Chapter One: Opening Moves
Gossip Girl Voiceover:
"Welcome back, darlings. Year Two at Advanced Nurturing High School has officially begun, and the stakes are higher than ever. The classes are hungry for victory, and everyone has something to prove. But in a school full of snakes, only the deadliest survive. Spotted: two predators circling the board. Let the games begin. XOXO."
Setting:
The announcement for the Year Two Unified Trial echoes across the auditorium. The air is heavy with tension as every student stares at the screen, waiting to hear the rules of the game.
On the stage stands Chabashira-sensei, her voice as cold and calculated as ever.
"For the first trial of the year, each class will select a representative. This individual will compete in a multi-tiered strategy game, designed to test intellect, negotiation, and… persuasion."
A murmur spreads through the students like wildfire.
The Twist:
Each representative is allowed one partner, chosen from another class. But the catch? The representatives must first compete against each other in a preliminary round. Only the top two winners get to choose their partners—making alliances both risky and crucial.
The rules hit like a bombshell. Every class erupts into strategy talks, but one pair of eyes stays unnervingly calm. Ayanokōji Kiyotaka, slouched in his seat, barely reacts, his mind already calculating the angles.
Across the room, another figure remains composed: Arisu Sakayanagi. With her usual grace, she sips from a thermos of tea, her cane resting delicately against her chair. She lets the chatter die down before whispering to herself, "How… interesting."
The Preliminary Round:
The game is announced: A variation of chess, but with hidden cards. Each player starts with a limited set of resources but can barter with "currency" to reveal their opponent's moves or block their strategies. It's a game of wit, patience, and deception.
The Matchup:
When the results of the random pairings flash on the screen, the auditorium goes silent.
Match 3: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka (Class D) vs. Sakayanagi Arisu (Class A).
Gasps ripple through the room. Two of the school's most infamous strategists, head-to-head.
Kushida (whispering): "Poor Sakayanagi-san. She doesn't know who she's up against."
Ryūen (smirking): "Finally, some entertainment."
But up on the stage, neither Ayanokōji nor Sakayanagi reacts. He rises from his seat, hands in his pockets, and walks calmly to his station. She follows moments later, tapping her cane softly against the floor, her expression unreadable.
The Encounter:
The two meet at the board, the chess pieces arranged neatly before them. As the timer counts down, Sakayanagi tilts her head, studying him.
Arisu: "Fate seems to enjoy our little encounters, doesn't it, Ayanokōji-kun?"
Kiyotaka: (meeting her gaze with a blank stare) "Fate? Or someone else pulling the strings?"
She smirks, leaning forward just slightly.
Arisu: "I see you've already made your assumptions. But let me warn you, Ayanokōji-kun, assumptions can be… dangerous."
Kiyotaka: (sits back casually) "Only if they're wrong."
The timer beeps, signaling the start of the match.
The Game Begins:
The chessboard becomes a battlefield, every move laced with subtle taunts.
Sakayanagi plays aggressively, sacrificing pawns to bait him into overextending his position.
Kiyotaka counters with unnerving precision, calculating three moves ahead.
As the game progresses, the crowd grows restless. It's clear to anyone watching that this is not a simple match—it's a clash of two minds operating on a completely different level.
At one point, Sakayanagi places a piece with deliberate care and glances up.
Arisu: "You're quite impressive, Ayanokōji-kun. But tell me, how much of your skill is innate… and how much is borrowed?"
Kiyotaka: (doesn't look up as he makes his move) "Borrowed? You sound disappointed, Sakayanagi-san. Is that the best you can come up with?"
Her smile widens, a flicker of intrigue in her eyes.
Arisu: "Perhaps I'm just curious. But I suppose curiosity is a luxury one can afford when they're winning."
He meets her gaze for the first time since the game began.
Kiyotaka: "Are you?"
The move he places shuts down her strategy completely, forcing her into a defensive position.
The Outcome:
The match ends in a narrow victory for Kiyotaka, but the final move leaves an impression on both players.
As the results are announced, Arisu leans her chin on her hand, still seated.
Arisu: "You're full of surprises, Ayanokōji-kun. I'll admit, it's… refreshing."
Kiyotaka: (pausing for a moment before replying) "The feeling's mutual."
It's subtle, but the look they share is charged—not with hostility, but with something far more dangerous: fascination.
Gossip Girl Voiceover:
"Spotted: Kiyotaka Ayanokōji taking the first victory of Year Two. But don't celebrate just yet, darling. Because while Class D may have won the game, Sakayanagi's playing for the long haul. And something tells me… this is just the opening move. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Two: Fascination in the Aftermath
The air was heavy as the auditorium emptied, the buzz of whispers and muted laughter echoing against the high ceilings. The Year Two Unified Trial had already shifted the dynamics of the school, and everyone knew it.
Kiyotaka walked with his usual unhurried pace, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. The victory against Sakayanagi was neither a surprise nor a triumph in his mind—it was simply necessary. But the faint murmur of his classmates' voices behind him didn't go unnoticed.
"Did you see that? He took down Sakayanagi," Sudo said in a voice a little too loud, his eyes still wide from the spectacle. "That's Class A's genius! Ayanokōji's got some serious skills."
"Yeah, but she nearly had him," muttered Ike, who sounded like he was trying to sound more informed than he actually was. "Man, that girl's terrifying when she smiles like that."
Kiyotaka didn't look back. Their reactions, their speculations—they were just noise, as unimportant as the faint rustling of leaves in the breeze. But even he had to admit… Sakayanagi had surprised him. Her precision, her ability to see through others' strategies—it wasn't often that someone managed to hold his attention for as long as she had.
Across the Hall
From a quieter corner of the room, Sakayanagi sat with her cane resting delicately on her knee, the faintest trace of a smile still on her lips. Her classmates surrounded her in an almost protective circle, Katsuragi included, though his discomfort at the situation was painfully obvious.
"It was close, Sakayanagi-san," one of her loyalists said nervously. "I'm sure if you'd had more time, you would've won."
"Close is still a loss," Katsuragi muttered, his arms crossed tightly. "You let Class D's representative win. That'll only encourage them."
Arisu's smile didn't waver, but her gaze shifted to Katsuragi with the kind of subtle authority that could silence a room. "Encouragement isn't what drives Ayanokōji-kun. But I wouldn't expect you to understand that."
Katsuragi's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
Arisu's thoughts wandered. The memory of the game replayed in her mind—not the moves, but the man across the board. His calm, his focus, the way his gaze never wavered. She'd been certain she was steering the game, only to realize, too late, that he had allowed her to believe that.
She tapped a slender finger against her chin, her smile widening ever so slightly. Intriguing.
Her thoughts were interrupted by movement across the hall.
Kei's Bold Entrance
"Kiyotaka-kun!" The voice rang out, bright and bubbly. Karuizawa Kei strode confidently into the crowd, her long ponytail bouncing with every step. All eyes turned toward her, and she loved it.
Without missing a beat, she looped her arm through Kiyotaka's, leaning into him with a radiant smile. "That was amazing! You're so cool, you know that?" Her voice was loud enough for everyone nearby to hear, and she made sure to flash a smile at every lingering onlooker.
Kiyotaka, of course, didn't react. He let her cling to him, his face as blank as ever. If anything, the mild tension in his posture hinted at his annoyance, but Kei didn't care. She knew her role, and she played it well.
As they passed by Sakayanagi, Kei turned her head just slightly, her eyes meeting Arisu's for the briefest moment. A silent challenge danced in her gaze, though whether it was intentional or just her usual bravado, it was impossible to tell.
Arisu's Observation
Arisu tilted her head, her smile remaining polite but curious as she watched Kei's display. She had heard the rumors, of course—that Karuizawa was Ayanokōji's girlfriend. It explained the confidence, the ease with which the girl clung to him like a trophy. But Arisu found herself… unimpressed.
The cheerleader always gets the prom king, she thought, her fingers lightly tapping the edge of her cane. It's a story as old as time. Shallow, predictable. Uninteresting.
And yet… her gaze lingered. It wasn't that she was immune to appearances—far from it. Arisu was still a young woman, and she could appreciate good looks when she saw them. Kiyotaka had a certain... understated charm. The kind of face that didn't demand attention, but commanded it nonetheless.
But more than that, it was the mystery. The quiet confidence that spoke louder than Kei's theatrics ever could.
Interesting, she thought again, her mind wandering to the image of him across the chessboard. But then again, aren't all puzzles fascinating until you solve them?
Kei's Playful Needling
As they turned a corner, Kei tightened her grip on Kiyotaka's arm, leaning closer. "You could at least pretend to enjoy this, you know," she said, pouting slightly. "I'm working really hard to make you look good here."
Kiyotaka glanced at her, his expression as flat as ever. "I didn't ask you to."
She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, Mr. Cool-and-Unbothered. Whatever. Just so you know, you're lucky I'm doing this. The girls in Class C are already talking about how 'mysterious' and 'hot' you are after that chess thing."
He didn't reply, but she thought she caught the faintest twitch of his eyebrow. Kei grinned. "See? You'd miss me if I wasn't around."
The Queen's Game
Back in the auditorium, Arisu remained seated long after most of the students had gone. Her cane tapped softly against the polished floor as she rose, her loyalists watching her with curious expressions.
"Katsuragi," she said softly, her tone carrying a quiet command.
"Yes?"
"Prepare the Class A representatives for the next stage," she said, a thoughtful smile playing on her lips. "And while you're at it, see if you can find out how much time Karuizawa spends with Ayanokōji-kun outside of class."
Katsuragi frowned. "Why does that matter?"
Arisu's gaze sharpened ever so slightly, her smile unwavering. "Let's just say… I'm curious about his choice of company."
As she made her way out of the auditorium, her mind was already racing, her interest in Ayanokōji growing like a spark in the dark.
Gossip Girl Voiceover:
"Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu watching from the shadows as Karuizawa Kei claims her prize. But careful, darlings—queens don't take kindly to losing their pawns, let alone the king. The game's only just begun. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Three: Allies in the Shadows
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Power doesn't just come from winning battles, darlings. It's about knowing when to wield the sword and when to pass it to someone sharper. And at Advanced Nurturing High, two kings might just find themselves playing on the same team. Temporarily, of course. Because in this school, trust is a luxury no one can afford. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Chaos in Class A
The usually pristine halls of Class A were quieter than normal, but beneath the surface, trouble brewed. Katsuragi sat stiffly at his desk, flanked by two of his more loyal supporters. His tone was low but urgent.
"The way things are going, Sakayanagi's leadership will lead us to ruin," he said, his voice sharp. "She's too focused on her personal games, and the other classes are catching up. If we don't act soon, we'll lose our advantage."
One of his allies nodded, but the other hesitated. "But Sakayanagi-san has her own loyalists. If we try to move against her—"
"We don't need to move directly," Katsuragi interrupted. "We just need to expose her vulnerabilities. The rest will fall into place."
Meanwhile, in Class C
In the back of Class C's room, Ryūen Kakeru lounged in his chair, one leg propped up on the desk in front of him. His trademark smirk was firmly in place as his second-in-command, Ishizaki, tried to explain their latest intel.
"I'm telling you, Ryūen-san, Class A is in chaos," Ishizaki said, glancing around nervously. "Katsuragi's rallying people behind his back."
Ryūen snorted. "Of course he is. Sakayanagi's a tyrant. A smart one, but a tyrant nonetheless." He leaned back further, the smirk widening. "Let them fight it out. It'll make it easier for us to pick them apart when the time comes."
"But what about Class D?" Ishizaki asked. "That Ayanokōji guy—"
"Leave Ayanokōji to me," Ryūen said, his tone low but dangerous. "I've got plans for him."
