Chapter 4: The alpha .

Bella laid her head on her lovers chest, tracing his scars and listening to the sounds of his heartbeat.

It was soothing but one thing still bothered her, she had no clue who he was or his name.

It would be nice to have a name to call out during their moments of passion.

But she also admitted it added a layer of passion because he was a stranger. She had no idea who he was, where he was from or what he did. She didn't even know how he found her. It was strange, she had been way out in the woods, left by her vampire boyfriend. And why had he taken her to a what felt like a cave at the time.

It was all so strange.

"Can you tell me your name?" she asked as she burrowed further into his chest.

"… yours." He simply rumbled.

"Yes, I get that but what's your name? you know like… john? Greg? something like that."

Her stranger stayed silent and when she looked at him, she noticed he seemed to be fighting. Like he couldn't process her question.

"It's ok. you don't have to tell me. im sure it's… difficult…" she said as she traced another scar.

From the look and feel of them, it seemed they were old and jagged.

She wondered what animal could possibly have done this and how long he had suffered before the pain went away. Even thinking about him in pain, made her flinch.

This man was strange, but she trusted him completely.

"… S… a… m." her stranger suddenly said slowly.

"Im sorry?" she asked

"s… a… m." he said again.

"Sam? That's your name. its… Sam." As she said it Bella felt a spark. Like lighting but instead of pain, she felt… pleasure. And that pleasure seemed to push her closer to this man who name she now knew was Sam.

And then just like before, a vision of a black wolf with yellow eyes flashed its' way through her brain.

"Sam? Did you… feel what I felt just now, something like… electricity?" she asked Instead of a verbal answer, Sam let out a purr that vibrated in his chest.

Bella laughed.

"I'll take that as a yes. You're a strange man Sam. This… connection we have… its…. strange and yet… I like it. Love it even, and… well, I've been around supernatural creatures sam. Well, a supernatural creature and… just from my experience I think you are as well. Every time were together, im always seeing wolves. Or a wolf. Its huge, and black. Is that… supposed to mean something?"

Instead of answering her, Sam gently sat them up and left the bed.

"Wait? Did I say something wrong? Sam?" she called.

However, Sam ignored her as he looked around the room.

His face scrunched up as he looked around and then he shook his head.

He then walked out of her room, gesturing for her to follow.

Bella did and shivered as the air touched her naked body. She didn't realize how hot Sam was. With him, she almost never needed a blanket.

"Sam?" she called as she followed him into her living room.

As she tried to come closer he shook his head and motioned for her to step back.

Within seconds, her stranger, who she know knew was named Sam, exploded into a giant, black wolf.

Meanwhile, as Bella was getting a revelation, her father was getting one of his own.

Charlie swan stood terrified as the cold, pale, red eyed man held him by the throat.

"You smell like the girl…" the creature roared. "you're not her, but I guess you'll do!"

Charlie was frozen in fear as the creature lunged for his neck.

He had no idea how he had ended up in this situation. He was simply following up on the reports of some bear sightings. He and his deputy had gone out, but they hadn't found anything. After an hour or two, he had sent his deputy to the cruiser while he checked around one last time.

But it was then he heard the crack of a twig. He had grabbed his gun, ready for a bear but instead a man with dreadlocks and redeyes stepped out.

Charlie had tried to talk to the man, but it was no use. The man sped toward him in a blinding speed and had him by the throat.

And just when he thought he was dead, a very loud and ferocious growl vibrated through the air.

The freak that had him, froze. His head turning towards the forest behind him.

"I… don't believe it…" he gasped.

Charlie was confused. What was this freak seeing?

However, he got his answer when prowling out of the trees was a group of wolves.

Huge wolves.

There had to be about seven of them.

Charlie was shaken out of his shock, as the freak dropped him unto the cold ground and the wolves shot past him.

But one stayed behind. It slowly came upon and sniffed. Once it did, it seemed as if it nodded to itself and left.

Charlie didn't speak, didn't breath. All he knew was that wolves had just went after some pale freak that had him captive.

"What the heck was that?" he questioned out loud.

Charlie shook his head. He needed to get out of here. When his deputy asked him if everything was ok, he simply shook his head.

He couldn't explain it even if he wanted to.

On the way home, Charlie mind began to replay the situation.

Strange thing number one, the man who threated him said some very disturbing things.

He told him he smelled like the girl but that he would do.

And then there was his appearance. Red eyes, cold skin… too fast for the human eyes.

It almost sounded like something out of his wife's tribal legends Strange thing number two, the wolves, he had never seen wolves so b-As soon as the thought hit him, Charlie hit the brakes.

Wolves. Cold ones. Red eyes .

"Oh. My. God."

