yeah, right," the one I remember as Jared says. He rolls his eyes and crosses his arms much like Sam.
"How else would you explain the ability she used on us?" Sam asks, looking at Jared.
Jared's arms fall back to his sides and he shrugs. "She isn't a vampire, but she smells a little like one."
"She was chased by a vampire, obviously she's going to smell like one," Jacob states.
I shake my head. "Another vampire found us and helped me kill Giovani. He was the one that brought me to Forks. He was with Bella," I look Jacob right in the eyes, waiting to see a pained look but his eyes narrow and he grimaces.
"Was his name, Edward?" Jacob asks.
"Yeah. They took me to his house where I was allowed to sleep and eat."
"You trusted that leech?" Asks the other man on Sam's left side. He's bulky, reminding me of Emmett's size but his face hasn't expressed anything but anger since I saw him.
"Shut up, Paul," Jacob glares at him. "I don't like Edward, but he helped her. Now I don't have a choice but to thank him next time we see each other."
"That's not going to happen. They stay in their territory, we stay in ours," Sam orders.
"I am staying at their house. Carlisle is helping me figure out what I am."
Jacob stiffens, looking at me with despair in his eyes. "Don't stay with them. Stay here, like you used to."
"No." Billy says with a final tone.
"What? Why?" Jacob leans over to glare at his father.
"For a couple of reasons; one, we don't know what she is and if she's a threat to the tribe, and second, you imprinted on her. I can't have you two sleeping near each other - I don't want grandkids yet."
Heat covers my face and I feel it roll down my neck. My eyes widen, I turn slightly to Billy. "Grandkids? But we're not together. And I am not a threat."
Jacob's hand tightens again and I look back at him to see his head slightly bowed and his eyes looking at me with a roundness. He looks like a puppy begging for food.
"Or are we?" I ask, now looking down at our connected hands. He's been very close to me since we reconciled by the beach, and he's called me his imprint, whatever that means. "What's an imprint?" I narrow my eyes suspiciously.
"Basically, you're his soulmate," Jared chuckles.
I hear the blood rushing past me ears and the quick pounding of my heart.
"It's much more than that. It's like your very existence for living has been linked to a single person, and that person becomes the only thing that matters," Jacob says, his eyes looking down at our hands.
The air in my lungs leaves in a quick exhale. He's imprinted to me. I am his reason for living. All the time I was away, Jacob was on my mind. I couldn't stop thinking about him, he was my reason for traveling the distance I did, for living the way I did. His very touch sends jitters through my body, even now, I feel the tingle in my fingers and palm, as he holds them. His skin is hot but comfortable. I could fall asleep to this warmth.
"Should we tell her?" Jared asks, looking over at Sam. "Or is it too risky right now?"
"Tell her," Jacob says. Snapping an aggressive glare at the three of them. "She's my imprint, she needs to know."
I look at each and every face in the room, searching for answers, but they all look the same except Jacob. They all look serious with stern expressions on their faces. Whatever it is, it is a deep secret.
Jacob and I have been walking along a trail through the forest for several minutes. We've remained in silence, and I don't know why, but I am finding it hard to start a conversation. I want to ask about what he's keeping from me, but I don't want to ruin the happiness I felt after learning about his feelings for me now.
He wraps his left hand around my right and tugs me off the trail. I follow without hesitation, entrusting him to not get me lost.
"I wasn't lying," he starts. Glancing back at me from over his shoulder. "About me having thoughts about you, dreams, and nightmares. You were always there, in the back of my mind, wondering if you were okay, wondering if you were happy. I thought you gained your memories back and just left to go live your life you had before."
This time, I squeeze his hand, and he smirks a little.
"I thought about you too. All the time. I don't think I would have survived if I didn't stop fighting to get back to you."
He stops and I almost walk into his back. I stop just in time before my face met skin. He turns to me, lifting my hand to his lips where he breathes into my fingers. His lips brush against my skin, sending hot waves throughout my body.
"There is something I need to tell you," he says into my fingers. He's not quite looking at me, his eyes are on my hand. He takes a deep breath and slowly lowers my hand before letting go of it completely. My hand falls to my side and my brows knit together in confusion. "You might run away after I tell you this."
Jacob steps back a few feet and I am about to follow until he lifts his hands to stop me. I bite my bottom lip and stand in place, both hands behind my back as I try to control the feeling of despair I have suddenly. Is he going to leave me? Already? Because of some sort of secret?
"If we are going to be together, which I hope we are, since I can't imagine my world without you now. You need to know this secret. You see, our tribe, the Quileute are said to be descended from wolves," he tilts his head to the side with a pained look on his face. "And whenever vampires come around, a few of us start turning…."
He pauses, his eyes traveling to me but not reaching mine. His breathing is coming in and out fast. Whatever it is, it's making him nervous.
I nod my head and smile softly, to help encourage him to continue, but I don't think he'll even see it. His eyes are stuck at my midsection.
"We turn into wolves."
It feels like something knocked the air out of me. I collect myself as quickly as possible so as not to worry him any further. But I should be shocked or at least afraid, my heart pulsates with slight excitement. It explains something I didn't think of before. Why and how, he imprinted. He's not entirely human - not entirely, like me.
"Turn into wolves?" I ask. "I didn't think about the whole imprinting situation deep enough. I should have suspected something."
"You're not afraid?"
I shake my head and he catches sight of it, because his eyes travel up to my eyes finally. His eyes scream for answers.
"Jake….I've been chased by a vampire and I saw a monster in my vision that far passes the likes of me being afraid of anything else."
He rushes the few steps between us, grabbing my face gently in his hot hands and lifting my face to look up at him.
"I should have believed you back then," his breath brushes across my cheeks. It smells like mints. His eyes are sincere and warm. "I'll never doubt you again."
He lowers his head closer to mine so slowly that I lose my breath, my eyes searching for answers to what he's doing. He gets so close that his lips brush against mine and I follow. Our lips connect and my heart explodes in my chest, our lips move perfectly with one another. My eyes close and I relax into his touch, melting away from the warmth that envelops me.
After a couple of seconds of trying to keep my balance against his hold and touch, he pulls away to breathe. His hands trail down my body to my hands, which he grabs gently.
"So, what kind of wolf do you turn into? One of those from the movies? Or…"
Jacob chuckles and shakes his head. "Normal wolf but gigantic size. I'd show you but I don't have any spare clothes lying around."
"The transformation rips off your clothes?"
"Yep. I would just undress in front of you, but I don't know if you'll want that right now."
I blink and look over his bare chest. He's still wearing the jean shorts that are damp from the rain from earlier and his boots.
"There is one thing I want to talk about," he says, changing the subject.
"What?"
"You staying at the Cullens. I don't like that idea. We're not on good terms."
"From the sounds of it, I don't have a choice. Besides, like I mentioned, Carlisle is helping me figure things out. I need to figure out what and who I am, Jake."
His head falls to the side and he lets out an irritated sigh. "Fine, but I am coming with."