Arisu's Investigations
In Class A, Sakayanagi's loyalists gathered around her as she sipped her tea, her cane resting on the edge of her desk. She listened calmly as her informants reported Katsuragi's plotting, nodding occasionally but showing little reaction.
"Ryūen's been unusually quiet," one of them said. "Which means he's up to something."
"Of course he is," Arisu said, her tone light but thoughtful. "But Ryūen's schemes are predictable. Katsuragi, however…" She trailed off, her gaze growing sharper. "He's a nuisance. And nuisances need to be dealt with swiftly."
Her mind shifted to another topic, unbidden. Ayanokōji Kiyotaka. Her curiosity about the boy had only grown since their chess match. There was something about his detached calmness, his ability to stay several moves ahead, that made him unlike anyone she'd ever encountered.
And then, of course, there was her. That Karuizawa girl.
Arisu's Subtle Move
By the time lunch rolled around, Arisu had formulated a plan. She called for one of her trusted subordinates, Hashimoto.
"I need you to deliver a message to Ayanokōji-kun," she said.
Hashimoto's eyebrows lifted slightly, but he didn't question her. "A message?"
"Tell him I'd like to arrange a meeting," Arisu said, her smile faint. "Discreetly, of course. We have… mutual annoyances that need addressing."
Hashimoto nodded, though he couldn't hide his curiosity.
Kei Plays Her Role
Later that day, Kiyotaka sat in the courtyard, his usual expression unreadable as Kei leaned against his shoulder. Her voice was bubbly, but there was a slight edge to it, as though she could sense the weight of the gazes around them.
"Kiyotaka-kun, do you think we should go shopping this weekend?" she asked, tilting her head to flash him her most charming smile.
"Shopping?" he repeated flatly.
"Don't sound so enthusiastic," she teased, though her tone was light enough that most would think she was just being playful. In reality, it was her way of reminding everyone watching that he was hers.
From a distance, Arisu watched the exchange, her cane tapping softly against the ground. Her expression remained neutral, but her thoughts were anything but.
The cheerleader and the chess master, she mused. I've never understood the appeal of boys who rely on appearances to gain attention. And yet, as her eyes lingered on Ayanokōji's calm demeanor, she felt a strange flicker of something. Not admiration, not yet. But… fascination.
Perhaps there's more to him than meets the eye.
The Proposition
When the message finally reached Kiyotaka, he showed no visible reaction. Hashimoto had been vague, as instructed, but the implications were clear: Sakayanagi wanted to talk.
By the time the meeting was arranged, the day was nearing its end. They met in an unused classroom, the setting quiet but charged.
Arisu was already seated when he arrived, her posture as composed as ever. She gestured toward the chair across from her with a faint smile.
"Thank you for coming, Ayanokōji-kun," she said. "I trust the message was clear enough?"
He didn't sit immediately, instead observing her with his usual detached gaze. "Clear, but unexpected. What exactly do you want?"
Her smile widened, but it didn't reach her eyes. "To discuss a solution to our respective… nuisances. Katsuragi for me, and Ryūen for you."
He raised an eyebrow, finally taking a seat. "You're assuming I consider Ryūen a problem."
"Aren't you?" she countered smoothly. "He's been unusually quiet, hasn't he? Quietness from someone like him is rarely a good sign."
For a moment, they simply stared at each other, the room heavy with unspoken tension.
"You're not wrong," Kiyotaka said finally. "But why involve me? Surely Class A has the resources to deal with Katsuragi on its own."
Arisu's gaze sharpened. "Because I believe efficiency is important, Ayanokōji-kun. And I suspect that together, we can accomplish far more than we can separately."
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu extending an olive branch—or perhaps a dagger wrapped in silk. And Ayanokōji Kiyotaka, as unreadable as ever, deciding whether to take the bait. A queen and a king at the same table? Be careful, darlings. There's only room for one at the top. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Four: The Pact
The classroom was silent, save for the faint hum of the overhead lights. Ayanokōji sat across from Sakayanagi, his posture relaxed, his expression unreadable. She met his gaze with the same calm confidence, her hands folded neatly on the desk in front of her.
For a few moments, neither spoke. The silence was deliberate, a subtle game to see who would break it first.
Arisu's POV
He's as composed as ever, Arisu thought, her sharp eyes scanning his face for any hint of emotion. It's as if he doesn't even register me as a threat.
She tilted her head slightly, allowing a faint smile to touch her lips. "You're unusually quiet, Ayanokōji-kun. Should I take that as a sign that you're interested?"
He didn't react, not even a flicker of annoyance or amusement. The boy was as frustratingly stoic as ever, but that only intrigued her more.
He's different, she admitted to herself. Not like Katsuragi, who is all bluster and pride. Not like Ryūen, who thrives on chaos. Ayanokōji is deliberate. Methodical. Unreadable.
And, though she hated to admit it, that made him dangerous.
Kiyotaka's POV
She's trying to read me, Kiyotaka thought, watching her with detached interest. Sakayanagi is a strategist by nature. She's not here to waste time with pleasantries. But she's also not revealing her full hand.
Her smile was calculated, her tone calm and controlled. Every move she made was deliberate. Kiyotaka could appreciate that.
But she's underestimating me, he noted. Just slightly.
He leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're offering a partnership, but you've yet to explain what you're bringing to the table."
The Agreement
Arisu allowed herself a small chuckle, her fingers lightly tapping against her cane. "Fair enough," she said. "Katsuragi has been stirring discontent among my classmates for months now. He's rallying support, hoping to force me into a position where I have no choice but to step down."
She paused, her gaze sharpening. "Unfortunately for him, loyalty is not easily bought in Class A. But his persistence is… tiresome. I suspect Ryūen has been feeding him information, hoping to weaken me."
Kiyotaka raised an eyebrow. "And you believe I care about Ryūen's involvement?"
"I believe you care about efficiency, Ayanokōji-kun," she replied smoothly. "And removing Ryūen from the equation benefits both of us. You want to keep him in check, and I want Katsuragi to lose his leverage. A shared problem. A shared solution."
Kiyotaka's POV
She's playing her cards well, Kiyotaka thought. Positioning herself as an ally, but leaving just enough room to maneuver if things go south. Smart.
Still, there was a logic to her proposal. Katsuragi's coup would weaken Class A, and a weakened Class A would shift Ryūen's attention toward other targets—likely Class D.
"I'll consider it," he said finally.
Arisu's smile widened, just a fraction. "I had a feeling you might. But let's not waste time, Ayanokōji-kun. Ryūen is not the type to wait patiently for an opportunity."
Kei's Name Drops
As the conversation drew to a close, Arisu's tone shifted, becoming almost casual. "By the way, I couldn't help but notice your girlfriend's… enthusiasm earlier. Karuizawa-san, was it?"
Kiyotaka's eyes flickered, just for a moment—a subtle reaction, but enough for Arisu to notice.
"She seems… spirited," Arisu continued, her tone light but laced with amusement. "The cheerleader type, isn't she? Always drawn to the star players."
Kiyotaka didn't respond, but inwardly, he felt a ripple of something unfamiliar. She's testing me, he realized. But why bring up Kei?
For the first time, he allowed himself a moment of reflection. She doesn't know about the arrangement. To her, Kei is genuine. The thought lingered, unsettlingly so.
The Plot Takes Shape
Later that evening, Kiyotaka found himself in the library, the faint hum of the air conditioning blending with the sound of pages turning. Horikita sat across from him, her expression as stern as ever.
"You're working with Sakayanagi?" she asked, her voice low but incredulous.
"She approached me," Kiyotaka replied.
"And you agreed?"
He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he placed a book on the table, the spine creasing slightly under his fingers. "Her proposal is mutually beneficial. Katsuragi's rebellion weakens Class A. Ryūen's schemes are a distraction we don't need. Removing them both simplifies things."
Horikita frowned but didn't argue further. She knew better than to question his logic, even if she didn't fully trust it.
Ichinose's Involvement
Across campus, Honami Ichinose was busy rallying her own classmates. Her bright smile and cheerful demeanor masked the subtle anxiety that lingered in her mind.
"I heard Sakayanagi and Ayanokōji were seen talking," one of her classmates said.
"Really?" Honami replied, her tone light but curious. "That's… interesting."
Her smile didn't waver, but inside, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was brewing—something bigger than the usual class rivalries.
Ryūen's Preparation
In Class C, Ryūen was already setting his plans into motion. Ishizaki and Albert stood by as he reviewed a stack of papers, his smirk growing wider with each passing second.
"Sakayanagi's losing control," he said finally. "Katsuragi's doing half the work for us. All we have to do is give him a little… push."
Ishizaki shifted nervously. "And what about Ayanokōji?"
Ryūen's smirk didn't falter. "Let him try to stop me. It'll be more fun that way."
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Arisu Sakayanagi and Kiyotaka Ayanokōji forming an alliance as the vultures circle overhead. But alliances have a funny way of turning into battlefields, don't they? And as for Karuizawa Kei? Let's just say queens don't take kindly to losing the king's attention. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Five: Silent Signals
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"They say communication is key, but at Advanced Nurturing High, the sharpest minds don't need words—they play their cards in silence. Spotted: two rivals texting their way to an alliance that's as dangerous as it is fascinating. But careful, darlings—when you share secrets, you share power. And power always comes with a price. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The library was quiet, the soft shuffle of pages and the occasional click of a keyboard the only sounds breaking the stillness. Kiyotaka leaned against the table, his phone in one hand, a stack of textbooks in the other.
The screen lit up with a message.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Katsuragi is making his next move tomorrow. He's planning to meet with two Class C students after school. Your thoughts?"
Kiyotaka glanced at the message, his face remaining impassive. He typed a quick reply.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Let him. If we intervene too early, it'll give him time to adjust his strategy. Better to let him believe he's gaining ground."
A moment later, her response came through.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Efficient as always, Ayanokōji-kun. But I wonder—are you this pragmatic in all your relationships? Or just the ones that benefit you?"
Kiyotaka paused, his thumb hovering over the screen. Is she trying to bait me? Or is this her way of testing boundaries? He couldn't tell, and that made her all the more intriguing.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Relationships are only as useful as the outcomes they produce."
The reply was simple, calculated. But when Arisu's next message came through, it was clear she wasn't done yet.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How very... transactional of you. Tell me, Ayanokōji-kun, does your girlfriend agree with that philosophy?"
A faint flicker of annoyance crossed his mind. She's poking at Karuizawa again. But he knew better than to rise to the bait.
Kei's Jealousy
The next evening, Kiyotaka sat on one of the outdoor benches, his phone in hand as he reviewed the latest texts from Sakayanagi.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Katsuragi's meeting has moved to the rooftop. Hashimoto is keeping an eye on them. I'll forward you the details shortly."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Understood. Ensure your loyalists don't engage unless absolutely necessary. This needs to look like his failure, not interference."
Before he could type anything else, Kei's voice rang out from behind him.
"Kiyotaka-kun!"
She approached with her usual confident stride, but something about her energy seemed slightly off. He glanced up, tucking his phone into his pocket just as she reached him.
"What are you doing?" she asked casually, but her tone was sharper than usual.
"Nothing important," he replied.
Her eyes flicked to his pocket, and he could tell she was tempted to ask more. Instead, she sat down beside him, her shoulder brushing his. "You're always on your phone these days. Is it school stuff?"
"Something like that," he said, keeping his tone deliberately vague.
Kei narrowed her eyes, leaning back with a dramatic sigh. "You're so boring, you know that? You should let me see what you're up to. It's not like you're texting another girl, right?"
The comment was meant to be teasing, but her voice held a faint edge of suspicion.
Kiyotaka's POV
She's actually jealous, Kiyotaka realized, watching her carefully. The idea was strange—after all, their relationship was nothing more than a facade. But the genuine irritation in her expression was hard to miss.
