Chapter Two
My agency had spent the last few weeks prepping for this mission, I was putting supplies away from the crates that littered the floor of the medic tent. This was the first time I had been out in the field since my intern days, which at this point truly felt like a lifetime ago. The main tent itself was large enough to accommodate 10 stretchers to lay patients on and just enough room to work around them. I also was set up in one of the other adjacent tents and given a supervisor role. Which meant I oversaw taking everything out of crate and setting up before anyone else got here. It did not bother me any that I had to wake up extra early, the medic area was far enough away from the proposed battle site I didn't mind.
The drop off had been at the agency and then they transported us over to the site. The car ride was long enough that I took a little nap before we arrived. I had only my small bag in which I had my phone, wallet and keys.
Estelle had sent me a message when she woke up, just a quick 'I'm alive' text that let me know she was up and getting ready to go to work. She had been so excited for me; she knew that I wanted to be in the field instead of always behind a desk. That was the whole reason I was a Pro Hero, to be able to help those in their moment of need. Nevertheless, my work at the hospital was just as important.
"Marigold!" A man with dark hair and red eyes called out to me. I waved back as I recognized the man, Dr. Nota Oshino was a brilliant cardiac surgeon and we had known each other for many years. "I didn't realize they had you coming out to the field too!" He walked over to me and kept to my pace as we approached the tents.
"Well, I should have known they were going to send you here, I don't know why I'm surprised. You do have the best sutures out of all the surgeons on staff." I elbowed him in the side which caused him to laugh. "I am so excited to be here!"
"Me too." He patted my back, "You have been wanting to come out here for so long now! It must be like a dream come true for you."
I nodded and grinned at him, "Yes, it is! Now I am going to help everyone set up the big tent before I go to mine. I'll see you around Nato!" We went our separate ways; he heads to his own private tent I'm sure to arrange his set up to how he liked it. I went directly to the main tent and greeted the few people that had already unloaded some boxes.
I hummed a bright tune as I finished sorting the medical supplies and walked to my tent. I was only at my workstation for a moment before I heard people outside the canvas walls. They belong to the pro heroes that were going to infiltrate today, and I could hear Bakugo distinctly as he walked by. I resisted the urge to peek my head out. Would he react if he saw me here? Probably not. I sneered at myself, trying to recreate Dynamite's signature expression. Time moved quickly once the pros showed up.
The mission moved forward efficiently and soon the sounds of battle reached my ears. I dressed in my tactical gear and made sure my kit was stocked with all my supplies. I was nervous but ready as I stepped out of the tent and started to head towards where the fighting was happening. I was only a mile out when I found the first injured person. I worked methodically, triaged as best I could, there were only so many that I could with and without my quirk. It tugged my heartstrings to not be able to stop and help everyone, but I had to keep going.
I could see Bakugo in his hero gear, he looked roughed up but not in critical condition. He kept his eyes on the enemy down the destroyed street. I watched as he started to get into a position to take off, but at the last second his leg buckled under him. "Something is wrong, I can't get up!" He struggled to stand back up, but his leg would not cooperate. His glare burned as he strained to resume the fight. "I... must keep pushing forward! I have to be the one to end this..."
He tries one more time to push himself back up and he immediately falls back down. "I can't move..."
I glance over to see if the coast is clear and then I sprint to him. "Hey, I am going to get you healed up and back out there, Dynamite. You can still save the day..." I wink at him and speak in a calm tone as I begin to heal his leg. My hands were on his thigh. I could feel the muscles flex as my quirk went to work. I took all the pain I could manage at once. The muscles had been hit by some debris and adrenaline had been the only thing keeping him upright.
"You..." Bakugo hissed the word out on a pained breath. "You shouldn't be out here this close to danger."
I ignored the comment and focused on the other leg; it had sustained some minor damage as well as his arms. I also ignore the tingly feeling that ran up my hands. The moment I took my hands away, he got to his feet. He stared at me, his usual sneer not present on his face, "Get your ass back to safety." Bakugo did not wait for me to move and instead shot off towards the danger and did not give me a second glance.
