Chapter 5: Gold and Silver
Story Start.
A new sun arose over Limgrave.
Gone was Godrick the Grafted, and in Stormveil, a throne stood empty.
It was just yesterday when they stormed the castle, yet it felt like a lifetime ago, so close yet so far; regardless, there he was, the Seventh Hokage, before the empty throne, within the cold stone keep of the castle, alone and in thought.
Much was to be said of Stormveil itself, but his thoughts were elsewhere, or rather, within himself.
"This Great Rune… we can see how it could affect your body and your mind… if used wrongly." Kurama's words were met with agreement amongst his fellow residents.
"Think of it, why did those demigods wage war for years over these shards?" he continued as Naruto remained silent.
"This Elden Ring… 'tis not so different from a chakra fruit from a Shinju if you think about it…" commented Kaguya, and it was there that Naruto finally showed an emotion other than stoic if the raised eyebrows were something to go by.
"Princess Kaguya…" Naruto's voice was filled with a teasing tone, and she noticed it immediately.
"What?"
"You'd know much about it, of course… since, well… you know… ate that fruit." Kaguya uncharacteristically rolled her eyes while the Tailed Beast erupted into laughter.
It was such a long time ago now that they could make fun of what they experienced, and it was a way for them to not fall into despair and ensure that they live for good and do good, especially Kaguya and her ancient history.
After they had calmed themselves, they returned to theorising and speculations, as Kaguya's words held truth in them; hence Naruto spoke, "That tree… the Erdtree, could it be a parasite? Melina said the Elden Ring is the source of the Erdtree, but in itself, the Elden Ring is a concept that represents the laws of this world… this is going to take time to understand."
"As much as we want to think about the background of that tree and the Elden Ring, or even this missing Eternal Queen, why don't we return the discussion prior?" voiced Matatabi, and the others agreed relatively quickly.
"These Great Runes, we can feel that its powers can corrupt, and we saw Godrick just yesterday," she continued as others listened.
"But," Son Goku interjected, "if we could stave off the corrupting influence, we could change how it works. Again, we need more information and probably collect from Great Runes."
"Which means fighting more of these demigods, ahem," commented Naruto while Kaguya turned her eyes toward him.
"Why don't we confer with our guest from beyond the stars? We were sent to this world, and so was him…" Kaguya left it at that as Naruto left his mindscape and found himself back in reality, and indeed, the said guest was by the doors of the keep.
"Lord Seventh," he greeted Naruto with a curt nod, which he returned in kind.
"Holy Father." The honorific that Naruto used evoked a raised eyebrow from the old man by the door and a questioning gaze.
"Ah, I suppose whoever sent you here has sent some visions in my dreams," explained the Hokage while the Stargazer just nodded with acceptance, without any question or retort, which furthered his thought that the old man knew more than he let on because he did not lie.
After settling themselves inside Stormveil's inner keep, his sleep took hold, and visions appeared numerous and confusing, with some exceptions.
"Come," the Stargazer beckoned outside, and Naruto walked out of the door with the old man and found a somewhat surprising sight.
The inner courtyard of Stormveil was devoid of yesterday's chaos or any sign of destruction from times past; instead, it looked pristine and well-tended. The gravestones were adequately arranged, as were the plants and sparsely numbered trees, and there was even a barrier that covered the edges of the two sides of the courtyard, lest someone accidentally fall to their death.
The walls that surrounded the castle were also restored to their former glory; gone were the mottling, the thorny roots and destroyed sections, and in their place, a keep in its prime.
"You've redecorated overnight, I see," commented Naruto as two men walked down the cobblestone path where he and his companions fought Godrick.
"Quite, among other things…" replied Aurelius with a smile, but he turned towards Naruto with a grim look. "But there is one place I've not touched, other than removing hostile forces, of course, until I show it to you."
Naruto stopped walking and faced Aurelius with a question, "What is it?"
"Deep beneath Stormveil, therein lies a dark secret, far sinister than the curse brought by Godrick's grafting…"
It was dark underground; their only source of light was the strange staff that Aurelius held, of which at the head contained a bejewelled cross with three horizontal bars in diminishing order of length as it approached the top, wherein the centre, a lone diamond gave out a bright light. In contrast, the staff's golden body contained strange etchings of three different unknown languages.