He hadn't anticipated this. Kei was usually so controlled in her role, so calculated in how she interacted with him in public. This slip was… unexpected.
"You're overthinking," he said finally, his tone as calm as ever. "It's nothing."
But Kei didn't look entirely convinced.
Kei's POV
Nothing, my ass, Kei thought, glancing at his pocket again. Kiyotaka was always so unreadable, so untouchable, but something about the way he'd tucked his phone away so quickly made her chest tighten.
She knew she shouldn't care. Their arrangement wasn't real—it was a shield, a way to keep her safe. But still…
"Whatever," she said, forcing herself to sound breezy. She flipped her ponytail over her shoulder and leaned back, pretending to enjoy the view. "Just don't forget who's supposed to be your number one, okay?"
Kiyotaka didn't respond, but for the first time, she thought she caught a flicker of something in his eyes.
Sakayanagi's POV
Across campus, Arisu sat in her room, her phone resting on the table beside her as she poured herself a cup of tea. The conversation with Ayanokōji had been productive, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the chessboard-like dynamics of the school.
Katsuragi is a fool, easily manipulated. Ryūen is dangerous but predictable. And Ayanokōji…
Her fingers hovered over her phone, a faint smile playing on her lips. He's a puzzle I haven't solved yet.
She sent one final text before setting the phone aside.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Don't keep me waiting, Ayanokōji-kun. Efficiency is key, remember?"
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei feeling the heat as Sakayanagi Arisu steps into Ayanokōji's inbox. But careful, sweeties—jealousy's a slippery slope. And as for our two masterminds? They may be allies for now, but everyone knows what happens when fire meets ice. It burns. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Six: When Kings Fall
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Power is fragile, darlings. The higher you climb, the harder you fall. And in the world of Advanced Nurturing High, there's always someone waiting to push you off the edge. Spotted: Katsuragi treading dangerous waters, Ryūen sharpening his knives, and two unlikely allies texting their way toward something neither of them expected. But careful—sometimes the strongest bonds are the most dangerous. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Katsuragi's Implosion
The rooftop meeting Katsuragi had arranged with two Class C students was already a disaster by the time Sakayanagi's loyalist Hashimoto arrived to observe.
The Class C students were uneasy, clearly out of their depth as Katsuragi tried to convince them to share information about Ryūen's next move.
"This is your chance," Katsuragi said, his voice low but firm. "If you help us, Class A will owe you a favor."
The Class C students exchanged nervous glances. "We… we can't just betray Ryūen like that. He'll—"
"Enough."
The voice came from the stairwell, cold and sharp. Everyone turned to see Sakayanagi herself stepping onto the rooftop, her cane tapping lightly against the concrete. Behind her, Hashimoto smirked, clearly enjoying the unfolding drama.
"Katsuragi-san," Arisu said, her tone deceptively sweet. "I thought we agreed to handle these matters together."
Katsuragi stiffened, his jaw tightening. "You weren't handling it. Someone had to act."
"And yet, here you are, making deals behind my back." Her smile didn't waver, but her gaze was ice-cold. "You've overstepped, Katsuragi-san. And now you've left us exposed."
The Class C students looked ready to bolt, their loyalty to Ryūen outweighing whatever promises Katsuragi had made.
"Leave," Arisu said, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade. The Class C students didn't hesitate—they scrambled down the stairs, leaving Katsuragi alone with Sakayanagi and her loyalists.
Arisu tilted her head, her smile widening. "You've become quite the liability, Katsuragi-san. Perhaps it's time we re-evaluated your position in Class A."
Katsuragi's face darkened, but he didn't argue. He knew better.
The Next Target: Ryūen
That evening, Kiyotaka received another text from Arisu.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Katsuragi has been… dealt with. Ryūen is next. Let's meet tomorrow to discuss strategy. I assume you'll bring that trademark efficiency of yours?"
Kiyotaka replied with his usual brevity.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"I'll handle it."
A moment later, another message appeared.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"You're quite confident, Ayanokōji-kun. I wonder… is it because you've already anticipated Ryūen's next move? Or because you think I have?"
Kiyotaka allowed himself a faint smirk as he typed his response.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Does it matter?"
Her reply came almost instantly.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Not in the slightest. See you tomorrow, then."
Kushida's Cryptic Comment
The next day, during lunch, Kushida approached Kiyotaka while he was sitting alone in the cafeteria. Her usual cheerful demeanor was firmly in place, but there was a flicker of something in her eyes—something sharper, more calculating.
"Mind if I sit here?" she asked, not waiting for a response before sliding into the seat across from him.
Kiyotaka didn't look up from his food. "What do you want, Kushida?"
She leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping just enough that only he could hear. "You know, Ayanokōji-kun, you're starting to move in ways I don't think even you fully understand."
That made him pause. He met her gaze, his expression carefully neutral. "And what exactly does that mean?"
Kushida's smile widened, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Just an observation," she said lightly, standing up and smoothing her skirt. "Be careful, though. Sometimes when you go too deep, you find things you weren't looking for."
She walked away, leaving Kiyotaka with a faint sense of unease. What did she mean by that?
Arisu and Kiyotaka: Planning and Sparring
Later that afternoon, Kiyotaka and Arisu met in an empty classroom. She was already seated when he arrived, her phone resting on the desk beside her and her usual faint smile in place.
"Punctual as always," she said as he sat down. "Shall we get started?"
They discussed their strategy for dealing with Ryūen—how to manipulate his paranoia, sow distrust among his allies, and force him into a position where he'd overextend.
But as the conversation progressed, it began to shift, almost imperceptibly, toward something more personal.
"You're remarkably composed, Ayanokōji-kun," Arisu said at one point, her tone thoughtful. "Even in the most chaotic situations, you never seem… affected. Is that natural? Or learned?"
Kiyotaka glanced at her, his expression as calm as ever. "Does it matter?"
"Perhaps not," she admitted. "But it's fascinating, nonetheless."
"And you?" he asked, his tone light but probing. "Do you always keep people at arm's length?"
Her smile widened, but her eyes remained guarded. "Only when necessary."
For a moment, the air between them felt charged—less like two rivals plotting and more like two equals trying to understand each other.
Kei's Jealousy Escalates
That evening, as Kiyotaka sat on his dorm bed texting Arisu, his door opened without warning. Kei walked in, her usual confidence giving way to irritation when she saw him on his phone.
"Let me guess," she said, crossing her arms. "School stuff?"
Kiyotaka didn't respond, but she noticed the faint flicker of a name on the screen before he locked it: Sakayanagi Arisu.
Her irritation turned to something sharper. "You're spending a lot of time talking to her lately," she said, her tone a little too casual. "Is there something I should know?"
He looked up at her, his expression unreadable. "It's nothing."
"Right," she said, rolling her eyes. "Nothing." She turned and left, but not before muttering under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear, "You better not forget about me, Kiyotaka-kun."
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Kushida planting seeds of doubt, Karuizawa battling jealousy, and Sakayanagi tightening her grip on Ayanokōji's attention. But in a school where everyone plays games, the biggest question remains: who's playing who? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Seven: Kings, Queens, and Competition
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"It's one thing to take down your enemies, darlings, but what about the chaos that follows? Spotted: Katsuragi out of the picture, Ryūen caught in the crosshairs, and two unlikely allies texting their way toward something far more dangerous. But careful, loves—when jealousy enters the game, even queens can lose their crowns. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Ryūen's Downfall
The plan to deal with Ryūen played out exactly as expected. By planting false rumors about dissent within Class A, Kiyotaka and Arisu had successfully lured Ryūen into a trap. His paranoia had forced him to act rashly, alienating his loyalists and leaving him vulnerable.
The final blow came when Ryūen's second-in-command, Ishizaki, confronted him in front of their class, accusing him of recklessness.
"You're just going to drag us all down!" Ishizaki shouted. "We're tired of your games, Ryūen-san!"
Ryūen, for once, had no clever retort. His smirk faltered, and though he quickly regained his composure, the damage was done.
The First Text from Kiyotaka
Later that evening, Kiyotaka sat at his desk, his phone in hand. For once, it wasn't Sakayanagi who initiated the conversation.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Ryūen's implosion went smoother than expected. Efficient, as always."
The reply came quickly.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Efficient? My, my, Ayanokōji-kun. That almost sounded like a compliment."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Observation. Nothing more."
There was a pause before her next message came through, and when it did, it carried a teasing undertone.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"I suppose that's as close to praise as I'll get from you. But tell me, Ayanokōji-kun, what prompted this uncharacteristic initiative? Surely you didn't text just to flatter me."
Kiyotaka's fingers hovered over the screen for a moment before he typed his response.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You're making Karuizawa jealous."
Arisu's Fascination
Arisu blinked at the message, her lips curving into a slow, amused smile.
Karuizawa? she thought. The idea was almost absurd—a girl like that, with her effortless beauty and confidence, feeling jealous of her.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Jealous? How interesting. And here I thought she was far too busy basking in her own spotlight to notice little old me."
Kiyotaka's response came immediately.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"She's noticed. More than you think."
Arisu leaned back in her chair, her smile widening. Fascinating. She had always been indifferent to the usual trappings of high school relationships—boys, popularity, romance. None of it had ever held her interest. But the idea of being the source of someone else's jealousy, especially someone like Karuizawa?
It was… exciting.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How flattering. Tell me, Ayanokōji-kun, does her jealousy bother you? Or do you find it amusing?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Neither. But I thought you'd like to know."
Arisu chuckled softly, her fingers tapping lightly against her phone.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How considerate of you. Perhaps I should thank her for the attention."
The Whispering in Class D
The next morning, the news of both Katsuragi and Ryūen being sidelined spread like wildfire. In Class D, whispers and rumors swirled as students tried to make sense of what had happened.
"It's weird, right?" Ike muttered to Sudo. "First Katsuragi gets completely shut down, and now Ryūen's out too? Who's pulling the strings?"
"Probably Horikita," Sudo said confidently, crossing his arms. "She's been on fire lately."
The conversation caught the attention of the rest of the class, and soon all eyes were on Horikita.
"Horikita-san, was it you?" one of the girls asked, her voice tinged with awe. "Did you really outplay both Class A and Class C?"
Horikita opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, Kiyotaka interjected.
"It's impressive, isn't it?" he said, his tone as calm and deliberate as ever. "Horikita has been quietly leading the class toward success this entire time. She's smarter than most people realize."
The class murmured in agreement, the praise boosting Horikita's reputation even further.
Horikita's Reaction
Later, when the commotion had died down, Horikita approached Kiyotaka, her expression unreadable.
"You didn't have to do that," she said quietly.
"You're welcome," he replied.
She frowned but didn't press the issue. Deep down, she suspected he'd done it for reasons she couldn't fully understand.
Kushida's Observation
As the class buzzed with excitement, Kushida leaned toward Kei, her expression sweet but her words sharp as ever.
"Isn't it amazing?" she said, her voice low enough that only Kei could hear. "Horikita-san is such a great asset to Class D. You must be so proud of how well your boyfriend and her work together."
Kei froze for a split second, her smile faltering just slightly. "Horikita, sure…" she muttered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
Kushida's smile widened ever so slightly. She leaned closer, her tone dripping with faux concern.
"Don't worry, babe," she whispered. "I know competition can be tough. But I'm sure you'll find a way to keep his attention."
Kei's hands clenched into fists under the desk, her irritation bubbling beneath the surface.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Kushida stirring the pot, Karuizawa clenching her fists, and Sakayanagi savoring her newfound influence. But the question remains, darlings: when the king and queen text their way to mutual respect, who gets left behind? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Eight: The Games We Play
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Jealousy, darlings—it's the spark that can ignite a wildfire. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei battling her doubts, Kushida Kikyo whispering poison, and Sakayanagi Arisu savoring her influence. But when a king and queen start trading barbs that feel more like sparks, the line between ally and enemy begins to blur. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Kei's Growing Coldness
For the past few days, Kei had been quieter than usual around Kiyotaka. She still played her role as the bubbly, affectionate girlfriend in public, but when they were alone, her energy felt… off.
