Trigger warning specifically for Doust: Man, I am so sorry for what you're about to read. When you told me that this was a specific fear of yours, I'd already come up with the idea for this chapter, and I was sitting there thinking "Shit, Doust is gonna HATE this one."

Everyone else, enjoy!

"…Alright, team, remember your briefing," One informed them. "We breach in sixty."

Rain followed her team down into Looking Glass House. She smashed through the window, tackled and handcuffed Addison, then pulled off her gasmask and stood beside One as he interrogated Alice.

Alice looked her way for the first time that loop.

No wink. Not even the hint of a wink. Not even so much as a single eyelash moved unexpectedly.

Another sandcastle, washed out to sea. Rain found herself sitting down, imagining the tide rolling out.

"Back on your feet, soldier," One ordered. When Rain didn't respond, he crouched down to her at eye level. "That wasn't a politely worded request, Ocampo. This is a mission, not naptime at preschool. On your feet."

Rain didn't blink. She didn't blink some more.

One realized something was wrong with his sharpshooter. "Medic, get in here," he spoke into the radio. "Ocampo is having some kind of episode."

Olga came in and tried quizzing Rain about her state, but Rain was unresponsive. "I don't know what happened, sir," she said to One. "If it was the defense system, we all would have been affected. I think… I think something inside of her just turned itself off."

One was torn between concern for his teammate and duty to the mission. "Alright, administer her a sedative. We'll collect her on our way out." Rain's unfocused eyes could barely discern Alice lingering in the background, watching with worry. Then the needle plunged into her neck, and she knew no more.

"Alright, Miss Ocampo, how are you feeling today?" asked the cheerful doctor. It was the same dipshit who'd 'treated' her way back when, when she'd started to realize the hell she was trapped in and screamed until Olga had sedated her right there on the helicopter. She'd once more awoken here in the barracks' clinic, in a cell that locked from the outside.

"Hmm, tight-lipped again, are we?" the doctor observed, noting her silence. "All our tests indicate that you're fine. No unusual brain activity. No pesky little viruses or bacteria. Brain waves are normal. Your employer looks very unkindly on this kind of thing, you know — this slacking."

A very dim, distant part of Rain, the part of her still capable of giving a shit, wanted to spring forth and wring this little shit's neck. But… they'd secured her to her bed. A part of being so crushed by your despair that you no longer acknowledged the outside world meant losing control of your bathroom functions, and the orderlies had decided to strap her down to her bed as uncomfortably as possible as punishment for that. They'd outright said this as they did so, figuring she was just a vegetable so fuck it.

"Mr. Olivera, one of our rising stars in UBCS, wanted to know if you'd shown any signs of recovery yet. Apparently his team has been assigned some important work in Raccoon City this evening — they're having some spot of bother in town, some kind of civil unrest — and he was hoping that you'd be able to supplement his squad." Rain didn't answer. "No? A pity." He leaned over and adjusted the sedative release drip on her IV bag. "We'll talk more later, Miss Ocampo."

Rain was awoken by bright, bright light flooding into the window for a few brief moments. The barracks were far enough away that they shouldn't be hit by the blast directly, but close enough that the flash was visible. A few minutes later the earth rumbled beneath her and the window rattled from the faint effects of a far-off blast wave.

The sedative once more took her off to dreamland.

"Ocampo? Hey, Ocampo, you in there?"

Rain's eyes opened and saw Carlos standing over her. "Good, you're awake," he said. "Me and my new friends snuck in here — they've abandoned the barracks for now — to steal some uniforms, hack some security clearances… you wanna come with? I saw what happened to Sanitation while nosing around on the computer, and I figure you'd be interested in a change of careers…" He trailed off upon noticing how unfocused Rain was.

LJ poked his head into the room. "Shit, Carlos, that girl's braindead or something! I'm gettin' real fuckin' nervous about staying here longer than we have to!"

Carlos frowned. "Alright, LJ, I'll be just a minute." He turned back to Rain. "I guess you're not gonna snap out of this, huh?" he said with a sad smile. "Sorry, Rain. Hey, if you do start talking again, try not to rat us out, huh?" He gave her a small smile, readjusted her sedative drip, and was out of the room.

The doctor came back. The drip had been empty for a while, and Rain was ravenously hungry, desperately thirsty, and her room stank beyond belief.

"Ah, Miss Ocampo, I'm dreadfully sorry we missed you on the pullout, but once we were sure the fallout from the nuclear plant wasn't going to head our way, I lobbied hard to come back and check on you!" He gave her a pleasant grin. "Are you willing to be more cooperative now?" he asked.

Rain was silent and unmoving.

The doctor sagged a little in disappointment. "Ah well," he said with some small amount of regret. "We're still settling in, so I expect it'll be a while before I can send someone in to attend to you. I hope that's not a problem?" He gave her a sly little smile. "Please let me know if it is."

Joke's on you, doc, Rain thought, in that dim, distant part of herself that was still aware. I'm living through a more hellish torture than anything your simpering ass could brew up in a million years.