With urgency, Charlie put on his lights and sped towards the reservation but instead of going home, he pulled up to his secondbest friends house. The guy was more like a brother but that didn't matter right now.

If anyone could tell him the truth it would be this man.

Not bothering to knock, Charlie walked in.

"QUIL!? SENIOR?!" he shouted into the empty living room

There was a thud from upstairs and then footsteps running down the stairs.

Appearing before him, disheveled and only wearing a towel was Quill senior. He came from a long line of quills, including his father and son.

"Charlie? What the heck is going on? Is it Bella? Is she ok?!" he asked urgently If it hadn't been such a tense moment, Charlie would have chuckled. Senior had a soft spot for his firstborn. And the days she had been missing he was just as panicked. Almost as if it had been his own daughter.

"I have a question."

Quill's brows furrowed.

"a question? Man, why didn't you just call me? I was in the middle of railing joy. I almost blew her back out before you interrupted us." He complained.

Charlie however shook his head. After decades of friendship, he didn't feel bad at all for interrupting his friend.

He could lose count of how many times quill had interrupted he and sue over the stupidest stuff.

"No, man this is serious. And I need you to tell me the truth." He urged.

By now, quill face had turned serious. From the tone that he was speaking in he had caught his friends attention.

"Ok, what is it char?"

Taking a deep breath, Charlie told him. "Quill, just how real are the tribal legends…"

For as dark as he was his best friend paled.

"What do you mean Charlie? Why are you asking?"

"don't play games with me quill, I trust you and I know you will tell me the truth. I've heard the legends just as much as you had, and I never batted an eyelid but guess what happened to me! I was in the woods, looking for bears! But instead of bears! I come across what your legends call cold ones! It had me by neck about to kill me! but then lo and behold! here comes seven wolves! Chasing the creature away! So, I'll ask you again! Just how real are the tribal legends!"

Quill stared at him in shock and suddenly grabbed him by the shoulders, pulling his collar down.

"Quill! What the heck are you doing?"

"Just shut up for a second Charlie. I just have to check."

There was a moment of silence as his friend examined him and after a moment, he sighed.

"Alright Charlie. I'll tell you everything you want to know but, I must call the elders first. Billy included. Why didn't you just go to him first?" quill questioned as he motioned for him to sit down and handed him a beer.

"Because I knew he'd take me around the wringer. Billy is our best friend but… he's never been honest when we needed it."

Quill sighed.

"He has a tough job Charlie. He's the chief and he has a set of rules he must follow. But I get it."

Charlie snorted.

"And you're the tribes' medicine man but you've never lied to me."

"But I have lied to you Charlie… there have been some things I just couldn't tell you." quill said seriously.

"But that's the thing! You will tell me when you cant tell me! Billy would just guide me in circles and play dumb!" "Maybe he thought he was protecting you."

"From what!" he bellowed

"From the exact creature you met today…"

Sue clearwater swan held her breath as her husbands face went from red to purple.

She couldn't believe he was finally in on the secret, and it made it worse that he almost died doing it.

She had no idea how he was going to take all of this. He was going to hate her.

She jumped when she felt his hand reach out to grab hers.

"Charlie?" she questioned as she looked at him. Instead of the hate she thought she'd see, his eyes only held sadness and just a touch of anger.

"So let me get this straight. For the past five years, our kids and the others have been shapeshifting into wolves because of the presence of vampires, which is what I encountered today. The kids job is to protect the reservation from them, and they do that by ripping the vampires body to pieces and throwing them in a fire. But to make it worse, your telling me that the Cullen's were vampires as well, which also triggered the shift five years ago even though you all thought it would never happen "

"that's… correct." Billy said.

Sue looked between the two tensely. To her dismay Charlie and Billy had been at odds for some years. Truthfully, it started when Bella started dating the Cullen boy. Billy tried to persuade Charlie to have them break up, but Charlie refused. He didn't like the boy, but he did treat his daughter right and that's all he could ask for. But now, now her husband was finally seeing why his best friend was so persistent in shutting out the Cullen's.

"so, what you all are telling me is that my daughter has dated a vampire for five years? And not one of you thought to tell me?

what… if he tried to kill her? What if… what if.- I could have saved her. Whatever the heck he did to her weeks back could have been prevented!" he shouted as he finally stood up.

"She made her choice Charlie!" Billy shouted back at him.

Sue winched. Wrong choice of words.

Before her husband or friend could yell at each other again sue interrupted .

"First of all, shouting is not necessary. Second, Bella was sixteen and naïve when she met the Cullen's. She would have never believed us. I think it would have sprung her into their arms even more if we had tried to separate them. She was just a child." She hissed at Billy.