Kiyotaka noticed immediately. He always noticed.
She didn't lean on him as much. Her teasing had softened, almost hesitant. And though she still smiled, it didn't reach her eyes.
As they walked to their next class, Kei spoke casually. "Kiyotaka-kun, do you need anything from the convenience store later?"
"No," he said simply, watching her out of the corner of his eye. "Why?"
She shrugged, her tone forcedly light. "Just thought I'd ask. No big deal."
She's avoiding something, Kiyotaka thought. But what?
Kushida's Subtle Manipulation
Later that day, Kei sat alone on the courtyard steps, fiddling with her phone but not really paying attention to the screen. Her mind was racing with thoughts of Sakayanagi—her calm, unshakable smile, her ability to command attention without even trying.
Kei hated the way it made her feel.
"Kei-chan?"
Kei glanced up to see Kushida standing nearby, her smile warm and inviting as always. "Mind if I sit?"
Kei hesitated, but nodded. "Sure."
For a few minutes, Kushida said nothing, letting the silence settle between them. Then, as casually as ever, she said, "You've seemed a little… off lately. Is everything okay?"
Kei's grip tightened on her phone. "I'm fine," she said quickly. "Just… tired, I guess."
Kushida tilted her head, her smile never wavering. "Are you sure? You can tell me, you know. I mean, we're kind of alike, right? Both of us have our… ways of handling things."
Kei frowned slightly, not sure what she meant but unwilling to press.
Kushida leaned closer, her voice soft but laced with intent. "Sometimes, when something—or someone—gets in the way, the best solution is to deal with it quickly. Like squishing a bug before it becomes a problem."
Kei's eyes widened slightly, and though Kushida quickly changed the subject, the words lingered in her mind. Squish the bug.
Kei's Interpretation
That night, Kei sat in her room, scrolling through social media absentmindedly. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Sakayanagi.
Squish the bug.
Kushida's words played over and over in her mind. She wasn't entirely sure what Kushida had meant, but the idea had taken root. Sakayanagi wasn't just another pretty girl—she was smart, composed, and far too close to Kiyotaka for comfort.
If Kei wanted to keep her position, she needed to act.
The Late-Night Texts
As Kei was lost in her thoughts, Kiyotaka sat in his own room, staring at his phone. For the second time that week, he initiated the conversation with Sakayanagi.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Karuizawa has been colder than usual lately. I think you're the reason why."
The reply came almost immediately.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Am I, now? How fascinating. Do tell, Ayanokōji-kun—what makes you think I'm to blame?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"She's noticed how much time I've spent dealing with your… nuisances. And I think she's noticed you, too."
Arisu smirked as she read the message, her fingers lingering over the keyboard before she typed her reply.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How delightful. I've never been the subject of anyone's jealousy before. Especially not someone like Karuizawa-san."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You seem almost excited by it."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Perhaps I am. Tell me, Ayanokōji-kun, does it bother you? That your girlfriend is upset because of me?"
Kiyotaka's lips curved into the faintest of smirks.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Should it?"
For a moment, Arisu hesitated. She hadn't expected him to push back so directly.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"You're quite bold tonight. Tell me, Ayanokōji-kun, are you always this… daring in your conversations, or is it just with me?"
His reply was quick, almost teasing.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You seem unusually interested in me lately. Why is that?"
Arisu blinked at the screen, her smile fading into something more thoughtful. Why, indeed?
For the first time, she realized she was genuinely enjoying these exchanges—not just the strategy, but the challenge of keeping up with someone who matched her wit so effortlessly.
Her next message was short but loaded with meaning.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Perhaps because you're interesting, Ayanokōji-kun. Isn't that enough?"
Kiyotaka stared at the screen, his expression unreadable. But inwardly, he felt a flicker of something he hadn't expected: intrigue.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei plotting, Kushida Kikyo planting seeds, and Sakayanagi Arisu flirting for the first time ever—via text, of course. But as the king and queen push each other's boundaries, one question remains: who's really in control? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Nine: A Battle of Wills
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"They say queens rule from the throne, but sometimes, even royalty feels the need to dirty their hands. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei plotting from the shadows, Sakayanagi Arisu watching with amusement, and Ayanokōji Kiyotaka stuck in the middle. But when jealousy sparks a fire, will it burn out of control? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Kei's First Move
Kei leaned against the wall in the hallway, her phone gripped tightly in one hand as she stared out the window. Her mind raced as she thought about how to deal with Sakayanagi.
She wasn't a strategist, but she knew how to get information. And the best source of information about other classes was none other than Honami Ichinose.
Later that afternoon, Kei casually approached Ichinose, her voice light and breezy as always.
"Honami-chan! Got a sec?" Kei asked, plastering on her best friendly smile.
Ichinose, ever the cheerful and approachable class leader, turned with a bright smile. "Of course, Kei-chan! What's up?"
Kei hesitated for a moment before diving in. "So, you know Sakayanagi-san from Class A, right? What's she like? I've only seen her from a distance, but she seems… intense."
Ichinose tilted her head, her expression thoughtful. "Arisu-chan? Hmm… well, she's definitely a strategist. Super smart, always calm, and, like, scary good at reading people. But honestly, I don't know her that well. She keeps to herself, mostly."
Kei nodded, pretending to absorb the information casually. "I see. Do you think she's the type to, like, hold grudges or go after people for no reason?"
Ichinose laughed softly. "Not really. But if someone crosses her… well, let's just say she doesn't lose."
Kei's stomach tightened slightly at the words, but she forced herself to smile. "Good to know. Thanks, Honami-chan!"
Ichinose waved her off, but as Kei walked away, she felt no closer to a solution.
Arisu Notices the Plot
Later that evening, Hashimoto, one of Arisu's loyalists, leaned against her desk, a sly grin on his face.
"You're going to love this, Sakayanagi-san," he said. "That Karuizawa girl? She's been poking around, asking questions about you. Even talked to Ichinose today."
Arisu's fingers tapped lightly against her cane, her smile widening. "How… amusing," she said softly.
She tilted her head slightly, her thoughts shifting. Karuizawa-san is jealous. That much is obvious. But to act on it? How delightfully bold.
For a moment, Arisu felt something unexpected—pride. There was a part of her that wanted to see what Karuizawa would do next, to watch her squirm under pressure.
Or perhaps, she thought, her smile sharpening, I want to put her in her place myself.
The realization surprised her. She had never cared about such trivial rivalries before. Why, then, did this one matter?
The Late-Night Texts
As Arisu sat in her room later that night, sipping tea and mulling over the situation, her phone buzzed with a familiar notification.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"I assume you've noticed Karuizawa's been… busy."
Arisu chuckled softly, setting her teacup down as she typed her reply.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Busy? That's a polite way of putting it. Tell me, Ayanokōji-kun—should I feel honored that your girlfriend considers me such a threat?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You're assuming she considers you a threat. She could just be curious."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Curiosity rarely drives people to ask about my reputation. But I digress—should I prepare for her to take action? Or better yet, should I encourage it?"
Kiyotaka stared at the screen for a moment before responding.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Encourage it? Why would you bother?"
Her response came quickly, her words carrying an edge of playful malice.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Because, Ayanokōji-kun, I find it… entertaining. Besides, wouldn't it be fun to see just how far Karuizawa-san is willing to go?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"And what will you do if she does take action? Put her in her place?"
Arisu smirked, leaning back in her chair.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"If she decides to proceed, yes. I'll admit, the idea is… tempting. Don't you think she should learn where she stands?"
Kiyotaka raised an eyebrow at the message. He typed slowly, deliberately.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Why do her actions bother you so much? I thought someone like you wouldn't concern herself with petty things like jealousy."
The question caught Arisu off guard. She hesitated, her fingers hovering over the keyboard as she considered her answer. Finally, she settled on honesty—or as close to honesty as she allowed herself.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Bother? No, Ayanokōji-kun. But intrigue? Perhaps."
Her phone buzzed almost immediately.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Interesting answer."
For a moment, the silence stretched between them, even through the distance of their texts.
Kiyotaka's Internal Reflection
As he set his phone down, Kiyotaka allowed himself a rare moment of introspection. He couldn't quite place the reason, but he realized he genuinely enjoyed these exchanges with Sakayanagi.
She's different, he thought. Unpredictable. Challenging.
The realization didn't bother him. If anything, it intrigued him.
Interesting, he thought again, his lips twitching into the faintest of smirks. Let's see where this goes.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa digging her own grave, Sakayanagi savoring the challenge, and Ayanokōji admitting to himself—for the first time—that he's intrigued. But in a school where every move is calculated, who will slip first? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Ten: A Game of Hearts
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Ah, the beach episode. A time for sun, sand, and simmering tension. Spotted: Class D letting loose, Karuizawa Kei still keeping her guard up, and Sakayanagi Arisu playing it cool as always. But when the king takes an unexpected interest in the queen, who will end up making the first move? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Poolside Scene
The campus recreation center was buzzing with life as students from every class made use of the massive indoor pool and surrounding spa facilities. The sound of splashing water, laughter, and the occasional overconfident yell filled the air.
Kiyotaka stood near the edge of the pool, his usual expression of quiet detachment firmly in place as Sudo and Ike lounged nearby. Both were loudly arguing over which girl they should try to approach.
"Man, I'm telling you, Ichinose is the best option," Ike said, gesturing wildly. "She's sweet, she's cute, and she's got that whole 'girl-next-door' vibe."
"Yeah, but Honami's way out of your league," Sudo shot back, crossing his arms. "You should aim lower. What about Matsushita?"
"She's cute, too!" Ike retorted, then elbowed Kiyotaka. "What about you, Ayanokōji? If you weren't with Karuizawa, who'd you go for? F*k, marry, kill. Ichinose, Matsushita, or… Sakayanagi."
The last name earned a loud groan from Sudo. "Sakayanagi? Ugh, pass. She's scary as hell, and I bet she'd cut you down with just a look."
"Not to mention she's so cold," Ike added with a shrug. "I mean, she's not bad-looking, but who'd want to deal with that personality?"
Kiyotaka said nothing, but inwardly, he felt a flicker of something unfamiliar—a strange sense of irritation at the casual dismissal of Sakayanagi.
Cold? Unattractive? The words felt absurd to him.
Though he didn't allow his expression to betray it, he found her striking—her poised elegance, her sharp eyes that seemed to see through everything, and the quiet confidence that set her apart. There was a beauty to her that was far more captivating than anything surface-level.
And yet, what surprised him most was the unexpected desire to defend her. He didn't speak up, but the feeling lingered, unsettling and strangely… protective.
Kei's Snoopfest
Kei sat a few feet away, pretending to scroll through her phone as she eavesdropped on the boys' conversation. Her gaze flicked to Kiyotaka, her stomach twisting when she noticed how detached he seemed, as though he wasn't even paying attention to her.
What's going on with him lately? she wondered, her irritation bubbling beneath the surface. He'd been texting someone constantly—probably her—and now he was even more distant than usual.
She sighed, forcing herself to remain calm. If Sakayanagi wants to play games, fine. Two can play.
Evening at the Resort Hotel
By the time evening rolled around, the students had settled into their rooms at the resort hotel. The atmosphere was lively, with laughter and chatter spilling into the hallways as groups planned late-night activities.
In her private room, Arisu sat by the window, the soft light of the lamp casting a golden glow over her as she sipped her tea. The day had been uneventful, save for the occasional observation of Karuizawa-san's clumsy attempts at snooping.
Amusing, but hardly worth my attention, she thought, gazing out at the moonlit beach.