"You're welcome!" I half shouted under my breath. He was half right; I was way further out than I should be. I wasted no time and started running back to the main camp. I was feeling the aftereffects of my quirk and needed to fall back. I was not lucky because as soon as I turned around the corner I came face-to-face with a low-level lackey. The grin that spread across the man's face made my stomach turn. He grabbed my arm tightly; his grip was strong I knew I wouldn't be able to get free easily. "Let me go!" I yelled at him. My free hand going to my pack to hopefully find something to free myself with.
"I don't think I will." The man leaned in closer, "A medic this far into the battle zone is just collateral damage. No hard feelings." His breath was hot on my cheeks as he reached up towards my neck.
I squeezed my eyes shut as my hand closed around a hypodermic needle and I struggled to uncap it quick enough to try and stab him. However, a loud voice cut through the white noise of the blood rushing to my head.
"Let her go you scum!" Bakugo came flying towards us, explosions flaring behind him. He gave the man no time to respond and snatched him away from me. I could hear the crack of the bone breaking in the man's arm. I let go of the needle I had gripped in my hand. "Leave this Hero alone." The last part was said in a tone of respect, Bakugo nodded at me. He grabbed the screaming man and threw him down the alleyway. "You need to be more careful. I am a great Hero, but I can't defeat bad guys if I must come save you."
"Thank you, Dynamite." I knew he could handle the rest, I just needed to get out of his way. "I will stay out of trouble so you can save the day!" I gave him a tired smile and ran without looking at him again. I made it back to base camp without any more issues.
There was a huge sigh of relief as I spotted the main gray canvas of the medical tents. I ran to the other Pros that had come in for back up, I told them where Bakugo was fighting. They thanked me and raced off to help. There was one in a green suit, and yellow scarf around his neck that I knew to be Deku, Bakugo's main rival. He stopped me with a gentle hand on my shoulder, he waited to speak until I turned to look up at him.
"How was he out there? Is he injured?" The concern was evident on his face, but in a moment, it was gone and was replaced by embarrassment. "I'm sorry! I didn't even stop to ask if you were alright as well. Here let me help you back to the tents, Dr. Radiance!" I wasn't even able to argue before he scooped me up and took me inside. He sat me down in a chair quickly.
"Mr. Deku!" I was also embarrassed, my cheeks turning pink. I didn't realize he knew who I was let alone my hero name. "Dynamite was slightly injured in an earlier fight; I healed him up some so he should be alright for now. Go on and don't worry about me, I'll be alright." I was going to hear about this later judging by the looks I was getting from some of the other medical staff in the tent. "Hurry and help the others defeat the villain Mr. Deku!"
"Right!" He nodded at me before pulling his hood and mask up over his face, covering up all his freckles. "Thank you for all your help!" He shot out of the tent with such force that supplies that were in heavy container went flying, the walls of the tent went fluttering in the wind, and my hair flew out of my face.
I blinked a few times in shock, that was something I had never experienced before. I had heard he was powerful, but this was a shock to experience in person. I jumped up to help the others pick up the supplies that had fallen and help reorganize them. It also wasn't long before other medical staff were quipping about how Deku carried me into the tent, but they were met with my icy glare. Nato had stopped by for a second to check on me as well, my guess is that someone had told him Deku had carried me in the tent, but he too had patients he has to tend to. No one else dared say a thing about it afterwards, to my relief. I dropped off the tray I fixed and huffed out a breath; left the big tent with as much grace as I could muster.
It wasn't long before everyone returned, the villain was defeated and now in police custody. The heroes that could stand were cheering and giving Dynamite praise. I stayed in the back of the crowd and watched just how uncomfortable he was with all the attention. I was startled as he made eye contact with me, his eyes were always so intense it caught me off guard. He stood in the center of the crowd; he had his hand on his hip in a casual gesture. I could see him masking the pain that he was in, brushing it off as the compliments kept coming.
I waved him towards my tent and headed inside. I was unsure if he would even come, after all we weren't on the best of terms. It was to my surprise that a few minutes later he did step into my space.
