Chapter 13. Aftermath

The team—Sakura, Itachi, Sasuke, Chihiro, Tenma, Shisui, Naruto, and Hinata—stood in front of the Hokage's desk, where Kakashi sat with his signature calm demeanor. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes held a sharp attentiveness as he regarded the returning shinobi. The air in the room was heavy with unspoken words, the gravity of their recent mission still lingering.

Beside Kakashi stood Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, her arms crossed as her gaze swept over the team. Her expression was one of quiet concern and pride, a subtle reflection of the respect she held for her former students and the warriors they had become. Though she had passed the mantle, moments like this reminded her of the weight of the village's safety and the people who bore it.

At the other end of the room, leaning casually against the window, stood the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. The sunlight streaming through the window framed him in a warm glow, highlighting his thoughtful smile as his eyes lingered on Naruto.

"It's good to see you all back in one piece," Kakashi finally said, his voice light but tinged with relief. "The mission report reached us ahead of your return, but I'd like to hear it from you directly."

Tsunade nodded, stepping forward slightly. "You've done well to come back after facing something so... unique. I imagine it wasn't an easy mission." Her tone softened as her eyes briefly met Sakura's, a silent acknowledgment of her resilience.

Naruto grinned, scratching the back of his head. "Well, it wasn't a walk in the park, that's for sure. But we managed to pull through—barely."

Minato chuckled softly from his spot by the window. "Knowing you, Naruto, I'm sure you found a way to make things more... interesting than they needed to be."

Naruto flushed, half-indignant but unable to suppress his grin. "Hey, come on, Dad! It wasn't just me. Everyone had their hands full. Tenma was complaining…Shisui was Shisui…Sasuke burned down the creepy forest, Itachi was off fighting spirits, and Sakura—"

"Sakura was busy saving us all," Sasuke interjected dryly, though there was a faint hint of humor in his tone.

Kakashi raised a hand to bring the room back to order. "Let's start from the beginning. Give me a full debrief of everything that happened."

The team exchanged glances, and Itachi stepped forward, his voice calm and measured as he began recounting the events of their mission. As the details unfolded, the three Hokages listened intently, their expressions shifting between concern, admiration, and contemplation.

The Uchiha compound was still and quiet as the late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting long shadows over the entrance. Sasuke and Itachi stepped inside, their footsteps echoing as they made their way down the familiar paths that had once been so full of life. Now, the compound seemed almost foreign to them, even though it was home. Itachi's eyes scanned the surroundings briefly before he looked at his younger brother, his expression neutral but tired.

The door to the Uchiha house slid open with a soft creak, and immediately, Mikoto was there. She stood in the doorway, her gaze searching them both. Her soft smile faltered when she saw the weariness in their eyes, especially Itachi's, who appeared distant despite the warmth of her presence. The relief in her voice was apparent as she rushed forward, wrapping her arms around her sons in a tight, almost desperate hug.

"You're home," Mikoto murmured, squeezing them both. "I was so worried. Are you alright?"

Sasuke squeezed her back, his exhaustion and the mission's weight pushing him into the comfort of her embrace. "We're fine, Mother. It's over now."

Itachi stood a little stiff at first but finally gave in, returning the embrace with a faint sigh.

Mikoto pulled back, her eyes scanning them both with concern. "What happened out there? I need to know you're both safe. Please, tell me what happened," she insisted, though her voice wavered slightly.

Itachi's gaze shifted to Sasuke for a brief moment before he answered. "We can't tell you, Mother. It was an S-rank mission and fully classified." His voice was firm but laced with an unspoken apology.

Mikoto's expression softened, her concern now mixed with understanding. She knew how dangerous his missions were, and this one had left its mark on him.

"I see," she replied quietly. "Well, I'm just glad you're home safe. That's all that matters."

Before Mikoto could say anything further, Fugaku appeared in the hallway. His dark, intense gaze settled on his sons, and he didn't waste time with pleasantries. The Uchiha head was a man of few words, but every syllable he uttered carried weight.

"Itachi, Sasuke," Fugaku greeted them with a curt nod. His voice was cool, though there was a certain sharpness to it, as though he had been waiting for this moment. "I trust the mission was successful?"

Itachi met his father's gaze and nodded slightly. "Yes. It was completed."

Sasuke stayed quiet, sensing the tension in the air. Fugaku's presence had always commanded respect, but today, there was something more pressing in his tone. Fugaku's eyes lingered on Itachi for a moment longer before he spoke again, this time with a hint of expectation in his voice.

"Good," he said. "But now that you're back, there are other matters to discuss. This Sunday, the clan meeting. As the heir, you're expected to attend. You will be overseeing the meeting and any important matters that arise. Your presence is necessary, Itachi."

Itachi's body stiffened at his father's words, and Sasuke immediately glanced between the two of them. The air seemed to grow heavier, and he knew what was coming next. Itachi had always been the heir, the one burdened with the clan's expectations. But after everything he'd been through, after everything that had happened during the mission, he wasn't sure if he could carry that weight anymore.

"I'm aware," Itachi replied, his voice controlled but edged with tension. "But I've just returned from a long mission. I would like to rest before I deal with clan business."

Fugaku's expression hardened, his voice lowering, becoming more commanding. "This isn't a request, Itachi. It's your responsibility. You don't get to walk away from it. The clan's future depends on your leadership. You are the heir. There is no time for rest when there is work to be done."

Itachi's fists clenched by his sides, his jaw tightening as frustration bubbled inside him. He had done his part. He had carried the weight of the clan's legacy for years, and he had paid the price.

"I understand my role, Father," Itachi said, his voice low and measured. "But I am not a tool for your ambitions. I am not a puppet to be manipulated for the clan's gain. I have done what was asked of me for years, but I am not prepared to continue this way."