A sudden tap on the glass startled her.
She turned sharply, her eyes widening when she saw Kiyotaka standing outside her window, his expression as calm as ever.
For the first time in years, she felt genuinely off-balance. What is he doing here?
Rising slowly, she opened the window, her voice carefully measured. "Ayanokōji-kun. To what do I owe the pleasure of this… unexpected visit?"
He didn't answer immediately, stepping inside and glancing around the room as though assessing his surroundings. Finally, he spoke. "Come for a walk with me."
Arisu blinked, her composure wavering slightly. "A walk?"
"Yes," he said simply. "It's quiet outside."
For a moment, she considered refusing. But there was something in his tone—an undercurrent of curiosity, perhaps—that made her pause. Against her better judgment, she nodded.
"Very well," she said, reaching for her cane. "Lead the way."
As they stepped into the cool night air, neither of them spoke, the silence between them charged with unspoken thoughts.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka climbing through Sakayanagi Arisu's window for a midnight stroll. But careful, loves—when a king and queen step off the board, who's really moving the pieces? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Eleven: Beneath the Surface
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Late-night walks, stolen moments, and quiet confessions. Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu sneaking away under the stars, while Karuizawa Kei stumbles onto the truth. But when hearts are laid bare, who ends up losing their footing? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Stroll
The moon hung high, casting a soft glow over the serene campus grounds as Kiyotaka and Arisu walked side by side. Their footsteps were almost silent, the crisp evening air carrying the faint rustle of leaves.
Arisu's cane tapped gently against the path, her gaze steady but thoughtful. She broke the silence first.
"Ayanokōji-kun," she began, her tone calm but curious. "This… invitation. What prompted it?"
Kiyotaka glanced at her, his expression as unreadable as ever. "I felt like it."
The simplicity of his answer caught her off guard. For someone so calculated, so deliberate in every action, the idea of him doing something on a whim felt almost absurd.
"You… felt like it?" she repeated, raising an eyebrow.
He nodded. "Yes."
Arisu tilted her head, studying him as they continued walking. She couldn't shake the sense that there was more to his actions than he was letting on.
The Empty Room
Meanwhile, in the hotel, Kei stood outside Kiyotaka's room, her arms crossed and her foot tapping impatiently. She knocked again, louder this time, but there was no answer.
Where is he? she thought, irritation bubbling beneath the surface.
As she turned to leave, she spotted Kushida a few doors down, leaning casually against the wall.
"Looking for Ayanokōji-kun?" Kushida asked, her voice as sweet and innocent as ever.
Kei hesitated, trying to mask her frustration. "Yeah. He's not here."
Kushida's eyes gleamed with amusement. "Oh, I saw him earlier. Looked like he was climbing into someone's window. So mysterious, don't you think?"
Kei froze, her mind racing. Someone's window?
Kushida shrugged, her tone airy. "Probably nothing, though. I'm sure he'll be back soon."
Kei forced a smile, but as she walked away, her hands clenched into fists. Sakayanagi. It has to be her.
The Pond
The path ended at a small pond, its surface smooth and shimmering under the moonlight. Without speaking, Kiyotaka and Arisu sat down on the edge, their shoes discarded as they dipped their toes into the cool water.
For a few moments, they sat in silence, the world around them quiet save for the occasional chirp of a cricket.
Arisu was the first to speak. "You're not one for idle conversation, Ayanokōji-kun. I can only assume you have something on your mind."
He glanced at her, his face as calm as ever. "The guys in my class were playing a game earlier. It involved you."
Her eyes flickered with curiosity, though her tone remained steady. "Oh? And what did they say?"
"They don't find you attractive," he said bluntly. "They think you're cold and unapproachable."
Arisu let out a soft laugh, her smile faint. "Hardly surprising. It's not the first time I've heard such things, and it won't be the last. Their opinions are… irrelevant."
Kiyotaka nodded. "I thought so, too. But it bothered me."
The words hung in the air, and for the first time, Arisu's composure cracked. Her breath hitched, so subtly that only someone as observant as Kiyotaka would notice.
Bothered him? Why would it bother him?
She turned to face him fully, her eyes searching his face. "And why, Ayanokōji-kun, are you telling me this?"
He held her gaze, his voice calm but sincere. "Because it's the first time I've felt like arguing with them. Even though I know it's beneath us both."
Arisu's heart skipped a beat, the steady rhythm she prided herself on suddenly faltering. What is this? What does this mean?
Externally, she forced herself to remain composed, though her voice came out softer than usual. "Why would you feel the need to defend me?"
Kiyotaka looked back at the water, his tone as even as ever. "I don't know. But I did. And this is the first time I've wanted to share that with someone."
The weight of his words settled over them like a blanket, and for a moment, the air between them felt charged, as though the world had shrunk to just the two of them.
Arisu's mind raced. What is this? Why does it feel so… intense?
For a brief second, she thought he might lean closer. And what surprised her most was the thought that crossed her mind: Would I let him?
The realization jolted her back to reality. She stood abruptly, brushing invisible dust from her skirt. "We should head back. It's getting late."
Kiyotaka nodded, rising to his feet. "Agreed."
The Walk Back
They walked in silence, the earlier tension lingering between them like an unspoken question.
As they reached the hotel, Arisu paused, turning to face him. "Thank you, Ayanokōji-kun. For tonight. It was… unexpected, but enjoyable."
He inclined his head slightly. "I feel the same. This was a first for me, too."
For the first time in a long while, Arisu felt something warm bloom in her chest—something she couldn't quite name.
She smiled faintly. "Goodnight, then."
"Goodnight," he replied, watching as she disappeared into the building.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Ayanokōji and Sakayanagi sharing secrets by the water, while Karuizawa Kei gears up for war. But when kings and queens play with fire, who will end up getting burned? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Twelve: Lines in the Sand
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Sleepless nights, simmering feelings, and one storm on the horizon. Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu wide awake and wondering, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka caught in the middle, and Karuizawa Kei ready to go to war. But when promises clash with unexpected emotions, who will end up crossing the line? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Arisu's Restless Night
Arisu lay in her bed, the soft glow of her bedside lamp casting long shadows across the room. Her mind refused to quiet, replaying the events of the evening over and over.
The pond, the moonlight, his words.
"It's the first time I've felt like arguing with them. Even though I know it's beneath us both."
She turned onto her side, her hand brushing against the edge of her pillow as her lips pressed into a thin line. The memory of his voice lingered, steady and calm yet carrying a weight she couldn't ignore.
And then, her thoughts wandered—unbidden, unexpected—to the almost-kiss.
Her chest tightened, a blush creeping up her neck. What would that have felt like?
She froze, the thought catching her completely off guard. What am I doing? she thought, her fingers tightening against the sheets. I've never cared for such things. I've never wanted them.
But now, the idea wouldn't leave her. She closed her eyes, the faintest smile tugging at her lips.
He's fascinating. Infuriating. And for the first time, I find myself wondering… what if?
Kiyotaka's Reflections
As Kiyotaka walked back to his room, his thoughts were unusually unsettled.
The image of Arisu at the pond lingered in his mind—the soft glow of moonlight on her pale skin, the way her voice wavered just slightly when she'd asked why he felt the need to defend her.
Why did I feel the need?
He didn't have an answer. Logic told him it was a simple reaction, an instinct to push back against the boys' crudeness. But a part of him, buried deeper than he liked to admit, knew there was more to it.
She's different, he thought. And for the first time, I wanted to share something with someone who could understand it.
It was strange, unsettling, but not unwelcome.
As he approached his door, he spotted a figure standing just outside. Kei.
Her arms were crossed, her expression dark and stormy. "Where have you been?"
Kei's Explosion
Kiyotaka sighed inwardly, unlocking the door and stepping inside. "Come in," he said calmly, leaving the door open for her.
Kei followed, slamming it shut behind her. "Don't just walk away like that! I've been waiting for you all night!"
Kiyotaka turned, his face as unreadable as ever. "Why?"
"Why?!" she repeated, her voice rising. "Because you've been sneaking around! Climbing through windows! I know you've been with her!"
He raised an eyebrow. "Her?"
"Don't play dumb, Kiyotaka-kun!" Kei snapped, her hands balling into fists. "Sakayanagi. I know it's her. Why else would you leave me hanging while you sneak off to—what? Whisper sweet nothings to the ice queen?"
Kiyotaka's patience was wearing thin. "You're overreacting."
"Oh, am I?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Do you even realize what this looks like? You're spending all your time with her, texting her, and now sneaking out to meet her at night?"
Kei's Fury Peaks
Kei paced the room, her anger bubbling over. "You know what? Fine. If you want to hang out with her, go ahead. But don't think for a second I'm going to sit back and let her take everything from me!"
Kiyotaka's eyes narrowed slightly. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Kei said, her voice cold, "that if she thinks she can waltz in and take you—or whatever it is she's trying to do—I'll stop her. I don't care what it takes."
Her voice dropped, laced with venom. "I'll knock that stupid cane out of her hand and watch her fall flat on her face."
Kiyotaka's Line in the Sand
The air in the room shifted. For the first time, Kei noticed something change in Kiyotaka's demeanor. His expression remained calm, but there was an edge to his voice that made her stop in her tracks.
"If you do that," he said quietly, "what the bullies did to you will seem like nothing compared to what I'll do."
Kei froze, her breath catching in her throat.
Kiyotaka's voice was steady but cold, his words cutting through the tension like a blade. "I promised to protect you, Kei. Always. But if you hurt Sakayanagi, all bets are off."
She stared at him, her anger giving way to shock. "You'd… you'd take her side over mine?"
He didn't answer immediately, his gaze steady. "This isn't about sides. It's about knowing where the line is. Don't cross it."
Kei's lips trembled, but she forced herself to glare at him. "You're unbelievable," she said, her voice shaking. "You can go to hell, Kiyotaka-kun."
She stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Kiyotaka's Reflection
As the door clicked shut, Kiyotaka let out a slow breath, running a hand through his hair.
Kei's reaction was expected, he thought. But that doesn't make it easier.
And yet, even as the conflict with Kei lingered in his mind, his thoughts drifted back to Arisu. The tension at the pond, the way her composure had slipped ever so slightly.
He allowed himself a faint smile, the memory of her faintly amused but confused expression flashing in his mind.
She's… fascinating.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei storming out, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka drawing a line, and Sakayanagi Arisu keeping him awake at night. But when lines blur and emotions run high, who ends up falling? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Thirteen: Pawns and Queens
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Packing bags, exchanged glances, and an unexpected showdown. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei marching toward the queen, Kushida Kikyo playing the long game, and Ayanokōji Kiyotaka caught in the middle. But when pawns step up to challenge royalty, who walks away unscathed? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Morning at the Resort
The morning sun spilled through the resort's large windows as students bustled about, packing their bags and chatting about the trip. Kiyotaka sat quietly in the corner of the common room, his expression unreadable as he watched his classmates.
Kei, meanwhile, was across the room, her demeanor noticeably colder. She avoided looking in Kiyotaka's direction, her movements sharp as she shoved her belongings into her bag.
This didn't go unnoticed by Horikita Suzune.
Approaching him, her arms crossed, she stared down at him with her usual no-nonsense glare. "What did you do to her?"
Kiyotaka looked up, his face blank. "I didn't do anything."
Horikita raised an eyebrow. "You're usually better at lying than that. Karuizawa-san looks like she's ready to declare war on you."
"She's just having a bad morning," he said with a shrug, turning back to his book.
Horikita wasn't buying it. "She's the linchpin of your little social structure, remember? If she's off-balance, the rest of the class feels it. I don't care what's going on between you two, but don't let it ruin morale. Class D can't afford it."
Kiyotaka remained silent, her words lingering in the air.