"I wanted to bring you down here before the rest of your group wakes, as to avoid any interruptions in what we're about to see," opened Aurelius as they walked past skeletons and thorn-laden walls amidst the tall and narrow underground area.
Naruto walked at a brisk pace until an arm stopped him.
"What is that?" he asked in slight disgust and confusion as the men stared towards some sort of a mutated corpse, partially unearthed as if it came up from the ground.
"An extension," answered Aurelius briefly, to which Naruto immediately asked.
"Of what?"
"Of whom," corrected the Stargazer, and a look from Naruto did not break his façade.
Meanwhile, the Tailed Beasts and Kaguya within him shifted in their places as they felt the presence of whatever this thing was, and it was death, not a natural death that they knew, but something unnatural, and it simply reinforced their thought of how this world was broken.
"Godwyn the Golden… the Golden Prince who, in death, became the Prince of Death; his soul dead, yet his body lives."
"If this is but an extension, where is his actual body?" inquired the Hokage while the Stargazer remained unresponsive momentarily.
"… deep below the Capital, in the roots of the Erdtree, where he was buried."
Naruto remained silent as the two men observed the corpse-like thing in front of them, and it was then that Naruto noticed a stain of blood in one of the root-like tentacles that snaked into the ground.
"Whose blood was that? It looks barely dried," he stated, and Aurelius nodded.
"It is; it came from a man named Rogier after he tampered with this thing yesterday during your rampage through Stormveil," answered the Stargazer.
"And where is he now?"
"Safe; I healed him back to full recovery, and he was lucky to be even alive in the first place since what inflicted him usually resulted in instant death," explained Aurelius as Naruto and his residents went into deep thought amongst themselves, but Naruto pushed it out of his mind temporarily and focused on the present.
"So, I believe you're showing this to me for a reason?"
"Yes, to show you some of the things that this world has, beyond the Elden Ring, the Erdtree or the Greater Will, among other things that you will have to deal with."
Aurelius then held his staff before him with two hands, but before else, he turned to Naruto and said, "This thing is the source of the thorns and roots that marred Stormveil's walls and foundations, but I've already excised those, and only this remains in the castle."
"Does that mean there are other places where extensions of Godwyn are found?" asked Naruto with a raised eyebrow.
"It has been a long time since he died, and you could find his extensions throughout the Lands Between, especially in places and things you'd expect the least," explained Aurelius before he slammed the bottom of his staff, where it had a spear end, to the ground and it shook.
A wave of light was expelled from the staff, and at that first wave, the thorny roots around them vanished slowly, as if burned away by the light, and it was there that they both felt a sense of something active that tried to repel whatever Aurelius did.
But Naruto watched as the invisible presence haplessly fought off the radiant light that Aurelius released from his staff; it weakened by the second, and then, the massive head-like part of the corruption itself started to burn away, slowly at first, but as the Stargazer kept his action, the faster the extension burned out until there was nothing left.
Then came the feeling of sudden calmness, which Naruto did not expect, but welcomed.
"Peace in Stormveil, for now," commented the Stargazer as the staff he held returned to the initial illumination they used to light the way down this place.
"I'll make sure it lasts," uttered Naruto, and it made Aurelius smile with actual joy.
"I know you will, Lord Seventh… I know you will. You may not trust me yet, but you will see that I trust you without question."
News of Godrick's death had reached the Roundtable Hold, courtesy of Nepheli Loux, and she stood before her adoptive father, Sir Gideon Ofnir, as she gave her report to the armoured man. Beneath his helm, Gideon furrowed his eyebrows as he received the information of the one who took down Godrick and how this man did it rather easily.
A mysterious man who appears to be not a Tarnished yet guided by grace has taken a Great Rune for himself and activated it without a Divine Tower, no less. Gideon did not like it at all; this unaccounted stranger rankled his mind, and he knew he needed to learn more, to learn about this man, and maybe, recruit him.
"You've done well to report this, despite your failure to claim the Great Rune," said Gideon; his voice betrayed no emotion, but Nepheli felt the disappointment nonetheless, though she remained steadfast.
"You are dismissed for today."
Nepheli bowed silently and left Gideon's chamber and the man in his thoughts; however, as she made her way towards her place, the voice of her adoptive father rang and called for some of his men, no doubt, to send them towards Naruto's way.
"… eventually, he will come here, and they will meet… but I'm not sure it will be welcoming."
