So... while I'd love to try and write about the continuation of what happened after 78, and as some will immediately notice, I skipped over Amaria's Gym following Percival's victory against Titania. For various reasons, I just couldn't manage to write it. Look Amaria is a good character, but I just struggle to write her when she comes along... So I just skipped it because I couldn't make a chapter that I ended up liking. Hate me if you want for me to skip that section, ignore it if you don't care, at the end of the day, I'm skipping it. I've put pretty much the SparkNotes of what happened. Anyway, enjoy.
Chapter 79- Reinforcements
Time: 16:00
Location: Calcenon City
"Back here again are we…" Percival said with a slight sigh, as his Aerodactyl landed on the ground. "Thanks, Aeros."
"Aero! Areo…" Aeros cried both from joy and worry. It has been a very long day for his trainer.
"Yeah… This isn't how I expected things to go…" Percival sighed recollecting the events of a few hours prior.
Having arrived at Fiore Manor to both check on Amaria and battle her… A long story short Percival was almost drowned to death by Amaria but was saved by Titania. In anger, Titania had snapped at talking about how Amaria has left her nothing but scars. With that Titania had said what she needed to say to Amaria, though regretted that it had taken Taka's life to do so. Though even so Percival still had to fight Amaria in a Gym Battle, while successful, Percival didn't like how things ended. But before he left, Julia told him that there was trouble back in Calcenon and to head there ASAP.
This brings to Percival where he was now. Though he was left in confusion as there should be more people that he knew around. But they weren't. Shelly, well last he knew she was up in Ametrine with Heather. Charlotte the Gym Leader of the City was nowhere to be seen. Something could be said for her Oldest Sister Saphira. Cain wasn't present which was quite odd as well he said he'd keep an eye on the kids. Speaking of the only other notable children in a town neither Noel nor Anna was here.
Confused Percival walks to the base of the town finding Two Gym leaders Florina and Hardy inside the building talking to each other. Seeing them deep in the discussion, Percival let himself in.
"Repeat trials remain inadvisable under the current conditions wherein relevant variables are unknown." Florinia described to Hardy, in her usual monotone tone.
"We ain' gonna find out these variables by hangin' out here!" Hardy shouted back annoyed by Florinia's tone. Turning away from Florina Hardy saw Percival by the door. "Yo, Percy! Just the man I wanted to see right now!"
"Well, you two are the only ones I see right now," Percival said as he walked up to the two. "What's going on here?"
"We'll get to that, but listen to this mate!" Hardy said sounding excited, "this bird found out what's up with my city."
"The Aforementioned term continues to be unfit to apply to an individual who bears no resemblance to the avian species," Florinia stated back
"Yeah, yeah, and your bro's not the foremost contender for the Douche of the Year Award." Hardy responded, "Just tell Percy what you found out, aite?"
"Very well," Florina spoke, barely notification of a sigh. "A bidirectional comparison of radio output frequency tracebacks confirms a confounding signal to be emitted by a nearby location. Hypothesis: Target location is the source of the soporific waves affecting Agate City."
"So located the place," Percival noted from Florina's explanation.
"Yeah, and I wanna get in there and rock their worlds once and for all!" Hardy repeated, as he heard he could free his city he wanted to jump on that opportunity as fast as he could.
"Proposed procedure remains haphazardly inefficient." Florinia restated to Hardy yet again. "Previous incidences of individuals exiting the city have resulted in increasingly diminished numbers among the remaining group."
"That's exactly why we gotta roll!" Hardy argued. "I know it's risky, but if we don't bust in there and find them, who will? You agree with me, right, Percy?"
Both Hardy and Florinia were looking at Percival, expecting him to agree with someone. Percival closed his eyes for a second as he thought about how to answer. From what was being discussed Florinia and Hardy both knew that people were disappearing. So, with the discovery of this Meteor Location, it would free the people of Agate from the sleeping spell. But leaving here could mean that Team meteor could take Calcenon City which wasn't good. But from inside his heart, "While I don't agree to go in recklessly, I do agree we need to take out that station."
"I knew you'd get it!" Hardy cheered with a smile.
"Nevertheless, reckless enthusiasm holds—" Florina was going to say that this would only result in previously occurred events. But Percival interrupted.