Kiyotaka's Suspicion
As Horikita walked away, Kiyotaka leaned back in his chair, his mind turning over the situation.
Kei wasn't always this perceptive. Before, she wouldn't have connected the dots or pursued her suspicions this way. Someone's pushing her.
His gaze swept across the room, scanning the faces of his classmates. His eyes landed on Kushida.
She stood a few feet away, chatting animatedly with a group of students, her innocent smile lighting up her face. But as if sensing his gaze, she turned, her eyes meeting his.
For a brief second, her smile shifted—just enough to reveal the sinister edge lurking beneath. It was as if her expression was saying, How do you like my pawn, Ayanokōji-kun?
Kiyotaka's gaze narrowed slightly. If Kushida doesn't back down, I'll have to strike her quickly. But who's behind her? She wouldn't take this initiative on her own.
Kei's Confrontation
By the time the students returned to campus later that afternoon, the tension was palpable. The long bus ride had done little to soothe Kei's nerves, and by the time she reached the dorms, she was ready to take action.
She changed into a fresh outfit and headed out into the evening air, her mind set on one goal: confront Sakayanagi Arisu.
It didn't take long to find her. Arisu was strolling through the campus gardens, her cane tapping softly against the cobblestone path. Her usual entourage trailed behind her, their quiet conversation a backdrop to her serene presence.
Kei squared her shoulders, her heart pounding as she approached.
"Sakayanagi-san," she called out, her voice firm.
Arisu turned, her violet eyes narrowing slightly as she took in Kei's determined expression. She tilted her head, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Karuizawa-san. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Can we talk?" Kei asked, her tone steady despite the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside her.
Arisu's smile didn't waver, but her gaze flicked briefly to her entourage. "Of course. Leave us," she said calmly, her voice carrying an authority that brokered no argument.
Her loyalists exchanged glances but nodded, retreating down the path.
Arisu turned back to Kei, her smile sharpening slightly. "Shall we sit?"
Without waiting for an answer, she gestured toward a nearby bench, her cane tapping rhythmically as she made her way over.
Kei hesitated for a moment before following, her fists clenched at her sides.
As they sat down, the silence stretched between them, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei sitting face-to-face with Sakayanagi Arisu under the evening sky. But when a pawn steps onto the queen's board, does she come to play—or to destroy? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Fourteen: The Queen's Dilemma
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Two girls, one bench, and one boy caught in the middle. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei demanding answers, Sakayanagi Arisu keeping her cool, and a question neither of them expected. But when hearts clash on the board, who walks away with the king? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Sitdown
The evening breeze carried the faint scent of flowers as Arisu and Kei sat side by side on the stone bench, their postures contrasting sharply. Arisu was composed, her hands lightly resting on her cane, her head tilted slightly as she studied Kei.
Kei, on the other hand, was rigid, her fists clenched on her lap, her gaze sharp but uncertain.
It was Arisu who broke the silence, her voice calm and laced with amusement. "So, Karuizawa-san, to what do I owe this… unexpected meeting?"
Kei hesitated, her carefully rehearsed words momentarily escaping her. "I… I just wanted to talk."
Arisu's lips curved into a faint smile. "Talk? How intriguing. And what, exactly, would you like to discuss?"
Kei leaned forward slightly, her voice firm but betraying a hint of nervousness. "You. Who you are. What you're about. Why everyone treats you like you're some kind of queen."
Arisu blinked, then chuckled softly. "I see. How very… direct of you."
She tapped her cane lightly against the ground, her tone playful. "If you must know, I am simply Sakayanagi Arisu. As for why people treat me the way they do… well, I imagine it has something to do with my charm."
Her words were deliberately vague, and the faint smirk on her lips only seemed to irk Kei further.
Kei pressed on. "Charm, huh? That's all? You're not going to tell me what makes you so special?"
Arisu tilted her head, feigning thoughtfulness. "What makes anyone special, really? Perhaps it's my intelligence. Or my leadership. Or perhaps people simply see in me what they wish to see."
Kei Confronts Arisu
The back-and-forth continued, with Arisu deflecting and Kei pushing harder, until finally, Kei decided to cut through the games.
"Are you in love with Kiyotaka?"
The bluntness of the question caught Arisu off guard, and for the first time that evening, her composure wavered. Her violet eyes widened ever so slightly before she quickly schooled her expression.
"In love?" she repeated, her voice steady but quieter than before.
"Yes," Kei said, her gaze unwavering. "Are you?"
Arisu hesitated, her mind racing. She had never been in love, never cared for such trivial emotions. And yet, the thought of Kiyotaka—his calm demeanor, his sharp mind, the way he saw through her facade—lingered in her mind more often than she cared to admit.
Finally, she replied, "I wouldn't know. I've never been in love, so I can't say."
Kei's Plea
Kei's jaw tightened. "Then what do you want with him? Why are you spending so much time with him?"
Arisu's smile returned, faint but genuine. "I find him… fascinating."
Kei exhaled sharply, her frustration evident. "Well, leave him alone."
Arisu blinked, surprised by the sudden shift in Kei's tone. This wasn't a threat; it was a plea.
The vulnerability in Kei's voice unsettled her in a way she didn't expect. For a moment, she simply stared at Kei, trying to make sense of the emotions swirling in her chest.
And then she turned the tables. "Are you in love with him?"
Kei hesitated, her lips parting slightly as she struggled to find the right words. Finally, she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yes."
Arisu's chest tightened, a feeling she couldn't name blooming uncomfortably within her. Is this jealousy? she wondered, shocked by the realization. Jealous of Karuizawa-san?
Kei's Warning
Kei pressed on, her voice growing firmer. "Kiyotaka isn't someone you can play games with. He's not like that. If you're just toying with him, then leave him alone. He doesn't deserve that."
Arisu's expression softened slightly, her smile fading. "I assure you, Karuizawa-san, I have no intention of playing with Ayanokōji-kun."
Kei studied her for a moment, her gaze searching. "Good."
She stood abruptly, dusting off her skirt. "One more thing," she said, turning back to face Arisu. "If you had to choose—Class A or Kiyotaka—who would you pick?"
The question lingered in the air, heavy with meaning. Arisu didn't hesitate. "Class A."
Kei nodded, her lips pressing into a thin line. "I have my answer."
With that, she turned and walked away, her steps quick and deliberate.
Arisu's Revelation
For a long moment, Arisu sat in silence, her gaze fixed on the path Kei had taken. Her usual composure was nowhere to be found as her mind replayed the final question.
Class A or Kiyotaka?
At the time, the answer had come easily. Her loyalty to Class A had always been paramount. But now, alone in the quiet garden, the question lingered, tugging at her in a way she couldn't ignore.
Who would I choose?
She closed her eyes, exhaling slowly. And then, for the first time, she allowed herself to confront the truth.
I would choose… Ayanokōji.
Her eyes snapped open, her chest tightening as the weight of her revelation settled over her. What does this mean?
She gripped her cane tightly, her knuckles white against the polished wood. Why would I choose him?
And for the first time in her life, Sakayanagi Arisu felt truly unsteady.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei walking away victorious—or so she thinks. But when Sakayanagi Arisu is left with a question she can't answer, the real winner may not be clear just yet. Careful, loves. The game just got personal. XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Fifteen: The Masters Behind the Curtain
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"What's better than delivering a blow? Watching the aftermath, of course. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei playing her ace, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka reflecting on what could have been, and Sakayanagi Arisu dealing with emotions she didn't know she had. But careful, darlings—when the king and queen start questioning the game, who's really in control? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Video Bombshell
Kei sat on her bed, her heart pounding as she stared at the video Kushida had sent her earlier. The short clip, captured from the bushes near the garden, showed her final question to Arisu and the response that had left her both angry and relieved.
"If you had to choose—Class A or Kiyotaka—who would you pick?"
"Class A."
Her fingers hovered over the screen as she debated her next move. Finally, she typed a quick message and attached the video.
[Karuizawa Kei:
"I don't want you to get hurt. Nothing more."
She hit send, exhaling shakily as she stared at the screen.
Kiyotaka's Reaction
Kiyotaka was reading in his room when the notification popped up. He opened the message, his expression unreadable as he watched the video.
The clip ended, and Kei's message followed, hanging in the air like a quiet echo.
"I don't want you to get hurt. Nothing more."
He typed a short reply.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Understood. You did well."
Setting his phone down, he leaned back against the wall, his mind turning over the events of the past day. Logically, everything made sense. Arisu's loyalty to Class A was unwavering, just as he had always assumed it would be.
But a strange, unfamiliar tension simmered in his chest—a restless energy he couldn't quite place. For the first time in years, he felt the urge to… hit something.
Why does this bother me? he thought. It shouldn't. Her priorities are logical, just as mine would be.
And yet, as the hours passed and he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the question nagged at him: Did some part of me want her to choose me instead?
The Text Exchange
Unable to ignore the thought any longer, Kiyotaka picked up his phone and sent a message.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Kei sent me this video."
Arisu's Fury
Arisu was in her room, sipping her evening tea, when the message appeared. She opened it, her calm expression quickly morphing into something she barely recognized: anger.
Her fingers gripped the teacup tightly as she watched the video, her own words playing back to her.
"Class A."
For the first time in her life, Sakayanagi Arisu felt genuine fury—directed not at Ayanokōji, but at Karuizawa Kei.
How dare she meddle? she thought, her grip tightening on the cane resting against her chair.
But the fury was fleeting. Within moments, she exhaled slowly, forcing herself to regain her composure. She wasn't one to lose control, and she wouldn't start now.
Her fingers moved swiftly over her phone.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Well played, Karuizawa-san. She's quite resourceful, isn't she?"
Kiyotaka's Response
Kiyotaka's reply came quickly.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Does her actions surprise you?"
Arisu allowed herself a faint smile, though it didn't reach her eyes.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"No. Her dedication is admirable, in its own way. But I wonder, did my answer surprise you?"
His response came after a brief pause.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"No. It's only logical."
Arisu stared at the screen, her heart settling slightly.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Agreed."
She hesitated, her fingers hovering over the keyboard before she typed her next message.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Have you ever been in love, Ayanokōji-kun?"
Kiyotaka's Surprise
Kiyotaka blinked at the question, momentarily caught off guard. Love? It wasn't a concept he had given much thought to, let alone experienced.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"No. Have you?"
Arisu's response was almost immediate.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"As I told Karuizawa-san, I wouldn't know. I've never been in love."
Kiyotaka nodded slightly to himself as he read her reply.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"It's not in our nature, is it? We're not the lovey-dovey type."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Indeed. We prefer to remain behind the scenes, pulling the strings rather than becoming entangled in them."
The Shared Wondering
For a moment, the conversation paused, the two of them staring at their screens in silence. Then, Kiyotaka sent one final message.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Still, it doesn't mean we can't wonder what it would be like."
Arisu's chest tightened slightly as she read the words, her mind swirling with thoughts she didn't entirely understand.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"No, it doesn't."
And with that, their conversation ended.
The Quiet Realization
As they each lay in their respective beds, the same thought crossed their minds, unspoken and quietly unsettling:
What would it be like?
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Karuizawa Kei playing her hand, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka wrestling with unfamiliar feelings, and Sakayanagi Arisu coming to terms with the unknown. But when two masters of the game start wondering about love, who's really pulling the strings? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Sixteen: Lines of Sacrifice
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Days may pass, but some emotions don't fade—they only grow stronger. Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka playing it cool, Sakayanagi Arisu wondering what might have been, and a new school trial shaking up the board. But when choices are made, and sacrifices are given, who walks away with their heart intact? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Lingering Thoughts
The days following the video incident had been uneventful on the surface. Kiyotaka and Kei had resumed their usual public routine, walking to class together, sharing smiles that felt practiced but effective.
