Appearance
Prior to the awakening of the Zeorymer armored system, and when in his original male body, Masato had dark grey eyes and short-cut, thick black hair parted on his left side. He had a slim to average, modestly athletic build and was of average height for a fifteen-year old, Japanese male. Following his subsequent transition into a girl, Masato acquired rust-colored eyes and shoulder-length, auburn hair with bangs. His female body is petite in stature, slim, and athletic, but with noticeable curves, and stands nearly a head shorter (than his male body).
After performing Cross-dimensional Combination with Miku Himuro [see: Relationships/Friends] to become "Zeorymer of the Heavens", Masato's features have been observed to become a composite mix of the both, with thicker eyelashes, thinner eyebrows, fuller lips, and a more mature cast to his face. Additionally, in comparison to his female body, Masato's hair grows to armpit length, with its color brightening to a more vibrant, crimson red. His frame also increases slightly in size, with his limbs lengthening, his feminine proportions expanding, and his height increasing to a point roughly halfway between that of his female body and that of Miku.
Personality
By most accounts, Masato is a mild-mannered, quiet, and unassuming young man, and while typically reserved, treats those he encounters with polite kindness. Due to this generally accommodating and compliant attitude, he can come across as something of a pushover, as demonstrated by his initially passive and reactive response to the various dangers he encountered after he met Miku; however, when pushed, Masato has displayed a surprising strength of will and resistance towards being forced against his desires. This tenacity appears partially rooted in a strong sense of justice and innately compassionate nature, which compels Masato to intervene when others are in danger or under threat of harm (though he might otherwise be reluctant to do so). His latent heroism likely stems from a noted childhood love for superheroes, who he reportedly sought to emulate when he was young, but later "grew out of" as his interests changed. Despite this underlying valor, Masato generally seems to hate fighting, and would rather avoid conflict if at all possible, either by resolving it through discussion, or simply running away.
While Masato is typically calm and amenable, he has been observed to exhibit a degree of stubbornness, emotional fluster, or timidity when pushed outside of his comfort zone. He likewise is not without a temper, and reportedly hates being misled or deceived, going against or losing his sense of self-identity, or the idea of sacrificing innocent lives or seeing innocent people get hurt. This slow-boiling anger has led him to act more impulsively on occasion, resulting in his blindingly jumping into danger, and leaving him vulnerable to being caught off-guard. Additionally, when transformed into Zeorymer, Masato has at times displayed a more ruthless, bloodthirsty, and ferocious persona. This personality shift seems related to a voice he has allegedly heard while in the heat of battle—a voice that has reportedly provoked and prodded Masato to act with more aggression and cruelty than he would otherwise.
Since being changed (seemingly permanently) into a girl and being taken into custody by Last Guardian, Masato has become notably more insecure, withdrawn, sensitive, and emotionally fragile. These changes in his disposition have led him to rely more heavily on Miku (and others) for personal support, though over time he has gradually begun taking steps to reestablish some level of self-sufficiency within his new life paradigm. Specific actions he has taken include: becoming more comfortable with bathing and dressing in ways appropriate for his new body, exploring Last Guardian facilities, acclimating to his new physicality through swimming, and acting in a more defiant manner to his caretakers. Despite this gradual acclimation to his new biological reality, Masato still identifies himself as male, and is reportedly committed to finding a way to return to his original male body by whatever means necessary.
Abilities
Baseline/Non-transformed
According to both reports and direct observation, Masato is a normal, fifteen-year-old Japanese teenager. Nothing about him comes across as particularly remarkable, and prior to the awakening of the Zeorymer armored system, he probably would have led a perfectly average, ordinary, and peaceful life. Academically, Masato was reportedly in the upper 10th percentile of his first-year high school class, with his strongest subject being Science (particularly Advanced Physics) and his weakest Language Arts. This intelligence has been demonstrated on several occasions by his creative thinking and deductive reasoning skills while under pressure, such as during his escape from Hau Dragon forces with Miku following their first meeting, or other actions taken while transformed into Zeorymer.
Aside from his cognitive skills, Masato is otherwise reportedly average in most other respects. As both a male and female, he has shown a modest degree of athletic ability due to swimming as a recreational activity, which he has reportedly been practicing on a semi-regular basis since he was a young child. Additionally, due to his (adoptive) father's work schedule, Masato has also apparently learned to handle most domestic tasks (e.g. cooking, cleaning, laundry) on his own, granting him a degree of independent function that peers in more traditional, two-parent households might not have.
After having his biological sex changed following his first foray as Zeorymer, Masato initially struggled with even basic tasks such as standing and walking, due to the changes in his height, center-of-gravity, and other anatomical differences related to his newly feminine physique. Masato displayed similar issues when he first transformed into Zeorymer, such as being unable to independently operate the armor's flight or weapons systems without significant, conscious effort (though some actions he seemed to be able to perform on instinct when under pressure). Since then, he has become demonstrably more adept with maneuvering in his new body, in part due to his use of swimming as a type of physical therapy and kinesthetic calibration aid to align his consciousness with his bodily motions. These efforts have also revealed specific differences between his male and female bodies' physical characteristics, including: reduced strength (particularly in the upper body), increased flexibility, marginally greater speed and acceleration (due to his lower weight), and lower overall stamina.