"What's reckless is leaving Agate as it is, Florinia." Percival countered rationally. "Like Labradorra, Agate is held hostage as well. Continued that the citizens of Agate City are forced to be sleeping, and we have no way of knowing if Team Meteor has been giving any of the citizens in Agate food or water. While yes, leaving this place is risky there were more than just the two of you here. I would like someone to inform me of the situation."
"Sorry, mate—" Hardy apologized scratching his head. He'd been so focused on trying to get his city free he forgot that Percival was out of the loop. "Truth be told, we actually weren't sure if you'd make it back. Since none of the others have... Laura was first. She stormed out and never came back. Then Anna and Noel 'parently snuck off at some point. Shelly flew back in. That girl was lookin' way fiercer than I'd ever seen her. She was pumped to find the others, so Cain went with, and that was the last we saw of 'em. Saphira was next. Went down to the Control Center to see what's what. After a while, Charlotte went to get her. That wasn't long ago, but she should've been back already."
"So then there were two…" Percival sighed as he rubbed the ridges of his nose. Going with two people, maybe that would work. But one person alone couldn't defend Calcenon.
"Well, three with you, mate," Hardy said with a pained grin.
As that was said the door burst open. "I was going to say to make that four. But that's apparently been increased to eight."
"Titania" Percival first saw the redheaded woman, but then saw the other compatriots she had brought with her. "Marie glad to see you haven't left. And Lucille! I hope you're doing well."
"Just fine." Lucille said with a smile, though there was a pain in her eyes, she had been powering through. "But I think—"
"Ari, Kuro?!" Percival exclaimed as he saw his two other half-siblings with Lucille and Marie.
"That can be discussed, later." Titania cut that conversation for later.
"Didn't think we'd be seeing you around here," Hardy commented to his older sister, Titania.
"Well, at least one of you might've preferred I didn't come. Too bad." Titania said indifferently to how the people here felt about her. "So what's the plan?"
"We found out what's up with Agate, so we're gonna roll out there and set it right! But Rini here ain't about it." Hardy gave the short and sweet of what was going on.
"Evacuation of this location implies its forfeit." Florinia reiterated to the group of people. "A regularized division of human resources remains a likely tactic to reduce localized defenses and create opportunity for repossession of the city."
"So they're telling us to walk into a trap?" Lucille picked up on that immediately. "Also, don't we have more than enough people to guard the city here?"
"Yeah, but it also how everyone else who used to be here kept disappearing," Percival informed.
"Various assumptions regarding external variables continue to induce a considerable level of risk." Florinia defined. Meanwhile, Kuro and Ari who weren't used to Florina's way of speaking were confused.
"Hey, Rini. Stop that already." Titania said annoyed.
"To what are you referring?" Florina asked for confirmation.
"This "a considerable level of risk" bullshit. Everything's a risk. It doesn't take a supercomputer to see that sitting around doing nothing makes no sense." Titania said, with affirmed nods from several people there. While Titania just pushed Florinia. "If you're scared, just say that."
Though coming from the response of a person who cut off all emotion. "Personal sentiments and values remain irrelevant with regards to tactical effectiveness."
"Yeah, they are irrelevant. They're also inseparable." Titania responded, "You can keep trying to hide behind rationality, but—" Titania took a break giving her best fake smile. "This just in, breaking news—You're still a real human person. NOT a machine. You're not fooling anyone. Not even yourself." With a sigh muttering to herself. "Especially not yourself." Looking Florina dead in the eye. "On the other hand, if your goal was to remind me just how much I messed up before, then you're doing a wonderful job. Really. A+ Tactics."
"…" Florinia fell silent as Titania said that.
"Uh…" Ari made a noise as the room became uncomfortable.
"Don't ask, right now we're wasting time. I know Hardy's planning on going if we ask him to or not. I don't plan on standing on the sidelines either, anyone else?" Percival asked the group to continue with a plan.
"I'm in." Lucille nodded, then looked at the three siblings she dragged here. "Kuro, Ari, and Marie stay here and make sure Team Meteor doesn't do anything stupid."
"Yes, ma'am!" Marie saluted
"Well, it beats paperwork." Ari stretched her arms.
While Kuro just nodded silently, glancing at Percival. "…"
"Then hurry up and go do it." Titania snapped at the three, time was precious as it was.
"Huh. You're not coming?" Hardy's eyes widened when he heard that from his sister. "I figured you'd be chomping at the bit to go beat out Meteor."