But beneath the facade, Kiyotaka found himself distracted. The unease from his internal questions lingered, a gnawing feeling he couldn't entirely shake. At night, lying in bed, his mind drifted back to Arisu's words, her presence at the pond, and her graceful composure that had faltered—just briefly.
Across campus, Arisu carried herself as she always did: poised, confident, unshakable. But in the quiet moments, as she sipped her tea or rested her head against her pillow, her thoughts betrayed her.
She caught glimpses of Kiyotaka and Kei throughout the day. Though she told herself it didn't matter, the sight of them together stirred something uncomfortable deep within her.
I wish it were me, she thought one evening, surprising herself with the bluntness of the realization.
Her chest tightened, and she shook her head. Ridiculous.
The Trial Begins
The announcement of a new school trial electrified the campus. It was another signature ANHS challenge, designed to pit students from all classes against one another in a high-stakes mental game.
The setup was simple: a tabletop game of "Mafia." Each student in a group would be assigned one of three roles—Cops, Robbers, or Civilians.
Cops must uncover the Robbers.
Robbers must avoid detection while working together to eliminate Cops and Civilians.
Civilians can assist either side but must be wary of betrayal.
The trial would last several rounds, with points awarded based on performance. Alliances would form, and betrayals were inevitable.
To ensure balance, each group was made up of students from all four classes.
The Fateful Grouping
As luck—or fate—would have it, Kiyotaka and Arisu were placed in the same group, along with Honami Ichinose from Class B and Ishizaki from Ryūen's Class C.
The moment Kiyotaka and Arisu made eye contact, a faint spark of tension flickered between them. Neither acknowledged it, but Ichinose noticed, her warm smile faltering briefly as she glanced between them.
The Game Intensifies
The early rounds played out predictably. Ishizaki's blustering attempts to deceive were quickly countered by Arisu's sharp deductions, while Kiyotaka quietly observed, guiding the group subtly without drawing attention to himself.
Ichinose, ever the peacemaker, tried to build alliances, though her trust in everyone left her vulnerable.
By the final round, the stakes were raised: if a Cop sacrificed themselves, their identity would be revealed, and a bonus point would be awarded to their chosen ally.
The group's dynamic shifted sharply when it became clear that Arisu was about to be exposed as a Cop. If she fell, their group's chances of winning the trial would collapse.
Kiyotaka, playing as a Robber, found himself with a choice:
Let Arisu take the fall, preserving his role and potentially securing a Class D victory.
Sacrifice himself, granting her the bonus point and securing a win for Class A.
The Sacrifice
As the group debated furiously, Kiyotaka's calm voice cut through the noise.
"I'll do it," he said, his tone even.
Everyone turned to him in surprise, even Arisu.
"You're… sacrificing yourself?" Ichinose asked, wide-eyed.
Kiyotaka nodded. "It's the most logical move. If I fall, it strengthens the group."
Arisu stared at him, her composure faltering as the words sank in.
Why? she thought, her chest tightening. Why would he choose me?
The round ended, and Kiyotaka's identity was revealed. The group won the trial, with Arisu's performance as a Cop sealing the victory.
The Aftermath
Back in the Class D common room, the mood was light as students congratulated each other on their performances.
"Man, I can't believe you lost, Ayanokōji!" Sudo said, grinning. "That's not like you."
Kiyotaka shrugged. "It wasn't my day."
Horikita glanced at him sharply, sensing something beneath the surface, but said nothing.
Across the room, Arisu stood surrounded by her Class A peers, receiving quiet congratulations. But her focus wasn't on them—it was on Kiyotaka, his calm demeanor masking something she couldn't quite place.
Arisu's Restless Night
That evening, Arisu lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
Kiyotaka's choice replayed in her mind over and over. The question Kei had asked her—"Class A or Kiyotaka?"—now felt like a haunting echo, taunting her.
She sat up abruptly, her heart pounding.
Why did he choose me? Why didn't he let me fall?
For the first time in her life, Sakayanagi Arisu felt truly unsettled. And she knew there was only one person who could answer her questions.
The Decision
Throwing on a coat, Arisu grabbed her cane and left her room, her steps deliberate as she made her way toward the Class D dorms.
Her mind raced with unspoken thoughts, questions she didn't yet know how to articulate.
Why did you choose me, Ayanokōji-kun?
As she approached the building, the moonlight casting a faint glow on the path ahead, she took a steadying breath.
And then she knocked on his door.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu walking through the moonlit campus, headed straight for Ayanokōji Kiyotaka's door. But when the queen finally demands answers, what will the king have to say? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Seventeen: The Non-Obvious Choice
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Sometimes the queen leaves her throne. Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu knocking on Ayanokōji Kiyotaka's door late at night. But when tension reaches its breaking point, who gives in first—the king or the queen? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Visit
The knock on Kiyotaka's door was soft but deliberate. He opened it to find Arisu standing there, her usual composed expression hiding something deeper—an edge of vulnerability, a spark of determination.
"Good evening, Ayanokōji-kun," she said, her voice calm.
"Good evening," he replied, stepping aside. "Come in."
Arisu entered the room, her cane clicking softly against the floor as she glanced around. It was simple and unassuming, much like the boy who occupied it.
"I assume this is about the trial," Kiyotaka said, closing the door behind her.
Arisu nodded, though her thoughts were far more tangled than she let on.
"Would you like tea?" he asked, moving to a small cabinet.
Arisu tilted her head, mildly intrigued. "You drink tea?"
"You like Darjeeling," he said matter-of-factly, taking out a small tin.
Her eyes widened slightly. "You remembered."
He nodded as he prepared the tea. "We had it during our first meeting, when we planned how to deal with Katsuragi and Ryūen. It feels like it was a long time ago."
"Eons," Arisu agreed softly, her gaze flickering to his steady hands as he poured the tea.
The Confrontation
Once the tea was ready, they sat across from each other, the silence between them heavy with unspoken questions.
Arisu was the first to break it. "Why did you do it?"
Kiyotaka sipped his tea, his expression unreadable. "Do what?"
"Sacrifice yourself in the game," she said, her voice firmer. "Why?"
He set his cup down, meeting her gaze. "I felt like it."
The answer made her chest tighten, frustration bubbling beneath her composed exterior. "That's not an answer, Ayanokōji-kun."
"It's the truth," he replied calmly.
Arisu leaned forward slightly, her voice taking on an edge. "You don't do things on a whim. You're deliberate, calculated. So why me? Why not protect your class, your so-called pawn Karuizawa-san? Why choose me?"
Kiyotaka remained silent, his calm demeanor only fueling her frustration.
"Answer me," she said, her voice rising slightly despite herself.
"You already know the answer," he said finally, his tone as steady as ever.
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she felt completely unmoored. Do I?
The thought unsettled her.
The Boiling Point
She stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. "If you won't give me a real answer, then I won't waste any more of your time."
Kiyotaka rose as well, watching her calmly as she made her way to the door.
"Thank you for the tea," she said, her voice sharp with disappointment.
As her hand reached for the doorknob, he moved.
His hand caught hers, pulling her back. Her cane slipped from her grip and clattered to the floor as he steadied her, his other arm wrapping around her waist.
For a moment, they stood frozen, the closeness between them electrifying.
"Sometimes," he said quietly, his voice low but firm, "you need to make the non-obvious choice."
Arisu's breath caught, her heart racing as his words sank in.
"You…" she started, but her voice faltered.
A rare, faint smile tugged at Kiyotaka's lips. "Exactly."
Her frustration melted into something else entirely—something overwhelming, undeniable.
"Dumbass," she muttered, and before she could think better of it, she leaned up and kissed him.
It was fierce, passionate, and unrestrained, a release of everything she'd been holding back.
The Aftermath
When she finally pulled away, her cheeks were flushed, her breath uneven. Kiyotaka's expression remained calm, but his gaze held a flicker of something she couldn't quite place.
Arisu stepped back, bending to pick up her cane. She composed herself, smoothing her skirt and adjusting her hair before turning back to him.
"At the trial," she said softly, "I lied to Karuizawa-san. When she asked me if I'd choose Class A or you."
Kiyotaka tilted his head slightly, intrigued.
"I said Class A," she continued, her voice steady despite the warmth in her chest. "But now, having tasted what it could be…"
She paused, meeting his gaze with a sharp, determined look.
"I won't go back. I'll kill for the other choice."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and left, her cane tapping softly against the floor as she disappeared into the hallway.
Kiyotaka stood there, staring at the closed door, her words echoing in his mind.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Sakayanagi Arisu leaving Ayanokōji Kiyotaka's room with fire in her eyes and resolve in her heart. But when the queen decides to rewrite the rules, will the king follow? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Eighteen: Yours and Mine
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"They say fire is both destructive and beautiful, but when hearts ignite, the flames burn brightest of all. Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu making bold declarations, staking claims, and setting the stage for a bonfire festival no one will forget. But careful, loves—when the king and queen make their move, who gets burned? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Kiyotaka's Late-Night Realization
The night after Arisu left his room, Kiyotaka lay in bed, his thoughts circling back to her fiery words, her kiss, and the way she'd left him stunned yet exhilarated.
Her declaration echoed in his mind: "I lied to Karuizawa. I'll kill for the other choice."
He had thought himself immune to emotion, but now he couldn't deny the way her words made his chest tighten, the way the memory of her kiss lingered like a brand.
She's mine, he thought, the realization settling over him like a weight he didn't want to lift. No one else's.
The thought stirred something deep within him—an unfamiliar sense of protectiveness, even possessiveness. He knew now that he'd go to any lengths for her, just as she had declared for him.
Reaching for his phone, he typed a message:
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"What you said when you left—I'll do the same for you."
He hit send, his expression calm despite the way his pulse quickened.
Arisu's Reaction
Arisu was sitting at her desk, absentmindedly flipping through a book when her phone buzzed. She opened the message, and a smile crept across her lips as she read his words.
She leaned back in her chair, her violet eyes shimmering with amusement and something deeper.
He's truly fascinating, she thought, her chest tightening in a way she was starting to find familiar.
Her fingers moved across the keyboard.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"And I for you."
Setting her phone down, she closed her eyes, allowing herself a rare moment of quiet contentment.
The Next Day: Bonfire Preparations
The school was buzzing with activity as students prepared for the upcoming bonfire festival. Decorations were going up, plans were being made, and chatter filled the hallways.
In Class D, Sudo and Ike were loudly discussing their plans for the festival, while Horikita tried (and failed) to maintain order.
Kiyotaka sat at his desk, quietly observing the chaos. Several classmates tried to engage him, asking if he'd be attending or who he planned to go with, but his responses were brief and impersonal.
"I haven't decided," he said when someone asked.
Horikita gave him a sharp look. "Ayanokōji-kun, your detachment isn't helping morale."
He glanced at her but didn't respond, his mind elsewhere entirely.
The Text Invitation
Later that evening, back in his dorm, Kiyotaka picked up his phone and sent a message.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Will you be at the bonfire festival?"
The reply came quickly.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"I've never gone before. I never saw the fascination with it."
Kiyotaka smiled faintly, typing his response.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"I've thought the same. But this year, I want to go. And I want to see you there."
There was a brief pause before her reply came through.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Are you asking me to accompany you, Ayanokōji-kun? How bold."
Flirty Texting
Kiyotaka leaned back against his pillow, a rare smirk tugging at his lips as he replied.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Bold or logical? I know how much you appreciate efficiency."
Arisu's response was immediate, laced with amusement.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Efficiency, yes. But where's the fun in that? Perhaps you're finally learning the value of spontaneity."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"I could say the same for you. Are you considering attending because of me?"
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Aren't you confident, Ayanokōji-kun? Perhaps I just want to see how the flames reflect off the faces of my classmates."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Perhaps. Or perhaps you want to see how they reflect off mine."
