Can't wait to update more!

"At ease. Bill and Jack have brought something very intriguing to my attention. They told me about a woman Mountie. They said you had taken the oath." The commissioner said condescendingly.

"Yes, sir. On the day my father retired sir." Elenasaid not believing what was going on but hiding it very well.

"Therefore, I promote Elena Shepherd to the rank of Constable. Have a good day, Mountie." The commissioner walked out of the jail trying his hardest not to smile.

Elena was frozen in her place, "I can't believe what just happened." The official new Mountie was awestruck.

"Why don't we head over to Elizabeth's to tell her the news." Bill said.

"Oh yes, I can't wait to tell Jack." Elena said excitedly.

They walked home in silence. When they arrived, Bill opened the door for her.

"Surprise!" Elizabeth, Frank, Cody, Faith, Carson, Philip, Shane, Jack, Lee and Jesse all shouted.

"We heard someone was going to be instated as a Mountie so we're here to congratulate her." Jack said smiling.

"Well, thank you everybody. I thought something smelled fishy when you asked me to get your jacket. And your jacket wasn't there. Probably because it's under that pillow." Elena lifted the pillow showing the jacket that he had hidden under there but her face showed a wide smile.

"I brought dinner for everybody." Abigail said, lifting several baskets of food from behind a table.

While everybody ate, only Jack noticed how Elena watched and waited upon Alyss Roze. He knew she loved babies but was probably too afraid to show it too much. Several hours later, when everyone had left Elena noticed the baby had gone pale.

"Somethings wrong with Alyss Roze!" She said urgently.

Jack and Elizabeth leaned over the baby, "You're right. I'm going for Carson." He said putting on his coat.

Elizabeth had taken the ailing baby and started to rock her back and forth. Elenahad turned pale at the thought that the very namesake of her sister had the same illness that had killed her sister. Carson came. He examined the baby.

"It's the same thing that killed my baby sister. There's no hope. This illness, there is no cure." He said looking worriedly at Elena.

She was just as pale as the baby. Elena couldn't take it any longer. She jumped up startling everybody and ran out of the house. She ran all the way to the old abandoned mine that Cody had shown her on a walk. No one would think to look for her here. Meanwhile back at the house. Elizabeth was crying.

"Jack, can you look for Elena? I would but I have patients. When her baby sister died, Elena ran off and didn't come back for a week. I had to bribe her to come back." Carson said worriedly.

"I'll bring her back." Jack said, grabbing his coat.

He went look for the new Mountie. However he couldn't find her anywhere and went to the Cafe to see if she was there.

"Cody." He said as he entered the cafe. "Yes, Mountie Jack." Cody said looking up from his homework.

"Do you know anywhere that Elena might hide in?" He asked, looking down at the concerned boy.

"No, well. I did take her to the mine once and she said she liked the solitude there." Cody said.

Jack thanked him and rode to the mine just as it started raining. He made it to the mine as it started to pour. He entered the mine. "Elena!" He called. Nobody answered. "Elena, it's Jack." He tried again. Still nobody answered. "It's not safe here. We need to go." He yelled.

"Then you should go." Elenasaid stepping out of the shadows.

"Not without you." He said, stepping toward her.

"You should go back to Elizabeth." Elena answered.

"I told Carson I'd bring you back." Jack replied.

"Jack, like you said, it's not safe here. You should go before it caves in." Elenaforcefully said.

Then it happened. The entrance to the mine collapsed.

"Come with me. I can get you out." Elena said, leading Jack through the mazes of mines and tunnels.

"How do you know this place so well?" Jack asked.

"I like to explore this place. I know safe tunnels and tunnels that if you speak a word in it would crumble." Elena said, bringing him to a tunnel. Ok, this tunnel is safe. I have another exit there just in case. I am going to lift the rock door thing up and you are going to go through. I won't have time to go through and you can't lift it from the outside. Then go get help." Elena voiced her plan.

"Then you should go first." Jack argued.

"No, I shouldn't. If I left you in here you would get lost and most likely die. I know the mine inside and out." She made her point.

Jack nodded reluctantly. Elena carried out her plan in silence. Jack went for help. Elenaslowly made her way back to the entrance of the tunnel. She started her waiting.

Jack rode to Abigail's Cafe to get Bill and Frank. He sent Cody to get Jesse. "I need your help to get Elena out of the mine." he said urgently.

"What is she doing inside the mine? I examined it yesterday. There's carbon monoxide poison in there." Bill said.

"Then we need to hurry." Frank said. Jesse and Lee had shown up to help and everyone raced to the mine.

When they arrived, they started to clear the entrance. Once they had cleared the entrance, they stopped. Elena was sitting against the wall of the mine. She didn't look up.

"Elena! Are you ok?" Jack said going to her.

"I'm fine. I just have a headache and am really dizzy." She said weakly, trying to get up but fell back down. Jack picked her up and brought her to his horse. Frank and Bill rode on either side of them. When they arrived at Elizabeth's house, Jack carried Elena inside. Elizabeth had tears in her eyes when they entered.

"Elena, Alyss Roze is gone." She said crying.

Elena just buried her face into Jack's chest. Sitting down next to Elizabeth, Jack kept Elena in his arms. "It's going to be ok. Elena, it's going to be ok." Jack softly said.

He sat her down on his other side on the couch. She just sat there, her head on his shoulder.

"Why did God do this?" She asked.

"God just lent Alyss Roze to us. It was time for her to go home." Jack answered her question.

Not answering, she just sat quietly, "Thank you both." She voiced quietly.

"For what?" Jack queried. Elizabeth nodded.

"You two have been like parents to me. Jack, you've helped me in more ways than I can count. And Elizabeth. You gave me a place to stay. A place to call home. You put up with my freakishly crazy habits." Elena smiled.

Jack and Elizabeth were put into a new light. They looked at each other. "Thanks. You've helped me plenty as well. Like saving my life a couple times. But I also saved yours so we're even." Jack laughed.

Then Jack did something strange. He got down on one knee in front of Elizabeth. Elena smiled brightly. She knew what was going on.

"Elizabeth Thatcher, I have loved you the first time I saw you. You are one of two angels in my life. I would like to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you be my wife?" He asked.