Transformed State
As the genetically assigned bearer of the Heavenly Bracers, Masato is able to transform into "Zeorymer of the Heavens" via Cross-dimensional Combination with Miku Himuro. While his body is normally that of a modestly athletic teenager, once transformed he gains a physically enhanced "Perfect Body" with greatly increased speed, strength, energy, and agility. This biologically female Perfect Body is what enables Masato to equip the Dimensional Coupler, which serves as the power source for his armor and other related abilities. While Masato serves as the primary consciousness (i.e. "pilot") of their combined body, Miku (in non-corporeal form) serves as his backup by manipulating the distribution and output of power from the Dimensional Coupler, as well as regulating the function of various supplemental systems.
When transformed into Zeorymer, Masato can channel Ultra-Dimensional Systems (UDS) Energy from an infinite number of higher dimensions to power various attacks and skills. According to Miku, the range of abilities Zeorymer could exhibit are potentially infinite, and only limited by Masato's imagination and the physical strength/stamina of their combined Perfect Body. For instance, during his first fight as Zeorymer, Masato was able to convert UDS energy into psychokinetic bursts of physical force focused through the orbs of his gauntlets, which could either severely damage or (when sustained for a longer period) completely obliterate a single opponent (aka "Dimensional Cannon"). Another power he demonstrated was a spherical barrier shield resistant to the combined attack of two aerial drones and a heavily armed attack helicopter (aka "Barrier Shield"). Lastly, by slamming his gauntlets together, Masato unleashed an all-encompassing wave of destructive energy preceded by a voice declaring: "Meiou" (aka "Hades Attack"). Even when directed upwards and not at full output, the kinetic force of this attack was enough to cause significant physical and infrastructural damage to the small village in which he was fighting.
Furthermore, as Zeorymer, Masato's specialized armor system grants him limited flight capability with the aid of built-in thrusters, which he can also use to boost his agility and physical movements. The armor itself is tough enough to resist the impact of small-arms fire, and even when damaged it can be almost instantly repaired by siphoning matter and energy from higher dimensions using the Dimensional Coupler. Masato can also use this energy/matter transference to heal any injury, as well as to transfer matter away from his own body to heal the injuries of others (causing himself to temporarily take on those same injuries in the process). The Zeorymer armor is also equipped with a sophisticated, three-dimensional sensory array, which serves to greatly enhance all of Masato's primary senses.
Relationships
Family
Shigeharu Akitsu: For his entire life, Masato reportedly believed that Shigeharu Akitsu was his biological father, only learning that this was not the case after being taken in by Last Guardian. By all accounts, Masato's relationship with Professor Akitsu was a warm and loving one, with a fishing trip they went on together when Masato was in preschool being one of his fondest memories. Unbeknownst to Masato, Professor Akitsu was his adoptive father, having taken the young boy in to protect both him and the Heavenly Helm (after fleeing his former employer, Nemaoda), with the hopes of breaking the genetic programming which bound the two together. Professor Akitsu recently died after a period of prolonged illness; however, before his death he had laid down plans for Masato to take possession of the Heavenly Bracers, and then be taken into the custody of his mentor, Professor Ryozo Himuro.
Michiru [CONFIDENTIAL]: Masato's biological mother, who reportedly died when Masato was very young, though he reportedly remembers her as being a generally kind and gentle woman. According to Masato, Michiru was the one who first taught the boy how to swim. After being taken in by Last Guardian, Masato learned that his mother was the former wife of Professor Himuro, and that he himself was the result of an extra-marital relationship [see: "Misaki Kihara"]. He also learned that his mother died while trying to escape from Nematoda, the predecessor organization to Hau Dragon, after her and her colleagues' escape plans were outed to their superiors.
Masaki Kihara: Masato's actual biological father, who Masato reportedly first learned of after being taken into the custody of Last Guardian. At one time, Kihara was Professor Himuro's business partner and scientific collaborator within their thinktank known as "The Council" , as well as a resident expert on Ultra-Dimensional Systems Theory. Kihara apparently died after betraying his colleagues to their overseers in Nematoda. According to Professor Himuro, before his death, Kihara seduced and violated his wife, Michiru, and that it was from this union that Masato was born.
[CONFIDENTIAL] [CONFIDENTIAL]: This record is only accessible with a Class S security clearance.
Friends
Miku Himuro: A "mysterious girl" who Masato met as a transfer student to his class on the day of his father's death, and who later came to his rescue when he was attacked by the mechanized agents of Hau Dragon at his childhood home. While initially Masato seemed wary and unsure of Miku's intentions (as well as likely having several questions about her above average and seemingly abnormal physical capabilities), he reportedly quickly developed a strong level of trust in Miku due to the latter's repeated demonstrations of support and protectiveness during their escape from Hau Dragon. After combining into Zeorymer, Masato seemingly developed even more appreciation for Miku as his "partner" and background source of encouragement during their shared experience(s). Following Masato's transition into his (seemingly permanent) female body, the transformed boy has only grown closer to Miku (after an initial rejection of her) as his one constant and main source of comfort for his heightened insecurity. While it appears that Masato was physically attracted to Miku from the start (as a typically hormonal teenage boy), his affection and appreciation has seemingly only deepened as the two have grown closer during their time together. Presently, Masato has reportedly become more aware of how reliant he has become on Miku, and as such has apparently developed a resolve to grow stronger so that he can provide as much support and protection for her as she has for him.