Arisu stared at the screen, a laugh escaping her lips despite herself. He's infuriating, she thought, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Careful, Ayanokōji-kun. Confidence is attractive, but overconfidence? That's another matter entirely."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You find me attractive?"
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Don't push your luck."
The Kei Question
As the flirty back-and-forth slowed, Arisu decided to broach the subject that had been lingering in the back of her mind.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"And what about Karuizawa-san? What's your plan with her?"
Kiyotaka's response was direct.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You're mine. Kei is a friend and will remain a friend."
Arisu raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"A public relationship, yet only a friend? How very... layered. Not everything is as it seems, is it?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Not everything seen in public is reality. You understand that better than anyone."
Arisu smiled softly, her trust in him solidifying further.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"I trust you."
With that, their conversation ended, both of them lying in their respective beds, their thoughts on the future and the flames to come.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu trading sparks before the bonfire festival begins. But when trust is given and promises are made, will the flames reveal the truth—or burn it all down? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Nineteen: Into the Flames
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Bonfires: a symbol of warmth, light… and the kind of drama that can't be extinguished. Spotted: Karuizawa Kei making one last stand, Ayanokōji Kiyotaka plotting his next move, and Sakayanagi Arisu fanning the flames. But when sparks turn to fire, who gets burned? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Preparations in Class D
The Class D common room was buzzing with activity as students prepared for the evening's bonfire festival. Ike and Sudo were arguing over who would get to ask Matsushita to dance, while Horikita tried (and failed) to corral them into helping with the decorations.
"You two are useless," Horikita muttered, her tone sharp as ever.
Kiyotaka sat in his usual corner, observing the chaos with his characteristic calm. But even as he watched his classmates banter and bicker, his thoughts were elsewhere.
Kei approached him, her expression hesitant but determined. "Kiyotaka-kun, are you… going to the bonfire tonight?"
He looked up at her, his face unreadable. "I haven't decided yet."
Kei fidgeted with the hem of her jacket. "Well… if you are, maybe we could go together?"
Kiyotaka studied her for a moment before nodding toward the door. "Let's talk."
The Heart-to-Heart
They walked to a quiet corner of the campus, away from the noise of their classmates. Kei leaned against a railing, crossing her arms defensively.
"What's this about?" she asked.
Kiyotaka's voice was calm but direct. "Kei, I think it's time for us to end our relationship."
Her eyes widened, and for a moment, she couldn't speak. "What? Why?"
"It's better for your social status," he explained. "If you're not tied to me, you'll have more freedom to move within the class hierarchy. You've grown stronger, more confident. You don't need this facade anymore."
Kei shook her head, her voice trembling. "No. That's not true. I don't care about status—I care about you."
Kiyotaka's gaze didn't waver. "And I'll always protect you. But this arrangement isn't necessary anymore."
She clenched her fists, her frustration boiling over. "Did she put you up to this? Sakayanagi? Is this because of her?"
"No," he said simply.
"Then why?" she demanded. "You're letting her play you, Kiyotaka-kun. She's just toying with you, and you're too blind to see it!"
A faint smirk crossed his lips. "As much as she's playing with me, I'm playing with her. It's mutual."
Kei scoffed, turning away from him. "You're impossible."
But even as she glared at the ground, she felt her resistance slipping. She knew he was right, even if she didn't want to admit it.
"Fine," she said finally, her voice tight. "But don't think I'm happy about it."
"I don't expect you to be," he replied, his tone as calm as ever.
She turned to leave but stopped, glancing over her shoulder. "Just… don't let her hurt you, okay?"
He didn't respond, and she walked away.
Arisu's Text
Later that evening, as Kiyotaka was preparing for the bonfire, his phone buzzed with a message.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"I saw Karuizawa-san earlier. Judging by her expression, I assume you had a chat with her?"
Kiyotaka smirked faintly, typing his reply.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"We discussed a change in arrangements. Nothing more."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How delightfully vague. But I suppose that's your specialty."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"You seem curious."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Curiosity is a hallmark of intelligence, Ayanokōji-kun. Surely you can appreciate that."
Flirty War of Wits
As the conversation continued, the teasing grew sharper, their words carrying an undercurrent of tension and amusement.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Are you attending the bonfire tonight?"
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Perhaps. Though I fail to see the appeal of standing around a fire pretending to enjoy mundane conversations."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Yet I find myself wanting to see you there."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How intriguing. And what, pray tell, would you do if I attended?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Observe the flames and see how they reflect off your eyes."
Arisu paused, her fingers hovering over her phone as her lips curved into a sly smile.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Careful, Ayanokōji-kun. Such words might lead me to believe you're enamored."
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"And if I were?"
Her response came quickly, sharper than ever.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Then I'd have to remind you not to play with fire unless you're prepared to burn."
Kiyotaka smirked, leaning back against his chair.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"Speaking of fire, what are you wearing?"
Arisu raised an eyebrow at the audacity of the question but decided to humor him.
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Currently? Lingerie. Black silk, if you must know."
Kiyotaka stared at the screen for a moment, his smirk growing wider.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"I'd call you a liar, but I'll allow it."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"How generous of you. Shall we test the limits of your composure at the bonfire?"
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"That depends. Shall we give the school something to gossip about?"
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Oh, absolutely. It will be… fascinating."
The Agreement
The conversation ended with a final exchange.
[Ayanokōji Kiyotaka:
"See you in a few minutes."
[Sakayanagi Arisu:
"Prepare yourself, Ayanokōji-kun. Things are about to change."
As they both prepared to meet at the bonfire, their thoughts mirrored each other's: This will be fun.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu preparing to light up the bonfire—and the school's social hierarchy. But when two masterminds step into the flames, who's really in control? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
Chapter Twenty: Flames in the Night
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Opening):
"Bonfires aren't just for warmth—they're for igniting sparks. Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu stepping into the light, drawing the eyes of everyone who matters. But when kings and queens take the floor, how will the rest of the school react? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
The Bonfire Festival Begins
The air was alive with the sound of laughter, chatter, and the crackle of the massive bonfire that stood at the center of the festival grounds. Strings of fairy lights crisscrossed above, bathing the crowd in a warm glow, while the soft notes of a live acoustic band added a touch of romance to the night.
Students from all classes mingled, their usual rivalries temporarily set aside in favor of games, snacks, and the promise of something more.
Horikita stood off to the side, observing quietly as always. Her sharp eyes scanned the crowd, noting how her classmates from Class D seemed relaxed, even happy for once.
Kushida flitted between groups, her laughter chiming like a bell as she made herself the center of attention wherever she went.
Ike and Sudo were loudly debating who would be their date for the night, each determined to ask Matsushita but too nervous to approach her.
Ichinose was surrounded by her usual admirers, her bright smile lighting up her corner of the festival.
Ryūen, leaning casually against a tree, watched the crowd with a sly smirk, clearly amused by the spectacle.
Katsuragi, as composed as ever, lingered near the food stalls, his sharp mind quietly calculating opportunities amidst the chaos.
The Entrance
And then, Kiyotaka saw her.
Arisu stepped into the bonfire's glow, her cane tapping lightly against the cobblestone path. She wore a flowing lavender dress, its soft fabric shimmering faintly in the firelight. The color contrasted beautifully with her pale skin, and the subtle slit along one side gave a glimpse of her elegant legs. Her silver hair was styled loosely, cascading over her shoulders, while a single silver bracelet glinted on her wrist.
For a moment, Kiyotaka forgot how to breathe.
She's stunning, he thought, a rare flicker of genuine admiration crossing his usually impassive mind.
And yet, it wasn't just her beauty that captivated him—it was the quiet confidence in the way she carried herself, the way her sharp violet eyes swept over the crowd, unreadable yet commanding.
Arisu's gaze landed on him, and she froze for a moment, her breath catching in her throat.
Kiyotaka wasn't in his usual uniform. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, dark slacks that highlighted his tall, lean frame, and a simple black watch on his wrist. The casual yet polished look suited him perfectly, and the firelight played off his sharp features, making him seem almost… untouchable.
He cleans up well, Arisu thought, surprised by the sudden heat in her chest.
And then another thought struck her, unbidden and unwelcome: I want him.
The Meeting
They approached each other, the world around them fading into background noise.
"Ayanokōji-kun," Arisu greeted, her voice calm but softer than usual. "You look… different tonight."
"So do you," he replied, his tone even but carrying a faint undertone of warmth. "Lavender suits you."
Her lips curved into a small smile. "I wasn't sure if you'd notice."
"I notice more than you think."
The words hung between them, charged with meaning.
Arisu's entourage—Hashimoto and two other Class A students—hovered nearby, their expressions a mix of confusion and disbelief.
"Arisu-sama," Hashimoto interjected, his tone hesitant, "are you sure about—"
"You may leave," Arisu said, cutting him off with a pointed look.
"But—"
"That's an order."
Reluctantly, her entourage retreated, their gazes flickering to Kiyotaka with barely veiled suspicion.
The Gossip Begins
The moment Kiyotaka and Arisu sat down together near the bonfire, the ripple effect began.
Kushida paused mid-conversation, her bright smile faltering as her gaze zeroed in on the pair. What is he up to now? she wondered, masking her confusion with a cheerful laugh.
Kei, standing near the food stalls, clenched her fists, her jaw tightening as she tried to maintain her composure. What is she doing with him?
Sudo and Ike, both mid-bite of their snacks, nearly choked. "Wait… is that Ayanokōji?" Ike stammered. "With Sakayanagi?"
Horikita sighed quietly, her arms crossed. This will end badly for everyone involved.
Ryūen smirked, his eyes gleaming with amusement. Now this is something I didn't see coming.
Katsuragi, observing from a distance, narrowed his eyes. If this connection can be exploited, it could be the final blow to her reign over Class A.
The Conversation
As they sat near the fire, sipping their drinks, Kiyotaka leaned slightly toward Arisu. "It seems we've become the center of attention."
Arisu's gaze flickered to the crowd, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "Let them gossip. It's what they do best."
Kiyotaka's eyes glinted with amusement. "And what do they think we're doing?"
"Plotting, of course," she said smoothly. "Or perhaps something more scandalous."
He raised an eyebrow. "Scandalous? Like you in black lingerie?"
The remark caught her off guard, and for the first time in years, Arisu visibly flustered. Her cheeks flushed faintly as she shot him a sharp look. "Careful, Ayanokōji-kun. If you saw, you'd never be able to unsee it."
He smirked. "And I'd be under your spell forever?"
"Precisely," she replied, regaining her composure. "Are you prepared for that?"
"Perhaps," he said, his tone light but deliberate.
The Dance
As the fire crackled and the music swelled, Kiyotaka surprised her by standing and holding out a hand. "Dance with me."
Arisu blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "I don't dance."
"You can stand on my feet," he said simply, his tone leaving no room for argument.
She hesitated, glancing down at her cane. "My knee—"
"I'll hold you," he said softly, stepping closer. "With me, you can do anything."
Her breath hitched, and for once, she allowed herself to trust him. Taking his hand, she let him guide her to her feet.
He placed her hands on his shoulders and wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly so her feet rested on his.
As they swayed to the music, the world around them seemed to vanish.
The Whispered Promises
"You surprise me, Ayanokōji-kun," Arisu murmured, her voice soft but teasing.
"I could say the same about you," he replied.
She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a whisper. "If no one were watching, what would you do?"
He smirked, his breath warm against her ear. "You don't want to know."
"Try me," she challenged, her heart racing.
For a moment, they were lost in each other, the firelight dancing in their eyes.
Gossip Girl Voiceover (Ending):
"Spotted: Ayanokōji Kiyotaka and Sakayanagi Arisu dancing under the firelight, setting the school ablaze with whispers and speculation. But when kings and queens take the floor, who's really pulling the strings? XOXO, Gossip Girl."