Titania sighed thinking of her behavior earlier that day. "…Yeah, turns out sometimes going in there swords blazing isn't the best strategy either. I think I've made enough mistakes for the time being." Looking at Florina. "There's one now." Looking back at the two boys and girl. "So you three go save Agate. I'll stay here with everyone else and make sure Meteor doesn't try to pull anything. Maybe Florinia and I can do some catching up."
"As pertaining to the disclosure of personal information between individuals, "catching up" likely remains an irrelevant activity," Florinia responded.
"Maybe not." Titania sighed. Though to reiterate the danger. "And if you think you'll end up joining the others in their string of disappearances. Don't. Percival is most of what we've got at this point anyway. So take care of each other or whatever, as if that's something I know anything about."
"Suit yourself, Sis." Hardy nodded to his sister.
"Don't worry we won't go down that easily." Percival reaffirmed, though still having that sinking feeling ever since hearing about this Meteor station.
"Oh, yeah. Titania." Lucille looked at the redhead with a smirk. "About Percival being all we've got, as a Manager of the Reborn League, I'll make you eat those words."
"You're a what now?" Percival tilted his head as this was the first he heard about this.
"…" Titania just rolled her eyes as the trio left the room.
The journey continued. On exiting Calcenon's eastern exit, they had found Charlotte with an unconscious Saphira. Charlotte while making a grim joke, had explained that after chasing after Saphira she had found Saphira collapsed in Calcenon's Power Grid. Where Saphira presumably got her injuries by rampaging against a machine after finding a lock of Laura's hair. With a promise to find and solve this situation Hardy, Lucille and Percival traversed the mountains.
Leading to the events currently as the trio now stood in front of a small shack just north of Agate. Snow was littered about, but there was something strange as glass panels showed a factory below the surface.
"So do you think this is the spot?" Lucille asked her two companions for confirmation.
"Can't say, Hardy, you should know this area better than us. Do you know where we are?" Percival asked the Gym Leader.
"I remember some kind of rumor about an old glass factory north of Agate, but I didn't think much of it," Hardy told them what he knew. "But that thing was supposed to have shut down ages ago. So that makes this capital shady. I'd wager some solid coin that that building's gotta have a way down. How 'bout you? 2k says there's an entrance in there; you gonna say there ain't?"
"Sure." Lucille agreed without care, just needed to do a job.
"Rock on. It's a bet." Hardy nodded. Though they had gone into the building to search for an entrance or at least something to that effect. But come up empty-handed.
As they went back outside to double-check Hardy asked for help move a sheet of metal off of the wall in case it could be something. Though as they heaved the metal sheet down all it revealed was a sign. A sign that read, "DEVON".
"…" Lucille and Percival were both silent as they read the company name. she instantly knew that they were in the right place.
"Mm. I may not have been there for it all, but even I know that's bad news, mate." Hardy sighed, taking out his wallet. "Still ain't an entrance though. I was hopin'. Well, a deal's a deal."
"Thanks." Lucille happily took the 2k from hardy.
"Aite, only one thing left to do then. If we can't find an entrance… well, you know the drill." Hardy said, taking his rocky and gem golem Gigalith out of its Pokeball. "Time to kick some glass! Gigialith, rock their worlds! Earthquake!"
…crack
Though despite the effort none of the glass before their eyes shattered. It was quite odd. "Are you kiddin' me? What the heck is this stuff made of? Gigalith ain' no weakling."
"It could be they prepared for something like this. Regular glass should have shattered…" Percival muttered as he studied the windows.
"Still, I thought I heard something over there. Let's give it a look!" Hardy suggested. Going to a small corner where a small panel of glass was shattered… And a ladder headed down.
while Hardy started to complain about the small bit of glass he broke. Percival jolted feeling someone staring at him, as he turned to look behind him. "!"
"Hm?" Lucille noticed it and turned to see a creature covered in black fur, a white horn on top of its head, standing looking at the two.
"This is definitely a trap…" Percival sighed.
"We gave away any sense of surprise with that Earthquake," Lucille said, despite not stopping Hardy from trying to break the glass.
"Well, we didn't come this far just to stop here." Hardy felt confident. Their numbers were good, the second-place Gym leader in the region and two of the strongest trainers in the region. "Let's do this. I'll go ahead. Careful you don't cut yourself on the glass." This left the trio to dive into the rabbit hole.