The sun had peaked in the sky, its light shined down the broken land, and in the distance, atop the hill, there was Stormveil, restored beyond its ancient glory. The decrepit and once-ruined walls now stood taller and prouder, their stones glistened in the golden light of the midday sun, and those who were still and not undead or mad were baffled as they remembered the castle's state just yesterday.
"… the hell happened over there?" muttered Naruto's clone as he watched from a hilltop that overlooked Limgrave towards Stormveil.
"What is it, sir?" a woman behind him asked; her voice was soft and light. The clone turned around and remembered the fact that this woman was blind; her blindfolded eyes served as a frank reminder of that fact.
"Stormveil Castle… that didn't look like that yesterday, Irina," replied Naruto, confused as he scratched the back of his head.
"Indeed, while I have seen Stormveil in better shape years ago, I have never seen it in such a wondrous state," said the third person in their little group. "I wonder if Lord Godrick knows of this…"
The clone turned incredulous. "Edgar, you heard some of your soldiers that returned earlier, right? Godrick's dead," he said to the armoured man; his naturally downcast face seemed even more downcast.
"… it's unfathomable to think that would happen; who could have done it…" he muttered.
"We'll see when we get there, come," he said, as he took Irina's hands with his and guided her as they made their way back into the road towards Stormveil Castle. The young woman was still embarrassed by this action, and it was just yesterday that they met, and she was grateful that he saved her and her father, but holding his hands did nothing but send heat to her face.
Their road was long, but their destination lay clearly within their sight, and it was the clone's decision to take their time as they trekked the dangerous roads of Limgrave, and soon enough, they encountered hostile soldiers of Godrick.
With ease, Naruto and Edgar fought against them, and the clone thought those soldiers felt lost, with no lord to guide them as news of Godrick's death spread through his former realm, but he paid no further attention to those thoughts, instead, they now moved quickly as they approached the foot of the Stormhill, because the clone could feel his energy began to wane.
As they approached the Stormgate, the clone saw the old man from yesterday, and he was on a chair by the gate.
"Ah, Lord Seventh," greeted the old man Aurelius, his golden eyes briefly glinting in the sun. "I see you have taken my advice to head to Castle Morne… he's waiting for you in Stormveil."
And there was a plume of smoke, and the old man vanished from his spot.
"Who was that?" asked Edgar, confused as he stared at the empty chair.
"The one that pointed the way towards Irina before I saw her," replied the clone before they began their climb towards the castle at the top of the hill.
Eventually, they reached the entrance to the fortified tunnel that led towards Stormveil's bridge, yet, there was no one there; not a single soldier approached the gated tunnel. In fact, the gate itself was open, so they pushed through and walked in the tunnel.
Torches lit the way as they passed through, and as soon as they exited the tunnel, the clone and Edgar saw for themselves the breathtaking marvel of architecture and engineering that is Stormveil.
"I feel a stark contrast between this transformed Stormveil and the lands that it overlooked," muttered the clone, and Edgar nodded in agreement. Meanwhile, Irina remained silent as the clone guided her steps as they climbed a flight of stairs that led into the main gate of Stormveil.
"Well… this is it, I suppose," he continued as they passed through the open portcullis, and the two men beheld the sight before them.
The darkened and decrepit buildings were gone, and everything was brand new; even the trees and the plants did not look dying, and they felt vibrant and alive. Edgar could not believe how it became like this, but of course, there was more time later to look around, and they headed for the inner keep amidst the silence of the new Stormveil.
"Why gold and silver?" asked Naruto as he watched the Stargazer create a banner with some mysterious magic.
"Sun and moon," replied Aurelius. "The symbols granted to you by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki."
"… how the fuck did he know that?" Shukaku's voice echoed within Naruto's mind, and he agreed with the sentiment of the Tailed Beast.
Kaguya remained unresponsive at the mention of her oldest son's name. Still, she did note what little information she had gathered in her silence, and she wondered how much did the Stargazer knew and how deep his knowledge was on the matters about their home.
The other Tailed Beasts, however, were not silent.
"What does he not know?" questioned Son Goku, and he was not alone in airing that question. But Naruto had ignored them in favour of the old man's work; indeed, it was beautiful. The elaborate work was done before him, and intricate patterns connected the two symbols were something to behold.
"Should we try and test his knowledge of our history?" Saiken noted.
"Maybe."
Soon, it came to completion, and Naruto beheld the work presented to him as his banner in this yet-to-be-mended world.