XXX

The screams started a week or two later. (Rain didn't really bother to track the passage of time). There was an extended amount of gunfire, then eventually the bullets ran out and there were just screams.

The doctor once more entered the room. He was missing half his face and his intestines were spilling out of his belly. He fell on Rain and began greedily gnawing on her upper arm, quickly managing to nick an artery. Blood gushed out and managed to splatter the window.

Rain died.

Rain awoke a short time later.

Her zombified corpse was mildly chafing at the restraints, but as there seemed to be no living flesh in the area it wasn't enthusiastic about it. She saw no need to seize control; in fact, this was how she'd been living this loop so far, and saw no need to change course now.

The doctor stared down at her, its meal having mysteriously been replaced with another zombie, and staggered out of the room.

The sun rose. The sun set. The sun rose. The sun set.

XXX

Snow built up on the outside of the window.

XXX

The snow melted.

XXX

The sun rose. The sun set.

XXX

Rain's window exploded inward, a rock hitting the opposite wall and falling to the ground. There were cheers from outside, probably a dumbass pack of teenagers or something. Guess those still existed, even in the postapocalypse. There were more sounds of breaking glass as they pitched rocks through more and more windows.

Rain's corpse began to pull against the restraints, knowing fresh meat was nearby.

She heard screaming abruptly come from the broken window. "NO! DON'T LEAVE ME HERE! PLEASE!" begged the voice. Apparently shithead's friends abandoned him when he got tackled by a zombie. The screams tapered off after a few minutes.

Rain's corpse again settled down.

XXX

Rain felt the rain on her face as the storm whipped against the building.

XXX

The air grew a little colder. But after a while, it got warm again. No snow this winter.

XXX

The air smelled a little stale. Like sand and ash.

XXX

It was hot and dry all the time now. Rain had completely lost track of the days, but wasn't it supposed to be winter now? She imagined if Umbrella had indeed set fire to the world, then any surviving global warming alarmists were probably feeling pretty damn satisfied with themselves.

XXX

One of her arms was free of the restraints.

Over the… years? …the skin and flesh had chafed away beneath the restraint, and with only some weakening muscle and sinew to hold it in place, her upper arm had pulled completely free from her lower one at the elbow.

Oh well.

XXX

A bird landed on the window. Rain's corpse reached for it with her stump. The bird flew off.

XXX

Rain wondered, in that deep down part of herself that still had any care, how long a zombie would last before it deteriorated to the point of a second 'death'. How long had she been here? Two years? Three? Five?

XXX

From somewhere deep in the building, she heard noise. Her corpse turned with interest towards the doorway, which had stood empty for God knows how long.

More noise. Objects being moved around. Survivors looking for supplies, maybe. Sounded more purposeful than what a zombie was capable of.

A figure appeared in the doorway and Rain's corpse snarled and ineffectually lunged at it with its stump. He raised a gun out of shock, but then stopped when he saw Rain was in restraints.

"What is it, my love?" A redheaded woman in a jacket shaded a darker red than her hair joined him in the doorway.

"Just a zombie, tied up here for God knows how long," he replied.

The redhead shot a piteous look Rain's way, before giving him a quick kiss and leaving to continue the ransacking.

The man watched her for a moment longer, contemplating whether or not he should put Rain out of her misery.

"Hey, Doc, come on!" another voice came from the next room.

Doc turned and started to leave.

Rain wasn't entirely sure what impulse seized her to do so, but she abruptly took control of her body. "Hey Doc," she rasped out.

Doc turned to her, startled and horrified. "W-what?" he stuttered out.

"I FUCKED YOUR MOTHER!" Rain sneered, cackling like the sound of paper being torn.

Doc screamed as he aimed his pistol and emptied it into Rain's face.

XXX

"…Alright, team, remember your —" One began.

Rain interrupted him with a great big belly laugh, drawing the eyes of Sanitation as she clutched her sides in a futile attempt to contain her mirth.

"Care to share what you think is so damn funny, Ocampo?" One demanded.

Rain composed herself. "Yessir," she answered. "There… there was this guy, Doc, see… and I fucked his mother!" She once again devolved into paroxysms of laughter.

"Ocampo, I think you need a fucking vacation," Warner said, a little perturbed.

Rain thought about it. "Actually, that sounds like a great fucking idea, Warner." She gave him an extremely happy, extremely unsettling grin, causing him to flinch away from her. She rappelled down the cable before anyone else had a chance to say anything, smashed through the window, ran past a befuddled-looking Alice and Addison, and once more swiped the sports car.

One had an extremely foul attitude towards Warner for the rest of the night, up until they both got sliced to pieces.

Hey, here's a fun fact about Doc: Rain fucked his mother! Hahahahaahaha!

Here's a real fun fact: There's like half a dozen or so time loop stories on AO3 titled Be Kind, Rewind. A big shout out to my fellow clever title employers!