Sasuke flinched at his brother's words, knowing how hard this was for Itachi to say. But Fugaku's face darkened even further, and the room felt like it was closing in on them.

"You don't get to choose when you abandon your responsibilities, Itachi," Fugal shot back, his voice cold. "You're not free to make that decision. As long as you are the heir, you will carry the weight of this clan. It's your duty."

Sasuke stepped forward, his voice quieter but firm. "Father, he's been through a lot. This mission took a lot out of all of us and we almost didn't make it back."

But Fugaku's eyes never left Itachi. "I've done everything for the good of this clan, and you'll respect that, Itachi. You'll be there this Sunday, or there will be consequences."

Itachi met his father's gaze, his heart pounding in his chest. The words he wanted to say were trapped in his throat, but the weight of his father's expectations crushed him down. For a moment, it felt like there was no way out. He had been a soldier, a son, an heir for so long, but he was tired of being everything but himself.

"It's always the same," Itachi muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible. He turned toward the door, his back to his father.

"Where are you going?" Fugaku demanded, his tone hardening.

"I'll be back when I'm ready," Itachi replied without looking back. His voice was steady, but there was a finality to it.

With that, Itachi walked out the door, leaving the tension in the air like a heavy fog. Sasuke stayed behind for a moment, exchanging a quiet look with his father.

"He needs time," Sasuke said quietly, his voice softer now. "But don't push him too hard. He needs time to heal."

Fugaku gave a curt nod, but there was something in his eyes that suggested he wouldn't relent easily. "He will come to understand that the clan comes first, Sasuke. He doesn't have a choice in the matter."

"Well, if it isn't Naruto Uzumaki," Teuchi said with a hearty laugh. "It's been a while! And I see you brought company with you."

Naruto grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head as he glanced over at Hinata, who stood beside him, her cheeks tinted pink. "Yeah! I figured it's about time to show Hinata the best ramen in the world."

Hinata smiled, her gaze soft and warm, though a little nervous. She was still a little shy about being with Naruto like this, but the moment felt perfect.

Teuchi chuckled, noticing the exchange between them. "Well, sit down, sit down. It's on the house today."

Naruto and Hinata made their way to the counter, settling on their usual spots—Naruto on the left, Hinata beside him. Naruto flashed a grin at Hinata, trying to make her feel at ease, but it was clear she was a little overwhelmed. She had never expected something like this, not with the emotions that swirled around them both.

Teuchi went about preparing their ramen with practiced hands, the steam rising from the bowls, and the aroma filling the air. It was the same comforting smell that Naruto had grown up with. The one that reminded him of home, of good memories with friends, and of how much he'd changed since his early days.

"So," Naruto began, his voice quieter than usual, "I know we've been through a lot lately, huh?"

Hinata looked up at him, nodding with a soft smile. Her fingers nervously fiddled with the chopsticks in her hands. "Yes... a lot has happened."

There was a gentle silence as the steaming bowls of ramen were placed before them. Naruto couldn't help but savor the aroma, but his mind was still on what he wanted to say. He took a deep breath, turning to face Hinata, his expression suddenly more serious.

"You know, Hinata," he started, his voice a little shaky, "I've always been a bit of an idiot when it comes to feelings." He smiled sheepishly, but his blue eyes locked onto hers, full of sincerity. "But I think I finally figured something out."

Hinata's heart skipped a beat as she slowly set her chopsticks down. She was trying to hold herself together, but her heart was racing, unsure of what Naruto meant. She looked at him, her violet eyes wide with curiosity. "What do you mean?"

Naruto leaned forward slightly, his hands gripping the edge of the counter. "I'm always so focused on being the Hokage, following in dad's footsteps and making everyone proud of me, that I forgot something important... something right in front of me." He paused, his gaze intense but gentle. "Hinata, I've always admired you. More than just as a friend, more than just as a teammate. You've always believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself."

Hinata's cheeks flushed, and she looked down at her bowl, her fingers tightening around her chopsticks as she tried to process his words. "Naruto…"

Naruto smiled softly, the warmth in his eyes spreading through his voice. "I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I realized that I want you to be by my side. Not just as a teammate, but... as something more." He paused again, his heart pounding. "Hinata, I care about you. I really care about you."

Hinata's breath caught in her throat. Her heart seemed to flutter in her chest, overwhelmed by the sincerity of his words. She had always admired Naruto, always believed in him from the shadows, but to hear him say this... to hear him speak so openly to her, it was more than she could have ever dreamed.

She hesitated for just a moment, then slowly looked up at him, her eyes shining. "I've always admired you too. And I... I've always believed in you. But it's more than that... I've always wanted to be close to you, to be there for you. I just didn't know how to say it."

Her voice trembled with emotion, but it was full of warmth, and as she looked at him, it was like the entire world melted away. All of the doubts, all of the hesitations, they were gone in this quiet, precious moment.

Naruto's heart swelled as her words sank in. "Hinata," he murmured, his voice low and full of emotion. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "I don't know what the future holds, but I want to be with you. I want to see what we can do together, as a team... and more."

Hinata's eyes glistened, and she could barely contain the happiness that bubbled up inside her. Her heart raced, but this time, it was with joy, not fear. "I... I want that too."

A soft, quiet laughter escaped Naruto, and he leaned in slightly, as if to confirm something that had been lingering between them for so long. "Then... let's do it together, alright?"

With her heart bursting, Hinata nodded, her voice a whisper. "Together."

The world outside seemed to fade into the background as they shared this simple, heartfelt moment. The ramen before them was forgotten for a moment, and the two of them sat there, caught up in the warmth of their confession, surrounded by the comforting atmosphere of Ichiraku.