Sachiko/Pugi: A young girl and her pet pug who Masato met during his first night as Zeorymer. He was reportedly drawn to Sachiko's cries for help due to his inherently compassionate nature, and later acted the part of a "Magical Warrior of Love and Justice" to comfort the child before reuniting Sachiko with her father. In return for his actions, Sachiko bestowed Masato with the honorary title of: "Zeo-neesan."
Unknown Female Childhood Friend: Briefly mentioned by Masato while in the process of returning Sachiko to her father. According to Masato, this friend was a "huge fan" of magical girl TV shows, which a young Masato would watch along with her because it reportedly made his friend "happy." Masato was interrupted before he could say his friend's full name, only managing to utter a brief: "Yu—"
Allies
Prof. Ryozo Himuro: Miku's (adoptive) father and the Supreme Commander of Last Guardian, as well as the former husband of Masato's biological mother [see: Relationships/Family]. Largely because of the latter issue (and Masato's resulting familial associations), Professor Himuro has apparently had a strongly adversarial and antagonistic relationship with Masato from the day of their first meeting. In addition to frequently treating Masato with contempt and disdain (including labeling him "Little Herbivore Boy" as a pejorative), Professor Himuro has reportedly refused to extend him any aid or assistance with trying to restore his male body. In spite of his gruff exterior, Professor Himuro has at times demonstrated a degree of respect when Masato has said or done something he deems innovative or impressive, though the scientist has been just as quick to offer criticism or condemnation as an act of seeming passive aggression. While at first cowed by Professor Himuro's constant berating, Masato has slowly started to push back in his own way, and ignore the elder's antics as opposed to being bothered by them.
Isao Oki: Deputy Commander of Last Guardian. While allegedly at first intimidated by the taciturn man, Masato has reportedly quickly come to appreciate Oki's authoritative but supporting attitude during their few interactions (particularly in comparison to Professor Himuro's demonstrably more abrasive and patronizing manner). This "tough love" approach was seen when Oki talked down Masato's expressed guilt for the death of Oki's older brother, instead encouraging the teen to use the loss as a motivator for the fight against Hau Dragon. Though Masato cannot recall it, he and Oki apparently met before the awakening of Zeorymer, though the specifics of this meeting have not yet been shared.
Insp. Valkyria Forsberg: United Nations (UN) Liaison to Last Guardian. Due to Valkyria's reportedly significant physical allure, seeming shamelessness, and frequent invasions of his personal space, Masato seemed initially to be completely terrified by the Swede. While seemingly still taken aback by Valkyria's overwhelming force of presence, Masato has apparently become more comfortable around her due to the woman's overt friendliness (to the point of granting Masato an affectionate nickname), geniality, and surprising amount of compassion after the revelation of his true parentage.
Capt. Sean Barker: A Canadian/American soldier who Masato met by happenstance while wandering around the Last Guardian base. Despite the age difference between the two of them, Masato and Sean quickly seemed to establish a strong rapport after the latter took it upon himself to serve as Masato's escort and pseudo-tour guide around the base. They bonded over the shared secret of Sean's "side-gig" (i.e. screenwriting) outside his primary work as a US Army Captain on loan assignment with Last Guardian, as well as Sean's admission to not having so great a relationship with his wife's younger cousin (which he hoped to make up for with Masato). Their relationship was reportedly further strengthened when Sean defended Masato during a confrontation with other Last Guardian soldiers demanding reparations for the loss of their comrades during the Hau Dragon attack on Masato's (former) home.
Enemies
Hau Dragon Bioroids: The first representatives of Hau Dragon which Masato encountered, initially in the form of multiple black-suited, sunglasses-wearing "agents" at his family home in Fuji City. These foot soldiers were eventually revealed to be biomechanical, cybernetic organisms, with seemingly organic tissue covering electro-mechanical structures and workings underneath. As artificial beings, these androids have enhanced physical strength, significant damage resistance and tenacity, and exhibit a cold, calculated efficiency towards the completion of their programmed mission objectives. While they could be downed temporarily by gunfire, it ultimately took the super-powered strength and extra-dimensional psychokinetic blasts Masato could launch after transforming into Zeorymer to finally put down these combatants in one-on-one combat.
Hau Dragon Aerial Drones: Automated attack craft which pursued Miku and Masato out of Fuji City. Equipped with multiple missiles and fully automatic machine guns, these highly maneuverable airborne threats proved to be a challenging opponent to escape, either on land or by air. They were eventually destroyed by the "Meioh Attack" Masato unleashed while transformed into Zeorymer.