Having climbed down the maintenance shaft the trio found that it was an Elevator shaft. With hatch just before them, locked up. Having smashed the lock they jumped down into the Elevator.
"Right… So there are only two floors." Lucille read from the elevator panel, "And this is the second floor."
"Works for me." Hardy smiled. "That's less we had to climb down. So let's find Team Meteor and put an end to whatever they've got going on here!"
There was a crackle as the PA of the Elevator started, a voice familiar to Percival filling the room. "And so they come, like moths to the flame…" the elevator shook as it descended to the lower floor. "...or at least, that's what I would say if that hackneyed phrase weren't so grotesquely misused. Moths are night-loving creatures; there's no reason they should be attracted to light. Indeed, even when they fly near candles, it is not because they desire to be close to the light. On the contrary, the most popular theories suggest that they are, in their own way, fleeing it. All bodies of light have a slight band of darkness around them. Humans can see it too, though we often do not notice. Rather than being drawn to light, the clever beauties try to hide from it in that null band, right under its proverbial nose. It is as ironic as it is tragic that the very act of escaping that which they hate brings them close enough to be destroyed by it. But I suppose that means it suits you perfectly after all," The elevator door slid open as it revealed a boy with black hair with the tips a dark read, a long-sleeved black coat with orange tips, and orange and black pants. His looks have changed, but it was certainly the same person Percival fought in Iolia Valley. "Doesn't it, Percival?"
"Bennett," Percival said in a guarded tone. It certainly hadn't ended well last time they met.
"Oi, I didn't come here for a biology lesson, mate!" Hardy told off the person just entering the elevator.
"That would be ethology, "mate". But that's just as well; I suspect such lessons would be lost on you anyhow." Bennett swiftly dismissed Hardy looking between Lucille and Percival. "You two seem well. I would like to apologize to you two." Percival and Lucille looking at him wearily. "First off, I apologize for the behavior I had shown you both last time we met; that was beyond disgraceful. Neverthless, Percival, please be advised that I have made good on my prior promise. You remember right?"
"Yes, so things are different?" Percival said, guarded. Bennett made that declaration, but Percival took it as a threat. It should be clear as one since Bennett seems to still be with Team Meteor.
"So you do remember. That is at once a source of pain and panacea," Bennett said seemingly relieved. "But I respect your acknowledgment."
"I'm not sure if it was your intention, but I did take that statement as a threat." Percival clarified, that he wouldn't take a threat lightly.
"That's fine." Bennett waved away Percival's concerns. "To be frank, I would really rather all parties involved forget that any of that had ever happened. The thought of it now is gut-wrenching. In any case..." Bennett's eyes narrowed on Percival's pocket. "I see you have the Bracelets, just as Lin said. Impressive."
"You know this tool, Percival?" Hardy looked, somewhat confused by Bennett's problem with Percival.
"No." Bennett cut off any chance to explain. "Percival does not know me. Not even I knew myself back then. And I would appreciate not being called a tool by someone who has only been able to follow the most predictable set of actions."
"…Ariados silk?" Lucille said to Bennett.
"Oh, did you notice?" Bennett asked in surprise. "I didn't know you were an expert in Bug types. As you don't hold a single one."
"As a League Manager, I do have to know Safety for most gym construction." Lucille explained, "Though I didn't expect to see it enacted here. I'm especially curious about how you took your Elite four position. How about a test match?"
"While intimidating and all, I'm afraid I must decline your typically brutish provocation. Unlike you, I've learned not to pick fights I know I can't win. I may now be a member of the Elite Four, but even I know better than to go one against three." Bennett guarded himself. "Especially when the two are a Rock-type specialist, and the golden children themselves. Though it is unfortunate for you to not notice the webbing until now. As with that covering all but a single spot, there's only one entrance an intruding party would use. And with that, we can be sure where any intruders will end up."
"And so what? Just cuz you know we're here doesn't mean you can stop us!" Hardy shouted in response.
"Oh, I'm not here to stop you," Bennett said as he stepped out of the elevator, the doors quickly shutting behind him. "I'm just here to make sure you arrived safely, and to tuck you in. Sweet dreams."
"Hey, what gives?!" Hardy shouted as the door sealed itself. "Get back here and fight!"
"…" Percival flinched as he felt a buzzing in his head. "Frick we have to get out!"
"…" Though it was too late as Lucille had already collapsed to the floor.
"Oh, stuff it. Not agai—"