"I recognise some of these patterns…" muttered Naruto as he traced his fingers on the soft cloth over the patterns he pointed out. "This… is the Uzumaki Clan crest; impressive that you mixed it within the lines."
Aurelius smiled in gratitude; his golden eyes watched the Seventh Hokage study his work, but they were interrupted not a moment later by a clone of Naruto.
"Boss!" greeted the clone with a grin that Naruto did not like. "It's up to you now."
Then it vanished, and once the smoke subsided, Naruto laid eyes on two people, and as his memories from the clone said, this was Irina and Edgar, a daughter and her father. The Hokage palmed his face before he stood straighter and faced the two; of course, he already knew Irina was blind.
"… Irina and Edgar, eh, well met… oh, sorry, we've already met," he greeted with a chuckle while Aurelius shook his head as Irina and Edgar became slightly confused, to which Edgar questioned him.
"How were there… two of you?" confusion marked Edgar's face while his daughter remained quiet, but she too asked the same within her mind.
"There's more than that…" he paused as he measured his following words. "They are my… replicas that I can create and send over to vast areas, and when they vanish, like you just saw, their memories and experiences go back to me."
Edgar raised an eyebrow, impressed at what he had just heard, but said no more as Irina finally opened her mouth. "… my lord, if it pleases you, may we inquire about what happened here?"
"I killed Godrick around the same time my clone rescued you and your father," he replied while the Stargazer returned to his work; and Naruto watched as the man finished the banner; then, he returned his gaze back to Irina and Edgar.
"… so, I took his castle, and thanks to this man here, it has been turned into something better."
Naruto then took into his mind the fact that Irina could not see anything, and he wondered.
"Do it; it would be good for her to be honest with you, besides if our guess is correct, we'll be stuck in this world until the Elden Ring is reforged," requested Matatabi while some of the other tailed beasts hummed in agreement.
"It's not like you haven't restored an eye before," added Saiken while Kaguya closed her eyes and delved into her memories; meanwhile, Naruto stood there for a moment in silence, and then he made his move.
"Irina... I have a gift for you."
Melina stood atop the new ramparts of Stormveil Castle, and she felt the gentle breeze from the sea dance with her auburn hair; below her, the Tree Sentinel stood guard by the middle gate and have seemingly integrated herself into Naruto's service smoothly whilst she only has an accord with him.
Her lone eye then turned towards the Erdtree that ever loomed upon them; its rays of gold shined down the lands like Godrick had said, quietly, it stood there, unbothered by the world's affairs, and she eyed the Royal Capital from afar, her destination, her birthplace.
"A rune for your thoughts?"
She turned to see the man in white as he watched over the vast expanse beyond the Stormhill, onwards to Limgrave and over the horizon, Caelid. He held his staff outwards, and as he tapped the ground with its bottom end, a dim light came from the walls of Stormveil, and before Melina's sight, she saw as banners, pennants, and flags began to adorn the castle, its walls, its battlements, and its towers.
Gold and silver they were, hewn in mystical fabric and strengthened to withstand any storm; they flew high above and danced with the winds, laden with symbols and patterns unknown to her; her lone eye studied them carefully, yet she was unable to decipher anything, except for two things.
"… sun and moon, strange choice," she said as the old man's staff vanished into the ether.
"Not when you understand Naruto's past, which you might, eventually," replied Aurelius as he maintained his gaze towards the horizon. "… should you be able to know him truly, and despite not being a true finger maiden, you must be by his side, always, even after you ascertain your purpose."
The soft breeze picked up as the flags and banners glimmered under the radiant sun; Stormveil had a new image; its splendour was unlike anything the Lands Between had seen since the golden age under Queen Marika, and Melina did not know what to think of it.
Aurelius sensed her feelings and responded to them. "Don't fret, fair maiden, we've long ways to go yet, and none of us is in a hurry for him to be Elden Lord; for now, we have a new Lord of Stormveil to inaugurate. Besides, I'm handing everything to him on a silver platter."
He paused, then took in a breath of fresh air. "Once he is done in Stormveil, that would stop, and I shall be an actual shadow, and that is when you truly take your place, dear Melina… by his side."
Melina watched him as he walked away, down back into the keep, but not before he left one last word. "Send word to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear; let them know that a new lord arises; the Lord of Gold and Silver has come."