"All of them were. Jacob, Paul, Jared, embry, quill, Seth, and Leah. All of them were children thrown into a supernatural world. And I doubt the Cullen's were thinking about us. Cold ones are selfish creatures that told us that themselves. But that's not the point. The point is Charlie knows. He should have known a long time ago, but we can't change that. The question is what now?"

Sue looked around at the council. The council she was apart of. There was Billy black, there chief in technical terms, quill senior, old quill (quill seniors father), Joshua Uley and herself.

"How is Bella?" old quill suddenly asked.

Immediately all eyes turned to her and Charlie. The latter sighed as he squeezed her hand.

"she's… faking it…" her husband finally admitted.

"What does that mean?" Billy asked

"He means she's downplaying the hurt" quill said before Charlie could explain. "She calls us and pretends she's fine but she's not."

"that's exactly what she's doing. The day after we found her, she was having these nightmares and she wasn't eating. The following week, she stayed in bed. Barley eating and when she slept, she screamed as if someone was murdering her. The next morning, we woke up to find her gone. She went back to her apartment in Seattle. We've tried to convince her to come back down but she won't. I did some investigating the days after. I just thought it was too weird that three days after the Cullen's leave, my daughter turns up naked and with a broken arm. Had a friend of mine hack into all the hospitals in Washington. Took a few days but he found Bella's file. Says she was admitted to Portland hospital for a shattered arm and dislocated shoulder. I didn't want to believe at the time but now that I know what I know. I believe that demon kid hurt her, and his demon family tried to cover it up. So, what do they do they run."

The council took a collective sigh.

"The vampire that had you, did he seem familiar?" Billy asked "Nope.

Never seen em a day in my life." Just glad the kids got there in time.

So… all of them are a pack of wolves? Is Jacob there leader?"

"no."

"yes ."

Sue rolled her eyes as Billy and Joshua spoke at the same time. Not wanting another argument, she gave her husband the answers he wanted.

"Jacob is the deputy… he just… following orders." She said vaguely. "ok, so whose g iving the orders" he asked Dead silence.

After a while, it was quill who chose to answer.

"The alpha ."

"And he or she is?"

"He is-"

" its my son. Samuel Uley." Joshua admitted.

Charlie's eyes bugged out of his head.

"but… I thought he was de-"

Her husband stopped himself as the dots began to connect.

When Sam was a baby Allison and Joshua had divorced and Allison took Sam leaving Joshua all alone.

Years later at the age of thirty, Samuel came back to reconnect with his father however he never got the chance because on the way, Sam had supposedly been attacked by an animal.

But it wasn't an animal. It had been a vampire. And Sam not knowing anything about his heritage, had been mauled and in the middle of his mauling he phased, tearing the vampire apart.

But because he had no idea what was going on or why, he lost his mind and went completely wolf.

No one had seen or heard from him since and the only reason they knew he was still alive was because of Jacob.

Apparently, once the Cullen's showed up Jacob had been the second to phase, Sam still in wolf form helped him through it.

The odd thing was, Jacob mentioned that Sam never spoke to him. It was all instinct. And Jacob couldn't see in Sam's mind either. The only thing he ever got was how Sam became a wolf That was it. Matter a fact, they never saw Sam's human form, they only saw his wolf and even that was a very rare occurrence.

As soon as sue explained all this Charlie shook his head.

"So, your telling me that Sam is the alpha, but no one has ever met him, and the kids have never met him either?"

"Precisely. They've only met him in wolf form and apparently, he doesn't speak, it's just… instinct. "Quill answered Charlie shook his head. Sue could tell it was all so much to take in.

"How about we stop for tonight?" sue questioned.

The council agreed but before they left, old quill spoke.

"How about we have a bonfire this weekend. That way, Charlie can be introduced to the pack properly?"

"That's fine." Billy said tersely

"And Bella?" quill, sue and Charlie said at once.

Billy sighed.

"Bring her too if you can get her down here. Maybe knowing there's more than just vampires will help her." "Or make it worse." Joshua murmured.

No one responded.

But one thing sue noticed was the emotion in Joshua's eyes. His son had been taken from not just once but twice. He hadn't seen him since he was baby. And yet, here he was probably lurking somewhere in the woods, out of his mind. Lost to the wolf.

Bella fell to her knees as Sam stood too his full height and walked towards her.

"I was right…" she said somewhat proud.

Sam didn't answer, he simply pressed a wet nose into her neck, and then… between her legs .

"Sam!" she yelped as she pulled back.

However, it seemed Sam or wolf Sam didn't care, he just continued to sniff and lick any part of her he could reach.

But then… he suddenly stopped, his giant head, resting on her stomach.

Bella took the moment, to run her fingers through his fur.

"… how long have you been alone Sam?"

Her lover didn't answer, he just released a content sigh.

For now, she would take it.
